State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday, through Sunday night. Drivers can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, Troopers will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while driving, they should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles when traveling. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period, Troopers issued 10,497 total tickets, arrested 210 people for DWI, 258 tickets for distracted driving, 301 tickets for Move Over law violations.
Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced that the State of Emergency for bot the towns of Pittsfield & Laurens have been rescinded today. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in those towns as recovery efforts are continuing.
49 year old Thomas George of Binghamton, was found guilty following a jury trial in Broome County Court for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On July 1, 2025, Police conducted a traffic stop in Johnson City, officers located drug paraphernalia and a quantity of methamphetamine, they also discovered that George had a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband, with 10 rounds of ammunition. George is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14th, he faces up to 15 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.
The Chenango County Historical Society and the Chenango County Historian’s Office are hosting the “America’s Potluck & Turtle Island Festival” from 4–8 pm. on July 5 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Historical Society Executive Director Jessica Moquin told WCDO what people can expect to see:

This year's tournament will be raising money for the 2027 edition of the scholarship, where the goal is to surpass last year's fundraising efforts, about 60 teams will be participating.

State Police at Binghamton responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton Thursday. The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

Sholtes said that 23 of the 1976 4th Graders will be there Saturday, after the parade from the Unatego Elementary School to the Community House, The Time Capsule will be opened at 12:00 Noon. A new Tricentennial time capsule for 2076 is being organized by the Rotary Club of Unadilla. Anyone is invited to contribute an item to be opened on July 4, 2076.

Sidney Police Department responded to a 3 vehicle head on collision Thursday Morning at about 10:20 AM on State Route 8 & River Street. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. The Sidney Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Sidney Fire Department, Sidney EMS, State Police & DOT, among others, The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.
51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was sentenced today in Broome County Court following his conviction for Grand Larceny after a Jury Trial. Hoose was sentenced to a term of 2 to 6 years in New York State Prison, also the Court entered a Civil Judgment in favor of the victim. Hoose operated a business known as H&H Contracting, he entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally converted over $3,000 of those funds for other purposes unrelated to the project. Hoose further failed to provide the victim with an accounting and disposition of the trust funds despite a written request, as required by Law.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.
Republican Candidate Terry Bernardo will hold a Meet & Greet with local voters, on Sunday from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, at the Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney. Bernardo is running for the 51 State Senate District, seeking to replace Peter Oberacker, who has decided to run for Congress in the next election.

Live demonstrations will be conducted by the K-9 Teams, Drone Pilots, Project Lifesaver Team, and our Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist, plus Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from Delaware County Public Health will conduct a Car Seat Safety event.

