The Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center is hosting its annual Animals of Halloween on Saturday, from 3-6 PM. The free, event features animal actors on the Rogers Center trails, performing skits which pay tribute to New York wildlife. Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that 22 year old Nalya Jimenez of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Monday for arraignment on a 4 count indictment for Welfare Fraud, Offering a False Instrument. Jimenez was indicted after evidence was presented to the Delaware County Grand Jury, she is accused of providing false information while applying for the SNAP benefits & concealing recurring income from several sources, she is accused of receiving about $5,600 in public benefits that she was not entitled to, she faces court action at a later date.

State Police and local law enforcement will be out in force through Halloween in order to crack down on impaired and reckless driving. The enforcement period begins today and runs through Tuesday, October 31st, the annual effort is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
The Heavy Metal Haul Out for the Delaware Valley Humane Society & conducted by Waste Recovery Enterprises, brought in a substantial amount of money for the Shelter, directer Erin Insinga told WCDO news how much was raised:

It was determined that the student was suffering from a mental health crisis and did have a firearm in his possession while at school. The student did not make any direct threats or display a weapon at any time. The juvenile was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds and appeared before a judge in Otsego County Supreme Court - Youth Part. Investigators applied for an Extreme Risk Protection Order and the juvenile was transported for a mental health evaluation.

Troopers located the work truck belonging to Barney and Sons Well Drilling in Laurens. It was located unoccupied on a dirt road in the town of Sidney. The investigation is on-going. Anyone who knows the person that took the truck or saw someone operating the truck either late at night on October 24 or in the early morning of October 25 is asked to call New York State Police at (607)561-7400.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 31 year-old James Lynch will spend 3 ½ to 3 years in prison after pleading guilty to 3rd degree attempted robbery, in Broome County Court. Lynch forcibly stole cash from a cab driver in Binghamton in January 28, The driver reported the robbery to Binghamton Police, who located Lynch & arrested him.

Delaware County Sheriff's Department and State DOT Inspectors conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester. 3 Inspections were conducted; Deputies issued 17 summonses for various safety violations including unsafe tires, uninspected motor vehicle, unregistered vehicle, loose cargo, spreading debris on the highway, & inadequate brakes. 2 of the vehicles were taken out of service, 1 driver was arrested for a displaying a forged commercial motor vehicle inspection certificate and issued multiple summons returnable to the Town of Colchester Court.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division arrested 46 year old Michael Lynch of Sidney following the execution of a search warrant at his County Highway 23, Town of Sidney, and residence. Members of the Criminal Investigation Division, acting on a tip, obtained a search warrant for Lynch's residence, they seized marijuana plants, drying marijuana and a number of rifles and shotguns, Lynch was charged with criminal possession of marijuana & unlawful cultivation of cannabis, he was issued an appearance ticket for Town of Sidney Court at a later date.
The Regional Economic Development Council awards will include $690,000 for the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, located on the site of the original 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair held 50 years ago. Bethel Woods will use the state funding for the 50th anniversary event for next year, which is planned as a 3-day festival like the original event.
The Governor’s Administration and Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig announced an October 11 roundtable event in Oneonta to discuss the upcoming 2020 Census and steps to ensure a full count of all New Yorkers. The discussion will be led by Mayor Herzig and Richard Tobe, Governor Cuomo’s Director of Special Intergovernmental Projects, it is open to the public and will take place Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center on Market Street and more information is available at ny.gov/programs/2020-census.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Friday to a report of a 1-car motor vehicle accident on Richardson Hill Road in the Town of Masonville. Deputies found the driver, 20 year old Holden Smith of Sidney Center lying on the shoulder of the roadway with an apparent broken leg. Smith’s car was found over the embankment at that location and was found to have impacted a tree head on. Further investigation revealed that Smith was driving to Sidney Center from the Ithaca area at the time of the accident, and that Smith had consumed prescription medications prior to the accident. Smith was later transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment of the injuries sustained from the collision.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 34 year old Patricia Ware of Sharon Springs for Petty Larceny; she is accused of taking various items from a home that she is a caretaker for in the Town of Franklin. Ware was arraigned at the Town of Hamden Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $3000 cash bail or $6000 bond. She was scheduled to appear before the Town of Franklin Court at a later date.
State Police arrested 24 year old James Joyce of Colesville for Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle & Reckless Endangerment, plus more than a dozen traffic tickets after he attempted to elude troopers while on an ATV. A trooper on State Route 7 in Unadilla observed Joyce on an ATV as he passed an ambulance with its emergency lights activated and over a double solid yellow line. Joyce fled from the trooper, nearly striking a pedestrian. The pursuit was terminated In Bainbridge when Joyce drove onto railroad tracks & he tipped over. Joyce was arraigned in the town of Bainbridge Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond, pending court action on July 24, 2018.
State Police arrested 33 year old Ashlie Keesler of Downsville for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with Child Under 15 or Under as Passenger, & Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test. A trooper on patrol observed Keesler and two children walking on State Highway 30 in Colchester, an investigation revealed that Keesler had been involved in an accident and her vehicle went over an embankment. Keesler and the children were transported to Delaware Valley Hospital. Keesler was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the Colchester Town Court on August 7th.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded a fatal, 2 vehicle head on collision on State Highway 10 in the Town of Delhi Thursday morning at about 9:40 AM. 77-year-old Carol Lowell of Delhi crossed the center line & collided head-on with a dump truck, driven by 62 year old Paul Jurjens of Walton, which overturned in a ditch. Jurjens was escaped from the truck before it became engulfed in flames. Lowell was pronounced dead at the scene, Jurjens was taken to O'Connor Hospital where he was treated & released. State Highway 10 was shut down for several hours for accident reconstruction work & clean up, the investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing but at this time Deputies do not anticipate any charges will be filed.

