The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.

37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.

The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

State Police arrested 62 year old Dawn Hawley of Delancey for Stalking, after a victim located a tracking device in their vehicle. The victim believed that Hawley had placed the tracker in December 2025 but was unable to find it until last week, Hawley was processed and was issued an appearance ticket to the Hamden Town Court on July 22, 2026.

The State DOT advises motorists that State Route 23 in the Town of Plymouth, just west of Ashcraft Road, has reopened to alternating single-lane traffic, controlled by a temporary signal, as work continues on a culvert replacement project. The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place. Construction began on June 29, and work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting. State Police arrested 24 year old Tyler Russell of Endwell, Monday for 6 counts of 2nd degree Manslaughter & 1 count of Arson, he is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility without bail pending Grand Jury action.

The FBI & the Johnson City Police Department arrested 69 year old Robert Randesi of Johnson City on federal drug & weapons charges after the execution of search warrant at a warehouse style building in Johnson City. Officers located over 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, quantities of marijuana, approximately $24,000 in cash, several firearms including AR-15 style rifles, ghost guns, firearm parts and ammunition, plus machinist tools and metal fabricating equipment consistent with tools used to construct or mill firearms & their parts. Randesi is currently in the Broome County Jail, He faces court action for both state and federal charges.

The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Mark Andrews of Schenevus, for DWI, Refusal to take Breath Test, Failure to Keep Right, Driving on slopes and shoulders and Speed not reasonable and prudent following a 1 car property damage motor vehicle accident in the Town of Middlefield. Andrews was processed and released & will appear in Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Grand Larceny, after an investigation revealed that Lazarati was working with the Assigned Counsel Program in Chenango County, Lazarati submitted duplicate billing to Chenango County for the same legal services and accepted payment. Chenango County sustained a financial loss of approximately $4,700. Lazarati was arrested was arrested, and was turned over to members of Troop C, he was processed & then transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

38 year old Ronald Boerner of Andes pleaded guilty in the Town of Andes Court to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, he will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, Impaired Driver’s Program and his license will be revoked for at least six months., if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail. On October 15, 2025, State Police responded to a 2 car accident in Andes, they found that a vehicle was rear-ended when turning into a parking lot, Boerner failed Field Sobriety Tests and was arrested.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office updated the public on the recent Salmonella outbreak at the jail, with 12 hospitalized over hundreds sickened, Broome County Health Department Director Olivia Catalano spoke at this afternoon's press conference:

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar stated that while many have called for the quick dismissal of the Food Care Provider, that process would take months to dismiss and appoint a new provider, he referenced a similar situation several years ago with a food provider at an area nursing home:

There are no current hospitalizations among the inmates, Health care workers are remaining on site to continue to monitor the situation to insure that another outbreak does not occur.

State DOT announced today that starting on June 29th, they will be replacing a culvert, leading to Route 23 west of Ashcraft Road, the project is expected to take about 6 weeks, a detour will lead traffic onto County Road 10, County Road 10A and State Route 12 through Pharsalia, Preston and Norwich. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and give themselves ample time in their commutes.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jon Hertzog of Port Crane for DWI following a 2 vehicle crash on Interstate 88 Tuesday in the town of Chenango. An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

State Police arrested 44 year old Jason Marsh of Chenango Forks following a rape investigation. Marsh was charged with 1st degree rape, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing & Unlawful Imprisonment, the investigation determined that while at a residence in the town of Greene, Marsh forcibly sexually assaulted, struck and choked the victim, who did escape & contacted police and was evaluated at a local hospital. Marsh was arrested at his residence and later transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded to the jail pending his next court date on June 4th.

State Police arrested 37 year old Adam Rowe of Truxton after an investigation of the manufacturing and selling of ghost guns. State Police CSU and Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested Rowe Sunday, after a search warrant was executed at his residence. Police seized an AR-style ghost gun with a loaded 10-round magazine, plus a host of other weapons, plus Three 3D printers, 3 raccoons & 1 opossum. Rowe was charged with numerous counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition Feeding Device, and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, additional charges are pending through the DEC regarding the wildlife. Rowe possessed many firearms and utilized 3D printers to manufacture firearms & components, As a convicted felon on probation, he is prohibited from possessing firearms. 22 year old Angela Dennis of Truxton was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Rowe was processed was being held for Arraignment, Dennis was issued appearance tickets and was released.

