41 year old Franklin Gentry of Utica was arrested by Norwich Police Friday for Attempted Murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in Utica on February 15th. U.S. Marshals tracked gentry to Norwich, they coordinated with Norwich Police, Gentry was found Friday at West Main & Guernsey Street in Norwich at around 2:00 PM. Gentry was brought back to Utica by US Marshalls & faces court action On the attempted Murder charge, additional charges are anticipated.

The State DMV is urging New York Vehicle Owners to check their vehicles for safety recalls as part of Vehicle Safety Recalls Week this week through March 8th. State Department of Motor Vehicles officials stated that 1 out of every 5 cars on the road had an open recall, which amounts to about 2 million vehicles in New York, go to dmv.ny.gov to see if your vehicle has a recall.
The State DEC & Area Fire Departments announced that the annual Burn Ban will be from March 16th to May 14th this year. Open Burning of brush or debris is prohibited during that time-frame, to prevent wildfires & grass fires during the traditional driest time of the year.

State Police responded to a 3 vehicle crash on State Route 12 in the town of Greene, where a Mazda driven by 22 year old Makayla Cummings of Utica, was traveling south on State Route 12, when she crossed into the opposing lane, striking a Ford Focus head-on, driven by 44 year old Angel Kiekel of Nineveh. Cummings continued off the roadway and struck a parked Honda Civic, then she struck the exterior of a residence. Cummings & Keikel were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Cummings faces charges for the incident.

30 year old Karl Calhoun pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Rape & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On August 24th, Calhoun forcibly attacked a female, struck her multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing, she was able to resist the attack and escape to safety, the incident was captured on video surveillance, on September 5th, Vestal Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Calhoun, a search uncovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine containing 9 live rounds, Calhoun will be sentenced to 10 years in state prison for Attempted Rape and 7 years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the sentences will run concurrently, and Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and an Order of Protection will remain in effect.
State Police are reminding the public to be aware of phone scams that tell a victim to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold bars to “protect their assets”. Scammers will call asking if the victim made a large purchase on Amazon, if they did not, the caller is told that their identity and social security number have been stolen, they are “transferred” to someone who claims to be from a credit union or a bank and advises that the victim to withdraw their money or purchase gold bars so that it can be held for “safe keeping”. The scammers will send a “courier” to collect the money or gold bars. State Police BCI announced the arrest of 41 year old Akash Thakkar of Hiawatha, New Jersey for Grand Larceny for a June 2024 larceny where scammers swindled $500,000 in gold bars, Troopers were able to identify Thakkar as the man who picked up the gold bars, he was processed & was turned over to the Tompkins County Jail for Arraignment.

The tenants reported that they do not know Calderon and had never authorized him to be inside the home. Calderon was taken into custody, was processed and transported to for arraignment, where a Temporary Order of Protection was issued.

The State Department of Health is urging eligible New Yorkers to get the seasonal flu vaccine, following new federal statistics showing severe complications in children, last year there were 26 pediatric influenza-associated deaths reported statewide. Pediatric flu deaths have been increasing year over year from 3 deaths in the 2021-22 season, up to last year's 26, More information about the influenza vaccine is available at health.ny.gov.

The Chenango County Department of Public works will close County Road 39 between Old Gifford Road and State Route 206 in Bainbridge, starting Tuesday for the replacement of a large culvert. The road closure is expected to last 1 to 3 days, depending on weather conditions.

State Police arrested 37 year old Christopher Banks of Nineveh for Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. A search warrant was executed on April 4th, Banks was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that 38 year old Mark Banks of Nineveh sexually abused a dairy cow while employed at a farm in the town of Colesville. Banks was charged with Sexual Misconduct, both were issued appearance tickets to the Colesville Town Court on April 24th.

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department Plastic Film Recycling Challenge ends today. Participating schools collected film plastics such as Grocery Bags, Bread bags, Bubble wrap, The winner of the each division will receive an ice cream social event soon, last year over 6 tons of the plastics were diverted out of the waste stream in otsego county.
Utica University has announced its commencement speaker for the undergraduate ceremony in 2025 will be Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of Chobani, Ulukaya will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Utica University, he emigrated from his native Turkey in 1994 to the US, he purchased a closed factory in Edmeston in 2007 with a small business loan, Chobani became he biggest seller of Greek Yogurt in the world by 2012. The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that Patrick Proefriedt of Colesville, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Murder in Broome County Court. On June 26th, 2023, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office was called to 2208 Route 41 in the Town of Colesville for a report of a shooting, it was discovered that Proefriedt had shot his wife and newborn daughter with a crossbow. The child was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was released from the hospital later that day with non-life-threatening injuries, Proefiedt faces a sentence up to life in prison when sentenced at a later date.
State Police at Norwich were dispatched by the Chenango County 911 Center to State Route 12 in Oxford for a report of a vehicle on fire at about 1:20 AM Saturday. When Troopers arrived on scene, members of the Oxford Fire Department were extinguishing the fire and discovered the driver of the vehicle was deceased. An investigation determined that while northbound on State Route 12, the Nissan SUV went off the roadway, struck a guiderail then hit a tree and caught on fire. The driver and only occupant, is identified as 25 year old Christopher Ojuro of New Hartford.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Shawn Taylor of Utica on a variety of drug charges following a a month-long investigation into drug sales, Taylor is accused of traveling to Chenango County from Utica and selling Crack Cocaine. On January 17th, 2025 a search warrant was executed in the City of Norwich on Taylor and his vehicle, a quantity of packaged Crack Cocaine was located. Taylor was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for processing. Taylor is currently being held without bail at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

