The Norwich Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 102 Gilmore Lane just south of the Walmart Saturday Night at about 6:12 PM, Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino explains:

Norwich Firefighters were assisted by the Oxford, North Norwich and Sherburne Fire Departments, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services, NYSEG, Norwich Water Department, Chenango County Sheriff's Office.


The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joshua Sandell of New Lisbon following an investigation of a domestic dispute in the Town of New Lisbon. Sandell allegedly engaged in a physical domestic dispute while there were children present in the residence, he was held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment for Harassment & Endangering the Welfare of a minor.


The Delaware Valley Humane Society reminds area residents that there are 3 days left to make a donation to DVHS that will be matched by several area businesses through the Shelter Saviors program. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 182, Sidney NY 13838, the check must be dated by 12/31/25 for it to count. Links to other sites to donate with can be found at DVHumane.org. For ever dollar donate, the Shelter Saviors businesses will match it through December 31st.


The City of Oneonta announced that The Department of Public Works will be collecting Christmas trees beginning Monday, January 5th through the end of January 2026. Decorations, tinsel & electrical wires & bulbs should be removed.

Governor Hochul signed legislation that will require social media platforms to display labels warning of the dangerous impact certain features can have on young users’ mental health. The Legislation requires social media platforms that offer addictive feeds, auto play or infinite scroll to post warning labels on their platforms. Recent studies show that adolescents who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression, About half claim that social media makes them feel worse about their bodies, and teenagers with the highest levels of social media use are nearly twice as likely to rate their overall mental health as poor or very poor.


The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Arthur Proctor of Richfield Springs for Sexual Abuse, Forcible Touching & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of sexual abuse at a residence in the Town of Richfield over the summer of 2025. Proctor is accused of y subjecting a juvenile victim to unwanted sexual contact, Proctor was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment. An order of protection was requested on behalf of the victim.


The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Mark Cassaday of Oneonta, for Promoting Prison Contraband & Criminal Mischief at the Otsego County Jail. Sheriff investigators were notified by Correctional Facility staff that an inmate had intentionally damaged an outlet cover and used the broken pieces to fashion makeshift weapons. Cassady was processed before being returned to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

The Norwich Fire Department responded last night at about 9:40 to a commercial structure fire at 4450 State Highway 23 at Norwich Meadow Farms in the town of Norwich. Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino told WCDO News what they encountered and what caused the fire:

Several area fire departments responded to the report of a structure fire at Bordinger's Welding & Fabricating at 336 Winney Hill Road. The fire was reported at about 12:15 this afternoon, and people were able to escape the blaze. WCDO will have more information as it becomes available.


State Police & local Law Enforcement agencies responded today to a host of accidents related to the slippery roads in all of the local counties. Police agencies are reminding motorists to drive slowly now that wintry conditions have returned to the region.


The Hartwick College Board of Trustees announced that Laurel Bongiorno, will be the College's 13th president, she talked about the opportunity:

The Otsego County Sheriff’s announces the arrest of 31 year old Marcus Borggreen & 26 year old Destiny Grant both of Mt. Upton, following a trespass complaint in the Town of Westford. Deputies were dispatched to a residence for a report of 2 subjects, they were located inside the basement of the residence, and were detained and were in possession of MDMA, narcotic drugs, and several weapons. the pair are facing numerous drug & weapons charges & were transported to the Sheriff’s Office and were turned over to the Jail to be held for Arraignment.


Governor Hochul announced that the last statewide Free Fishing Day of 2025 will be today, to mark Veterans Day. During Free Fishing Days, New York State waives the fishing license requirement for freshwater fishing in New York’s waters. While no license is required, all other freshwater fishing regulations remain in effect.

State Police are continuing the investigation into a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville Campus Monday, where a 20 year old man who was not a student was shot in the neck. The victim was taken to a Syracuse area Hospital, no arrests have been made, The preliminary investigation into the shooting has determined that this was an isolated dispute between people who were familiar with each other. The investigation remains active, and State Police are working closely with our state and local law enforcement partners.


North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik announced on Social Media today that she will seek the Republican Party Nomination to run for Governor of New York, next year. Stefanik is expected to take on Current Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, if she gets her party nomination, she faces a challenge from Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado.


State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail in Otsego County, 1 business was found to be not in compliance, an employee of Rudy’s Liquor Store in Cooperstown was issued an appearance ticket for Prohibited Sale of Alcohol to a Person Under 21. 9 other Otsego County Businesses complied, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plain clothes and 1 or more underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth (if asked).