The New York State Public Service Commission set temporary rate increases for NYSEG that are less than what the company requested. The temporary rates have no bearing on the Commission’s final determinations, the Commission has 11 months to make a determination on a utility rate filing. The temporary rates set by the Commission start June 1st, the increase for NYSEG customers will be 3.7% percent for electric, 0.5% for gas.

School budgets will be voted on state wide today, as well as Board of Education in school bus purchases in some cases. Check with you local school district website or Facebook page for the times & locations for voting.

The State Department of Transportation reminds Oneonta area residents invites the public to an Open House on Tuesday May 19th to discuss project plans and construction for the Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project. The project calls for improving safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian access on State Route 23 & 28, by extended turning lanes, additional sidewalks, full repaving, and updated pavement markings. Construction is expected to start in June and continue through fall of 2027. The open house will be held on Tuesday at the Southside Community Room at 5006 State Highway 23 in Oneonta, session will be from 11 am. to 1 pm. and 4 pm. to 6 pm.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office responded to a dump truck rollover accident with entrapment Tuesday Morning at the intersection of County Route 11 and Burke Hill Road in the Town of Hartwick. One occupant was extricated and transported to Bassett Medical Center for further evaluation. The driver was extricated using hydraulic rescue tools and was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

This Week is National Work Zone Awareness Week, a campaign today through Friday that promotes work zone safety statewide, urging drivers to slow down, stay alert and follow New York State’s Move Over Law to protect highway and roadside workers. After three straight years of decline, work zone crashes have increased, In 2025, there were 366 work zone crashes on NYSDOT-owned roads that resulted in 58 injuries and two fatalities. Beginning this week & running throughout the summer, State Police and local law enforcement agencies will conduct “Operation Hardhat” details in active work zones statewide. New York continues to expand its Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, where cameras are deployed, to deter speeding & aggressive driving, more information is available at ny.gov/workzone.

51 year old Jason Gonzales of Laurens pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, he was sentenced to 5 years in state prison on each charge, to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision. On December 6, State Police conducted a traffic stop in Sidney when a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign, the Trooper observed several hypodermic needles and scales, Gonzales was a passenger in the vehicle, he threw a plastic bag containing fentanyl out of the vehicle. Gonzalez was arrested, processed & released. 5 days later, another State Trooper conducted a traffic stop on River Road in Sidney, Gonzales was once again a passenger with drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, Gonzales was taken into custody, he was searched, and fentanyl was found, he appeared in Delaware County Court & pleaded guilty, the sentences will run concurrently, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail to begin his sentence.

The State DOT is advising motorists to expect lane closures on I-81 northbound between exits 16 and 21 starting today as crews begin a $19 million pavement resurfacing project. 9 miles from Front Street to Castle Creek will be upgraded, Work will be scheduled overnight where possible, and work restrictions will be in place during events such as the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally. The project is expected to be completed in winter 2026. Motorists are urged to stay alert, obey posted work zone speeds and move over when approaching highway work crews.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee & law enforcement agencies across the state, will participate in the “No Empty Chair” Campaign this week focused on education, awareness, and enforcement to keep young drivers safe. The State DOT & the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced that 1 lane of eastbound travel is open on I-88 Between Exits 10 & 12 this afternoon. The work is continuing in that area and there is no timetable yet for re-opening the 2nd lane of I-88 Eastbound.

The City of Norwich is pursuing all avenues to try to find a new supermarket chain to move into a key downtown location that unexpected lost a large supermarket, Norwich Mayor Robert Jeffrey told WCDO news that the incomes of residents in that area of the City makes acquiring a new store difficult:

Mayor Jeffrey said that they are working with area state & Federal lawmakers to try to bring a new store in, and they hope to get positive action soon.

New York State Department of Transportation announced that they plan to fill 175,000 potholes across the state, now that the snow & Ice season has ended. Governor Hochul and Commissioner Dominguez joined a paving crew Monday morning to show that filling potholes is a priority this spring.

State Police will participate in a national distracted driving enforcement campaign as part of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The “Put the Phone Away or Pay,” will run from Today, through Monday, April 13th. Troopers will conduct targeted enforcement details focused on drivers using electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 3,200 people were killed in distraction-affected crashes in the United States in 2024. During the April 2025 “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign, New York State Troopers issued 22,867 tickets, including 4,607 for distracted driving violations.

