The Town of Colchester Police Department arrested 3 individuals following an investigation into a series of burglaries and larcenies. 21 year old Donavin Brock of Colchester was charged with Burglary, Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Conspiracy, Criminal Mischief, & Aggravated Harassment, 18 year old Tenlei Wood of Walton, was charged with Burglary, Grand Larceny, & Conspiracy and 40 year old Brooke Walley of Andes, was charged with Burglary, following the investigation by the Town of Colchester Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff's Office into multiple incidents involving stolen property, unlawful entry, and related crimes throughout the community. The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be pending, the State Police Forensic Identification Unit assisted in the processing of the crime scenes.


The Sidney Police Department has added K9 Chase, to the department, he is handled by Officer Royce Terry & he is a 1 year old Dutch Shepherd. K9 Chase replaces K9 Riggs who was retired as a police dog this month, but will continue to live with Officer Terry's family, the program has no cost to taxpayers and Chase will be ready for his position in February.


The Annual Sidney Veterans Memorial Park fundraising Bowling tournament will be held November 1, 2, 8, & 9th at East Main Lanes in Sidney this year, Park President Doug Barnard explains:

City of Oneonta officials are asking city residents around the SUNY Oneonta campus to Boil their water before using. on Wednesday the water system lost pressure due to the isolation of a broken water main on East Dormitory Road near the intersection of Bugbee Road on the SUNY Oneonta Campus, which could lead to untreated water containing harmful microbes. NYSEG will be holding a public statement hearing at SUNY Oneonta on Thursday, October 16th at 1:00pm in the Morris Conference Center, for the purpose of receiving comments concerning the proposed changes in the electric and gas delivery rates and practices and the proposed closure of certain walk-in office locations operated by the Company.


Stephen Filan pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon, stemming from the illegal possession of an assault rifle and related firearm components. On May 19th, Binghamton Police responded to a report of Filan in possession of a firearm, he was uncooperative, officers secured a search warrant and an Extreme Risk Protection Order to search Filan’s residence, which resulted in the recovery of a loaded, operable assault rifle with a 25-round magazine holding 24 rounds. Sentencing is scheduled for January 15, 2026 in Broome County Court, Filan will be sentenced to 6 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post Release Supervision.


State tax receipts totaled $59.9 billion through September, the middle of State Fiscal Year, $702.2 million higher than financial plan estimates from the Division of Budget, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Delhi Police Department arrested 21 year old Logan Hitchcock of Delhi on charges of 3rd degree Assault, Unlawful Imprisonment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child following a domestic incident in the Village of Delhi. Officers were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute on Meredith Street, they determined that a verbal altercation had escalated into a physical incident, during which a female victim sustained injuries while holding an infant, she was taken to O’Connor Hospital, Hitchcock was located and taken into custody, He was processed and was arraigned, a Temporary Order of Protection was requested on behalf of the victim and child.


This week, the Susquehanna SPCA was able to take possession of a small farm to assist when they have to rescue a number of larger farm animals, Director Stacie Haynes told WCDO news about the need for this space for their operation:

Haynes said that since 2022, they have had to rescue about 300 farm animals for a variety of reasons, which pointed to the need for this farm space on Campbell Hill Road in Cooperstown.

Governor Kathy Hochul and labor leaders announced the maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit increase for unemployed workers across the state. As part of the current State Budget, the State invested nearly $7 billion to pay off the federal UI Trust Fund loan, and bring the fund to solvency and increase the maximum weekly benefit from $504 to $869. The increase in UI benefits comes at the same time as the federal shutdown impacts about 115,000 federal employees in the state

21 year old Matthew Bartosik of Conklin, pleaded guilty in a fourteen-count indictment in Broome County Court, to Murder, Attempted Murder, Attempted Murder of a Police Officer, Criminal Use of a Firearm Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 1st degree Assault, on January 3, 2025, State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 Leslie Avenue in Conklin for a domestic complaint, where a family argument escalated, during which Bartosik shot his uncle, Michael Lewis, multiple times, causing his death & his cousin Jessica Lewis multiple times in the head and back, she underwent surgery and survived. As Law Enforcement approached to reach the barricaded victims and apprehend Bartosik, he fired at the officers. Bartosik will be sentenced on November 14, in Broome County Court and faces a sentence of up to 50 years to life in State Prison.


U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer met with Oneonta Job Corps students and staff Thursday, Schumer explained that the Trump administration is targeting Job Corps centers for closure & completely eliminate funding for the program. Schumer said the Senate Appropriations Committee has passed a bipartisan bill out of committee that protects funding for Job Corps for next year, and now is calling on the House to follow suit. The Oneonta Job Corps employs 120 people in Oneonta.

