The Sidney Veteran's Memorial Park fundraiser at East Main Lanes in Sidney the last 2 weekends was a big success, Park President Doug Barnard told WCDO how much they raised:

Barnard said that the money raised will go for routine maintenance, upgrades and added security cameras at the park, the annual fundraising Golf Tournament will be held next June, more details will be released about that in 2024. More information about the park is available at svmpa.org.

Residents and businesses in New York's Southern Tier and Central New York regions are one step closer to better broadband service after hundreds of local and state leaders met for the 2nd Annual Upstate Rural Broadband Conference, in Binghamton this week. The daylong conference met to identify funding opportunities to speed-up the deployment of high-speed networks in the Southern Tier and Central New York regions.

Nauman Hussain was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison following victim impact statements at the Schoharie County Court today, he was convicted on 20 counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, Hussain operated Prestige Limo, which owned the uninspected stretch limo that crashed in Schoharie where 20 people were killed in October 2018. Hussain's Attorney is expected to appeal.


The State DEC is warning New Yorkers of an increased Fire danger today, as much of the state has had little to no rain over the last 10 days & there will be higher temperatures over the next few days. There are currently 11 active wildfires in the state, all were started by human activity.


The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of a pedestrian-train accident near the Crocker Hill Rd area in the Town of Fenton Tuesday. The Sheriff’s Office stated that 17-year-old Jakob McCloe of Port Crane was walking westbound on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks near Crocker Hill Road, he was wearing noise-canceling headphones and was unable to hear the train approaching, the engineer attempted to signal multiple times to get McCloe’s attention, he was unable to stop the train, and at 8:53 am, McCloe was struck and killed and pronounced at the scene. McCloe was a student at the Chenango Valley School District.


The Chenango County Sheriff's Office reported that Shawn McMahon of Binghamton was the pilot & only occupant of a plane that crashed Sunday in Norwich. The National Transportation Safety Board said that the Cessna 182D plane crashed just before 3:00 PM Sunday about 1 mile west of the Eaton Airport, he had taken off from the airport and was attempting to return to the airport at the time of the crash. The investigation has been opened by the NTSB and the FAA.


The Norwich Fire Department responded Monday to a fire at Peacock Manor Apartments on Brown Street. Firefighters arrived at about 2:10 PM, where they encountered heavy smoke on the first floor. Firefighters located the fire, which was extinguished and under control within minutes. EMS crews evaluated 4 residents at the scene, with 2 taken to UHS Chenango Memorial ER for smoke inhalation, they were treated & released, No firefighters were injured.


The Chenango County Historical Society will host the museum’s annual Summer Barn Party from 6-8:30 p.m. on June 29 at 41 Rexford St., Norwich. This year’s theme is inspired by the newest Community Gallery exhibit, “Sixpence in Your Shoe: A Glimpse at Chenango County Wedding Traditions.” Proceeds support a significant portion of the organization’s annual operating budget. Bradley Law of Harpursville was arraigned Tuesday in Broome County Court for Leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and criminal possession of a firearm. Law is accused of running over 13 year old Brennan Loveless as he was riding a bicycle on January 1st on State Route 7 near his home on Belden Manor Road in Sanitaria Springs. Law allegedly fled the scene, Loveless was eventually taken to Syracuse Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law was apprehended the following day after he reported that his pickup truck had driven into a ditch along Bevier Street in an attempt to avoid striking a deer, investigators determined that Law's truck was the one that had struck and killed Loveless.


Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 41 year old Jason Dufton of Hancock, was sentenced to 7 years in state prison, and 15 years of post-release supervision for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Dufton engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a 10-year-old female child, in the Town of Hancock, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA databank, he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.


33 year old Ammar Ali of Albany was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in State prison after pleading guilty to felony Criminal Mischief in Broome County Court. Ali admitted that on July 19, 2022, in the Town of Union, he cut off an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet while on probation, he was previously convicted for Bail Jumping in 2015,

The Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 22 year old Houston Alexander of Binghamton following a high speed pursuit Thursday night. A Deputy was conducting a routine speed enforcement on I-81 in the Town of Dickinson when he encountered a vehicle traveling at 90 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone, after pursuits through several towns, Alexander's vehicle collided with a patrol vehicle, he fled on foot, which ended a few block later in Johnson City with a Taser deployment, and he was taken into custody. Alexander was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Government Administration & Resisting Arrest, Alexander was processed and issued appearance tickets for a future court date, The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Johnson City Police and State Police. There were no injuries stemming from the incident.

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta will be held May 26th to the 28th on area waterways and at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge, WCDO will be broadcasting throughout the event over the Memorial day Weekend.


SUNY Broome announced that just under 750 people graduated last night at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in downtown Binghamton. College Officials said that 65% of the graduates are female and 35% are male, the most popular major again this year was nursing.

The State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that the off-ramp from I-88 eastbound at Exit 2 in the Town of Fenton, will be closed from 8 pm. to 5 am. for 5 consecutive nights from Sunday, May 21 to Thursday, May 25. Drivers should follow the signed detour utilizing Exit 3 and State Route 7. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones.

Oneonta Fire Department last night responded to a fire at 7 Hubbell Avenue in Oneonta, they were assisted by West Oneonta, & Otego Fire Department As well as the FAST teams from Sidney, Franklin & Worcester. There were no injuries reported, but several pets died in the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Governor Hochul today announced the launch of Round 13 of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, which will include core capital grant and tax-credit funding combined with a wide range of programs from 10 State agencies, including $150 million in grant funds from Empire State Development. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded May 10th to the Town of Meredith to assist US Homeland Security Units with the apprehension of 48 year old Charles Bodie of Meredith, who was wanted on an active US Federal Court Warrant for the Sexual Exploitation of a Child. Deputies and Homeland Security conducted surveillance of property in Meredith where Bodie had been living, on May 11th, they arrested Bodie on the warrant, he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility, where he was to be held indefinitely. Bodie was scheduled to be transported to the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York at a later date for arraignment on the Sexual Exploitation of a Child charge, if found guilty, Bodie could face 15 to 30 years in prison.


