Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division arrested 2 Norwich Juveniles last week for 3rd degree Burglary, Criminal Mischief, Grand Larceny & Conspiracy in the 6th degree. On the morning of August 17, a business in the Town of Norwich was burglarized by the juveniles, property was damaged and merchandise was stolen. The Juvenile’s were brought to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing, they were arraigned in Chenango County Youth Court, the case was turned over to Chenango County Family Court, where the Juveniles were released into the custody of their parents/guardians.
The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force were alerted to a stolen SUV by multiple license plate readers, the vehicle was located in Binghamton , officers approached the stolen vehicle, & the driver, 32 year old Zachary Swire of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania drove away, he was wanted on 2 active arrest warrants for felony theft of a motor vehicle and related charges. Swire refused to comply, struck multiple vehicles & went back into Pennsylvania on 3 wheels, he went off the road, attempted to flee on foot & was taken into custody. He was charged in New York for Reckless Endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property & obstruction governmental administration, he was turned back over to Pennsylvania authorities to face felony charges in his home state.

The State DEC welcomed 9 new graduates from the 24th Basic School for New York State Forest Rangers in Albany Monday afternoon. In 2023, Forest Rangers conducted 370 search and rescue missions, extinguished 146 wildfires covering nearly 1,400 acres, participated in dozens of prescribed fires that served to rejuvenate more than 1,000 acres of land, and worked on cases that resulted in hundreds of tickets or arrests.
The Chenango County Historical Society will participate in Giving Tuesday, today, Giving Tuesday asks people to donating to local charities, Giving Tuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold their “Be the Light,” Holiday celebration tonight, Contributors and community leaders are invited to attend the lighting ceremony and reception at 5:30pm at Newton House, 179 North Broad Street, Norwich. For more information, call 607-337-4151.

Lambrecht Auction in Sidney held their 2nd Annual Sidney EMS Charity event Saturday at their Sidney Location on Delaware Avenue. Jared Lambrecht told WCDO News this afternoon that they raised $50,800 for the Sidney Emergency Squad, that is in need of a new fully loaded ambulance, which costs about $250,000. Last year they raised $18,000 in their 1st charity auction effort for the Emergency squad.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Michael VanDerWeert of Guilford & 47 year old Dawn Cavanaugh of North Carolina, for Burglary, Petty Larceny, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy. Deputies responded to a burglary complaint at a business in the Town of Norwich, where someone broke into the building and stole multiple items. The vehicle used in the burglary was spotted at a business in the Village of Oxford, VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were arrested and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office where they were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Saturday to an ATV crash near Fuller Hollow Road in the Town of Hamden. Prior to Deputies’ arrival, Delaware County 911 reported that a victim had been privately transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in the Village of Walton with a second victim still on scene. Deputies located the 2nd victim, an 11-year-old male, at a residence, who was transported to Albany Medical Center by Life Net for non-life-threatening injuries. The 1st Victim was a 13-year-old female who was pronounced deceased at the Delaware Valley Hospital, due to injuries sustained from the crash.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 2.3% in October according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Local collections totaled $1.84 billion for the month, up $41 million from the previous October, County and city collections outside of New York City increased by only .4%, 36 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.
The Chenango County Historical Society will participate in Giving Tuesday, on December 3rd. Giving Tuesday asks people to donating to local charities, Giving Tuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Also, the annual Holiday Open House and Museum Store Sunday will be from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on December 1st at the Chenango County Historical Society on Rexford Street in Norwich.

The FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to assist in combating the Catskills Wildfires, The Grant Declaration will allow for funding to help cover costs associated with responding to the Jennings Creek/Sterling State Park wildfire and protecting those in its path. Statewide there were 13 wildfires reported Sunday, encompassing more than 5,000 acres, the state wide burn ban remains in effect.
State Police at Troop C in Sidney announced that 24 people were charged with DWI, from the period of November 1st through November 12th. State Police will continue with DWI patrols, with increased efforts during the upcoming Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday seasons.
Firefighters from Sidney Center & surrounding departments responded to the report of a structure fire late Sunday morning at 1129 Vandervoort Hill Road. The fire was contained to the basement and was quickly extinguished, no injuries were reported.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will join elected officials and educators to encourage Binghamton University students to apply to the DoD Cyber Service Academy scholarship program, which provides full college tuition in return for public service in the Department of Defense or the Intelligence Community. Successful applicants will serve one year in the DoD or the IC as a civilian employee for each year of their scholarship. Gillibrand's event begins at 3:00 this afternoon at the Binghamton University Innovative Technologies Complex at 85 Murray Hill Road in Vestal.

