24 year old Thomas Murray of Binghamton was arraigned in a federal court room on an indictment charging him with Distribution of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography. Murray was arrested following an investigation by the FBI & State Police, he was returned to state custody where he is being held on similar state charges. Murray allegedly distributed child pornography on a web-based messaging facility on 2 separate occasions & he possessed child pornography on 2 devices, which was uncovered following a search warrant conducted on Murray’s residence in 2025. Murray faces a mandatory minimum term of 5 years in federal prison on the distribution charges, a maximum term of 20 years in federal prison for the distribution and possession offenses, a fine of up to $250,000, and a mandatory term of supervised release of between 5 years and life. Murray would also be required to register as a sex offender if convicted.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Bail Jumping and Criminal Contempt, following a violation of a court order issued following his arraignment on a previous Grand Larceny charge. Lazarati was prohibited from leaving the United States and was directed to surrender his passport. Lazarati failed to comply with those conditions, State Police were notified Thursday that Lazarati was attempting to leave the United States and purchased an airline ticket to Qatar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was arrested at the airport, brought back to Troop C, and was processed in and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $35,000 cash, $50,000 credit or $250,000 partially secured bond.

The Luszi’s Legacy Cornhole Tournament last weekend successful, the tournament raised $1,600 that will go directly to Pet Street Station Animal Hospital fund, to assist families deal with the bills for emergency or quality of life care for their senior pets.

The United States Attorney's Office announced that 20 year old Jerry Butler of Walton pleaded guilty in US District Court to receiving child pornography. Butler admitted that in January and February 2025, he used a social media messaging application to receive child sexual abuse material from an out-of-state minor victim. Butler exchanged approximately 20,000 messages with the victim in which Butler persuaded the victim to create and send him sexually explicit depictions of herself, or he would publicly embarrass her if she did not comply with his demands. Butler faces a term of imprisonment of at least 5 years and up to 20 years in prison when sentenced in October, he also faces a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. Butler will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
Former Delaware County Deputy Timothy Tryon pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Petty larceny, for stealing items from the Oneonta Walmart. Tryon was convicted June 18th in Oneonta Town Court, He was fined $500, ordered to pay restitution, and is no longer employed by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 2:03 pm Wednesday, the Otsego County 911 Center received multiple calls reporting a structure fire at Dietz Street Lofts, at 34 Dietz Street in Oneonta, Units arriving on scene found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the building. Mutual aid was requested to the scene, and the fire was quickly extinguished. No serious injuries have been reported. One individual was transported for evaluation for possible smoke inhalation. Some residents have been displaced and the American Red Cross is contacting them to ensure they have access to temporary shelter. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Numerous area Fire Departments also responded.
59 year old Brian Gill of Andes pleaded guilty to a social security fraud, in US District Court in January, Gill admitted that between January 2021 and November 2023, he was collecting social security disability benefits, while he was managing and personally engaging in physical labor for a tree services company he owned and operated. Gill faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000, As part of his plea, Gill agreed to pay restitution to the SSA for the funds he fraudulently collected.

27 year old Delos Thurston of Clinton, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in US District Court to money order fraud. Thurston admitted that between April 2025 and January 2026, while he was employed as the Postmaster of the Morrisville Post Office, he fraudulently issued 179 money orders for his own benefit without paying for them, in the amount of $118,088.19 from the United States. Thurston is scheduled for sentencing on August 6, he faces a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

State Police arrested 62 year old Frank Kovacs of Laurens, on a warrant for 8 counts of Rape, 3 counts of Criminal Sex Act, 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, Investigators received information pertaining to the rape and sexual assault of a child in Saratoga County from 2008 until 2011 in Clifton Park. Kovacs was arrested at his place of employment in Oneonta, and was transported to State Police in Clifton Park for processing. He was then arraigned at the Clifton Park Town Court where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail, a $250,000 bond, or a $500,000 partially secured bond. In June 2025, Kovacs was arrested by State Police for rape and sex abuse charges following a Otsego County grand jury indictment, this arrest is a continuation of that investigation. Kovacs is also mayor of the village of Laurens.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $250 million to help communities afford water and sewer infrastructure improvements. The Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved financing and State and federal grants for a number of local governments to access for crucial upgrades. Locally, Funding was approved for the Village of Bainbridge, they will receive $7.5 million in State grants and low-cost financing for the replacement of approximately 13,000 linear feet of water main and waterlines plus the replacement of Well No. 1 and backup power installation for Wells 1 and 3. State DEC announced more than $1.72 million in grants to 6 land trusts for 9 projects that help conserve local forests. The land trusts will purchase new conservation easements that will protect air and water quality, preserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity, support sustainable forest management, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Locally, the Otsego Land Trust, will get $54,250 to purchase a conservation easement on the 41-acre Burr Forest property in the town of Westford, adjacent to Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park. The easement property is 90 percent forested, and includes wetlands and hemlock stands, along with large concentrations of native plants.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year old Thendara Hartwell of Plymouth for Making a Terroristic Threat and Falsely Reporting an Incident. On August 5th, the County's 911 Center received a call from Community Bank in Norwich stating that they received a bomb threat from an anonymous phone number. The Sheriff’s Office responded & evacuated multiple businesses, a State Police Explosives Detection Canine and bomb technician conducted a search of the entire premises and did not locate any signs of explosive devices & the businesses re-opened. After an investigation and execution of a search warrant, it was found that Hartwell made the threatening phone call from a blocked phone number and caused public alarm and inconvenience. Hartwell was taken into custody today & was arraigned & she was
remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,250 bail.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Justin Quakenbush of Oneonta Monday for Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer and Reckless Endangerment. Deputies arrested Quackenbush following a report of a stolen vehicle, Deputies were able to locate the stolen vehicle in the City of Norwich, they initiated a traffic stop and Quackenbush failed to comply and led Deputies on a pursuit through the City and into the Town of New Berlin. Quackenbush stopped in South New Berlin where he was taken into custody, he was transported back to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for processing and was arraigned & he was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 bail.