40 year old Mark Archer of Sidney pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court Thursday. Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 18-year-old Kayden Wilcox of East Meredith, in June, Deputies received a complaint that a male subject was in possession of child pornography, Investigators responded to a residence in the Town of Kortright to seize electronic evidence. Wilcox was in possession of obscene sexual material of a child, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilcox on 1 count of Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, he was released on an appearance ticket and directed to return to the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
Mohawk Valley Gives, an annual one-day on-line fundraiser, returns today, it is hosted locally by the Community Foundation of Otsego County, where more than 80 participating Otsego County nonprofits will have the opportunity to raise funds with a secure online platform. 21 year old Matthew Bartosik of Conklin, pleaded guilty in a fourteen-count indictment in Broome County Court, to Murder, Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Criminal Use of a Firearm Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 1st degree Assault, on January 3, 2025, State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 Leslie Avenue in Conklin for a domestic complaint, where a family argument escalated, during which Bartosik shot his uncle, Michael Lewis, multiple times, causing his death & his cousin Jessica Lewis multiple times in the head and back, she underwent surgery and survived. As Law Enforcement approached to reach the barricaded victims and apprehend Bartosik, he fired at the officers. Bartosik will be sentenced on November 14, in Broome County Court and faces a sentence of up to 50 years to life in State Prison.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer met with Oneonta Job Corps students and staff Thursday, Schumer explained that the Trump administration is targeting Job Corps centers for closure & completely eliminate funding for the program. Schumer said the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed a bipartisan bill out of committee that protects funding for Job Corps for next year, and now is calling on the House to follow suit. State Police arrested 62 year old Kenneth Friedlander of Oneonta for Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief, Menacing and Resisting Arrest, after Troopers were dispatched to Oneida Village Mobile Home Park in the town of Oneonta. Friedlander is accused of attempting to set a trailer on fire with a paper bag that he set on fire, and threatening to kill people, he barricaded himself in a bedroom, when the Troopers made contact with him, he charged at the Troopers with a pair of scissors, he continued to resist arrest, even after a taser was deployed but was ultimately placed in handcuffs. Friedlander was processed and was transported to the Otsego County Jail for Central Arraignment.
On Tuesday the Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group executed a search warrant on Hickory Street in the Town of Triangle, they seized Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, narcotic Pills, over $40,000 in cash, plus Scales and Packaging Materials. 22 year old Kalysa Drury of Binghamton and 62 year old Randy Glezen of the Town of Triangle were each charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, both were arraigned remain in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility. The total street value of narcotics is estimated at about $7,000.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of phase 2 of the STAR program benefit season. Eligible homeowners in communities with school tax due dates in August or September will start receiving their STAR benefit in the coming weeks, most homeowners will receive a check between $350 and $600. The autopsy of Melina Frattolin was performed Monday, the preliminary results are that the 9 year old died from Asphyxia due to drowning & Homicide. State Police are asking for the public's help in gathering additional video evidence or eyewitness accounts of the Toyota Prius driven by 45 year old Luciano Frattolin as they traveled from July 11, until July 19, on the I-87 Northway between Exits 28 through exit 20 during the evening hours of July 19, the evidence can be sent by email to crimetip@troopers.ny.gov. Luciano Frattolin was arrested and charged with Murder and Concealment of a Human Corpse, he is being held in the Essex County Jail.
NYSEG announced that a combination of hotter-than-average temperatures and rising electricity supply prices could result in a higher bill this summer. In addition to increased usage due to warmer weather, the cost to produce energy is also expected to rise, customers may see an estimated 6.5% increase in their bills between June and September compared to the same period last year. During the intake process, corrections officers located 3 individually wrapped foreign objects in Wilson's clothing, the substances tested positive for fentanyl, Wilson was processed and returned to the correctional facility for Arraignment.

35 year old Duane Kinne of Walton appeared in Delaware County Court Wednesday and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison followed by 20 years of post-release supervision. On December 21, 2024, Walton Police arrested Kinne and charged him with several counts of Unlawful Surveillance, and Criminal Sex Act, he appeared in Delaware County Court in March and waived his right to have the case presented to a Delaware County Grand Jury, he pleaded guilty to 6 counts of Unlawful Surveillance & 1 count of Criminal Sex Act, he was sentenced to six - 1 year sentences for each conviction of unlawful surveillance and to 12 years of imprisonment and 20 years of post-release supervision for his conviction of Criminal Sex Act, he was also ordered to register as a sex offender upon his release from state prison.
35 year old Irina Irimescu of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Wednesday to be re-sentenced after it was determined she violated her probation. On August 14, 2023, she pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny, she admitted guilt for her part in a larceny with Darin Wignall. She was sentenced to a term of 5 years of felony probation supervision. The County Department of Probation filed a revocation petition alleging Irimescu violated the terms by failing a required drug screening. Judge Rosa re-sentenced Irimescu to 364 days of incarceration.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Wesley Wyckoff of Susquehanna Pennsylvania for 2 counts of Burglary, plus Criminal Mischief, Possession of burglar Tools and Criminal possession of a controlled Substance. Early Tuesday morning, deputies responded to report of a burglary on Colesville Road in the Town of Kirkwood. Upon arrival, they found a man, later identified as the property owner, standing near a pickup truck and pointing a handgun at another man, who was dressed in dark clothing and wearing what appeared to be a mask. Both the property owner and the other man complied with verbal commands from law enforcement, they determined that the property owner discovered a masked man, confronted him & pointed his legally registered handgun at him and called 911. Multiple buildings and a vehicle were damaged and broken into, Wyckoff possessed a screwdriver, pliers and methamphetamine. Wyckoff faces court action shortly.

