The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.
37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.
The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire at 10 Luther Street Sunday morning at about 9:00 Am. all occupants escaped without injuries, there were no injuries to firefighters, the cause of the fire is under investigation, the structure was a total loss.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Samuel Layton of New Lisbon, for 3 counts of Reckless Endangerment, following an investigation into a shots fired complaint in the Town of Exeter. Layton is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in the direction of an occupied residence with a family of 3 inside, resulting in a rifle round impacting through the residence, he was located, arrested, processed, and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Centralized Arraignment
State Police arrested 62 year old Dawn Hawley of Delancey for Stalking, after a victim located a tracking device in their vehicle. The victim believed that Hawley had placed the tracker in December 2025 but was unable to find it until last week, Hawley was processed and was issued an appearance ticket to the Hamden Town Court on July 22, 2026.

The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place. Construction began on June 29, and work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting. The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is providing consumers with tips to protect their money and financial information while using payment apps, after it was reported that last year, consumers nationwide reported over $390 million in losses to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission from App scams, which was about $100 million dollars more than the previous year. If you believe you made a payment to a scammer or find unauthorized payments on your account, report it to the mobile payment app and any bank involved, you can also report fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
20 Attorney's General including New York State, are suing the Trump Administration over its efforts to obtain data from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP. According to the lawsuit, the Department of Agriculture is improperly attempting to gather sensitive personal information from low-income families who use the program, including social security numbers and home addresses. New York Attorney General Letitia James reported that it was not the 1st time this administration has tried to use federal agencies to access Americans’ personal data, recently a federal judge declined to stop the IRS from sharing sensitive taxpayer information with federal immigration authorities.
This Thursday, July 31 is the deadline for New York State residents to register for the New York State Quitline’s “Quit-and-Win Contest.” Those 18 years of age or older who smoke or vape daily and commit to being tobacco-free for the first 25 days in August will have a chance to win $2,500 or one of 10 $250 prizes. The FBI announced that 44 year old Brent Trimbell of Hobart was arrested Sunday evening for sexual exploitation of a child. Trimbell is accused of exchanging sexually explicit messages with a female child victim, persuading her to create and send him videos of her engaged in sexually explicit conduct, having sexual contact with the victim at least 3 times and sending the victim sexually explicit videos. Trimbell was charged by state authorities with state sex offenses, but last week he was released on bail. If convicted, Trimbell faces 15 to 30 years in Jail, a term of supervised release of at least 5 years to life after serving a prison term, register as a sex offender, pay a fine of $250,000, forfeiture of property used to commit the offenses, and he would have to pay restitution to the victim. FBI officials worked with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Attorney’s Office, Trimbell was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending further proceedings.
State Police are investigating a death of a 16-year-old female following a medical emergency on Saturday, a Trooper responded to a residence on State Route 41 in McGraw, for an unresponsive juvenile, she was unconscious & CPR was already in progress, she was taken to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center & was pronounced deceased a short time later. An investigation by the State Police BCU is ongoing, more information will be released following an autopsy.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced that $25 million in State funding has been awarded to enhance safety, modernize operations, promote environmental resilience and enhance regional economic competitiveness at airports across New York. The funding includes the Greater Binghamton Airport / Link Field, which will receive $2.49 million to rehabilitate hangars.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Damon Sobers of Oneonta for 2nd degree Assault, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Menacing and Harassment, following an investigation into a domestic dispute in the Town of Oneonta. Deputies were told that the victim had struck in the head with the butt of the gun and suffered a large laceration to the face and that Sobers may be in possession of a firearm. Sobers was later taken into custody and was transported to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office & was being held pending arraignment.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand discussed the Trump administration’s cuts to federal agencies that protect seniors from frauds and scams:

Senator Gillibrand said that last year, seniors lost almost $5 billion to scammers; these financial losses can be devastating for older adults with limited income. Gillibrand has called on the Government Accountability Office to examine how cuts affect federal efforts to protect seniors from scams. State tax receipts totaled $33.2 billion through the first quarter of State Fiscal Year, about $580.5 million higher than the most recent Division of the Budget estimates. State tax collections were also $3.3 billion higher than last year's 1st quarter, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute in the Town of Walton in May, 36-year-old Gerald Walke had engaged in a verbal domestic dispute and displayed a knife, while in the presence of two juveniles, the Town of Walton Court issued an Arrest Warrant, last week, Otsego County Sheriff’s Office located Walke, he was turned over to Delaware County Deputies & was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and 2 counts of Menacing, Walke was processed and turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment.
State Police arrested 34 year old Kyle Packer of Oneonta on an arrest warrant for Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing Governmental Administration. On June 12, Packer was involved in a domestic dispute in Edmeston where he violated an order of protection, unlawfully entered a home and struck a victim & left prior to the Trooper’s arrival. Troopers located Packer on June 24 in the town of New Berlin, where he fled on tractor into a wooded area. A Trooper observed Packer Tuesday in the town of Columbia, he was taken into custody and was processed then transported to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducting a traffic stop Sunday, the driver was unable to provide a valid driver’s license, K9 Dexter & Deputies located methamphetamine and illegal fireworks. Deputies identified the operator as 42 year old Ryan Fletcher of Delhi, Deputies determined that Fletcher's privileges to operate a motor vehicle were suspended. Fletcher was charged with Unlawful Possession of Fireworks, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Criminal Impersonation & Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and various traffic violations, Fletcher was released on appearance tickets for Town of Delhi court at a later date.
The State Department of Transportation announced the exit 8 off-ramp from Interstate 88 West to State Route 206 in Bainbridge will be closed today for pavement repairs, from 8 am. to 2 pm. Drivers should follow the posted detour route using Exit 9, State Route 8 Northbound to State Route 7 Westbound to State Route 206.

State Police revealed today that the August 10th investigation of 2 deaths in Chenango Forks is consistent with a homicide and suicide. The preliminary investigation determined that 38 year old Matthew Lott caused the death of 63 year old Scott Cleary, using a firearm. Matthew Lott later caused his own death with a firearm a short distance from a residence on Parsons Road.
The State Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, upheld a law that registered voter can cast a ballot by mail, which rejected a Republican Party challenge to the legislation. The 6-1 ruling from the state Court of Appeals affirmed lower court rulings that the voting expansion law approved by the Legislature last year did not violate the state's constitution.
The State Department of Health & the State Education Department have issued an official determination that certifies pharmacists can administer vaccines against m pox. The Health Department stated that there is a new m pox variant circulating in Africa, which prompted the World Health Organization to declare a global health emergency. The FBI’s Internet Crime Report estimates that the annual loss to victims aged 60 years and older in the United States is $3.4 billion dollars, the highest of any age group. On Tuesday, members of the Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management Unit conducted a Seat Belt Checkpoint on the Exit 6 on-ramp to Interstate 81 south just off Upper Front Street in Chenango. Troopers found 17 adults that weren’t wearing seat belts and one child that was not properly restrained. Each violator was ticketed. Troopers additionally issued 19 tickets for other vehicle and traffic violations. New York crash data indicates that approximately one third of all motor vehicle occupants killed on highways are unrestrained.
State Health Department Officials confirmed that a Long Island man in his 50's is the 1st confirmed case of the West Nile Virus in New York State this summer, the unidentified man was hospitalized briefly but has recovered and was released. 2 more cases were confirmed this week in Westchester County Health Department, West Nile is spread by mosquitoes, Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, joint pain, and minor bleeding. New York State had the most cases of the West Nile Virus in the nation is recently as 2022.

Governor Kathy Hochul today directed the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to issue an emergency declaration to help communities in 18 counties rebuild critical infrastructure after severe storms and flash flooding that took place August 9-10, 2024. State Police revealed today that the August 10th investigation of 2 deaths in Chenango Forks is consistent with a homicide and suicide. The preliminary investigation determined that 38 year old Matthew Lott caused the death of 63 year old Scott Cleary, using a firearm. Matthew Lott later caused his own death with a firearm a short distance from a residence on Parsons Road.
The State Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, upheld a law that registered voter can cast a ballot by mail, which rejected a Republican Party challenge to the legislation. The 6-1 ruling from the state Court of Appeals affirmed lower court rulings that the voting expansion law approved by the Legislature last year did not violate the state's constitution.

