The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.
37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Samuel Layton of New Lisbon, for 3 counts of Reckless Endangerment, following an investigation into a shots fired complaint in the Town of Exeter. Layton is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in the direction of an occupied residence with a family of 3 inside, resulting in a rifle round impacting through the residence, he was located, arrested, processed, and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Centralized Arraignment

Oneonta Firefighters responded this morning to a reported structure fire at 525 Main Street at the Oneonta veterinary Hospital. 3 on-duty firefighters arrived within minutes to find fire rapidly extending up the exterior wall of the building. Crews knocked down the fire, checked for extension, and searched the building to ensure the fire had not spread into the structure, off duty Firefighters were called back to assist.

State Police responded to a report of a child in distress at a swimming pool at the Binghamton Country Club on Robinson Hill Road. Upon the Troopers’ arrival, bystanders and lifeguards had already initiated lifesaving measures for an unresponsive 11-year-old boy, Troopers assisted in those efforts until the child was transported by ambulance to Wilson Medical Center and subsequently flown to Upstate University Hospital, where the child passed away. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office following further examination. No foul play is suspected at this time.

Norwich Police Department executed a search warrant at 41 Cortland Street following an investigation into the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics. 39 year old Shawn Utter of Norwich, & 24 year old Brittany Cox were charged with several Counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Nuisance & Conspiracy, Officers seized cash from suspected drug sales, drug measuring equipment, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, various pills, & weapons, The Village of Sidney Police Department assisted on scene with their drug detecting K9 unit, Utter was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending further proceedings. Cox was processed and arraigned in Norwich City Court, where she was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.
The FBI & the Johnson City Police Department arrested 69 year old Robert Randesi of Johnson City on federal drug & weapons charges after the execution of search warrant at a warehouse style building in Johnson City. Officers located over 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, quantities of marijuana, approximately $24,000 in cash, several firearms including AR-15 style rifles, ghost guns, firearm parts and ammunition, plus machinist tools and metal fabricating equipment consistent with tools used to construct or mill firearms & their parts. Randesi is currently in the Broome County Jail, He faces court action for both state and federal charges.
The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Grand Larceny, after an investigation revealed that Lazarati was working with the Assigned Counsel Program in Chenango County, Lazarati submitted duplicate billing to Chenango County for the same legal services and accepted payment. Chenango County sustained a financial loss of approximately $4,700. Lazarati was arrested was arrested, and was turned over to members of Troop C, he was processed & then transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The National Weather Service announced that their survey teams confirmed 2 tornadoes Thursday, an EF-1 just south of Rock Stream in Yates County & an EF-0 near Cortland, other locations were surveyed in Cortland County, though it was determined that strong winds were the cause of damage east of where the tornado lifted.

Locally, significant damage was reported where a roof was torn from a barn on County Road 14 in the Village of Earlville. In Smyrna, a tree came down on a house. The National Weather Service Investigators are canvassing the region today, more results are expected to be released in the coming days.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies attempted to stop a motor vehicle on State Highway 10 in the Stamford/Hobart area, 29-year-old Wesley Eignor of Stamford failed to stop and continued on, eventually stopping in a parking lot, Eignor was taken into custody, he attempted to fight the Deputies, he was charged with Attempted Assault, 2 counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration, plus Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle as well as for multiple vehicle and traffic offenses, Eignor was processed at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where he was arraigned and held on bail.

Deputies observed a vehicle being operated in the dark with no operable lights, the driver was a 16-year-old juvenile, operating with a permit. The passenger was Smith, who was actively on Probation, was intoxicated and was in possession of an open container and narcotics. Smith was arrested for 1 count each of Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Consumption of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, & several traffic violations, Smith was processed and released on appearance tickets.

NYSEG reported a high of over 14,400 customers without power across the western Counties of the state, following strong thunderstorms earlier today, crews have been working to restore power as soon as possible, much of the area was also under a Tornado watch, which expired at 3:00 PM, only about 250 NYSEG customers lost power in the Tri-County region.