30 year old Joseph Osei of Canada was convicted in US District Court for 4 counts of mail fraud, 1 count of access device fraud, and 2 counts of aggravated identity theft for fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 pandemic-related unemployment insurance benefits from New York State using stolen identities. Jurors deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning a guilty verdict on all counts, from August through November 2020, Osei fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits from the State Department of Labor worth more than $100,000, he also defrauded agencies in California, Rhode Island, and Arizona using stolen identities. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23rd, the mail fraud convictions carry a maximum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. The access device fraud conviction carries a maximum term of imprisonment of up to 15 years.

The State Department of Transportation announced that Phase I Detours will begin for the Roundabout Project in the City of Oneonta, on Monday, June 2nd and will be continuing for approximately 3 months, weather permitting. Access to the intersection will only be available from Lettis Highway northbound to Main Street eastbound and from Main Street eastbound to Lettis Highway southbound. Motorists are urged to follow separate signed detours for cars and trucks. Passenger vehicles traveling on Main Street will be detoured onto Otsego Street, Fair Street and Grand Street around the construction. Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that of 51-year-old Eric Dellafiora of North Blenheim, has been arrested on an Arrest Warrant issued out of Schoharie County for failing to appear on charges of Traffic Offenses, Fleeing an Officer, Weapons Offenses, and Obstruction Charges. On Sunday, a Deputy noticed a suspicious vehicle and person at a business that was closed within the Town of Harpersfield, Dellafiora was discovered to have an Arrest Warrant stemming from Schoharie County & was turned over to Schoharie County Sheriff’s Deputies to be processed on the Arrest Warrant.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Wesley Wyckoff of Susquehanna Pennsylvania for 2 counts of Burglary, plus Criminal Mischief, Possession of burglar Tools and Criminal possession of a controlled Substance. Early Tuesday morning, deputies responded to report of a burglary on Colesville Road in the Town of Kirkwood. Upon arrival, they found a man, later identified as the property owner, standing near a pickup truck and pointing a handgun at another man, who was dressed in dark clothing and wearing what appeared to be a mask. Both the property owner and the other man complied with verbal commands from law enforcement, they determined that the property owner discovered a masked man, confronted him & pointed his legally registered handgun at him and called 911. Multiple buildings and a vehicle were damaged and broken into, Wyckoff possessed a screwdriver, pliers and methamphetamine. Wyckoff faces court action shortly.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Nelson Lopez who is wanted on a Delaware County Family Court Warrant. Anyone with information should contact the Sheriff’s Office at (607) 832-5555 or “Submit a Tip” through the Sheriff’s APP.
30 year old Joseph Osei of Canada was convicted in US District Court for 4 counts of mail fraud, 1 count of access device fraud, and 2 counts of aggravated identity theft for fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 pandemic-related unemployment insurance benefits from New York State using stolen identities. Jurors deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning a guilty verdict on all counts, from August through November 2020, Osei fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits from the State Department of Labor worth more than $100,000, he also defrauded agencies in California, Rhode Island, and Arizona using stolen identities. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23rd, the mail fraud convictions carry a maximum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. The access device fraud conviction carries a maximum term of imprisonment of up to 15 years.

The State Department of Transportation announced that Phase I Detours will begin for the Roundabout Project in the City of Oneonta, on Monday, June 2nd and will be continuing for approximately 3 months, weather permitting. Access to the intersection will only be available from Lettis Highway northbound to Main Street eastbound and from Main Street eastbound to Lettis Highway southbound. Motorists are urged to follow separate signed detours for cars and trucks. Passenger vehicles traveling on Main Street will be detoured onto Otsego Street, Fair Street and Grand Street around the construction. The coordinated effort was executed over the course of five days by all 55 FBI field offices. Locally, Jerry Butler of Walton was charged, he is accused of using a social messaging application to request and receive sexually explicit content from a minor, he is believed to be involved in the "764" network, whose members seek to corrupt and exploit vulnerable populations, including minors, He faces at least 15 years in prison. The Department urges the public to report suspected exploitation of a child through their tip-line at 1-800-CALL-FBI, at tips.fbi.gov, or by calling your local FBI field office.

