Governor Cuomo announced that in honor of Veterans day today, he signed legislation to ensure that the flags lowered to half-staff at the State Capitol in honor of a fallen soldier are presented to the loved ones of the deceased. The Governor also signed a new law to designate State Route 23 in the Town of Davenport as the ”Davenport Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Highway, to memorialize the recently deceased members of the VFW Post #487 who served in Korea and World War 2. Another new law will designate a portion of State Route 97 in the Town of Hancock as the “Hancock Veterans Memorial Highway” as that Town lost 2 service men in the Iraq War, as well as in previous wars and conflicts.
State Police in Sidney arrested 46-year-old MARK CRAWFORD of Guilford for Criminal Sexual Act, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrests were made following an investigation conducted by the State Police and Chenango County Child Protective Services into allegations that Crawford was having sexual contact with a person less than 11 years old. Crawford was arraigned in the Town of Guilford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $20,000 bail. The Investigation is continuing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the New York State Police at 561-7400.
State police at Oneonta arrested 50-year-old Michael Hinckley of Treadwell for aggravated DWI with a reportable BAC result of .19%. The arrest resulted from a vehicle stop for using a cell phone on Main Street in Oneonta; Hinckley was released with tickets returnable to the Oneonta city court on November 20th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Environmental Conservation Police arrested 34-year-old David Button Jr. of Plymouth Saturday, after he was witnessed on a trail camera trespassing and possessing a rifle, on posted property on Bates Wilson Road. Button shot a deer with the rifle, removed the head, and left the body, he was located at his residence where the rifle and deer head were recovered, Button is a convicted felon and was not allowed to possess firearms. Button was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Trespassing, Hunting without a License, Hunting Deer with Rimfire Ammunition, and Unlawfully Killing Protected Wildlife.
The Greater Binghamton Airport and NYSERDA today announced that the airport is moving forward with an energy-saving improvement process on the strength of $350,000 award by NYSERDA through Governor Cuomo's Regional Council Initiative. Binghamton is the first airport in the country to use a geothermal system to heat an aircraft-parking ramp, which is expected to result in the avoidance of 103 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. Smith was taken into custody and processed and released on appearance tickets for a later court date.
The Out of the Woodwork players are presenting the classic play “Our Town” from Thornton Wilder, this weekend at the Bainbridge town hall theater. The play was almost cancelled until a last minute addition to play an important character, according to cast member Howard Hannum:

Money raised by the Foundation has been used to renovate the facility and upgrade equipment. Danyluk is accused of stealing an LED Signal Light off a MRP Paving dump truck by cutting the wires back on October 18th in the Town of Norwich, with his 2-year-old daughter present. Danyluk was issued an appearance ticket for Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Youngs was charged following a complaint in the Town of Plymouth, he had previously advised by Deputies to leave the victim alone following an earlier incident. Youngs will appear in the Town of Plymouth Court at a later date.
Commerce Chenango, The Chenango Foundation, Inc. and the Advisory Committee of Leadership Chenango announced that Robert Wadsworth is the 2013 recipient of the Harry Tecklenburg Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the Kick-off Dinner for the Leadership Chenango Class of 2014 tonight at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich. Wadsworth served as Chairman and CEO of Preferred Mutual Insurance Company in New Berlin, from 1997 until his retirement in 2008.

State Troopers in Sidney arrested 52 year old Mark Meyers of Guilford, for fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, felony driving while intoxicated with a BAC of .15%, plus numerous vehicle and traffic law charges. The arrest followed a traffic stop on State Route 8 that concluded on High Bridge Road in Guilford. Meyers was arraigned in the town of Guilford court and remanded to the Chenango county jail on $8,000 bail.
The Sidney American Legion Post# 183 is sponsoring a tribute & fundraiser for the Sidney Fire Department, on Saturday September 28th, at 2:00 PM. Legion spokesman Larry Halbert explains.