Delaware County Sheriffs department arrested 37-year-old Yurian Perez and 31-year-old Yuniel Brito, both from New Jersey, for Criminal Possession of Marijuana, Unlawful Cultivation of Marijuana, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The charges are the result of a month long investigation into alleged marijuana growing operation at 9179 County Highway 21 in the Town of Franklin. The execution of a Search Warrant resulted in the seizure of lighting, ventilation and irrigation equipment, 328 plants, a crossbow, a metal knuckle knife& a vehicle. Both were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond. The investigation continues, and more charges against additional suspects are likely.
Fire Investigators have determined the fire that destroyed the Cooperstown Motel on Tuesday, August 9th was arson. Investigations by the state Office of Fire Prevention & Control, county Office Of Emergency Services, state Department of Financial Services and the Cooperstown Police Department determined that the fire began on the second floor of the abandoned motel. No further details are available at this time. Anyone with information about the person(s) responsible for starting the fire is asked to call the Cooperstown Police Department, at 547- 2500. All calls are confidential.
Disgraced & convicted former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will not be heading to Federal Jail august 31st, after a judge ruled that he can remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction of corruption charges. Federal Judge Valerie Caproni, granted Silver’s request for bail, even though she presided over Silver's original trial, and stated that she believes that Silver is guilty of using his political power to increase his net worth, even as the definition for his crimes has changed in a recent US Supreme court ruling.

Governor Cuomo today announced 30 Smart Schools Investment Plans totaling $39 million have been approved as part of the $2 billion Smart Schools Bond Act. The Act supports investments in education technology that will equip students with the skills they need to thrive and succeed in the global economy. Locally, the Oxford Academy will receive about $1 Million Dollars for High Tech Security & School connectivity project.
The State DEC seized more than 1,100 pounds of undersized lobsters from Price Chopper in 3 different inspections over the last 4 months. The case was sparked in March when short lobsters were found at 2 Price Chopper stores in Binghamton. The distribution center for Price Chopper in Schenectady, & a routine inspection Tuesday, determined that 820 lobsters, or 15% of the inventory, were under the legal size limit. Price Chopper faces fines of up to $100 for every shellfish involved.
Norfolk Southern Railroad officials as well as Sidney Village DPW, expect the Main street railroad crossing in Sidney to be open later tonight. This after noon, the last coat of asphalt is being put down.
State Senator Jim Seward announced that $65,000 in grant funds he secured will go to local domestic violence programs. The funding was set aside in the 2016-2017 state budget, with $15,000 going to Opportunities for Otsego & $5,000 for Delaware Opportunities.

