Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

In the Republican Primaries locally, Peter Oberacker & Alexander Portelli are seeking the nomination to be on the ballot for the 19th Congressional District, in the 51st State Senate District, the Republican candidates are Chris Tague & Terry Bernardo, for Otsego County Sheriff, Incumbent Rich Devlin faces a challenge from Mike Stalter, In Afton, Jason Wicks is challenging long time Town Supervisor John Lawrence.

State Police at Troop C responded to the report of a Motorcycle and SUV accident at State 434 in Owego. Troopers & 1st responders attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. The operator of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased, the driver of the SUV was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for evaluation and treatment. The investigation remains on-going. The identity of the motorcyclist will be released once notifications are made to next of kin.
$6.3 million of the $54 million distributed to SUNY schools are going to Southern Tier universities, SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. announced that $5.8 million of that money will go to Binghamton University while the remaining $500,000 will go toward SUNY Delhi, for student services and research performed by the universities.

50 year old Paul Graham of Binghamton, was sentenced following his conviction for Assault, & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Graham was sentenced in Broome County Court to a term of 12½ years in State Prison with 5 years of post-release supervision. The conviction stems from an incident on January 4, 2025, when officers with the Binghamton Police Department responded to a disturbance, they found a male victim suffering from a puncture wound to his chest. The victim was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center, requiring emergency heart surgery to survive the life threatening injury.

Vestal Police responded Wednesday to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the area of 581 Sequoia Lane, officers encountered an individual who was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm. During the course of the interaction, officers made numerous requests for the individual to drop the knife. State Police announced that the individual was identified as 38 year old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy of Vestal, he has succumbed to his injuries.

State Police responded to a 3 vehicle crash on State Route 12 in the town of Greene, where a Mazda driven by 22 year old Makayla Cummings of Utica, was traveling south on State Route 12, when she crossed into the opposing lane, striking a Ford Focus head-on, driven by 44 year old Angel Kiekel of Nineveh. Cummings continued off the roadway and struck a parked Honda Civic, then she struck the exterior of a residence. Cummings & Keikel were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Cummings faces charges for the incident.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident on I-81 in the City of Binghamton Thursday morning. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and emergency personnel responded to a 3-car accident on I-81 south at the off ramp of Exit 12, they found a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver entrapped in the vehicle, they attempted to extinguish the flames, the U-Haul operator was extricated and transported to Wilson Medical Center, but was was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The U-Haul was towing a vehicle, after merging from Route 17 and was approaching the off ramp of Exit 12 when an SUV attempted to merge across several lanes and struck the U-Haul, causing the operator to lose control and collide with a DOT attenuator truck. The identity of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin.

State Police and local EMS responded to a 2 vehicle crash Thursday evening at about 7:00 PM, at State Highway 8 and State Highway 7 in the town of Bainbridge. an SUV driven by 79 year old John Kessler of Afton went through a steady red light into the path of a tractor trailer driven by 61 year old Neal Jorgensen of Guilford, he was unable to avoid striking the SUV. Kessler was taken to Wilson Medical Center, while Jorgensen was brought to AO Fox Hospital Tri-Town in Sidney. Injuries were not life threatening.

State Police were dispatched Thursday by the Delaware County 911 Center to an assault on County Route 17 in the town of Hancock. 40 year old Nelson Lopez of Roscoe, violated an order of protection and caused physical injury to Julianna Stowers-Lopez of Roscoe, who also caused serious injury to Lopez by stabbing him in the upper body. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by separate ambulances to Wilson Medical Center. Both were released from the hospital Friday, Lopez was charged Criminal Contempt & 2nd degree Assault, Stowers-Lopez was charged with 1st degree Assault, Both were transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment.

51 year old John Wilson of Binghamton was sentenced as a 2nd time felony offender in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The sentencing followed a jury trial in April where a jury was empaneled, and opening statements were delivered, shortly before the first witness was called, Wilson opted to enter a guilty plea. Wilson was arrested in January of 2023, after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at the storefront located at 42 Clinton Street in the City of Binghamton, they seized cocaine and fentanyl, a digital scale and packaging material.