Patrick Shea was sentenced to 7 years in state prison and 5 years of post-release supervision for 4th Degree Arson and 2nd Degree Manslaughter, in connection with the February 2025 fire at 1 Main Street in Binghamton, that led to the death of Firefighter JR Gaudet, who was trapped under debris while battling the blaze, he later died at Wilson Hospital, Shea pleaded guilty to the charges in January.

The State DOT announced that I-88 westbound between exit 10 to 12 in Unadilla & Otego have been re-opened to traffic, the eastbound lanes will remain closed until DOT Engineers deem the highway safe after repairs to a sinkhole.

State Police responded Saturday at about 5:00 PM to a report of a car into a house in the town of Oneonta. An investigation at the scene revealed that a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling west at an unsafe speed while on State Highway 23 in the town of Oneonta when the vehicle went off the roadway and struck a house. The 18-year-old male operator from Schenevus was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital to be treated. Impairment was not a factor in the crash. 2 residents inside the home at the time of the crash were not injured.

P.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 4-1-26

The State DOT posted an update this afternoon, stating that I-88 is closed for a 9.5-mile stretch between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions, with a detour along State Route 7 currently in place. State Police noticed atypical erosion along the highway embankment that could potentially compromise the safety of the road. Out of an abundance of caution, the highway was closed Tuesday, Engineers are exploring the cause of this erosion, and a contractor is mobilizing in anticipation of emergency repairs along the road. The highway will continue to be closed until our engineers deem it safe to reopen.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than $25 million is being awarded to 133 farms in 23 counties across the state through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program, for projects to help New York’s farmers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect water quality, protect and enhance soil health, in the Southern Tier, more than $3.7 Million Dollars has been awarded to 33 farms.

The Masonville Town Board announced that tonight's meeting has been re-scheduled, their next meeting will be held on Wednesday April 8th at 7:30 PM.

The Unadilla Fire Department announced an update on the I-88 Closure between Exit 10 and Exit 12. I-88 is currently closed westbound at Exit 12, to Exit 10, also the Route 357 bridge over the Susquehanna River is closed at this time, due to tractor trailers being unable to safely navigate the detour turn on to State Route 7. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along the detour on State Route 7.

The State DEC Announced that today is the Start of Trout Fishing Season. The DEC trout stocking is in full swing with more than 1.7 million catchable-size brook, brown, and rainbow trout stocked in waters across the state through early June. More information is available at the State DEC website.

The State DOT & State Police closed I-88 between Exits 10 and 12 in both directions until further notice, A large amount of soil has eroded underneath the roadway, this is not due to a culvert collapse, but to an as yet unknown water issue. Crews from the New York State Department of Transportation are on the scene assessing the issue. Motorists are advised to follow the established detour routes on to State Route 7, Detour signage is in place to guide motorists. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available from the DOT. Motorists are urged to allow for extra travel time, and exercise caution while traveling along detour on State Route 7.

Sidney Police Department responded to a 3 vehicle head on collision Thursday Morning at about 10:20 AM on State Route 8 & River Street. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. The Sidney Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Sidney Fire Department, Sidney EMS, State Police & DOT, among others, The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.

51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was sentenced today in Broome County Court following his conviction for Grand Larceny after a Jury Trial. Hoose was sentenced to a term of 2 to 6 years in New York State Prison, also the Court entered a Civil Judgment in favor of the victim. Hoose operated a business known as H&H Contracting, he entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally converted over $3,000 of those funds for other purposes unrelated to the project. Hoose further failed to provide the victim with an accounting and disposition of the trust funds despite a written request, as required by Law.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.

Republican Candidate Terry Bernardo will hold a Meet & Greet with local voters, on Sunday from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 PM, at the Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney. Bernardo is running for the 51 State Senate District, seeking to replace Peter Oberacker, who has decided to run for Congress in the next election.

State Police arrested 33 year old Michael Davis Jr. of Unadilla Wednesday for Grand Larceny, following an investigation of a couple from Unadilla looking for a contractor to complete work at their residence. Davis was hired, The couple provided him Davis with $1,500 for materials, but failed to start the work. Davis was arrested and was issued an appearance ticket to the Unadilla Town Court on April 21, 2026.

