The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.
The State DOT advises motorists that State Route 23 in the Town of Plymouth, just west of Ashcraft Road, has reopened to alternating single-lane traffic, controlled by a temporary signal, as work continues on a culvert replacement project. The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place. Construction began on June 29, and work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting. 47 year old Neil Wesley was sentenced to 25 years in prison for receipt and possession of child pornography in US District Court. As part of his guilty plea, Wesley admitted he had been previously convicted of rape in New York in 2001, he also admitted that from at least December 2024 through February 2025 he received and distributed child pornography & he possessed over 200 images and 18 videos of child pornography. In addition to the 25-year imprisonment term, United States District Judge Anthony J. Brindisi imposed 15 years of supervised release, forfeiture and directed restitution to victims of the offense.

60 year old Robert Scott of Binghamton, was indicted in US District Court on a charge of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and crack cocaine. According to the indictment, on October 30, 2025, Scott possessed with the intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and 28 grams or more of crack cocaine. Scott was also on federal probation at the time of the offense. The charge filed against Scott carries a minimum sentence of 5 years in prison and a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000,000, and a period of supervised release of at least 4 years and up to life, if convicted.

The animal was found in Westford, all of the animals that were exposed to the Raccoon are being treated, Officials urge residents to get all pets & farm animals vaccinated, those that are not vaccinated & are exposed will be euthanized. The 2 cases have led to proposed legislation, the Duty to Intervene Act, making it a felony to not intervene while one of your fellow officers is beating an inmate.

State Police at Binghamton responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton Thursday. The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Bail Jumping and Criminal Contempt, following a violation of a court order issued following his arraignment on a previous Grand Larceny charge. Lazarati was prohibited from leaving the United States and was directed to surrender his passport. Lazarati failed to comply with those conditions, State Police were notified Thursday that Lazarati was attempting to leave the United States and purchased an airline ticket to Qatar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was arrested at the airport, brought back to Troop C, and was processed in and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $35,000 cash, $50,000 credit or $250,000 partially secured bond.

Norwich Police Department executed a search warrant at 41 Cortland Street following an investigation into the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics. 39 year old Shawn Utter of Norwich, & 24 year old Brittany Cox were charged with several Counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Nuisance & Conspiracy, Officers seized cash from suspected drug sales, drug measuring equipment, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, various pills, & weapons, The Village of Sidney Police Department assisted on scene with their drug detecting K9 unit, Utter was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending further proceedings. Cox was processed and arraigned in Norwich City Court, where she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.
State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Grand Larceny, after an investigation revealed that Lazarati was working with the Assigned Counsel Program in Chenango County, Lazarati submitted duplicate billing to Chenango County for the same legal services and accepted payment. Chenango County sustained a financial loss of approximately $4,700. Lazarati was arrested was arrested, and was turned over to members of Troop C, he was processed & then transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
38 year old Ronald Boerner of Andes pleaded guilty in the Town of Andes Court to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, he will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, Impaired Driver’s Program and his license will be revoked for at least six months., if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail. On October 15, 2025, State Police responded to a 2 car accident in Andes, they found that a vehicle was rear-ended when turning into a parking lot, Boerner failed Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested.