State Police arrested 33-year-old Eleanor Black of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for 20 felonies. Black was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny, 7 counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, 6 counts of Falsifying Business Records, and 6 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing. The charges followed a yearlong investigation of crimes in the Schoharie Valley Region. Black was arraigned and will return to Town of Esperance Court at a later date.
The Binghamton Mets Released their 2014 Schedule. The B-Mets set a team record with 86 victories in 2013, sending them into the eastern league playoffs for the first time in 7 seasons. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly will work together to ensure that funding will continue for newborns to be tested for over 40 fatal diseases. The Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2013 assures federal funding so newborns can receive a blood test for fatal diseases that, if caught early, can be diagnosed and treated early. If the bill is not reauthorized by Sept. 30 the federal funding for newborn screenings could end. Kelly’s son Hunter died in 2005 from a fatal genetic disease that, if caught early, can be treated.
The Emerald Ash Borer is spreading more quickly than expected, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension in Chenango County. The Emerald Ash Borer will only affect Ash trees, which make up about 10 percent of trees in the region. Officials say the only way to protect the trees is to inject the tree with insecticide. Any trees without the insecticide will begin to weaken and die over the next decade. More information is available at emeraldashborer.info

Guest speakers talked about the availability of funding so businesses can expand their businesses and commercialize products. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a 2-car property damage motor vehicle accident at the intersection of River Road and Interstate 88 access road in the Town of Sidney. A vehicle operated by 64 year old Michael Sisson of Oneonta, was making a left turn off River Road and pulled into the path of a vehicle operated by 59 year old Mark Hopper of Wells Bridge. Sisson was issued a traffic ticket for fail to yield right of way.

A panel of arbitrators threw out the tobacco industry’s $800 million claim against New York and ordered the companies to pay New York State more than $92 million that they had wrongfully withheld from their 2003 annual payment due under the 1998 tobacco canadameds.com Master Settlement Agreement. The judges rejected tobacco’s demand for a dramatic reduction in its annual payment to New York, finding the State had fully complied with its agreement obligations and was entitled to its entire payment. The decision is expected to protect the State from billions of dollars in future claims.

The Joint Landowners coalition of Central New York announced they will hold an event to mark the five-year anniversary of the moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing in NY. FEMA announced that federal disaster aid has been made available to New York to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area affected by severe storms and flooding on June 28th to July 4th. The President's action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding in several counties, including Chenango, Delaware, & Otsego counties.
Police in Chenango County reported that 33-year-old Jeremy Edmonds of Milford New Jersey was killed in an ATV accident Saturday night on Brown Road in the town of Sherburne. Police reports said that 25 year old Mark Brong of High Bridge New Jersey lost control of the ATV, both Brong & Edmonds were ejected, Brong was in critical condition in a Utica area hospital, Edmonds as pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

The arrests resulted from a vehicle stop in Sidney; both subjects were issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Sidney Court on June 27th.
Voters in Sidney Center voted in favor of bonding for a new fire station, by a vote of 80 to 1. The next step for the project is to finalize the plans and put them out for bid with the anticipation of breaking ground in mid summer. The anticipated cost of the station is $550,000, the bonding of $300,000 over 15 years at 3% interest will give the district an average yearly payment of $25,000. The bond would not raise the fire tax by no more than the 2% state tax cap.

The arrest resulted from a traffic stop initiated on Interstate 81 and ending on Foley Road in Kirkwood, where Webber fled into the woods. Webber was apprehended and taken into custody; he was arraigned in the Town of Kirkwood Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail.

One person is killed every half hour on average nationwide due to drunk driving, state police are also looking to get 100% compliance on seat belt usage, research indicates that the chance of serious injuries or fatalities climb extremely high if seat belts are not used by occupants in a crash.
Chenango county sheriff’s deputies & the Greene Police Department arrested 23-year-old Corey Nelson of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Nelson was a Fugitive from Justice out of the State of Pennsylvania, with an arrest warrant issued by the Muhlenberg Township Police Department for Theft by Deception-False Impression. Nelson was arraigned in Chenango County Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional facility pending extradition back to Pennsylvania.
Delaware County Deputies investigated a 2-car accident on County Route 10 in East Meredith. 32-year-old Michael Tarzia of Delhi was traveling east when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 24 year old Kayla Constable of Delhi. Constable was charged with DWI & leaving the scene of a property damage auto accident, she was released and is ordered to appear at a later date in the Town of Meredith Court
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in the Town of New Berlin leading to the arrest of 47-year-old Valeria Goude for Cruelty to animals. A search warrant was executed with the assistance of Compassionate Care Veterinarians; they located dead and malnourished animals on the property. Valeria Goude was arrested and released, the investigation is ongoing.

He was arraigned in Harpersfield Town Court and released to reappear at a later date. A temporary order of protection was issued for the victims.