On Tuesday, members of the Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management Unit conducted a Seat Belt Checkpoint on the Exit 6 on-ramp to Interstate 81 south just off Upper Front Street in Chenango. Troopers found 17 adults that weren’t wearing seat belts and one child that was not properly restrained. Each violator was ticketed. Troopers additionally issued 19 tickets for other vehicle and traffic violations. New York crash data indicates that approximately one third of all motor vehicle occupants killed on highways are unrestrained.
State Health Department Officials confirmed that a Long Island man in his 50's is the 1st confirmed case of the West Nile Virus in New York State this summer, the unidentified man was hospitalized briefly but has recovered and was released. 2 more cases were confirmed this week in Westchester County Health Department, West Nile is spread by mosquitoes, Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, joint pain, and minor bleeding. New York State had the most cases of the West Nile Virus in the nation is recently as 2022.

56 year old Paul Geer of Hancock was arraigned on a federal indictment charging him with 3 counts of coercing and enticing 3 separate children to travel across state lines to engage in unlawful sexual activity, Geer was a teacher at the Family Foundation School in Hancock, he imposed various disciplinary sanctions on students which were equivalent to torture and forcing children to perform forced physical labor, in 1994, 2000, and 2001, Geer used his position of authority to coerce 3 students to travel with him, to Maine, Pennsylvania, and Toronto, Canada, with intent to engage in sexual activity with the minors. The 3 counts of coercion and enticement each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of 5 years. The 3 counts of transporting children across state lines carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 5 years, he will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Branden Barker of Edmeston following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident. Barker was charged with DWI, Driving w/.08% or more, Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident & Failure to Keep Right, he was located in the vicinity of the accident in Edmeston after fleeing the scene, he'll face court action shortly.
A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Lebanon New Jersey This Morning, which was felt around the Northeast region of the United States, according to the United States Geological Survey. The U.S.G.S. received 102 responses of residents having felt the earthquake, around 10:23 AM.
The U.S. Social Security officials reported a new scam where people posing as Social Security Agents ask unsuspecting residents for cash or gift cards & to meet them in person to hand off the cash. The Utica Police Department has disclosed the identities of the deceased individuals involved in the Kingston Road incident Tuesday night. The 2 deceased individuals were 22 year old Sara Doody and 26 year old Donte Green both of Utica. Utica Police said that Green shot Doody in the head, shot his grandfather in the leg & when Police responded, he fire shots at the Officer and fled into a nearby resident & shot himself to death with a rifle. The 2 year old child of Doody & Green was removed from the scene and was brought to family members, Green's Grandfather is in an area hospital recovering from gunshot wounds to his legs.

State Police and the State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to a tractor trailer rollover on State Route 17 in the Town of Windsor, at about 11:00 this morning. Police said that no other vehicle was involved. The driver was transported to a local hospital. One lane of 17 east bound and one lane of 17 west bound was closed near exit 81; the cause of the accident is under investigation.
Governor Cuomo today announced more than $29 million in grant funding has been awarded to several counties to improve local emergency communication. This funding will support a variety of projects. Locally, Chenango County will receive $6,000,000 to build several new communications tower sites, add new radio channels to strengthen communications between multiple jurisdictions and agencies, as well as upgrade the county's 911 communications center with new equipment to improve monitoring of those multi-jurisdictional communications channels.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday to an address in the Town of Plymouth to locate 26 year old Chelsey Hendricks on an Arrest Warrant. Deputies located a Hendricks sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle, While Deputies were taking Hendricks into custody, Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia were located & the vehicle was seized. The investigation revealed that Hendricks possessed Methamphetamine, she was arraigned on the Warrant and for Criminal possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending future court action. The investigation is ongoing & more charges are anticipated.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Adrianna Burlison of Norwich for Promoting Prison Contraband last Friday, following an investigation into drugs being mailed to an inmate at the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Burlison faces action in Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
The State Health Department reported today that over 285,000 new Yorkers were tested for COVID 19 Wednesday, & the positivity rate was down to 3.5%, the lowest since November 25th. Patients hospitalizations were down to 7,342, after hovering over 8,000 for weeks, the number of patients in an ICU bed went down to 1,402, after being at or above 1500 for many weeks and the number of patients on Ventilators was down to 941, after being over 1000 for many weeks, there were 122 deaths from COVID on Wednesday.
Chenango County Public Health reported 10 new COVID cases today, Hospitalization went down by 6 to 19, there 6 less active cases, the numbers is now 104, people in quarantine went down by 29 to 273.
State Police are reminding the public that if someone calls, texts, emails or messages you on social media and asks you to send money in the form of a gift card, it’s probably a scam. State Police continue to receive complaints of different scams involving gift cards, some of the scammers claim to be asking to help local small business, a religious organization, or they claim to be from the IRS. State Police and the State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to a report of a dump truck into a residence Wednesday morning at about 8:30 AM. The dump truck struck a trailer on Caldwell Hill Road near State Route 79 in the town of Lisle. The accident is still under investigation. The driver of the dump truck reported arm and neck pain.
Delaware County Public Health reported 17 new COVID 19 cases Wednesday; they have 105 active cases with 22 hospitalized and 267 quarantined.
The State Health Department of Health has provided updated statistics on COVID-related nursing home deaths, both inside and outside of the facilities, following a Supreme Court order. The state previously reported a death only as a ‘nursing home death’ if it occurred in the facility. If a nursing home resident died in a hospital, it was counted in the Hospital death numbers. The full breakdown is available categorized by County & each facility at the State Health Department website.
The Sidney Central School District has been notified that one 5th grade student has tested positive for COVID-19. The student has not been on campus since Monday, February 8th. The Delaware County Health Department has conducted an investigation and the contact tracing has been completed. There will be no change to the Sidney instructional model.