The FBI has announced the indictment of 63 year old Henry Garcia of Vero Beach Florida for "Sending a potentially hazardous material" charge, by mailing a letter last year to the New York Attorney General's Office in Albany, containing what was believed to be a biological weapon. The suspicious white powder was not a hazardous substance, the charge filed against Garcia carries a maximum term of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

30 year old Joseph Osei of Canada was convicted in US District Court for 4 counts of mail fraud, 1 count of access device fraud, and 2 counts of aggravated identity theft for fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 pandemic-related unemployment insurance benefits from New York State using stolen identities. Jurors deliberated for less than 2 hours before returning a guilty verdict on all counts, from August through November 2020, Osei fraudulently obtained unemployment insurance benefits from the State Department of Labor worth more than $100,000, he also defrauded agencies in California, Rhode Island, and Arizona using stolen identities. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23rd, the mail fraud convictions carry a maximum term of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. The access device fraud conviction carries a maximum term of imprisonment of up to 15 years.

The State Department of Transportation announced that Phase I Detours will begin for the Roundabout Project in the City of Oneonta, on Monday, June 2nd and will be continuing for approximately 3 months, weather permitting. Access to the intersection will only be available from Lettis Highway northbound to Main Street eastbound and from Main Street eastbound to Lettis Highway southbound. Motorists are urged to follow separate signed detours for cars and trucks. Passenger vehicles traveling on Main Street will be detoured onto Otsego Street, Fair Street and Grand Street around the construction. 57 year old Paul Geer of Hancock was convicted by a jury in US District Court for 2 counts of coercing and enticing 2 separate children to travel across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity and 2 counts of transporting the children across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity with those children. Geer was a teacher at the Family Foundation School in Hancock, where he used his position of authority to coerce 2 students to travel with him to Maine and Toronto, Canada. where he raped or otherwise sexually abused each of the two children. Sentencing is scheduled for July 9th, where Geer is expected to be sentenced to many years in prison & pay fines up to $250,000, followed by a term of supervised release of up to 5 years after prison.

The Social Security Fraud charge carries a maximum term of 5 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years, Gill could also be ordered to pay restitution to the Social Security Administration for the funds collected.

50 year old Kevin Harrington of Oneonta was sentenced to serve a 3-year term of federal probation and ordered to pay over $150,000.00 in restitution to his former employer, for his previous guilty plea to 2 counts of mail fraud. Harrington admitted that while he was the executive director at First Community Care of Bassett, he submitted fraudulent expense reports seeking reimbursement for the purchase of CPAP machines that were not purchased. Harrington was ordered to serve six months of home confinement and was fined $5,500.00.

A new law that begins January 1st will help new mothers in New York. The state is making it easier for new moms to take time off to care for their health before their babies are born, employees are now able to receive an additional 20 hours of paid sick leave for prenatal care, in addition to the existing sick leave. The state is also using $250,000 to start a grant program that will expand access to community-based program to help train, support and mentor, especially in vulnerable communities.

Deloatch was charged with Reckless Driving & Speed Over 55 mph, he is accused of driving at approximately 40 mph over the posted speed limit, he was issued an Appearance Ticket and scheduled to appear in the Town of Oneonta Court at a later date.

The average claim paid out is between $50 and $100. Every day, DiNapoli's office returns over $1.5 million.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Jeremy Stimpson of Oneonta for Bail Jumping and on 2 Bench Warrants.