21 year old Connor Steidle of South Carolina pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to attempted criminal possession of a weapon & was sentenced to 3 years in state prison followed by 3 years of post release supervision. On December 12th, 2025, Steidle reportedly threatened his girlfriend in Sidney with a loaded pistol, Sidney Police & A State Trooper arrested Steidle, he was also ordered to stay away from the victim after completing his prison sentence.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $250 million to help communities afford water and sewer infrastructure improvements. The Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved financing and State and federal grants for a number of local governments to access for crucial upgrades. Locally, Funding was approved for the Village of Bainbridge, they will receive $7.5 million in State grants and low-cost financing for the replacement of approximately 13,000 linear feet of water main and waterlines plus the replacement of Well No. 1 and backup power installation for Wells 1 and 3. The Town of Hancock, will receive $3 million in federal grant and interest-free financing for the creation of the Fishs Eddy Water System.

33 year old Christopher Reynolds of Hancock pleaded guilty on Tuesday, to criminal possession of a weapon after a child was injured when he shot the gun inside his home, State Police investigation revealed that on August 27, 2025 Reynolds unintentionally shot a gun inside his home, the child was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated and released.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Christina LoRusso of Hamden following an investigation of a 1 car accident on February 19th. Deputies were dispatched to State Route 10 near the County Solid Waste Management Facility in the Town of Walton. Lorusso drove off the roadway and over an embankment, crashing into the State DOT perimeter fencing, causing her vehicle to become stuck, she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Moving from Lane Unsafely. State Police Responded early this morning to 1092 County Road 37 in Mount Upton for a report of a plow truck that struck a house. An investigation determined that a Chenango County Highway Department plow was traveling west on County Road 37 salting the roadway when due to slick road conditions, the plow truck lost traction going up the hill. The plow truck rolled back down the hill while the operator attempted to regain control of the plow truck but was unable to and damaged a trailer, fence, road sign then struck the house. The accident led to the Gilberstville Mount Upton School District cancelling classes today, No injuries were reported.

Attorney General Letitia James released a statement as New federal rules now require many New Yorkers without dependents to meet work or activity requirements to keep their SNAP benefits, effective on March 1st, following the end of a longstanding statewide waiver. The requirements apply to people aged 18 to 64 who do not have a child under 14, who are not pregnant or caring for someone who cannot care for themselves, and do not have a disability that prevents them from working. James said that she advised SNAP recipients to watch for communications from State or local officials and to contact their local social services office if they believe they qualify for an exemption or need help meeting the requirements. Governor Hochul met business leaders to assess the damage of President Trump’s tariffs, so far, Based on estimates by the Budget Lab at Yale, the average New York household has faced an estimated $1,751 in added costs due to tariffs since they were enacted last year, for a total estimated $13.5 billion statewide impact. The Governor said that she was forced to propose $30 million in tariff relief in the Executive Budget to help impacted farmers across the state, after the tariffs causing higher equipment and supply costs among other major challenges. Last week the US Supreme Court ruling overturned Trump’s tariffs, business owners & Farmers told the Governor that the decision came too late.

State Department of Transportation released the state Highway Bridge statistics for each county, which includes when it was built, last inspected and what waterway it crosses, Delaware County had 16 of 448 bridges in poor condition, Otsego County had 26 out of 266 bridges in poor shape & in Chenango County a total of 15 out of 257 bridges were determined to be in poor condition. The State Department of Transportation announced today that 64 times this winter a vehicle has crashed into a DOT snowplow. Investigations revealed that drivers are going too fast for conditions, are following too closely, or trying to pass the plow while it is clearing the road for everyone, which has led to Taxpayer dollars being wasted on damage that was preventable.

Chobani had their new site plan changes approved by the Rome Planning Board on Tuesday night, as they continue with their expansion plans in New York State. Chobani was leasing over 168 acres on a golf course from Oneida County, but the acreage has been reduced to 93 acres in the new plan, Chobani plans to have the new facility running in 2027, with construction expected to be completed by the end of this year.

State Department of Transportation announced that major construction is complete on the $4 million roundabout project at The intersection of James F. Lettis Highway, Main Street & Maple Street in downtown Oneonta. The $4 million project began in the summer of 2025 and was funded through the Department's Highway Safety Improvement Program. It is the first of two projects in the City and Town of Oneonta, with a second project tentatively scheduled for the 2026 construction season to upgrade sidewalks and enhance the flow of traffic along State Routes 23 and 28 near the southern end of the Lettis Highway. In the coming weeks, some final touches will be added to the roundabout.

Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled proposals to strengthen New York’s gun laws by cracking down on 3D-printed and illegal firearms. The new legislation would establish criminal penalties for the manufacture of 3D-printed firearms and order minimum safety standards for 3D printer manufacturers to block the production of firearms and firearm components. The legislation would also require gun manufacturers to design their pistols so they cannot be modified into illegal machine guns, and require police departments and sheriffs’ offices to report recoveries of all 3D printed guns to the state.

The New Berlin Police Department & local firefighters responded to an accident on State Highway 23 near Sheff Road, where the vehicle caught on fire. The New Berlin Police Department reported that the road was closed in both directions following the accident, shortly before noon today, motorists were detoured around the site, more information will be released in the near future.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1:45 pm., Troopers were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision on State Route 79 near Still Road in Harpursville. The preliminary investigation reveals that a 17-year-old male from Whitney Point was operating a pick-up truck when he collided with a Town of Colesville dump truck, The 17-year-old was transported to Wilson Hospital and was later pronounced deceased. The 20-year-old operator of the dump truck did not report any injuries. The investigation is on-going. More will be released when it is available.

A former Broome-Tioga BOCES employee is facing charges after an investigation into inappropriate conduct with a BOCES student. On November 12, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office received a referral from the New York State Child Abuse Hotline regarding inappropriate conduct between a juvenile student and a member of the Broome-Tioga BOCES faculty. 51 year old Evan Thorson of Endicott was charged with Child Endangerment and Official Misconduct, a warrant & an Order of Protection was issued by the Town of Dickinson Court. Thorson turned himself in and was processed on Monday. Thorson was no longer employed by BroomeTioga BOCES.

The State Department of Health has confirmed that the State's childhood vaccination policies remain unchanged despite recent federal revisions to immunization recommendations. The Department confirmed that there will be no changes to vaccine access, insurance coverage or the federal Vaccines for Children program, which provides vaccines at no cost to eligible children. Health care providers in New York State are advised to continue their "evidence-based immunization practices." State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. "There was no new science, safety data or discovery presented by the federal government."

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 people on a variety of felony charge. On December 15th, deputies responded to a burglary complaint in the Town of Binghamton, they found fresh footprints in the snow, signs of a break-in and smoke billowing from inside the house due to an active fire. State Police & Binghamton Fire Department responded, Deputies followed footprints and found evidence of stolen items, they used a drone to & located 37 year old Anthony Storti of Conklin, who was found to be in possession of narcotics, the investigation uncovered that Storti had been in the residence, left a vape behind and he set a fire inside. 24 year old Allyson Russell of Endicott, was identified as an accomplice in the burglary and arson. Both were charged with a host of felonies including Burglary, Arson criminal possession of a weapon, Grand Larceny & criminal possession of a controlled substance, they face court action shortly.

Trout Creek Fire Department responded at about 11:20 Tuesday morning for a tractor trailer into a house. Nobody was home at the residence and that the driver of the truck was not injured. Masonville Volunteer Fire Department, State DOT, State Police, Delaware County Sheriff's Office, NYSEG and a code enforcement officer also responded, State Highway 206 was closed, All units were back in service around 3:30 PM.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced more than $463 million has been awarded statewide through the State's Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Long Island, the Mohawk Valley, New York City and the Southern Tier were chosen as winners of the inaugural $150 million Advancing Collaboration for High-impact Initiatives for Economic Visions & Expansion competition, The Southern Tier was awarded more than $26.4 million to support 27 projects.

A Federal Court Jury returned a guilty verdict against ANTHONY WALLACE of the Bronx, for kidnapping a minor, coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in illegal sex, transportation of a minor across state lines to engage in illegal sex, and possession and production of child pornography. In March 2024, Wallace met a 15-year-old girl in Binghamton, he subjected the Minor Victim to escalating physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, forced her to disguise her appearance by dyeing her hair and wearing a mask, gave the Minor Victim methamphetamine and marijuana, & created child pornography of the Minor Victim, in Binghamton, which was found on his phone. Wallace later brought the victim across State Lines and then back to his Bronx apartment where he assaulted & raped her, she escaped the apartment & contacted police. Wallace faces multiple lengthy jail terms for the convictions.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the award of more than $32 million to help local governments enhance safety on their roads by reducing instances of vehicles inadvertently straying from their lanes and lessening the severity of crashes. The funding is part of the State DOT's “Safe System” approach toward zero highway deaths and will support roadway improvements; Locally, in Otsego County, the Towns of Hartwick and Middlefield, will receive $700,000 to install guide rail on County Road 11. In New York State, 44 percent of crash fatalities occur when a vehicle departs from its lane.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the indictment of 18 year old James Tinebra of Plainview, A Delaware County Grand Jury indicted Tinebra for Burglary & Grand Larceny for stealing a State Police Vehicle from a repair shop in Davenport on November 5th at about 3:45 AM. Tinebra was located later in the day by the Schodack Police Department in Rensselaer County, where he is also facing separate charges.