State Police responded early Monday morning to a domestic dispute at 10 Debra Lee Drive, Apalachin. Troopers and EMS personnel provided lifesaving treatment to an injured male and female at the scene. The female died as a result of injuries sustained during the domestic dispute. The injured male was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he currently remains in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a multi-vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 12A in the Town of Chenango at about 8:10 AM this morning. Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrols received a report of a stolen Kia SUV in the Town of Chenango, a patrol recognized the stolen vehicle waiting at a stop light and initiated a traffic stop, the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, running a red light, the deputy returned to his vehicle and began to initiate what would ultimately be a short pursuit, with the stolen Kia colliding with two other vehicles less than a mile from the site of the original traffic stop. The driver of 1 of the vehicles hit, sustained serious injuries and was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the stolen Kia was identified as a minor, sustained minor injuries and was also taken to Wilson. The investigation is continuing.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 57 year old John Sheldrick of Edmeston following an investigation into a menacing complaint. Sheldrick was charged with Criminal Possession of a weapon, Menacing, Criminal Mischief & Aggravated Harassment, he was found to be in possession of a weapon, menacing the victim, intentionally damage the property of another and harassment, Sheldrick was held at the Otsego County Sheriffs Office, pending court action.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 26 year old John Macrabie of Walton, was arraigned on a 4 count indictment in Delaware County Court. Macrabie was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors & Criminal Sexual Act, he is accused of sending a child naked pictures of himself to entice sexual acts, which allegedly occurred, in the presence of a 2-year-old child. Macrabie pleaded not guilty, he was released to the supervision of the Delaware County Probation Department, the case is scheduled for a conference on September 5th.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Saturday to the apartments at 101 Hooper Road for complaint of shots fired. Deputies located a male suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen on the lawn, he was taken to Wilson Hospital and was in stable condition following surgery. 25 year old Jeffrey Gates of Endwell was charged with Assault with a Weapon, Criminal Use of a Firearm & Reckless Endangerment, he was taken to Broome County Central Arraignment and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, the investigation is continuing.

Broome County Sheriff's Office responded Wednesday, afternoon to a work zone accident on the I-88 westbound bridge north of I-81. The investigation found that after a heavy downpour, an employee exiting a port-a-John was struck by a passing water truck traveling within the construction area in reverse, which ran over the worker’s legs and lower torso. The victim remained conscious was transported to Wilson Hospital. The investigation revealed a questionable placement of the portable facility, no charges have been filed, the accident report was sent to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 48 year old John Jormack of Franklin has been indicted for 3 counts of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, for allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a child less than 11 years old and a child less than 13 years old in the Town of Franklin. Jormack is being held in the Delaware County Jail on $50,000 bail.

The Village of Sidney Police Department responded yesterday afternoon at about 2:50 PM, to the report of a unconscious female lying in the middle of Sunset Avenue. Police were advised that the female had been struck by a vehicle, 14 year old Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City & was transferred to SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she remains in stable but critical condition with bleeding & pressure on the brain, an upper spine fracture & fractured ribs according to family, The driver, 31 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney left the scene and returned a short time later, she was charged with Aggravated DWI, with a BAC of .18 or higher, plus DWI, Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Reckless Driving, Vehicular Assault & Escape for allegedly attempting to leave the Police Station, along with several other lesser charges. Baker was arraigned in the Town of Delhi court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. The investigation is ongoing which could result in more charges being filed.

Police were advised that the female had been struck by a vehicle, 14 year old Anielle McEwan-Lomnicki was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City & was transferred to SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse where she remains in stable but critical condition with bleeding & pressure on the brain, an upper spine fracture & fractured ribs according to family, The driver, 31 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney left the scene and returned a short time later, she was charged with Aggravated DWI, with a BAC of .18 or higher, plus DWI, Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, Reckless Driving, Vehicular Assault & Escape for allegedly attempting to leave the Police Station, along with several other lesser charges. Baker was arraigned in the Town of Delhi court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail. The investigation is ongoing which could result in more charges being filed.
The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that 3 people died and another was hospitalized after they were hit by a car in Newark Valley Wednesday afternoon. According to the Sheriff’s Office, an 18-year-old man was driving south on State Route 38 around 11:20 am Wednesday and hit 4 pedestrians walking on the shoulder. 66 year old John Stephens, 25 year old Kurtis Acker & 52 year old Doreen Wood were killed, a 27-year-old woman was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse in critical condition. All 4 pedestrians were from Newark Valley.

About a dozen people were arrested at a protest at the Johnson City Wegman's Parking lot last night. People were protesting the police brutality cases of Tyre Nichols in Memphis & the Hamail Waddell keeling incident by Binghamton Police January 1st. State Police responded Friday to State Route 26 in the town of Maine for a report of a 1 vehicle crash. When a trooper arrived, the vehicle was upside down and the male driver was still inside. 65 year old Mark Truesdail was transported to Wilson Medical Center where he later died. An investigation revealed that Truesdail was south on State Route 26 when he left the roadway, went into a ditch, which caused the vehicle to go airborne and strike trees.

New York celebrated Juneteenth today, when the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act was signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul. The law will make it easier to sue over discriminatory voting policies and require areas with a history of civil right violations to get approval before changing election rules.
State Troopers were dispatched Friday to a report of a drowning at Highland Park in the town of Union. When troopers arrived, a 12-year-old boy had already been pulled out of the pool by lifeguards and CPR was being performed. The 12-year-old was not breathing and had no pulse. Troopers, EMT & members if the Endwell Fire Department eventually had the 12-year-old breathing and did have a pulse when he was transported to Wilson Hospital, & he was later airlifted to Upstate University Hospital where he is still listed in critical condition.

State Police arrested 22 year old Jessica Winans of Unadilla for the felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle as well as Driving While Intoxicated, following an accident on September 6th. Troopers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle that struck a tree on Plankenhorn Road in the town of Sidney. Winans was the only person in the vehicle, she was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for the treatment of injuries to the face & ankle, and she was issued appearance tickets to the Sidney Town Court on September 23rd.