State Police and the State Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit responded to a tractor trailer rollover on State Route 17 in the Town of Windsor, at about 11:00 this morning. Police said that no other vehicle was involved. The driver was transported to a local hospital. One lane of 17 east bound and one lane of 17 west bound was closed near exit 81; the cause of the accident is under investigation.
Governor Cuomo today announced more than $29 million in grant funding has been awarded to several counties to improve local emergency communication. This funding will support a variety of projects. Locally, Chenango County will receive $6,000,000 to build several new communications tower sites, add new radio channels to strengthen communications between multiple jurisdictions and agencies, as well as upgrade the county's 911 communications center with new equipment to improve monitoring of those multi-jurisdictional communications channels.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday to an address in the Town of Plymouth to locate 26 year old Chelsey Hendricks on an Arrest Warrant. Deputies located a Hendricks sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle, While Deputies were taking Hendricks into custody, Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia were located & the vehicle was seized. The investigation revealed that Hendricks possessed Methamphetamine, she was arraigned on the Warrant and for Criminal possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending future court action. The investigation is ongoing & more charges are anticipated.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Adrianna Burlison of Norwich for Promoting Prison Contraband last Friday, following an investigation into drugs being mailed to an inmate at the Chenango County Correctional Facility. Burlison faces action in Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
The State Health Department reported today that over 285,000 new Yorkers were tested for COVID 19 Wednesday, & the positivity rate was down to 3.5%, the lowest since November 25th. Patients hospitalizations were down to 7,342, after hovering over 8,000 for weeks, the number of patients in an ICU bed went down to 1,402, after being at or above 1500 for many weeks and the number of patients on Ventilators was down to 941, after being over 1000 for many weeks, there were 122 deaths from COVID on Wednesday.

State Police are reminding the public that if someone calls, texts, emails or messages you on social media and asks you to send money in the form of a gift card, it’s probably a scam. State Police continue to receive complaints of different scams involving gift cards, some of the scammers claim to be asking to help local small business, a religious organization, or they claim to be from the IRS. Delaware County Public Health reported 17 new COVID 19 cases Wednesday; they have 105 active cases with 22 hospitalized and 267 quarantined.
The State Health Department of Health has provided updated statistics on COVID-related nursing home deaths, both inside and outside of the facilities, following a Supreme Court order. The state previously reported a death only as a ‘nursing home death’ if it occurred in the facility. If a nursing home resident died in a hospital, it was counted in the Hospital death numbers. The Sidney Central School District has been notified that one 5th grade student has tested positive for COVID-19. The student has not been on campus since Monday, February 8th. Chenango County Public Health reported 8 new cases of COVID 19 today, bringing their total to 1758. They have 191 active cases, 21 are hospitalized and 532 are quarantined, they have had 32 death since last spring.
The Otsego County Department of Health reported 80 new positive COVID 19 cases Tuesday. 21 people are currently hospitalized from the virus, there are 263 active cases & the county has reported a total of 23 deaths from the virus, including 4 since January 1st.