With a suggested donation of $20, community members can purchase a light that celebrates or memorializes a loved one. Names of honorees will be displayed at CMH throughout December. Proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary’s efforts to support patient services at CMH, the lighting ceremony and reception on Tuesday, December 3rd at 5:30pm at Newton House. The Norwich Police Department investigated a stabbing on Rexford Street in the City of Norwich Wednesday at about 5:30 PM. Police arrested 40 year old Jason Chase of Marathon for 2nd degree Assault & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Norwich Police Department located the victim who had stab wounds to his neck and forearm, the victim was taken to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, Officers located and arrested Chase at Gold Street in Norwich, the stated that during an altercation, Chase allegedly produced a “brass knuckle knife,” and stabbed the victim several times, he was arraigned & was being held without bail, pending further hearings.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that law enforcement agencies throughout the State issued 20,714 tickets for various vehicle and traffic law violations, including 4,374 tickets for speeding and 966 tickets for drug or alcohol impaired driving during a statewide mobilization. The Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign ran from August 30 through September 2nd.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for the passage of legislation that would provide free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all schoolchildren regardless of income:

Gillibrand said that Studies show that Free school meals are associated with a variety of positive outcomes, including improved attendance rates and school performance, fewer behavioral incidents, lower suspension rates, better health outcomes, and reduced financial stress for students and families.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Ronnie Hernandez on a Fugitive from Justice complaint. The Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division received information that Hernandez was an Inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility & he had an active warrant from the Pennsylvania for stealing a motor vehicle, valued at $30,000. Fernandez was arrested and arraigned on the Fugitive from Justice Complaint at the Delaware County Central Arraignment Court and remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending extradition to the State of Pennsylvania.
23 year old Elijah Gibson of Endicott, was sentenced today in Broome County Court to 5 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On December 30, 2023, in the Village of Endicott, Gibson possessed a loaded and operable 9mm firearm, leading to his arrested & conviction.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8-count indictment against 32 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville for the murder of his wife Samantha, and the attempted murder of their 2 children. Garnier was indicted for 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Criminal use of a firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for possessing assault weapons, he pleaded not guilty to each charge & was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office without bail.
State Police arrested 55-year-old Daniel Erickson of Greene, for 2nd degree Rape with a victim under the age of 15, and endangering the welfare of a child, in Bath New York earlier this year. Erickson previously pleaded guilty in April to luring a 16-year-old child in Broome County after having multiple sexually charged texts, at the time he was the Johnson City Middle School Principal.
The Chenango County Historical Society and the Chenango County Historian’s Office will collaborate on “An America 250 Conversation.” These two organizations are seeking input from the people of Chenango County on how local communities will participate in the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The discussion will be tonight from 6–8 pm. at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus.
Chenango County Habitat for Humanity will be hosting their annual yard sale fundraiser today from 9 am. to 5 PM, tomorrow & Saturday from 9 am. to 3 PM, on State Route 12 in Oxford next to the Mirabito Gas Station. There will be a variety of items available for sale, including adult and children’s clothing, shoes and boots and much more.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Joseph Clary of Oneonta for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. Clary was charged following an investigation in to a registered sex offender failing to abide by the State Sex Offender Registry, he had relocated from his residence in the Town of Oneonta in March of 2024 and did not make the proper notifications to authorities, he was processed and was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.
51 year old John Wilson of Binghamton was sentenced as a 2nd time felony offender in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The sentencing followed a jury trial in April where a jury was empaneled, and opening statements were delivered, shortly before the first witness was called, Wilson opted to enter a guilty plea. Wilson was arrested in January of 2023, after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at the storefront located at 42 Clinton Street in the City of Binghamton, they seized cocaine and fentanyl, a digital scale and packaging material.
48 year old Edward Monk of Binghamton was sentenced last week in Broome County Court to 3.5 years to 7 years in State Prison for Attempted Arson & Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by Inmate. On December 9th, 2023 Monk set fire to 2 trucks at a Mirabito gas station on Upper Front Street. On March 15, 2024, while incarcerated at Broome County Jail, Monk threw a cup of urine at forensic workers and a corrections sergeant.