Bush was arraigned in Norwich City Court & was being held without bail pending future court action. State Police arrested 32 year old Brittany Parsons of Deposit for DWI, after Troopers were dispatched to the report of a vehicle on its side and against a tree on Old Route 17 in the town of Sanford. Parsons was extricated from the vehicle; she was transported to Wilson Hospital & was issued appearance tickets to the town of Sanford court on December 8th.
New York’s new coronavirus testing requirement for travelers began today. In the 22nd Congressional District, Claudia Tenney is leading over democratic incumbent Anthony Brindisi, in the 19th District, Brindisi won that seat over Tenney 2 years ago. Antonio Delgado wins re-election over Republican Kyle Van De Water. The Broome County Sheriff's Office reported that 2 people were indicted following an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old Kayla Kunkel, who was on the autism spectrum. 56-year-old Renee Kunkel and 61-year-old Edward Kunkel were indicted for 2nd degree manslaughter, Endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, & endangering the welfare of a child. Deputies & EMS responded to 40 Theresa Blvd in the town of Chenango for the report of a person not breathing, they found Kayla Kunkel and performed CPR, before she was taken to Wilson Hospital, where she later died. The investigation determined Kayla Kunkel was not capable of caring for herself and her death was from "inadequate guardianship.” 2 other children were living in the residence, in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
The Chenango County Board of Elections announced that a hacker attack against their computer system has raised concerns that some emailed absentee ballot applications may not be processed. The Chenango Board of Elections has advised anyone who emailed an absentee ballot application after Oct. 15 to call 337-1760 to verify that it had been received. The Computers are being repaired & the State Board of elections believes the issue will not affect the election results.
The Sidney Police Department responded to a fight in progress call on Smith Street in the Village of Sidney. Officers located the victim lying on the sidewalk being tended to by local residents. Officers located 23 year old John Rathbun of Sidney at the scene; he was arrested and charged with harassment, aggravated harassment, criminal mischief & Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation. Rathbun was arraigned in the Village of Sidney Court where a temporary order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim, he was released on an appearance ticket, At 7:50 PM Monday, Rathbun was found to be in violation of the temporary order of protection, he was then charged with Criminal contempt, he was arraigned virtually, & was again released & was ordered to appear in court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies performed a traffic-stop on River Street in the Village of Sidney last Thursday night; they arrested 33 year old Carmine DeClemente of Sidney for unlawful possession of marijuana & operating a vehicle without a headlight. Deputies seized an undisclosed amount of marijuana from the vehicle; DeClemente was issued an appearance ticket for the Village of Sidney Court on a later date to answer the charges.

Chenango County Sheriff's Department arrested 36 year old Kelly Gillet of Johnson City, for the shooting death of 39 year old John Ryan of Sherburne. Ryan's body was found at 7 Gould Drive in Sherburne, Gillet was charged with 2nd degree murder, and she faces court action shortly.
Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak announced that 20 year old Caleb Casteline of Johnson City Pleaded Guilty today to 1st degree manslaughter, for the stabbing of Q-Quan Richardson of Binghamton at a party in the town of Union in August. Casteline is expected to be sentenced to 20 years in prison with 5 years of post-release supervision after pleading to the lesser charge.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was notified Monday Night by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office of a stolen vehicle on I-81 heading for Broome County. A Broome County patrol located the vehicle on State Route 11 in the Town of Barker clocked at 125 Miles per Hour, deputies deployed tire deflating devices across the road, the vehicle ran over the device, failed to negotiate a curve & hit a house. The driver 19-year-old Franklin Chambers of Buffalo suffered facial injuries & a leg fracture, 3 occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. A bag near the scene was retrieved, with 2 handguns and counterfeit money. Deputies located 17-year-old Kiana Tucker nearby & she was taken into custody. Chambers was taken to Wilson Hospital & will be processed shortly on a number of felonies; Tucker was arraigned for several felonies & was remanded to the custody of the Erie County Youth Services Center. The investigation is ongoing.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a dirt bike and a parked van on Airport Road in the Town of Union Tuesday night. Patrols were dispatched to Airport Road following reports of people riding minibikes and off-road motorcycles, 1 patrol observed a male riding a dirt bike which struck a full-size van that was parked on the side of the roadway a short time later. Cameron Fortner was ejected off the dirt bike, a deputy found him unconscious and not breathing & she began CPR. The investigation revealed that John Hughes saw the dirt bike traveling on the street, he entered the roadway with a shovel to force the dirt bike to the side of the roadway, and Fortner swerved & struck the van. Fortner was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hughes was charged with 2nd degree Manslaughter, the investigation is continuing.
A Broome County Grand Jury has indicted 45 year-old Larry Harris of Johnson City on 2 charges of predatory sexual assault against a child and 2 counts of rape. Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak said that Harris was already being held in the Broome County Jail facing murder and manslaughter charges for the death of 11 year-old Jerome Smith in February of 2019. The new charges were filed after a victim came forward accusing Harris of sex crimes between 2013 and 2019, Harris will be tried separately on the new charges.