Norwich Police Department, in conjunction with New York State Parole concluded an investigation into the sale of narcotics, counterfeit currency and weapons. 28 year old Aaron Johnson of Norwich is charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument, Possession of a Narcotic Drug with intent to sell (Fentanyl), Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell (Methamphetamine) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Police were able to locate quantities of Cocaine, Methamphetamine and Fentanyl, plus counterfeit U.S. Currency. Johnson was held without bail, pending further court proceedings.

State Police, fire and emergency responders were dispatched to a 1-vehicle crash in the town of Andes. An investigation at the scene determined that a vehicle was traveling south on Fall Clove Road when it exited the roadway, striking a tree head-on. The operator, 43 year old Harland Dye of Delancey and the passenger, 34 year old Kate Cornelius-Schecter of Brooklyn, were transported to O’Connor Hospital, Dye was pronounced deceased at the hospital, Cornelius-Shecter was transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.
State Police arrested 52 year old John Standish of Owego for multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon, after Investigators discovered that Standish was manufacturing ghost guns and was in possession of firearms that are not NY SAFE ACT complaint, high-capacity magazines and silencers and that Standish does not possess a pistol permit and cannot lawfully possess a firearm. Investigators learned that Standish was using 3D printers to illegally make parts for the ghost guns. Standish was arraigned & faces future court action.
18 year old John Koscinski of Utica was found safe, he was reported missing from SUNY Cobleskill, the State Division of Criminal Justice reported that Koscinski had been missing since Wednesday.

An investigation at the scene determined that a 42-year-old male from Utica was operating an SYV when he crashed, he was pronounced deceased on scene. The roadway reopened shortly after 10:00 AM, the name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October 2024. The State's unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in October 2024. Locally, Chenango County had 2.8% unemployment, Delaware County 3.2% and Otsego County 3% in October.
The Clean Slate Act went into effect in New York State Saturday, which will automatically seal an individual’s New York State criminal records. The law states that Convictions under New York state law are eligible for sealing, Except for Sex crimes, Sexually violent offenses or class “A” felonies with the exception of drug-related convictions. The law does not apply to federal crimes or convictions in other states. For the record to be sealed, a specific period has to pass, 3 years for a misdemeanor & 8 years for a non”A” felony. Police stated that a 56 year old woman from Sherburne veered into the opposing lane & sideswiped a tractor trailer driven by an unidentified man from Westerlo. The woman was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to a Utica Hospital with serious injuries the truck driver was not injured despite hitting a utility pole. The road was closed for several hours for the clean up & accident reconstruction efforts & for the repair of downed power lines. the investigation is continuing.

State Police at Sidney arrested 66 year old Vickie Wright of Unadilla for felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle as well as Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. A traffic stop was initiated on Main Street in Unadilla, Wright failed Field Sobriety Tests, she was issued appearance tickets to the Unadilla Town Court on November 12, and released to a sober third party.

Delaware County Sheriff's deputies located a vehicle that was related to a 911 call and was being searched for by the Delhi Police Department. The driver, Charles Dieterich of Grand Gorge, was on parole at the time and he was found to be in possession of fentanyl, meth, buprenorphine, and cocaine. Utica Police arrested a Connecticut couple following Friday morning's robbery at the Bank of Utica on Genesee Street in downtown Utica. Police arrested 60-year-old James Perkins and 42-year-old Christy Roper, both of Hamden, Connecticut. after the Friday Morning heist, a search warrant was issued and following the search, proceeds from the robbery along with a large quantity of narcotics was located. Perkins & Roper were charged with Robbery, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, The investigation is continuing.

Law Enforcement from all over attended the funeral for Onondaga County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Hoosock, was being held today in Syracuse, Lieutenant Hoosock was killed by gunfire along with Syracuse Police officer Michael Jensen on April 14th in Liverpool. Jensen's Funeral was held in his hometown of Rome on Saturday. The suspect accused of shooting the officers 33 year old Christopher Murphy was also killed.