The Otsego County Health Department announced that a Gray Fox has tested positive for rabies. The State DEC collected the fox from the Town of Otsego on September 9th, it was held until tested this week, there were no animal or human exposures. Otsego County Health officials remind residents to get their pets & farm animals vaccinated for rabies, more information is available at 607-547-4230.
The City of Oneonta has opened the municipal lots for parking in anticipation of tonight's/tomorrow's winter weather event. Please remember that anytime there is more than 2 1/2" of snow, vehicles must be removed from City streets. Parking is available in the following lots: 27 Market St Lot, Westcott Lot, Wall Street Lot, Dietz Street Lot and in Damaschke Field.
The Annual Holiday visit by the Toys for Tots Train is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th, at the Walnut Street crossing in Bainbridge. The train is anticipated to arrive at 1:00 pm on the 14th.

49 year old Keith Audette of Hamden pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court Tuesday, Audette admitted that he had been previously convicted of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated in Chenango County in 2015, he also admitted that he drove a motor vehicle in the Village of Walton on April 9th while under the influence of methamphetamine. Audette is expected to be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, and his license will be revoked, he will also be required to pay any fines and surcharges imposed by the Court.
The Great American Smoke-Out is today nationwide, to help people quit smoking tobacco for one day, in the hope that they keep it going beyond today. The Chenango County Health Department encourages individuals who use nicotine/tobacco products to participate in the Great American Smoke-Out. A variety of treatments are available, people can call the New York State Quit-line at 1-866-NY-QUITS, go to nysmokefree.com, or cdc.gov/tobacco
A check for $4,000 was presented by the Rotary Club of Cooperstown to support a partnership between Bassett Healthcare Network’s Cancer Institute and the Cooperstown Food Pantry that delivers free food to cancer patients in need across the region. The matching grant, made up of a $2,000 grant from Central New York Rotary and a $2,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Cooperstown, will help the program continue. The Cooperstown Food Pantry, located at 25 Church Street, & currently serves between 45 to 50 households.

34 year old Rashima Rollocks of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Assault in Broome County Court. On June 19, 2023 Rollocks committed a violent assault on a seventy-five-year-old blind man inside his home in the City of Binghamton. Rollocks is scheduled to appear back in court for sentencing on November 7th, where she is expected to receive 7 years in New York State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Gary Garbera of Cherry Valley following a Grand Larceny investigation. Garbera is accused of stealing a vehicle in the Village of Gilbertsville. Garbera was processed and issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to Town of Butternuts Court.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced that families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children can receive double the benefits to spend at participating farmers’ markets, helping to supplement their food budgets and purchase healthy, local products. 38 year old Tristan Skeete of Brooklyn was sentenced to additional jail time for assaulting a fellow inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility. On February 20th, Corrections Officers of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fight occurring in one of the housing units at the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Upon arrival, officers broke up the fight between Skeete, & 2 other inmates, Corrections Officer Bryce Charles eventually deployed a taser to break up the fight. Skeete appeared in Delaware County Court this week & entered a guilty plea to 3rd degree Assault, he was sentenced to 7 months incarceration, a $25 Crime Victim fee and surcharge, and a $50 DNA fee.
The 8th Annual Savannah Williams Memorial Scholarship Fundraising Golf event will be held this Saturday. The registration starts at 11:00 AM at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich, the day will also feature the Beadle Brothers performing at the Pavilion at 5:30 PM. The Scholarship is named after Williams, who was a Norwich High School Graduate who was killed in a motor vehicle accident in 2016 while attending SUNY Geneseo.