Crosby was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat as a Hate Crime, The investigation determined that Crosby posted a threatening comment on Facebook in response to a WBNG news story featuring Senator Webb at a Juneteenth event. Crosby was transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment. State Police also determined that Crosby was in possession of firearms despite being prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction, Police Investigators recovered a rifle, a large capacity ammunition feeding device, and a firearm suppressor, all of which are prohibited under New York State law. Crosby was additionally charged with four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, class “D” felonies.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 51 year old Anthony Sawyer of Norwich Monday following an investigation into a Domestic incident. Deputies responded for a disorderly conduct complaint in progress, deputies determined that Sawyer had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with family members, while intoxicated, he is accused of pointing a rifle at multiple victims, that Sawyer had operated an ATV on a public roadway while intoxicated Sawyer was charged with 4 counts of Menacing, plus 1 count each of Reckless Endangerment, Endangering the Welfare of a child and DWI, he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing.
The Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 20 year old Cristian Navarro Guerrero of Staten Island pleaded guilty In Delhi Town Court to 1 count of Criminal Mischief for an incident On April 15, where SUNY Delhi University Police received a report of a broken window at the first-floor entrance to Catskill Hall. After viewing security camera footage, Navarro Guerrero was identified and arrested without incident, he was placed on 1 year of interim probation. 47 year old Eric Rossman of Stamford appeared in the Town of Harpersfield Court Monday & pleaded guilty to 1 count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and 1 count of Conspiracy. In August of 2025, State Police received a report of stolen tools, at a residence located on Wood Road in Jefferson, it was determined that the stolen tools had previously been moved from a house in Harpersfield. Rossman admitted that he did not originally know that the tools were stolen, as he had put his initials on many of them, Once he was aware that they were stolen, he and one co-defendant moved to evade law enforcement. Rossman was sentenced to 1 year of incarceration to be followed by a one-year conditional discharge.
Former Delaware County Deputy Timothy Tryon pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Petty larceny, for stealing items from the Oneonta Walmart. Tryon was convicted June 18th in Oneonta Town Court, He was fined $500, ordered to pay restitution, and is no longer employed by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

State Attorney General Letitia James today released guidance to help New Yorkers understand their health insurance options and avoid scams as major changes to New York's Essential Plan take effect. Beginning July 1, 2026, New Yorkers enrolled in the Essential Plan with household incomes over 200 percent of the federal poverty level will no longer be eligible for that coverage, which translates to approximately 450,000 New Yorkers who are set to lose Essential Plan coverage. New Yorkers who enrolled in health insurance through New York State of Health can get free help renewing or changing coverage from New York State of Health-certified enrollment assistors by visiting nystateofhealth.ny.gov or calling 1-855-355-5777. Anyone who believes they have been misled, scammed, or improperly enrolled in a health insurance plan is encouraged to contact OAG's Health Care Helpline for assistance.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has elevated a recall of Alfredo sauce distributed in 41 states to its most serious classification after they say a supplier flagged an ingredient for possible Salmonella contamination. The Coffee Connexion Company of Tennessee voluntarily recalled the product on May 6 because it contains a dry milk powder ingredient that was recalled by the supplier due to potential Salmonella contamination. On June 4, the FDA designated the recall as a Class I event, the agency's highest risk category. The product was distributed in multiple states, including New York, The FDA's enforcement report does not indicate whether any illnesses have been reported in connection with the product.

New York Attorney General Letitia James joined a coalition of 36 other attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Justice in securing $36.5 million from CVS Pharmacy, for fraudulently over-billing Medicaid for insulin prescriptions. From 2010 to 2020, CVS knowingly dispensed more insulin to customers than they needed while maintaining that they were reporting the correct amount of insulin in their prescriptions. The fraudulent claims allowed the company to rake in millions in extra reimbursements from Medicaid for insulin distribution. CVS will pay more than $25 million to state Medicaid programs across the country, including $2.25 million to New York.

40 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort appeared in Delaware County Court and was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to 3rd Degree Grand Larceny. Salamey entered into a contract to improve property in the Town of Roxbury, the owner paid him over $360,000 to perform a number of projects, that were not fully completed. Salamey failed to return calls from the owner, he was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury for 2 counts of degree Grand Larceny in 2023, after pleading guilty, Salamey remained at large pending sentencing, State Police located Salamey & arrested him on a warrant, and was sentenced last month.

59 year old Brian Gill of Andes pleaded guilty to a social security fraud, in US District Court in January, Gill admitted that between January 2021 and November 2023, he was collecting social security disability benefits, while he was managing and personally engaging in physical labor for a tree services company he owned and operated. Gill faces a maximum sentence of 5 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000, As part of his plea, Gill agreed to pay restitution to the SSA for the funds he fraudulently collected.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced another court victory against the National Rifle Association and former Executive Vice President & CEO Wayne LaPierre, and other top executives, The judgment will require LaPierre to pay $4.3 million back to the organization LaPierre had sought to overturn the 2024 judgment against him filed by James in 2020, the motion was rejected in State Supreme Court.