State Police arrested 20 year old Ashton Pratt and 30 year old Amy Mills both of Glen Aubrey, for 1st & 2nd Degree Assault, NY, on Tuesday, Troopers responded to a stabbing on State Route 26 in the town of Nanticoke, where a road rage incident between 2 vehicles escalated into a violent altercation, resulting in a 40-year-old male victim being stabbed. The victim reported that a male and female exited their vehicle, Mills is accused of grabbing the victim by his sweatshirt, while Pratt is accused of stabbing the victim in the upper body, they fled the area, The victim was transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment; his injuries are not considered life-threatening. Through a collaborative effort among multiple State Police units, both suspects were located on Wednesday and were taken into custody without incident. Pratt and Mills were processed and transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment, The investigation is ongoing.

US Senators Schumer & Gillibrand called on the Trump administration today to allow the SNAP program money to be released to needy Americans, including 3 million New Yorkers, Gillibrand commented this morning about SNAP & the Affordable Care Act tax incentives being taken away:

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 temporarily expanded and enhanced the Premium Tax Credit, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 extended these enhancements through the end of 2025, Congress must act on that quickly in order for the Tax Credit to be available in 20-26.


Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $135 million was made available to help communities across the State affordably undertake critical water and sewer infrastructure improvement projects. Locally, the City of Oneonta will receive $5.3 million in federal grant and low-cost financing for improvements at the wastewater treatment plant.

40 year old Joseph Brady of Binghamton was convicted in Broome County Court of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he entered his plea of guilty Wednesday in Broome County Court in exchange for an 8 year sentence in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Brady was arrested on June 9, by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit following an investigation, Sentencing is scheduled for January 29, 2026, in Broome County Court.

State Forest Rangers responded to Hancock Sunday following the report of 2 hikers from Brooklyn who were lost off trail at Jensen’s Ledges. Forest Rangers spoke with the lost individuals by phone and were able to obtain their coordinates. Rangers found the hikers in about 2 hours Sunday evening and assisted them back to their vehicle. Officials remind hikers that before entering the backcountry, visit the DEC's Hike Smart NY, Adirondack Backcountry Information, and Catskill Backcountry Information webpages for more information. Hikers should also put the Forest Rangers hotline in their phone, the number is 833-NYS-RANGERS, 911 can also be used, more information is available at dec.ny.gov.


Students with a total family income up to $175,000 will be able to attend Colgate University tuition-free, and those with family incomes of up to $200,000 will have their demonstrated aid need met without loans starting in the fall of 2026, as part of the expansion of the Colgate Commitment, program to increase access and affordability, first launched in 2020. 39-year-old Brent Fallon of Binghamton is in Critical Condition after he was badly burned at a NYSEG substation in Binghamton recently. Fallon sustained 2nd and 3rd-degree burns over much of his body, he was taken to Wilson Hospital & was later transferred to the burn unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.


The Matthews Auto Group raised $153,561 at the 7th Annual Matthews Walk-A-Thon to benefit 13 kids’ charities in New York & Pennsylvania. Chenango County Child Advocacy Center in Norwich receives $14,679 from the efforts of the Norwich area Walk-A-Thon, Matthews Auto donated $10 per mile for every mile walked by registered participants, to the charity or charities of the walker’s choosing, $593,739 has been raised by the Matthews Walk-a-thon since the event’s inception 7 years ago.


The State DEC reminds area residents that the burn ban is in effect at least through Wednesday & it will be re-assessed at that time. Most of the state is under a drought watch or drought advisory due to the lingering dry conditions.

NYSEG reported power outages in the towns of Colchester & Hancock this afternoon. Over 550 customers were without power, NYSEG announced that almost all of the power has been restored.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kathrine McFadden of Texas following the investigation of a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Maryland. McFadden was located at the accident scene and found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated, she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI .18% or More of Alcohol, Failure to Keep Right, Moved From Lane Unsafely, among several other charges, she was processed and released with an Appearance Ticket and for Town of Maryland Court at a later date.


State Police are urging residents to take a simple precautions to prevent vehicle related thefts. Troopers have responded to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, Most recently, in West Oneonta sometime between the hours of 9:00 pm. on October 9 to 7:30 am. on October 10. Vehicles were rummaged through, a wallet was stolen and Police remind residents to Always lock your car, Never leave valuables in plain sight, Do not leave keys or key fobs in your vehicle, Install cameras or flood lights at your residence & Report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1.


The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate, 38 year old Chelsey Davis of Port Dickinson, who was remanded to the jail by the Town of Chenango Court last week. Davis received a full medical and substance abuse screening, She was then housed in the Medical Unit & was later seen by medical staff for a 2nd time, medical staff were called back to her housing unit for a third examination. Staff reported finding Davis responsive and not exhibiting any issues, 20 minutes later, she experienced a medical emergency, staff administered CPR and used a defibrillator, but were unable to revive her. An autopsy was conducted and full results have not yet been received.