Victims report after answering the ad, the suspects provide a photo of the breed they are looking for and arrange a deposit to be paid. State Police said that the scammers request payments through various payments Apps like CashApp, All communication with the “breeder” takes place by text. State Police arrested 36 year old Paul Zandt of Deposit for 3rd degree Assault. The arrest stems from an investigation of an altercation Saturday at Dollar General in Windsor. Zandt is accused of striking the victim in the face in the parking lot of Dollar General then leaving the area. The victim was checked out by Eastern Broome Ambulance but was not transported to a hospital. The victim and Zandt did not know each other prior to the incident. Zandt is a State Trooper, but was not on duty at the time of the incident, he was arrested and released on appearance tickets to the town of Windsor court on January 25th.
Delaware County Public Health announced Tuesday that a 22nd person has died of Covid-19 related complications. Delaware County Public Health received 22 positive lab reports for COVID-19 Tuesday, they report 129 active cases in the County with 16 hospitalized & 231 quarantined.
Due to an uptick in COVID cases, the Bainbridge-Guilford Schools will be fully remote for the remainder of this week. Students should plan on full remote instruction for the next 3 days.
The Walton Central School District has been advised that a staff member has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Pankiewicz was processed and released on an appearance ticket directing him to appear in the Town of Tompkins Court at a later date.

speed for testing for the virus, they expect to double the number of testing
next to 6000 a day. Today there are 421 confirmed

have been no deaths in New York State, and there are 41 nationwide, 31 in the
State of Washington.

led to significant financial loss to an elderly local resident. Investigators were contacted by The Delaware
National Bank of Delhi, the customer had fallen victim twice to an on-line
Pop-Up scam and lost thousands of dollars, the victim was stopped from further
issues by an alert UPS employee. The investigation is on-going by Delaware
County Sheriff's Investigators and San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff DuMond reminds the public that they
should contact the Sheriff's Office or local law enforcement if they may be the
target of a scam or identity theft. On-line
complaint forms are available through the State Attorney General, ag.ny.gov;
the Federal Trade Commission, consumer.ftc.gov; and the FBI at ic3.gov.

with Quest Diagnostics announced that the AMBA Blood Clinic will continue as
planned tomorrow morning at the Sidney Elks Lodge. The event will run from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM,

electronic devices, and will also conduct underage drinking and unlawful sales
to minor’s details during the campaign.

communities they serve. The survey will
provide information on critical operating and programming issues that are

Chenango County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to implement a 4%
occupancy "Bed" tax in Chenango County. The new Law will provide a
dedicated funding stream to promote and develop the tourism industry in
Chenango County and to reduce pressure on the property tax levy. Chenango County has been one of just a few
counties in New York State that had not previously collected a bed tax. Tourism is New York’s 3rd largest industry,
hosting 253 million visitors annually who spend 71.8 billion at NYS businesses
creating 114.8 billion in economic impact.

York State Public High School Athletic Association announced that regional
& state championships will be postponed indefinitely. The impacted events include Ice Hockey, Bowling
& the Boys & Girls Basketball regional & State Championships. Officials announced the postponements were

Baldrick’s Foundation will host head-shaving events tomorrow at the American
Legion in Norwich, where over 30 volunteers will shave their heads to raise
money for childhood cancer research.

5 Mile Point Fire Company will hold their 6th annual blood
drive in memory of Trooper Christopher Skinner.
Trooper Christopher Skinner served for 13 years with the state police,
he was killed in the line of duty on May 29, 2014 when he was struck by a
pick-up truck while making a routine traffic stop, and he also served as a
firefighter with the Five Mile Point Fire Company. The event will be held on Friday, December 27
from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM at the 5 Mile Point Fire Company at 16 Crescent