On July 3rd, Norwich Police Department received an emergency call about a Burglary in progress on Westcott Street in the City of Norwich. Officers responded and took 26 year old Adam Ferguson of Norwich into custody, he was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Mischief & Criminal Trespass. Police reported that the woman called & said that an unknown male was climbing a ladder from her backyard and was trying to enter her 3rd floor apartment & tried to force open a door & enter. Officers found Ferguson still on the ladder. Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach stated that Ferguson is on Parole for felony assault on a police officer in 2020, he was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $25,000 bail.
25 year old Sean Gillespie of Bovina pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court last week. Gillespie appeared in County Court on July 1st for a conference on his pending indictment, After the conference, he pleaded guilty, he admitted that on March 13th in the Village of Delhi, he possessed a quantity of fentanyl with intent to sell, he will be sentenced to 3 years in state prison, followed by 1 year of post release supervision, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Chad Walters of Bainbridge for failing to abide by the State Sex Offender Registry, by failing to report an address change & Failing to Complete the Annual Verification. Walters had relocated from the Town of Otego in the beginning of 2024. State Troopers located Walters last week, he was processed on an arrest warrant as well as the new charges and was being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for future court action.

Gayle is accused of threatening the victim with a pair of scissors during the dispute, he was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Office, he was processed & was then turned over to the jail to await future court action.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Joseph Clary of Oneonta for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. Clary was charged following an investigation in to a registered sex offender failing to abide by the State Sex Offender Registry, he had relocated from his residence in the Town of Oneonta in March of 2024 and did not make the proper notifications to authorities, he was processed and was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.
51 year old John Wilson of Binghamton was sentenced as a 2nd time felony offender in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The sentencing followed a jury trial in April where a jury was empaneled, and opening statements were delivered, shortly before the first witness was called, Wilson opted to enter a guilty plea. Wilson was arrested in January of 2023, after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at the storefront located at 42 Clinton Street in the City of Binghamton, they seized cocaine and fentanyl, a digital scale and packaging material.
48 year old Edward Monk of Binghamton was sentenced last week in Broome County Court to 3.5 years to 7 years in State Prison for Attempted Arson & Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by Inmate. On December 9th, 2023 Monk set fire to 2 trucks at a Mirabito gas station on Upper Front Street. On March 15, 2024, while incarcerated at Broome County Jail, Monk threw a cup of urine at forensic workers and a corrections sergeant.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested Johnathon Loomis and Brionna Anzano, both of Oxford, for a variety of charges including Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Nuisance, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Members of the Sheriff's Office assisted New York State Parole, for a search of Loomis's residence, they discovered large quantities controlled substances, packing materials, a scale, suspected proceeds from drug sales, it was also found that several juveniles were present at the residence and were in close proximity while controlled substances were being ingested. Anzano was released on an appearance ticket and is to appear in the Town of Oxford Court at a later date. Loomis was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility, pending an appearance in Chenango County Court for the Parole Violation, he will also appear in the Town of Oxford Court at a later date.
The Norwich Police Department is investigating a stabbing on Brown Avenue in Norwich Monday evening at approximately 11:40 PM. Norwich officers responded to the scene and found a 29-year-old male who had been stabbed multiple times, he was rushed to the emergency room at UHS in Norwich, he was transferred to Wilson Hospital with a collapsed lung and other serious medical conditions. Norwich officers any detectives have been collecting evidence and following up on leads and they are asking that if the public has any information to contact the police department at 607-334-2424.