Last week was Crash Responder Safety Week, and State Troopers joined the State DOT to focus on Move Over Law violations. Troopers from the Troop C Traffic Incident Management Unit teamed up with DOT crews on I-81 in Cortland County and I-88 in the town of Otego. On November 20th, Troopers issued 30 tickets on I-81 in Cortland County and 9 tickets on I-88 in the town of Otego, on November 21, Troopers issued 39 tickets on I-81 in Cortland County. New York State implemented the Move Over Law in 2010 to reduce crashes involving emergency responders stopped along the roadway. The law later expanded to include hazard vehicles, tow trucks, and highway workers. In 2023, the law expanded again, requiring drivers to slow down and move over for any vehicle stopped on the roadway.

State DEC announced more than $1.72 million in grants to 6 land trusts for 9 projects that help conserve local forests. The land trusts will purchase new conservation easements that will protect air and water quality, preserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity, support sustainable forest management, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Locally, the Otsego Land Trust, will get $54,250 to purchase a conservation easement on the 41-acre Burr Forest property in the town of Westford, adjacent to Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park. The easement property is 90 percent forested, and includes wetlands and hemlock stands, along with large concentrations of native plants.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that $97.4 million in new funding is available for active transportation-related projects and programs that support the advancement of healthy lifestyles across New York State. Local Governments, Transit Agencies, Public Land Agencies, Tribal Governments are eligible, the State Department of Transportation will be accepting applications for this funding opportunity through March 12th 2026. State Police have identified the woman who drive into a pong in Richfield Springs earlier this week as 39 year old Rachel Galesky of Richfield Springs. State Police were dispatched Tuesday Morning to the site of a pond at Skinner Road & US Route 20 after a passerby called 911 after observing what appeared to be a portion of a vehicle submerged in the pond. Troopers located the vehicle and discovered Galesky inside, they determined that she failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the pond, The investigation is continuing.

An 18-year-old male from Plainview is in custody after stealing a marked New York State Police patrol vehicle. Wednesday morning, Oneonta Troopers were notified of a burglary that occurred overnight at Accurate Auto and Truck Repair LLC in Davenport, where a State Police patrol vehicle that had been undergoing service & was taken from the premises. No weapons were inside the car at the time it was taken. The vehicle was located on I- 90 in Schodack, Rensselaer County, Troopers located the 18-year-old male inside and took him into custody without incident. The individual was arraigned in the Town of Schodack Court and charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, He was turned over to investigators from Troop C, where he was additionally charged with Burglary and Grand Larceny, The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police responded to Wednesday afternoon to State Highway 17 in the town of Hancock for a report of a crash in a work zone. An investigation revealed that a Toyota Corolla, operated by 90 year old Mohamed Rawoof of Mahwah, New Jersey struck a State DOT skid steer operated by a DOT employee in the left lane of a marked construction zone. Both Rawoof and the DOT employee were transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police responded to I-88 in Afton for a crash involving a Department of Transportation vehicle and a pick-up truck. Troopers learned that a crew of 7 DOT workers were completing pothole repairs along the east bound lanes of I-88, an attenuator truck in the right lane warned drivers that there was roadwork ahead and that the right lane was closed, while a second attenuator truck was in the vicinity of the crew members. A Pick-up truck pulling an enclosed trailer with picnic tables crashed into rear of the second attenuator truck, The DOT worker that was operating the attenuator and the 20-year-old operator of the pick-up truck were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Both eastbound lanes were closed during the removal of the vehicles. Troopers were assisted by Afton Fire, Bainbridge Fire, Sidney Ambulance.

State Police responded to South Hall of the SUNY Morrisville Campus Monday afternoon at 3:45 pm, they found a 20-year-old male, who was not a student, with a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, No other injuries were reported and a suspect has not been located, the investigation is continuing. Normal class schedules resumed this morning.