An investigation determined that the vehicles crashed while entering a 1 lane only construction zone, Troopers administered Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which indicated impairment, Hertzog was arrested, his B.A.C was .14%, he was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Chenango Town Court on July 28.

41 year old Alex Scrivani of Claryville pleaded guilty to Criminal Mischief in Delaware County Court On May 11, a deputy was flagged down by multiple individuals reporting a male that was pulling on door handles of multiple residences and going into a local business, the Deputy located Scrivani, who was uncooperative, it was determined that Scrivani went into a building and damaged a screen door, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on June 30th.

The Sidney Police Department reports that on Saturday officers became aware of multiple incidents of graffiti vandalism affecting both Village property and private property within the Village of Sidney. The graffiti consisted of derogatory phrases directed at President Donald Trump and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officers apprehended 3 individuals, arrested were 19 year old Mara Van Kingsley of Sidney, 21 year old Harley Riglioni of Unadilla, & 20 year old Saaniah Small of Afton, for 1 count each of Criminal Mischief, Making Graffiti, Conspiracy & Possession of Graffiti Instruments, All 3 defendants were processed by the Sidney Police Department and transported to the Delaware County Court for arraignment, the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as further information becomes available.
The Governor's Office announced that the administration has reached a tentative contract agreement with the Public Employees Federation for a 5-year term running until April 1, 2031. The agreement is subject to ratification by union membership, which includes approximately 60,000 New York State employees.
The Governor's Office announced that funding is available from the new $10 million New York PLATES capital grant program, to support food banks and other organizations that provide emergency food assistance in building the modern facilities, equipment, and infrastructure needed to serve more families across the state. The application period for grant will open on July 8th and applications must be submitted by August 20th, Awards are expected to be announced no earlier than October 20th.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $82.2 million has been awarded through the New York State Council on the Arts’ Capital Projects Fund to support 132 projects in every region of the state. This investment in non-profit arts and cultural organizations across New York supports crucial building renovations, accessibility improvements and new spaces for creative and cultural work. Awards were given in all 10 regions of New York State, with 77 percent of the grants awarded to organizations with budgets under $3 million. A Mid-Sized Capital Improvement Grants was awarded to the Chenango County Historical Society to help replace the building’s roof with a new, historically accurate slate roof.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Alex Scrivani of Claryville for Burglary & Criminal Mischief in Andes on May 11th. Deputies observed Scrivani walking along the highway, they attempted to interview him & he was uncooperative. Deputies later observed Scrivani exiting a residence and driveway, he was detained and it was determined that Scrivani was not supposed to be in the buildings or on the property. The homeowner was contacted and responded to the scene. Scrivani had forced his way into the building & his belongings were located inside, Scrivani was arrested, he was processed and arraigned and was being held on bail at the Delaware County Jail pending future court action.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital will have a Grand Opening Celebration for their new Broad Street Entrance as well as a new Orthopedics Suite next week. A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting, along with tours of the new spaces, will take place from 12:30 to 3 pm. on Thursday, May 28. The event is free and open to the public.

State Police responded Saturday Night to a 1 vehicle crash on County Highway 1 and Little Dingle Hill Road in the town of Andes. An investigation at the scene determined that 27 year old Ethan Ray Kennedy of Delhi lost control of his vehicle & went off the roadway and struck an embankment causing the vehicle to roll and land on its roof. A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Davenport, it's the 2nd confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County this year. 1 dog & 3 people were exposed to the rabid raccoon, the raccoon was sent for testing to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Laboratory. The exposed dog received a booster, the 3 people exposed have begun Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. Public Health recommends that pet owners take advantage of any of the free rabies clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets in Delaware County. The Oneonta Town Board has approved a 1 year moratorium to stop new data centers or cryptocurrency mining. The moratorium affects plans by Eco-Yotta from building a data center on County Road 9 in the Town of Oneonta, the plan requires State Approval to be implemented.