The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that a stolen vehicle traffic stop in the Town of Kirkwood led to an arrest on multiple felony drug charges last week. On May 7th, a deputy identified a vehicle as stolen from Binghamton, after stopping the vehicle and confirming its status, Officers seized 11.3 grams of cocaine, a digital scale and $1,423 in cash, 38 year old Jorge Cortina of Binghamton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, he was processed and issued an appearance ticket to answer for his charges on June 7, 2023 in the Town of Kirkwood Court.

The federal public health emergency declaration for COVID-19 expired on May 11th, but COVID-19 remains a threat. Delaware County Public Health announced that a Skunk tested positive for rabies in the Village of Deposit. An unvaccinated dog and 1 person were exposed to the rabid skunk, the dog had to be euthanized because it had not been vaccinated. The individual exposed to the skunk is receiving post exposure prophylaxis. A Broome County judge on Friday has sentenced Jason Johnson of Nineveh to 60 years in jail for the attempted murder of Trooper Rebecca Seager in June 2021, Johnson was found guilty on a number of felony counts last year in Broome County Court for shooting Trooper Seager in the hip in the Town of Colesville, Johnson was taken into custody following a 21-hour manhunt.


The Chenango County Department of Public Works announced the closure of Church Hill Road in the town of North Norwich today. The road will be closed between Bryant Road and Ellison Road for the replacement of a bridge deck. Local traffic will be allowed, more information is available at 337-1710.

Former long time area Assemblyman Gary Finch passed away Friday at the age of 79. Finch retired from the Assembly in 2020 after serving for 10 terms in the Assembly, part of his district was in Chenango County.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that a proposed change to Medicare wage payments, could bring about $43 million for UHS hospitals locally. Schumer said that almost $4 million alone could go to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

All levels of the City of Oneonta municipal parking garage will be closed until further notice. Routine visual inspection has revealed some additional structural deterioration. City officials are taking precautionary measures until the entire garage can be reevaluated by the City’s structural engineering consultant. The Trailways bus terminal may remain open with no impact to regular operations. Parking restrictions will be lifted in the City’s Dietz Street Lot. There is additional public parking available in the Damaschke Field and Neahwa Park Large Pavilion parking lots & The City is working to establish a downtown shuttle bus to downtown.


Norwich Police arrested 36 year old Thomas Wright for criminal contempt, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, criminal possession of a controlled substance, burglary and grand larceny charges. Police received information Thursday that Wright was hiding in an apartment at 46 Henry Street, he was eventually taken into custody. Wright was turned over to the State Police.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Sallie Cherry of Texas following an investigation in the Town of Hartwick on February 19th. Cherry was charged with Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Certain Ammunition Feeding Devices, Cherry was released on an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Hartwick Town Court at a later date.


U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the Greater Binghamton Airport will receive $7 million for renovations of the passenger terminal and the associated vehicle approach, with upgrades to the passenger hold room, & the replacement of the airport’s outdated Air Conditioning equipment, & for the installation of 2 passenger-boarding bridges. The funding comes from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law. The Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse airports also received funding.


The Chenango Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and walk in portions of the Hospital recently celebrated their 1st Anniversary, Dr. Kenneth Herman is the Emergency Department Medical Director & he told WCDO News how the upgrades have been received:

Also, UHS Chenango Memorial was recently awarded a $20 Million state grant, to redesign primary and specialty care services over the next 5 years. Hospital officials said that they will be creating a new Infusion Center, dedicated Women’s Imaging Suite and Pre-Admission Testing Center as well as make other strategic investments in hospital-based services.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Hayes Cutting Jr of Bainbridge, for 2nd degree assault, Tampering with Physical Evidence, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and resisting arrest, following the investigation into the assault of Norwich Police Officer with a motor vehicle on Monday in Norwich, while attempting to take Cutting into custody on an active warrant. State Police responded to the Town of Oneonta after a tip that Cutting was there, Cutting was found hiding in the ceiling of a building, he was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on a State Parole Warrant and will appear in the Town of Norwich Court for the new charges. The passenger in Cutting's vehicle, Jesse Dann, had an unrelated warrant out for his arrest and was taken into custody.


The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force, and local Police agencies, arrested 32 year old Cody Dickson of the Town of Maine man on 17 charges. The Task Force executed a search warrant at 383 Kolb Road, they seized over $10,000 in methamphetamine, plus weapons, high capacity magazines and ammunition. Dickson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, plus Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Dickson faces court action shortly.


Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchack announced that 26-year-old Kout Akol of Binghamton was sentenced for Manslaughter, Criminal Possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child, in Broome County Court, for the fatal stabbing of 27-year-old Takecia Mitchell in Binghamton, Akol was sentenced to 25 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of post-release Supervision.


Walton Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a structure fire at 3664 East Brook Road. Firefighters found that the garage was fully engulfed, and had spread to a nearby house mutual aid was requested from Delhi, Franklin, and Treadwell firefighters, The occupants escaped, 1 cat died from the blaze. Walton Firefighters returned Monday morning to extinguish hot spots. The house and garage were a total loss. A pellet stove is believed to have started the fire, which has been ruled as accidental.