54 year old Donald Lane of Oneonta, was arrested Sunday for Sex Offender Failure to Update Change of Address following an investigation in to a sex offender failing to abide by restrictions by the State Sex Offender Registry. Lane is a level 2 sex offender, he failed to make the proper notifications regarding an address change, he also had a prior conviction of the failing to update the Sex Offender Registry, he was located in the City of Oneonta by deputies and taken in to custody following a brief foot pursuit, he was lodged him in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to Arraignment.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $135 million was made available to help communities across the State affordably undertake critical water and sewer infrastructure improvement projects. Locally, the City of Oneonta will receive $5.3 million in federal grant and low-cost financing for improvements at the wastewater treatment plant.

40 year old Joseph Brady of Binghamton was convicted in Broome County Court of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he entered his plea of guilty Wednesday in Broome County Court in exchange for an 8 year sentence in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Brady was arrested on June 9, by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit following an investigation, Sentencing is scheduled for January 29, 2026, in Broome County Court.

State Forest Rangers responded to Hancock Sunday following the report of 2 hikers from Brooklyn who were lost off trail at Jensen’s Ledges. Forest Rangers spoke with the lost individuals by phone and were able to obtain their coordinates. Rangers found the hikers in about 2 hours Sunday evening and assisted them back to their vehicle. Officials remind hikers that before entering the backcountry, visit the DEC's Hike Smart NY, Adirondack Backcountry Information, and Catskill Backcountry Information webpages for more information. The State DOT will be closing Bridge 10, Sherwood Road over the West Branch of the Delaware River in the town of Delhi, to through traffic today starting at 9:00 AM to inspect the bridge. The bridge will be re-opened as soon as inspection is complete. The traveling public should use alternate routes.

Bradley Law of Harpursville has officially been granted parole, following a recent hearing by the State Parole Board, he was convicted of criminal possession of a firearm and attempted leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident after striking & killing 13-year-old Brennan Loveless while he was riding a bicycle in Sanitaria Springs on January 1st, 2023, and for fleeing the scene, Law also reported that he hit a deer with his truck the next day to cover up the damage to his truck from the Loveless incident. Law was also charged following an unrelated domestic dispute, he was sentenced to 2 2/3 to to 8 years in prison, and will be released to parole supervision in January.

A Trial of 3 former State Corrections officer accused of participating in the killing of Robert Brooks last December in the Marcy Correctional Facility concluded today. David Kingsley was found guilty of 2nd degree murder & 1st degree Manslaughter, however Nicholas Kieffer & Matthew Galliher were was found not guilty for Murder, Manslaughter, Gang Assault, Kinglsey faces sentencing on December 15th, He faces 25 years to life in prison.

New York's Republican State Committee on Friday suspended a Young Republican organization following the release of a group chat that included jokes about rape and flippant commentary on gas chambers. New York's Republican committee said its leaders had voted unanimously to suspend the authorization of the New York State Young Republicans to operate at a statewide level.

State Police responded to a 3 vehicle crash on State Route 12 in the town of Greene, where a Mazda driven by 22 year old Makayla Cummings of Utica, was traveling south on State Route 12, when she crossed into the opposing lane, striking a Ford Focus head-on, driven by 44 year old Angel Kiekel of Nineveh. Cummings continued off the roadway and struck a parked Honda Civic, then she struck the exterior of a residence. Cummings & Keikel were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Cummings faces charges for the incident.

30 year old Karl Calhoun pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Rape & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On August 24th, Calhoun forcibly attacked a female, struck her multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing, she was able to resist the attack and escape to safety, the incident was captured on video surveillance, on September 5th, Vestal Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Calhoun, a search uncovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine containing 9 live rounds, Calhoun will be sentenced to 10 years in state prison for Attempted Rape and 7 years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the sentences will run concurrently, and Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and an Order of Protection will remain in effect.

State Police are reminding the public to be aware of phone scams that tell a victim to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold bars to “protect their assets”. Scammers will call asking if the victim made a large purchase on Amazon, if they did not, the caller is told that their identity and social security number have been stolen, they are “transferred” to someone who claims to be from a credit union or a bank and advises that the victim to withdraw their money or purchase gold bars so that it can be held for “safe keeping”. The scammers will send a “courier” to collect the money or gold bars. State Police BCI announced the arrest of 41 year old Akash Thakkar of Hiawatha, New Jersey for Grand Larceny for a June 2024 larceny where scammers swindled $500,000 in gold bars, Troopers were able to identify Thakkar as the man who picked up the gold bars, he was processed & was turned over to the Tompkins County Jail for Arraignment.