Broome County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 people in 2 separate motorcycle pursuits. On April 23, Broome County Sheriff’s Officers observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcycle operator led them on a chase throughout the area, eventually crashing on Pierce Creek Rd. 56 year old Donald Stocks of Johnson City was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and 10 additional traffic violations. In the 2nd Incident, on April 24th, Deputies observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in Binghamton, the operator failed to comply and fled into Kirkwood, Patrols terminated the pursuit, but a short time later, they found the bike disabled, 23 year old Osciano Swartz of Binghamton was taken into custody without further incident, he was charged with Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing Governmental Administration & 16 various traffic violations. Both men face court action shortly.

Lewis has been charged with 1st Degree Robbery & Assault, On Friday afternoon, Troopers were dispatched to Endicott for a report of a male who had been struck multiple times by a baseball bat following a dispute. The 48 year old unidentified victim was taken to Wilson Medical Center, where he underwent surgery & was listed in stable condition. Broome County Sheriff’s Office and numerous local fire departments responded last Wednesday to a house fire at 803 Hill Avenue in the Town of Union. Firefighters found a fully involved fire, after extinguishing the fire, a victim was located inside the residence, deceased. The deceased victim was identified as 86 year old Joyce Bassos, There were no other occupants in the residence. The cause of the fire is under investigation, The preliminary investigation does not indicate any criminal action.
The Deposit Village Board has decided to discontinue their contract with the Broome County Sheriff's Office to have a dedicate law enforcement presence in Deposit. The move comes about 6 years after the dissolution of the Deposit Police Department. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released a statement saying the\at the decision will make emergency response times in the Village unpredictable, they will respond to emergencies along with the New York State Police going forward.

Deputies located the suspicious vehicle and performed a traffic stop. The driver, 29 year old Philip Briggs of Deposit told deputies that he had picked up the passenger, 37 year old Emily Cecere of Binghamton, who claimed to have been staying at the residence, The owner confirmed that no one was authorized to stay there. Briggs was found to have a burglary tool in his possession and Cecere was found to be in possession of a credit card belonging to a deceased individual who lived at the residence. Briggs was charged with Burglary, Possession of Burglar Tools and Conspiracy, Cecere was charged with Burglary and Conspiracy, they will face court action shortly.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Lloyd Davis of Worcester, for Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, 1st & 2nd degree Rape, Sexual Abuse & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of persistent abuse, which revealed that Davis allegedly subjected minors to physical and sexual abuse over the course of several years. Davis was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed at the residence and evidence was secured. Additional search warrants were executed at a location in the Town of Maryland where additional evidence was located. Davis was processed, arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail.

State Police responded Friday night to a 1-vehicle crash on County Highway 22, in the town of Richfield Springs. 29-year-old Ashley Faubert of Ilion left the roadway and struck a tree. Residents attempted to assist her, including an EMT who initiated CPR until Otsego EMS arrived to transport Faubert to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where she was later pronounced deceased. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 44 year old John Williams of Unadilla following an investigation into a physical domestic dispute that occurred in the Town of Unadilla. Williams was found to have used physical force against the victim while in the presence of 3 children, he was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police at the residence, he was processed and turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 42 year old Michelle Nichols of Unadilla, for Driving While Intoxicated, Operate Motor Vehicle .08 of 1% or more of alcohol-1st Offense, Speed not reasonable and several other charges, following a property damage motor vehicle accident on State Highway 7 in the Town of Unadilla. Nichols was found to have operated a motor vehicle on public roadway while intoxicated by alcohol, she was taken into custody and was processed and was released with an Appearance Ticket for Town of Unadilla Court at a later date.

Sidney Police Department responded to a 3 vehicle head on collision Thursday Morning at about 10:20 AM on State Route 8 & River Street. Upon arrival, officers determined that a commercial Box Truck traveling southbound on State Route 8, was involved in a head-on collision with 2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. 1 driver sustained injuries and was transported by Lifenet to Upstate Medical University Hospital for treatment. The other two drivers were treated at Tri-Town Regional Hospital and subsequently released. The Sidney Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Sidney Fire Department, Sidney EMS, State Police & DOT, among others, The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.