State Police at Troop C are investigating a report of a stolen golf cart from the Jellystone Campground in the town of Union around March 13th or 14th. The cart is a 4-seater, is platinum in color, whoever took the golf cart also did some damage around the campground and ended up losing the bumper. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported altercation between two groups of individuals at a residence located on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton. It is alleged that 22-year-old William Pomeroy of Downsville, 25-year-old Gabriella Albertina of Walton, and 23-year-old Reece Spatafora went to the residence of 29-year-old Brendan Henderson with intentions of confronting Henderson about posts and comments made on social media. An altercation ensued during which a handgun and a long gun were alleged to have been displayed, and one of the weapons was alleged to have been fired several times, Pomeroy and Henderson both sustained injuries. On Monday, the Town of Walton Court issued Criminal Summons for all parties on a variety of charges, All were arrested and released to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Gerald Johnson of Oneonta on an Sealed Indictment Arrest Warrant issued by the Delaware County Grand Jury. On April 16th, the Delaware County Criminal Investigations Unit and Road Patrol division, Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded to a residence in the Town of Oneonta, Johnson was located and arrested in Lantern Hill Mobile Home Park in the Town of Oneonta. Johnson was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Petty Larceny, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $30,000.00 cash bail Or $100,000.00 secured bond. Johnson is scheduled to appear in the Delaware County Court at a later date.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in identifying a white truck regarding 2 separate burglaries to a barn on Bryce Road in the Town of Sanford. Video of the truck in question can be viewed at the Broome County Sheriff's You Tube page. On March 19th, a rust-colored 1930 Farmall tractor was stolen, on April 10th, an orange Moped, Blue Yamaha dirt bike and various tools were stolen, the same white truck was at both burglaries. Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 45 year old Hayes Cutting of Bainbridge pleaded guilty to 1 Count of Aggravated Family Offense in Delaware County Court Monday. Cutting admitted that on January 28, 2023, in the Village of Sidney, he intentionally choked an 18-year-old female, he will be sentenced to a state prison for 1.5 to 3 years, he is currently serving a 5-year state prison sentence for unrelated assault charges.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 28 year old Jessica Lopez of Sidney was convicted of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court Monday. Lopez appeared in Delaware County Court for an arraignment on drug related charges, she pleaded guilt after she admitted that she possessed fentanyl in the Village of Sidney on February 27, she intended to sell. Lopez will be sentenced to 6.5 years in state prison, and 2 years of post-release supervision on June 10th.
38 year old Tristan Skeete of Brooklyn was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury, on one count of Assault, On February 20, Skeete allegedly caused physical injury to another inmate at the Delaware County Correctional Facility, where he was being held as a federal inmate for violating the terms of his post-release supervision. Skeete can face up to 7 years in state prison.
Dave Johnson of Unadilla has organized a meeting in Unadilla tonight called “Introduction to Preparing for the Inevitable”, with a series of experts on what to do before your final days, Johnson told WCDO who the speakers will be:

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Gerald Johnson of Oneonta on an Sealed Indictment Arrest Warrant issued by the Delaware County Grand Jury. On April 16th, the Delaware County Criminal Investigations Unit and Road Patrol division, Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded to a residence in the Town of Oneonta, Johnson was located and arrested in Lantern Hill Mobile Home Park in the Town of Oneonta. Johnson was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, 2 counts of Grand Larceny, and 1 count of Petty Larceny, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $30,000.00 cash bail Or $100,000.00 secured bond. Johnson is scheduled to appear in the Delaware County Court at a later date.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's help in identifying a white truck regarding 2 separate burglaries to a barn on Bryce Road in the Town of Sanford. Video of the truck in question can be viewed at the Broome County Sheriff's You Tube page. On March 19th, a rust-colored 1930 Farmall tractor was stolen, on April 10th, an orange Moped, Blue Yamaha dirt bike and various tools were stolen, the same white truck was at both burglaries. Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 45 year old Hayes Cutting of Bainbridge pleaded guilty to 1 Count of Aggravated Family Offense in Delaware County Court Monday. Cutting admitted that on January 28, 2023, in the Village of Sidney, he intentionally choked an 18-year-old female, he will be sentenced to a state prison for 1.5 to 3 years, he is currently serving a 5-year state prison sentence for unrelated assault charges.

NYSEG reports that more power has been restored in the 4 local counties this afternoon, the number of customers without power is about 1300, the heavy wet snow has brought down tree limbs & power lines, Crews are continuing to work to get power restored as soon as possible.
Area Fire departments & Emergency Squads will be hosting "Open Houses" this month, many on Saturday April 13th to coincide with the state's "Recruit New York" campaign, with some holding their events at other times, Bainbridge Emergency Squad member Roger Barnhart visited WCDO this morning & commented on local recruitment efforts:

The State Senate has approved the confirmation of Steven James as the new State Police Superintendent. James has more than 32 years in Law Enforcement, he becomes the 18th Superintendent in State Police history.
Governor Hochul announced a four-year project to revamp the technology at the State Department of Motor Vehicles. The state is contracting a with a new software company to upgrade the agency’s aging technology systems, which was found to be lacking as they re-opened following the COVID 19 pandemic. Fast Enterprises will be tasked with upgrading the DMV systems in 2 phases over the next 4 years, Fast Enterprises software is being used in 15 other states.

Surgical Services will include General surgery, including skin, soft tissue, and abdominal procedures, Minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat abdominal issues plus colonoscopies. The Surgeons are also on call at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta for emergency surgical needs.