Delhi Police Department arrested 23 year old Xavier Calderon of New City on 2 counts of Criminal Trespass, on September 27th Calderon allegedly broke into a residence and when confronted by the occupants, claimed he was retrieving property he had left there the previous night, the investigation revealed that Calderon had been inside the residence on September 26, when the tenants were away, and that he had slept in one of the bedrooms without permission. The tenants reported that they do not know Calderon and had never authorized him to be inside the home. Calderon was taken into custody, was processed and transported to for arraignment, where a Temporary Order of Protection was issued.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident on I-81 in the City of Binghamton Thursday morning. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and emergency personnel responded to a 3-car accident on I-81 south at the off ramp of Exit 12, they found a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver entrapped in the vehicle, they attempted to extinguish the flames, the U-Haul operator was extricated and transported to Wilson Medical Center, but was was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The U-Haul was towing a vehicle, after merging from Route 17 and was approaching the off ramp of Exit 12 when an SUV attempted to merge across several lanes and struck the U-Haul, causing the operator to lose control and collide with a DOT attenuator truck. The identity of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The State DOT announced that I-88 westbound will be closed near Exit 8 in Bainbridge for pavement repairs, today from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Drivers should follow the posted detours, utilizing the off-ramp at Exit 8, then crossing State Route 206 to the ensuing on-ramp, back onto Interstate 88 westbound. Flaggers will be stationed at the intersection to control traffic.

State Police issued 109 tickets during a four-hour long Operation Hard Hat detail within a work zone on Interstate 81 in the town of Chenango Thursday. The detail was a combined effort with the State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department, Crews from the DOT were repairing the bridge rail over Front Street. The area is a 55mph zone and just the left lane was closed, while two others were still open to accommodate traffic. Troopers charged 27 for using cell phones while driving, 36 for speeding, 27 for no seat belt, 19 other cvarious tickets were issued.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Department of Health & The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee will host a Child Car Seat Safety Check Saturday at the Oneonta Home Depot on State Highway 28 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Certified Technicians will make sure that seats are installed properly & answer questionb particicpants in the Saturday event.

State Police at Troop C have scheduled more child’s car seat safety checks, one on August 4, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Windsor Diner, August 6, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at The Pantheon on State Route 79 in Harpursville, State Police are teaming up with the Broome County District Attorney’s Office at these events, they will be hosting a bike helmet give away. The State Comptroller's Office of Unclaimed Funds returns over $2 million in lost money every day, which can come from utility deposits, trust funds, old bank accounts, uncashed checks or unused gift cards. To further assist individuals in claiming their lost funds, staff members will attend community events to provide information and assistance with the search process, including on August 7th from 9:30 am. to 4:00 pm. with the Chenango County Office of the Aging tent at the Chenango County Fair Grounds in Norwich. Troopers from the Troop “C” Traffic Incident Management Unit partnered with the DOT for an Operation Hard Hat enforcement detail on I-86/State Route 17 east where crews were completing bridge work in the town of Vestal. State Police issued 54 total citations, 20 for using cellphones, 16 for speeding, 11 for no seat-belt, 2 for improper child restraints.

State tax receipts totaled $33.2 billion through the first quarter of State Fiscal Year, about $580.5 million higher than the most recent Division of the Budget estimates. State tax collections were also $3.3 billion higher than last year's 1st quarter, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. State Police arrested 34 year old Kyle Packer of Oneonta on an arrest warrant for Burglary, Criminal Contempt, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Obstructing Governmental Administration. On June 12, Packer was involved in a domestic dispute in Edmeston where he violated an order of protection, unlawfully entered a home and struck a victim & left prior to the Trooper’s arrival. Troopers located Packer on June 24 in the town of New Berlin, where he fled on tractor into a wooded area. A Trooper observed Packer Tuesday in the town of Columbia, he was taken into custody and was processed then transported to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment.

The State Department of Transportation announced the exit 8 off-ramp from Interstate 88 West to State Route 206 in Bainbridge will be closed today for pavement repairs, from 8 am. to 2 pm. Drivers should follow the posted detour route using Exit 9, State Route 8 Northbound to State Route 7 Westbound to State Route 206.