51 year old Timothy Hoose of Berkshire, was sentenced today in Broome County Court following his conviction for Grand Larceny after a Jury Trial. Hoose was sentenced to a term of 2 to 6 years in New York State Prison, also the Court entered a Civil Judgment in favor of the victim. Hoose operated a business known as H&H Contracting, he entered into a construction contract with the victim to build a garage on the victim’s property, the victim paid a $15,000 down payment, Hoose illegally converted over $3,000 of those funds for other purposes unrelated to the project. Hoose further failed to provide the victim with an accounting and disposition of the trust funds despite a written request, as required by Law.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Ashton of Otego for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. The investigation revealed that Ashton, who is a level 1 sex offender, did not report a change of address to the State Sex Offender Registry within 10 days, he was arrested, processed and was released on an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date, he was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant.

The CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE arrested 42 year old Jamie Button of the Town of Plymouth for Obstruction of Governmental Administration. During an investigation of an unrelated incident on December 27th, 2025, Button provided deputies with false information into the whereabouts of a wanted subject in order to prevent the apprehension of the subject. Button was taken into custody without incident, was processed and released on an appearance ticket for the Town of Otselic Court at a later date. The Obstruction charge is punishable by up to one year in jail or three years' probation, and a $1,000 fine.

On December 30th,Deputies were notified by the Delhi Police Department that Devers was in Delhi, they located, arrested and charged Devers on the warrant, Devers was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

Alicea was held at the Delaware County Jail for Arraignment.

State Police arrested 25 year old Cagan Sodan of Greene after he was involved in a domestic dispute. The Trooper was able to restrain Sodan and take him into custody. Sodan did have an injury to his hand that he sustained from punching a window, prior to his encounter with the Trooper. Sodan has been charged with Attempted Robbery, Attempted Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief & Obstructing Governmental Administration, he was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded until his next court date on January 8, 2026.

Otsego County Office of Emergency Services reported that the Garrattsville Fire Department and nearby departments responded to a structure fire at 436 Texas Road in New Lisbon. The house was fully involved, & was a total loss, several cats & a guinea pig were believed to have died in the blaze. One tanker responding to the blaze rolled onto its side in adverse weather conditions, no injuries at the fire or the accident were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Joseph Jimenez of Walton for Assault, Menacing, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon, following an incident December 10th in Walton. Deputies were dispatched to an assault where Jimenez is accused of engaging in a physical domestic with a tenant of the household in which Jimenez allegedly produced a bladed weapon, stabbing the victim multiple times. Deputies arrested Jimenez was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where he was held pending arraignment.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Richard Garreau of Norwich On January 1st, on an Arrest Warrant and for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Members of the Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Norwich, Garreau left the scene, officers got a warrant for Garreau’s arrest, he returned to the scene and was taken into custody without incident, he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl and was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance.

On November 8th, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Barton's family, they had not had contact with Barton for more than 2 days. Deputies checked the residence, Barton was not present, the Investigation led to County Route 49 to interview Hand, who was the last known person to have contact with Mr. Barton, he directed deputies to an area behind a vacant building where Barton was deceased, his body was removed for an autopsy, the manner of death was a gunshot wound to the head. Hand was arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County Jail.