Governor Kathy Hochul today directed flags on all State government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek, who passed away on July 6 in the line of duty, while responding to a fire in Conklin. Flags will be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, July 10.


An Audit by the State Comptroller's Office found that the state Department of Health is not adequately overseeing adult care facilities, they failed to conduct timely inspections and lacked documentation to show critical problems were corrected. 18% of allegations had no evidence they were investigated. a few did not have evidence of any plans for an investigation at all. There were 534 adult care facilities operating in New York, serving 37,547 residents. The Audit can be found at osc.ny.gov.

The Binghamton Police Department have released the names of the 2 people who died in a 3 car wreck Monday afternoon at the Court Street construction site in the City's East End. The deceased operator of a Sedan was 49 year old Safwan Aziz of Binghamton, the deceased operator of the SUV was 71 year old Rafael Cuadra of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania , the unidentified driver of the 3rd vehicle suffered only minor injuries.


Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $36 million has been awarded to 48 projects across New York State through the County Infrastructure Grant Program. Locally, The City of Norwich was awarded $1 Million Dollars to build 20 new housing units on Plymouth Street to serve residents 62 years old and older, as well as individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. Funding for this project will allow for infrastructure expansions required to service these homes, including a new sanitary sewer, water supply system, and storm-water system, as well as streets, curbs, and sidewalks.


The Town of New Berlin announced a ROAD CLOSURE today, on Homesville Hill Road. Motorists in the area are advised to use County 34 as an alternate route. The repairs will go on between 6:00 am. to 3:00 pm. today. Also, Unadilla officials announced that Kilkenny Street from Clifton Street to Village line will be closed from 6:15 am to approximately 2:00 pm today.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced Lactalis USA will invest more than $75 million to upgrade both its Walton and Buffalo facilities, enabling them to expand capacity and gain efficiencies. The projects in Delaware and Erie counties include the purchase of new equipment and upgrades that will allow the dairy manufacturer to retain more than 800 full time jobs and create more than 50 new jobs. The Walton plant produces Breakstone’s Sour Cream and Cottage Cheese. It will undergo a $15 million modernization, focusing on automating and expanding the cottage cheese and sour cream production lines, enhancing efficiency, capacity, and sustainability.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Tyler Clark of Unadilla for Criminal Contempt, Harassment, Criminal Mischief & Trespassing following an investigation into a complaint in the Town of Unadilla. Clark is accused of entering the victim’s property, in violation of a valid order of protection, and intentionally caused damage to the Victim’s vehicle, he was subsequently arrested and held at the Otsego County Jail to await arraignment.

Assemblyman Joseph Angelino & State Senator Peter Oberacker and local officials honored Bronze Star Medal for Valor recipient SP4 Herman Anders Jr. by unveiling the highway that will bear his name. Specialist Anders took part in Operation Junction City and was a decorated soldier, earning honors such as the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and National Defense. State Police are targeting speeding and aggressive drivers during a special week-long traffic enforcement initiative now underway through this Sunday, as Speeding is a contributing factor in nearly 1/3rd of all fatal crashes in New York State. Last year, Troopers issued 22,476 total traffic tickets, including 11,175 for speeding and 592 for violations of the Move Over law, During this “Speed Week” enforcement period, Troopers will be using both marked State Police vehicles and unmarked vehicles as part of the operation.


The Delaware County Department of Public Works will be closing County Route 67 in the Town of Tompkins to through traffic at 7:00 am tomorrow to replace a large culvert. The closure is in the vicinity of 5667 County Route 67, the nearest crossroads are Dry Brook Road and Hathaway Pond Road, a detour will be South Dry Brook Road. It is expected that the road will be reopened to one lane traffic by the end of the day on Thursday.

The Otsego County Conservation Association is accepting nominations for its 2025 Conservationist of the Year Award, which honors outstanding contributions to environmental protection, preservation, and education in Otsego County. The State Senate approved a bill Monday that would allow terminally ill people die on their own terms, it would allow a person with an incurable illness to be prescribed life-ending drugs if he or she requests the medication and gets approval from 2 physicians, the bill goes to Governor Hochul for approval.