14 individuals were arrested on charges ranging from graffiti, stealing a law enforcement body camera and disorderly conduct to obstruction and resisting arrest at the 4th annual “Smoke Weed Outside the Binghamton Police Station” event in downtown Binghamton. On Saturday, members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office assisted Binghamton Police Department in ensuring a safe public gathering on Hawley Street in front of Government Plaza. Some attendees began scrawling graffiti, blocking the flow of traffic on Hawley Street, Police began arresting participants for Obstructing Government Administration, disorderly conduct, petty larceny for stealing a law enforcement body camera and resisting arrest, all were processed and released on appearance tickets for the City of Binghamton Court.

The Utica Police Department has disclosed the identities of the deceased individuals involved in the Kingston Road incident Tuesday night. State Police will participate in a special traffic enforcement initiative to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors through Thanksgiving weekend. The special traffic enforcement period runs from Wednesday through Sunday, and will focus on impaired and distracted driving as well as speeding and the Move Over Law. Temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended through 6:00 am on Monday, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers for emergency repairs.
The State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for October. The State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.0% in September to 4.2% in October , locally, Chenango County had 3.2%, Delaware County 3.7% and Otsego County 3.4% in October.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and State Police announced the arrest of Utica City School District Superintendent Bruce Karam and the former Utica Mayor and School Board President Louis LaPolla. Karam was using school money and resources to send election mailers in support of school board candidates that he favored and who determined his contract, salary and authority. He also is accused of using school resources to send invitations for a non-school related fundraiser for a purported charity run by LaPolla. LaPolla was allegedly aware that school resources were being used on his behalf. Karam also allegedly tried to cover up his actions by attempting to persuade school district employees to lie that the resources being used for a valid purpose.

Thayer admitted he believed the boy was 14, the boy was actually a fictitious entity controlled by an organization dedicated to catching sexual predators, Judge Hubbard sentenced him to a 3-year term of probation supervision, which will include specific sex offender terms and conditions.

The Chenango County Health Department has lifted the BOIL WATER ORDER issued for the Village of Afton, issued Saturday. An investigation began in early July after Troopers learned that Brick accepted money from a victim in April for 3 separate contracting jobs for over $24,000, but Brick did not complete the contracting work at 1 location and didn’t start work or purchase materials for the other 2 properties. Brick was processed & was transported to the Chenango County Jail for arraignment.
State Police at Richfield Springs were dispatched to assist the Richfield Fire Department with a fire in a 2nd-floor bathroom at Richfield Springs Central School. An investigation revealed that a 15-year-old male intentionally lit a soap dispenser on fire, which caused property damage only. No injuries were reported. The juvenile was charged with 2nd degree Arson.

31 year old Thomas Harris of Unadilla, pleaded guilty to 4th degree Arson, on June 4, 2022, State Police responded to reports of a structure fire in the Town of Sidney. Upon arrival, the Troopers discovered several broken and intact beer bottles, some of which contained gasoline, a victim stated that Harris threw the bottles, starting the fire. The Bottles were tested, the results confirmed the presence of Harris’ DNA on the bottles. Harris will be sentenced to five years of felony probation supervision when sentenced at a later date.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 31 year old Derek Wignall of Hancock, pleaded guilty to Criminal Contempt. Wignall violated an Order of Protection by contacting the protected party while incarcerated on an unrelated matter, he was placed back into custody upon discovery of the violation of the Order of Protection. Judge Rosa ordered a pre-sentence investigation to be undertaken by the Delaware County Probation Department. If found to be appropriate, Wignall will be placed on probation supervision for a five-year term.

Binghamton Police Department announced the names of the couple who were found after a fire was extinguished at 56 Howard Avenue. The investigation revealed that 64-year-old Patrick Angeline shot his wife, 62 year old Wanda Angeline, multiple times before starting the fire. He later shot himself inside of the home. Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 43 year old Nicholas Marte of Mount Upton pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, in Delaware County Court Monday. On April 6, 2022, Hancock Police responded to a 911 call, Marte was found passed out in his vehicle at the Valero Parking lot, police found multiple used needles and several glassine envelopes containing heroin. Marte pleaded guilty to the Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, he will be sentenced to a 5-year term of probation with the special condition that he successfully completes a Drug Treatment Court Program, if he fails to complete the program or violates the terms of his probation, he will be re-sentenced to state prison.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Alexis Damulis of Burlington following a traffic stop on February 7th in the Town of Edmeston. Damulis was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a suspended or revoked registration, Failure to comply & Driving on the shoulder among other charges, Damulis is accused of failing to stop for police, she was taken into custody after pulling into a driveway, she faces court action in the Town of Edmeston court at a later date.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Tristan Buss of Utica following a traffic stop on February 2, 2023 in the Town of Edmeston. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 48 year old Billie Vonkrusze of Utica for criminal possession of a controlled substance and promoting prison contraband, while being booked into the Jail on separate charges. Vonkrusze was returned to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.
State Police investigated a tractor trailer rollover accident early Tuesday morning, that spilled medical supplies on State Route 17 between Hancock & Deposit. Clean up took about 2 hours, no injuries were reported, so far the driver has not been ticketed, the investigation is ongoing.