Governor Cuomo proposes protecting New York consumers from
predatory and abusive debt collectors, by requiring debt collectors to be
licensed by the State Department of Financial Services, where they would have
to adhere to stringent standards of conduct and empower the State to examine
debt collectors and pull the license of bad services. The proposal will also
codify a FTC rule that prohibits confessions of judgment, which give lenders
the unfettered power to go into court, get a judgment from a clerk and empty
the consumer's bank account.
A bill from Assemblywoman Didi Barrett and State Senate
Agriculture Chair Jen Metzger to protect New York’s livestock industry from the
Asian long horned tick was signed into law by the Governor this week. The new law directs the DEC Commissioner to
include the Asian long horned tick on the State’s invasive species list and on
the DEC’s comprehensive plan for invasive species management, and also directs
the Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets to develop and distribute to
farmers an informational pamphlet on Asian long horned tick treatment,
management, and prevention. The tick was
first reported in the United States in 2017, the 1st new tick
species to enter the country in 50 years, and is currently found in 7 states
including New York.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 67 year old Thomas
Lima of Franklin for 2nd degree harassment plus 12 counts of
Criminal contempt. It is alleged that
Lima engaged in a course of conduct which alarmed another person & violated
an Order of Protection. Lima was arraigned in the Delhi Town court and released
on his own recognizance; he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Franklin
Court at a later date.
State Officials announced a
$10.5 million settlement with NYSEG & Rochester Gas & Electric Corp.,
following the companies' failure to adequately prepare for and restore service
after storms in 2018 that left more than 300,000 homes and businesses without
power. NYSEG acknowledges and admits to 18 violations
of its state-approved emergency response plans, and RG&E acknowledges and
admits 3 violations. The money will be
used to provide customer benefits at the direction of the Public Service Commission.
NYSEG will hire and maintain 20
additional employees with storm restoration responsibilities.
Governor Cuomo announced a proposal to prohibit the
distribution and use of Styrofoam, single-use food containers. The proposal
also bans the sale of packaging materials known as packing peanuts.
Additionally, the bill would authorize the State Department of Environmental
Conservation to review and take action to limit or ban other packaging material
upon a finding of environmental impact. The ban would go into effect by January
1, 2022. The ban exempts prepackaged food sealed prior to receipt at a
restaurant or food service establishment, as well as packaging for uncooked or
raw meat, fish or eggs.
A City of Norwich resident was arrested by the Chenango
County Sheriff’s Office on a Fugitive from Justice Warrant. Deputies arrested 33 year old Michael Bias of
Norwich as a Fugitive from Justice Warrant, after arresting him on other charges.
Bias was arraigned in the Chenango County Court and was remanded to the
Chenango County Jail, where he will be picked up by the Cumberland County
Sheriff’s Office at a later date.
A Village of Bainbridge resident was arrested by the
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal contempt. 58 year old William
Armstrong was arrested after the Sheriff’s Department received a complaint that
Armstrong violated an order of protection. Armstrong was arraigned in the Town
of Bainbridge Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250 cash
and $500 bond.
Today is Steve Craig's last day at Commerce Chenango in
Norwich. Steve is retiring after taking
over as leader of the Chamber & IDA earlier this day, and following a
lengthy career in Radio & Television News, he will be succeeded by Kerri
Green of Sidney as President & CEO.

Trooper Christopher Skinner served for 13 years with the state police,
he was killed in the line of duty on May 29, 2014 when he was struck by a
pick-up truck while making a routine traffic stop, and he also served as a
firefighter with the Five Mile Point Fire Company. The event will be held on Friday, December 27
from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM at the 5 Mile Point Fire Company at 16 Crescent

Governor Cuomo proposes protecting New York consumers from
predatory and abusive debt collectors, by requiring debt collectors to be
licensed by the State Department of Financial Services, where they would have
to adhere to stringent standards of conduct and empower the State to examine
debt collectors and pull the license of bad services. The proposal will also
codify a FTC rule that prohibits confessions of judgment, which give lenders
the unfettered power to go into court, get a judgment from a clerk and empty
the consumer's bank account.
A bill from Assemblywoman Didi Barrett and State Senate
Agriculture Chair Jen Metzger to protect New York’s livestock industry from the
Asian long horned tick was signed into law by the Governor this week. The new law directs the DEC Commissioner to
include the Asian long horned tick on the State’s invasive species list and on
the DEC’s comprehensive plan for invasive species management, and also directs
the Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets to develop and distribute to
farmers an informational pamphlet on Asian long horned tick treatment,
management, and prevention. The tick was
first reported in the United States in 2017, the 1st new tick
species to enter the country in 50 years, and is currently found in 7 states
including New York.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 67 year old Thomas
Lima of Franklin for 2nd degree harassment plus 12 counts of
Criminal contempt. It is alleged that
Lima engaged in a course of conduct which alarmed another person & violated
an Order of Protection. Lima was arraigned in the Delhi Town court and released
on his own recognizance; he is scheduled to appear in the Town of Franklin
Court at a later date.