State DOT Crews responded to the report of embankment slide on I-88 westbound near exits 16 and 17. DOT reports that about 60 to 80 feet of unpaved shoulder backup material at the pavement edge has slid into the ditched median, the left lane has been blocked under DOT supervision and will conduct assessments for repairs. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 28 year old Ryan Oltjenbruns of Unadilla for 2nd 7 3rd Degree Assault, Harassment & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following a domestic incident in the Town of Unadilla. Oltjenbruns allegedly engaged in a physical domestic dispute with a family member in the presence of a minor, by striking the victim in the face, causing serious injury. The victim was transported to Bassett Hospital and later to Albany Medical Center for additional medical treatment, Oltjenbruns was taken in to custody and processed at the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, he was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance and issued an order of protection was issued on behalf of the the victim.


Terrell Heyward of Binghamton, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Murder in Broome County Court and he faces a sentence of up to life in State Prison. On January 11th, Binghamton Police Department responded to 21 Exchange Street, for a report of shots fired, Sarah Hauer was pronounced dead at the scene. Heyward faces Sentencing on August 6th in Broome County Court.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Robert Harris of New Lisbon for 2 counts of Criminal Contempt Friday, following an investigation in to allegations of domestic violence in the Town of New Lisbon. Investigation revealed that during the month of February Harris located a family member at a residence in the Town of Pittsfield and placed the victim in fear for their life by brandishing a baseball bat, he violated a court order prohibiting him from contacting the victim. Harris was located in New Berlin and taken in to custody without incident, he was processed at the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and turned over to correctional staff for Arraignment.


Delaware County Public Health, the New York National Guard and New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is hosting a Citizen Preparedness Training Event on Wednesday, June 11th, Isabella Ziolkowski of Delaware County Public Health explains:

54 year old Jason Burress of Bainbridge appeared in Delaware County Court last week & was sentenced to 6 months in jail. Sidney Police initiated a traffic stop in Sidney on July 11, 2024, Burress was believed to be impaired by drugs, lab test showed that Burress was impaired by methamphetamine. Burress pleaded guilty in April to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, he will serve his term at the Delaware County Correctional Facility.


Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy Aaron Alshaman has been charged with 4 counts of attempted murder and 1 count of Arson, he allegedly set a home on fire on April 9th, while his infant child, the child's mother and her parents were inside. All occupants escaped without injury, an Oneida County Grand Jury has indicted Alshaman on the charges, he faces arraignment on the Grand Jury Indictment shortly.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Michael Andreoli of Exeter, for Criminal Contempt, following an investigation into a 2 car personal injury motor vehicle accident. Andreoli was found to be violating a full stay away order of protection protecting the passenger in the vehicle, he was arrested and held for Arraignment.


Chenango County Department of Public Works announced the closure of the bridge on North Chenango Street over Birdsall Brook in Greene will be closed on May 12th, and will remain closed for 3 to 5 months. State Police announced that 61-year-old Michael Crandall from Oxford, succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash between his motorcycle & a school bus Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Chenango County routes 35 & 32 in the town of Oxford. Crandall was taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, the school bus had 8 children on board, a 12-year-old child was evaluated at Chenango Memorial Hospital, no other children reported injuries. The unidentified school bus drive & an aid were evaluated at the scene and did not need further treatment, The crash remains under investigation.

19-year-old Darius Palmer of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court Wednesday for the killing of 41 year old Tyrell Norris on September 30th of 2024 in Binghamton. Palmer was arrested in the Bronx in October on an arrest warrant for a separate crime, he was returned to Broome County & was found guilty for 1st degree Manslaughter and on a separate Assault charge , he was also ordered to serve 1 year in Broome County Jail, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision on the assault charge.


The Oneonta Common Council approved spending $230,000 on reconstruction of the Market and South Main streets intersection to fix damage from a water main break last month. The council held a special meeting Tuesday & voted unanimously to allocate the funding.

5 corrections officers appeared in Oneida County Court on Tuesday to discuss plea offers related to the beating death of Robert Brooks, an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in December. Earlier this month, a judge informed some of the officers who requested additional time to deliberate that he would need a decision from them this week, none of the officers had reached a conclusion. Attorneys representing the officers cited recently receiving discovery information from the prosecution that morning, which required additional review, they were ordered to return to Oneida County Court on May 13th.


23 year old Dekwaun Hicks of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court to 6 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision, for Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The charges stem from a June 26, 2024, incident, when members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and the Binghamton Police Department conducted a vehicle stop based on information that Hicks was in possession of a firearm, they recovered a loaded 9mm handgun, ammunition and a quantity of methamphetamine pills. Hicks received additional jail time as he was arrested on a drug charge while out on bail.


Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded Saturday to a burglary complaint at the Big Dipper BBQ 2 restaurant in Conklin, a Review of security footage showed 4 individuals breaking in causing several thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to the door and air conditioning unit of the businesses. Several tubs of ice cream and bottles of soda were taken by the suspects Officers arrested 20 year old Tracy Bryce of Conklin for Criminal Mischief & Burglary, 20 year old Jordan Wilson of for Criminal Mischief and Burglary, 2 juveniles were also charged. Bryce and Wilson were processed and arraigned, the juveniles were processed and arraigned before being released to their families.

The New York State Budget is 14 days late, and budget extenders have been implemented to pay state employees and keep state programs functioning. Assemblyman Joe Angelino said that the hold-up is one that has come up many times over the last 3 decades in Albany:

Angelino said that the big sticking point is the reforms to the state's discovery laws, which involves including late evidence being turned in from District Attorney's to Defense attorneys prior to a trial, the Governor wants some reform, much of the legislature does not.


The annual Recruit New York Days will be on April 26th or 27th, where fire companies & EMS squads are looking to add to their ranks, Roger Barnhart of the Bainbridge Fire Department told WCDO News that at the Bainbridge & Unadilla events, there will be additional programs for the community:

The Chenango County Department of Public works will close County Road 39 between Old Gifford Road and State Route 206 in Bainbridge, starting Tuesday for the replacement of a large culvert. The road closure is expected to last 1 to 3 days, depending on weather conditions.

State Police arrested 37 year old Christopher Banks of Nineveh for Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. A search warrant was executed on April 4th, Banks was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that 38 year old Mark Banks of Nineveh sexually abused a dairy cow while employed at a farm in the town of Colesville. Banks was charged with Sexual Misconduct, both were issued appearance tickets to the Colesville Town Court on April 24th.


Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 57 year old Bruce Hines of the town of Union after they executed a search warrant Thursday, Hines resisted officers and had to be detained after a brief struggle. Officers confiscated Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Digital Scales, Packaging Material and $304 in cash, Hines was charged with multiple Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 2 Counts Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, plus Obstructing Governmental Administration & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.


The Otsego County Solid Waste Department Plastic Film Recycling Challenge ends today. Participating schools collected film plastics such as Grocery Bags, Bread bags, Bubble wrap, The winner of the each division will receive an ice cream social event soon, last year over 6 tons of the plastics were diverted out of the waste stream in otsego county.


Utica University has announced its commencement speaker for the undergraduate ceremony in 2025 will be Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of Chobani, Ulukaya will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Utica University, he emigrated from his native Turkey in 1994 to the US, he purchased a closed factory in Edmeston in 2007 with a small business loan, Chobani became he biggest seller of Greek Yogurt in the world by 2012. The undergraduate ceremony is set for May 9th at The Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.


Delhi firefighters responded Sunday at around 12:00 Noon for a structure fire at 220 Rosa Circle. Early reports suggest that an electric car in a garage caught fire, the structure was a total loss, WCDO will have more information when it is released.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for January 2025. The State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in January, locally, Chenango County had 4.4% unemployment, Delaware County 4.9% & Otsego County 5.3%.

Chobani is gifting $250,000 each to infrastructure projects in Central New York, including for the Unadilla Community Farm's buildout of a solar-powered commercial kitchen and classroom space in West Edmeston, the kitchen will turn fresh harvests into nutritious meals for those in need, will also double as a teaching space for the Unadilla Community Farm's Beginning Farmer Training Program. Food made on-site will be donated to regional food pantries.


State Police are continuing with their St. Patrick’s Day special detail through today. Drivers can still expect to encounter DWI patrols, sobriety checkpoints, State Police will also be ticketing distracted drivers, and they will also conduct underage drinking and unlawful sales to minors details during the campaign. Last year, Troopers arrested 132 people for DWI, issued 124 tickets for distracted driving and 5,576 tickets in total.


The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that Applications are being accepted through April 1st for their annual summer camp for children from ages 9 through 12, for the weeks of June 29-July 5 and August 3-9. Children from economically challenged families and those who can benefit from positive interaction with deputy sheriffs should apply, Camp occurs at Keuka Lake in Penn Yan. The State DOT Reminds motorists that starting today, culvert work will begin on State Route 17 westbound in the Town of Sanford. Drivers should follow the posted detour using Exit 83, left onto Broome County Route 28 west for half a mile, then left back onto SR 17. Access for oversized vehicles will be restricted throughout the closure, which is expected to last 2 weeks.