The City of Oneonta Police Department has arrested 29 year old Elijah Vergari of Oneonta in connection with the NBT bank robbery that occurred at 1 Wall Street in the City of Oneonta on December 29th. An indictment was handed down by a Grand Jury for the arrest of Vergari, Vergari was delivered to the Otsego County Court Monday, he was arraigned for 3rd degree Robbery, Due to the existence of pending felony charges in Delaware County, bail was set for $10,000 cash bail and he was remanded to the custody of the Otsego County Sheriff. The Oneonta Police Department worked in conjunction with the New York State Police Forensic ID unit, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, and NBT bank security services.
An Oneonta man died in a two-car crash on Route 365 in Westmoreland late Sunday night. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office stated that 20-year-old Joshua Parker of Utica, was driving westbound on Route 365 when he started to have car trouble and put his flashers on while trying to make it to a gas station, Parker's vehicle was hit from behind by 40-year-old Lance Johnson of Oneonta, who was transporting medical test samples to a lab. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Parker was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center to be treated for injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening. The investigation is ongoing.

Sabines was charged with 2nd degree Murder, Concealment of a Human Corpse and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Sabines was arrested following an investigation into the disappearance of Jesse Donlin, formerly of Sidney, Unadilla and Afton locally. Donlin was reported missing in September of 2019 after failing to appear for a court appearance in Utica, the investigation ultimately led to Sabines arrest. Sabines was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond pending future court action.

On Monday Morning, an officer from the Walton Police Department was dispatched to a mental health call on Griswold Street, the officer made contact with Weeden, who pointed what was believed to be a gun at the officer, the officer retreated, Weeden followed & ignored multiple commands to drop his weapon, he again pointed the suspected gun at the officer, who fired his weapon and struck Weeden. The officer called for EMS and rendered emergency aid, Weeden was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is continuing.

Sidney Police Department located a man Monday who was wanted in the State of Arkansas. 34 year old Robert Herbert was arrested on a violation of parole warrant issued from the State of Arkansas. He was arraigned virtually as a fugitive from justice and remanded to the Delaware County Jail to await extradition to Arkansas.
State Police announced that 3 men, including State Trooper Kevin Krause worked as a team to try to save a bald eagle on I-88 in Sidney, after it was hit by a side view mirror of a car. The unidentified driver did attempt to avoid the bird and did stop; the eagle was taken by the New York State ENCON Officer to a Wildlife Center. State Police told WCDO News today that the Wildlife Center did everything they could, including emergency surgery, but unfortunately, the eagle did not make it.

Utica Police have arrested 32 year old Vanessa Armstead of Buffalo for criminal possession of stolen property, criminal trespass, burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief, after allegedly stealing a Kunkel Ambulance, which ended up in the Irondequoit Bay near Rochester Sunday afternoon. Armstead was involved in a separate crash on the Thruway on Saturday, and was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment, after she was released, she went to Union Station in Utica, but never got on a train, she is accused of stealing the ambulance from the station on Catherine Street Sunday morning, she drove to Victor New York & crashed the ambulance into the bay. Armstead was rescued from the water and taken to shore; she was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Monroe County jail on $3,500 bail.

Kunkel Ambulance Service alerted Utica Police, they alerted State Police the ambulance was heading west on the Thruway, a Monroe County scuba team was able to pull the ambulance up from the water just after 5:00 PM Sunday, The woman was rescued shortly after the ambulance went into the bay, She was taken into custody, her name has not been released & The investigation is continuing.
On Sunday, the Sidney Police Department responded to a domestic dispute on Riverview Drive, the officer entered the home & was attacked by a 17 year old male. The officer was able to draw his Taser and after warning was forced to use it when the 17 year old male appeared to charge the officer a 2nd time. The 17 year old male was then taken into custody without any further incident, the officer was not injured and the 17 year old male was evaluated by EMS at the scene and released. The 17 year old male was charged with Harassment & was released on an appearance ticket to appear in Sidney court at a later date.

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested 55 year old Ralph Smith of Brisben for the felony Sexual Abuse; he is accused of subjecting a child less than 13 years of age to sexual contact, in the Town of Greene.