A man injured in the July 13th house explosion & fire in Masonville, has died from the injuries sustained in that explosion. 31 year old Shayne Charles died Saturday at Upstate medical center's burn unit, calling hours will be held at C.H. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic dispute in Andes Monday. 21 year old Joel Maldonado of Lydenhurst, New Jersey & 21 year old Preston Reed of Andes fell through a plate glass window during the altercation, Maldonado sustained a head laceration, he was taken to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi, where he was treated and released. Deputies determined that 2 small children were in close proximity to the altercation, Maldonado was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1,000 dollars cash bail, Reed was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
On Monday, July 25, 2016 Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28-year-old John Mahler on a Parole Warrant issued by the State Division of Parole. Mahler was convicted in 2013 of committing burglaries in the Village of Walton; he was paroled in March, & was subject to Post Release Supervision until March 2019. A 2nd Sidney Rotary Club Grant has been awarded for local efforts in combating the Heroin crisis locally. The Recovery Coach Training Grant will allow for up to 25 people to be trained to assist those recovering from addiction, according to spokesperson Lorraine Keckeisen:

Governor Cuomo announced the arrests of 5 people for illegally selling synthetic marijuana at stores in Syracuse and Binghamton. State Police seized more than 100 packets of suspected synthetic marijuana, the State Health Commissioner is issuing orders to immediately close the establishments found to be selling these illegal substances. In Binghamton Troopers arrested 62-year old Vijaykumar Hathi and 64-year old Deepa Hathi, owners of Friend’s Grocery at 46 Court Street in Binghamton. Both were charged with sale of synthetic drugs, & possessing of synthetic Marijuana.
FEMA released updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Otsego County for public comment. The maps and the associated Flood Insurance Study report will serve as the basis for floodplain management measures, flood insurance rates, and insurance purchase requirements& will help property owners make decisions about how to protect homes against future flood risk. State Police announced a "Missing Vulnerable Adult Alert" in the Southern Tier, for 78-year-old William Caloroso of Nichols, who is missing since Sunday. Caloroso is described as a white Male, 5’10", about 160 pounds with Brown Hair & eyes, he suffers from Alzheimer's disease and may be in need of medical attention. He was last seen on River Road in Nichols, at 8:30 PM last night, driving a 2010 dark blue Chevrolet Impala with New York license plate GDY-8262. He was wearing a flannel shirt, blue pants, and may be wearing a baseball hat that says Sidney on top. Anyone with information is asked to call State police at 561-7400 or at 911.

Hancock Fire and EMS responded to a report of flash flooding in the area of 5256 County Highway 28 Town of Hancock Saturday Night. A wedding with 130 people was in danger and subjects were advised to seek higher ground. The road covered in 1 to 1 ½ feet of rapidly moving water and impassible, swift water rescue resources by the Delaware County Emergency Services and the Deposit, Walton, and Sidney Swift Water Rescue Teams and boats, State Police responded. The water started to drop allowing responding personnel to gain access to the area of the wedding party. All 130 plus individuals were accounted for and safe on higher ground, they were assisted onto awaiting coach buses that had been provided for the wedding and driven to a safe location. Delaware County DPW cleared and reopened County Highway 28 shortly after. The bridge and lower part of Shea Road however were determined to be unsafe with extensive washouts noted. This area was closed off to travel.
Delaware County DPW will began oil & stone operations in the northern sections of the county today. Work will begin on County Route 9 & will continue on county routes 29, 30, 33, 12 & 10, work will then move south to routes 4, 27, 47, 20 & 67. The project is expected to take about 3 weeks to complete.

State Senator Jim Seward disclosed that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer earlier this year at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. Seward successfully underwent surgery on Wednesday at Albany Medical Center, the cancer was found in its earliest stages, is completely curable, and a complete recovery in anticipated. Seward will miss some senate activities, but is expected to be back up to full speed in a matter of weeks; his staff will keep full office hours & assist constituents as needed.

State Police CNET team arrested 32 year old Brian Russell of Johnson City, 24 year old Jacob Parr of Johnson city and 32 year old Dane Ellis of Chenango Bridge, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, & Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, Russell & Parr were stopped in Town of Chenango, a search of the vehicle lead to the discovery of a mobile meth laboratory, ELLIS was also stopped in another vehicle where police located components used to manufacture meth. All 3 were arraigned and were remanded to the Broome County jail without bail.

The Binghamton Zoo announced the birth of a male Red Panda, “Zhin-Li “, the first of its species to be born at the zoo. The cub was born on June 18th & thriving. There are 175 red pandas located in zoos throughout the United States and Canada, Zhin-Li may not be viewable for several months, as he is with his mother in a nesting box.