Area Fire Departments responded to a blaze at the Hodge Family Farm in Oxford Sunday, the barn & indoor riding arena was destroyed, the family did get some animals out of the barn, 4 calves died in the blaze, various farm equipment was also lost. No injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.


4 of 8 accused former corrections officers at the Marcy Correctional Facility pleaded guilty in Oneida County Court Monday morning, in connection to the death of inmate Robert Brooks last December. Nicholas Anzalone, Anthony Farina pleaded guilty to 1st degree manslaughter & they face a sentence of 22 years in prison, David Walters faced a charge of 2nd degree manslaughter and faces 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison, Michael Mashaw pleaded guilty to manslaughter and faces 3 to 9 years in State prison. $ others have decided to go to trial.

State Police in Troop “C” are hosting a free child car safety checks today, performed by Troopers that are certified technicians, they make sure the child car seat is installed properly and make sure the child is in the right seat. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Wayne Viera of Sherburne on Friday following the execution of a sealed indictment arrest warrant. Viera was charged with 2 counts of 1st degree Rape, 1 count of 2nd degree Rape, 2 counts of sexual abuse, Viera is a registered sex offender, who is accused of raping a juvenile female victim. Viera was arraigned in Chenango County Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $85,000 cash bail, $500,000 bond, This investigation remains ongoing.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Mark Cassaday of Oneonta, for Burglary, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of Burglar’s Tools, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Grand Larceny, he is accused of for stealing over $1,000 worth of items from the Home Depot, and for a residential burglary in the Town of Oneonta where he forced entry into a private bedroom & stole property, he was processed & was turned over to Otsego County Corrections to be held for arraignment.


The Otsego County Sheriff's Office has arrested an 18-year-old Sheldon Romain of Edmeston in connection with an animal cruelty investigation. Romain was charged with 2 counts of torturing, injuring, or failing to provide sustenance to animals, after 13 emaciated dogs were found in a home last Month, The Susquehanna SPCA has taken in the dogs, previously, the Sheriff's Office also charged 41-year-old Kristin Natterer and 42-year-old Christopher Romain in relation to the case.


State Police announced the introduction of the Autism Awareness – Visor Card Program, where drivers with autism can place a card on their visor that Troopers can use to assist with communication and reduce confusion or fear during interactions. Each patrol vehicle will be equipped with a card for use as needed. Members of the public will be able to download and print the card directly from the New York State Police public website, the Program will be rolled out statewide in the coming weeks, more information is available at troopers.ny.gov.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond announced that in observance of New York State Sheriff's Week, the Delaware County Sheriff's Office will be hosting an Open House event on Sunday, September 21st, 2025, from 12pm-3pm at their office located at 280 Phoebe Lane, Delhi. Live demonstrations will be conducted by the K-9 Teams, Drone Pilots, Project Lifesaver Team, and our Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstructionist, plus Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from Delaware County Public Health will conduct a Car Seat Safety event.


The 10th Annual Autumn Market by 607 Events Connection (https://www.facebook.com/groups/6zero7eventshare/) will be held at General Clinton Park Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Over 70 vendors are participating including farmers, crafters, Artist, there will also be children's activities

40 year old Mark Archer of Sidney pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court Thursday. Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.


Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 18-year-old Kayden Wilcox of East Meredith, in June, Deputies received a complaint that a male subject was in possession of child pornography, Investigators responded to a residence in the Town of Kortright to seize electronic evidence. Wilcox was in possession of obscene sexual material of a child, the Sheriff’s Office arrested Wilcox on 1 count of Possessing an Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, he was released on an appearance ticket and directed to return to the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.


Mohawk Valley Gives, an annual one-day on-line fundraiser, returns today, it is hosted locally by the Community Foundation of Otsego County, where more than 80 participating Otsego County nonprofits will have the opportunity to raise funds with a secure online platform. Norwich Police arrested 27 year old Caleb Alexander of Columbus Ohio for Criminal Impersonation following an investigation into an adult who was using foul language and disrespecting staff at the Norwich YMCA. Alexander was using a number of incorrect identifications, detectives learned that Alexander later went to Norwich High School, where he allegedly used a false name, date of birth, and address in an attempt to enroll and gain access to the school. Detectives located Alexander a short time later, and he was taken into custody without incident. Alexander was wanted on a parole/probation warrant from Ohio for robbery and impersonating a police officer. Ohio authorities have confirmed that they intend to extradite Alexander to face those charges. Norwich Police stated that no children were harmed, and the suspect never made it beyond the high school office. Alexander is currently being held pending an extradition hearing in Chenango County Court.