Wyble was charged with 12 counts of Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; & failure to provide proper sustenance, The arrest stems from an investigation in partnership with the Susquehanna SPCA. One pig, three geese, five cats, three chickens and 8 domestic cats were removed from the residence on Odell Lake Road in Harpersfield. Wyble was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Harpersfield Town Court on January 26, 2026.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Sunday to a burglary in the Town of Union. Deputies found the suspect, 42 year old Nicholas Sacco of Endicott lying on the ground while the homeowner stood nearby holding a snow shovel. Sacco was taken into custody, the homeowner was treated at the scene by EMS for lacerations to his arm. The homeowner reported hearing glass breaking nearby, and then from the back of his own house, he discovered Sacco attempting to break in, pushed him off his enclosed porch, Sacco attempted re-entry & the homeowner stuck Sacco repeatedly with a snow shovel. Deputies discovered that the property next door, was also burglarized. Sacco was charged with 2nd & 3rd Degree Burglary, plus 2 counts of criminal mischief, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that an inmate at the Correctional Facility was found unresponsive in his bed at approximately 6:00 AM on Monday. 54 year old William Warnock of Binghamton was found unresponsive by members of the Corrections Division, staff administered CPR and a defibrillator, but were unable to revive him. A full autopsy will be conducted by the Broome Medical Examiner, The Correctional Facility is conducting a full investigation and are cooperating with the Attorney General and the State Commission on Corrections. Warnock had entered the facility on June 27, and was serving a sentence for robbery and menacing from the City of Binghamton Police Department.

A Chenango County grand jury indicted Brian Currie for 2nd-degree burglary, 3rd-degree assault & 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The Indictments accused Currie of unlawfully entering a building on or about July 30th, in the Town of Guilford with the intent to commit a crime, assault an individual, and acted in a manner likely to be injurious to children present during the alleged break-in. Currie faces action on the Indictments in Chenango County Court at a later date.
The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced the successful completion of its annual No-Shave October and November fundraiser, in which members of the Road Patrol Division and Corrections Division raised $2,500 to support veterans in Delaware County. This year’s proceeds were donated to the Delaware County Veterans Service Agency.

The New York State Department of Health has sent out an alert, warning New Yorkers or a new scam. Health department officials stated that Telephone scammers are mimicking the Department, some New Yorkers have been receiving phone calls from people identifying themselves as a Department of Health Employee, they will ask for information about a controlled substance prescription, adding to the confusion, the caller ID may even say the caller is from the Department of Health. Officials said that the Health Department will not make such calls to private citizens, they advise people who receive these calls to hang up & alert local law enforcement.

State Troopers responded last Tuesday to State Highway 28 near County Highway 6 in the town of Middletown for a 2-vehicle crash. An investigation determined that an SUV driven by 36 year old Natasha Reed of Delhi crossed into on-coming traffic, into the path of an SUV driven by 57 year old Ernest Bilzer of Fleischmanns. Reed was pronounced deceased at Margaretville Hospital, Bilzer was transported to O’Connor Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.
Delaware County Sheriffs Office arrested 43 year old James Clark of Stamford for Promoting Prison Contraband, Last Week members of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division investigated a report from Corrections personnel in which an incarcerated individual was found to be in possession of medication that he had diverted. Clark was charged with Promoting Prison Contraband, Clark was later arraigned, where bail was set at $1,000 cash and $2,000 bond on the new charge. Clark was then remanded back to the custody of the Delaware County Jail on the original charges.

48 year old Grady Hunter of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in Broome County Court Monday, moments before jury selection was set to begin. Hunter is already serving a 10-year state prison sentence, he will serve an additional 5-year state prison term, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Hunter's latest plea stems from an incident on July 19, 2024, in Johnson City after a woman reported to police that a male subject had a gun, Hunter fired a round through his ex-girlfriend’s apartment door. Hunter is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29, 2026, his other prison sentence also came from a weapons charge. The 2 state prison sentences will run consecutively, resulting in a total sentence of 15 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of post- release supervision.

