21 year old Matthew Bartosik of Conklin, pleaded guilty in a fourteen-count indictment in Broome County Court, to Murder, Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Criminal Use of a Firearm Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 1st degree Assault, on January 3, 2025, State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 Leslie Avenue in Conklin for a domestic complaint, where a family argument escalated, during which Bartosik shot his uncle, Michael Lewis, multiple times, causing his death & his cousin Jessica Lewis multiple times in the head and back, she underwent surgery and survived. As Law Enforcement approached to reach the barricaded victims and apprehend Bartosik, he fired at the officers. Bartosik will be sentenced on November 14, in Broome County Court and faces a sentence of up to 50 years to life in State Prison.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer met with Oneonta Job Corps students and staff Thursday, Schumer explained that the Trump administration is targeting Job Corps centers for closure & completely eliminate funding for the program. Schumer said the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed a bipartisan bill out of committee that protects funding for Job Corps for next year, and now is calling on the House to follow suit. The Oneonta Job Corps employs 120 people in Oneonta.

State Police are investigating a death of a 16-year-old female following a medical emergency on Saturday, a Trooper responded to a residence on State Route 41 in McGraw, for an unresponsive juvenile, she was unconscious & CPR was already in progress, she was taken to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center & was pronounced deceased a short time later. An investigation by the State Police BCU is ongoing, more information will be released following an autopsy.

A 5-K Walk or run will be held on Sunday October 22nd at 1:30 PM at the Sidney Central School, to raise money for the "Hope & Heroes" program, which supports children being treated for Cancer. Sidney Health Ed Teacher Jonathan Yurka is organizing the event:

The investigation is continuing into the fire of a boxcar in Milford Tuesday afternoon. The fire broke out in Tuesday afternoon in a vintage boxcar on the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley track near the Milford depot. Several Area Fire companies responded to the fire that was battled into Tuesday Evening. Investigators labeled the fire as suspicious, no arrests have been announced.

Bassett Medical Center is Offering Free Depression Screenings with a Bassett psychotherapist in recognition of National Depression Screening Day. The event will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bassett's Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic in Cooperstown. Commerce Chenango announced that the Leadership Chenango Kick Off Dinner & Tecklenburg Award Presentation would be held on Today from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich. The new class will be introduced at the Leadership Chenango Kick-off dinner, which will feature keynote speaker Charlie Andrews of Alvogen and the presentation of the Tecklenburg award to Martin Dietrich, Chairman of NBT Bancorp.

Governor Cuomo announced that $48 million in grants have been awarded for transportation improvements across the State, which will leverage an additional $80 million in federal, state and local funding. The grants are funding projects that will improve transportation infrastructure and support economic development.  Grants are being awarded locally for the Eaton Airport in Norwich for a New maintenance Vehicle, for the Sidney Municipal Airport for Fuel farm upgrades, for New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway Corporation to Relocate interchange between CSX & NYS&W to NYS&W property to improve safety & service on both lines.