Town of Sidney Board member Kevin Greene and Engineer Darius Palmer are exploring a plan to possibly turn part of the former Acco complex into an aviation college. The State Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit seeking to permanently ban the owners of Royalty Tobacco in the Price Chopper Plaza on Route 7 in Oneonta from selling vape products in the state. The owners of the business; Eysa Sharhan and Anmed Mozed have previously faced charges of selling vaporized tobacco to underage customers, they shut down their businesses and reopened under new names 3 times, the state Department of Health has levied $195,000 in fines against the illegal smoke shop owners, the latest action could shut them down permanently.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36 year old Cody Borawa of Afton for Criminal Contempt and Stalking, for allegedly attempting to contact and interact with the victim through fake social media accounts despite an active full stay away Order of Protection stemming from a similar arrest in February. Borawa was released on an appearance ticket for the above charges and is to appear in the Town of Afton Court at a later date.
State Police arrested 34 year old Christopher Moynihan of Clinton for threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Moynihan was pardoned for his role in the January 6th 2020 insurrection in Washington, Moynihan was arrested Saturday and charged with making a terroristic threat, he was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

Delaware County Historical Association will Unveil a Women's Suffrage Marker in Delhi on Saturday Morning at 11:15 am, adjacent to the Delaware National Bank on Delhi's Main Street. The ceremony will take place during Delhi's annual Harvest Festival on Courthouse Square. The marker recognizes the importance of this location in the local effort to allow women the legal right to vote in the early years of the last century.

19 year old Jayden Aviles of Maryland, New York, appeared in Delaware County Court & pleaded guilty to 1 count of Criminally Negligent Homicide, On September 29, 2024, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched for a 1 car MVA into a house on State Route 23 in the Town of Davenport, they determined that Aviles was the driver of the vehicle and appeared to be impaired by drugs, his vehicle had hit 2 individuals in the house, with one suffering injuries and the other passing as a result of the crash. Sentencing will be held on November 18th.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office concluded the death investigation in the Town of Conklin that has been ruled a murder-suicide stemming from an ongoing family dispute. On Friday, August 22nd, 65 year old Michael Shuta of Conklin was found deceased in Montrose, Pennsylvania, Shuta’s death was ruled a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Police in Pennsylvania and New York believe that Shuta shot his nephew, 41 year old Matthew Slavetskas of Conklin, who was found dead by Officers at his Brady Hill Road residence. Detectives reported that both pistols used in the murder and the suicide were registered to Shuta.
21 year old Joseph Vanblarcom of Middletown was sentenced in Delaware County Court last week to 1 year in prison for Grand Larceny. Vanblarcom admitted that he and 2 other individuals entered City of New York property and stole a DEP owned woodchipper. VanBlarcom was placed on interim probation after his conviction, but he violated his probation when he was arrested for DWI in Ulster County, which increased his sentence to jail time.
The Chenango County Historical Society won a Technical Assistance grant, which will go for a Specialized Conservation Study for the roof of their building, the former Ward School No. 2, on Rexford Street in Norwich, Executive Director Jessica Moquin explains:

UHS Delaware Valley Hospital has been awarded a $20 million grant through the State Department of Health. The Hospital recently announced plans to build a 4-story addition & the grant will support that expansion. The new building will house primary medical care services, specialty services, physical, occupational & speech therapy and a laboratory, The Medical Neighborhood Project is expected to begin shortly, with the anticipated completion by the end of 2027.

State Police and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department responded to a residential fire at a home on Broad Street in the town of Chenango, A 26-year-old female resident had been able to get herself and two children, ages five and two, out of the home, but was unable to get to a one-year-old due to the heavy thick smoke. Troopers and Sheriff’s Deputies were able to get in through a window and get the one-year-old out of the home. The child was transported to Upstate Medical Center and passed away from the injuries sustained in the fire. Troopers are working with Broome County Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the fire.

Public Meeting #1 for the Otsego Lake Watershed Protection Plan will be held Today, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. at Glimmerglass State Park in the Lakeview Pavilion, at County Road 31, Cooperstown. The public meeting will provide an overview of the planning process and the desired outcome of the Watershed Protection Plan. A community survey will be launched during the public meeting and will be available for at least one month to gather additional input from the community. The Department of State provided funding to develop a Plan that identifies water quality threats and recommends local actions to safeguard the resource. Water quality in Otsego Lake is changing because of climate change, invasive species, and harmful inputs to the lake, the plan will identify causes of the degrading water quality and define specific actions to protect the lake and watershed.
