33year old Shawn Carman of Walton was sentenced to 2 years in State Prison to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision in Delaware County Court, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, & Possession with Intent to Sell. Carman previously pleaded guilty to in October, he was arrested on March 13, along with 3 other individuals after a traffic stop, cocaine and suspected drug packaging were seized. A Delaware County Grand Jury returned an Indictment accusing Shaun Carman of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, he was also facing unrelated charges in the Village of Walton that were resolved as part of this plea deal and sentence.


Chenango Sheriff's Office announced that they will soon be opening a Bainbridge Sub-Station. The sub-station will be located in the Bainbridge Police Department at 33 West Main Street Bainbridge. The Sheriff’s Office currently has sub-stations located in Otselic, Coventry, and Afton.


Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 3% in November compared to the same month in 2023, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.86 billion for the month, In November, County and city collections totaled $903 million, an increase of 1.8%, with 35 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.


43 year old Dennis Fickeria of Margaretville, has been sentenced to 4 ½ years in State Prison for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Fickeria’s residence in Margaretville in January, which resulted in the seizure of controlled substances and firearms, Fickeria admitted that he possessed Fentanyl with the intention of selling it, he was also ordered to be supervised by the Department of Parole for 1 year following his prison sentence.

CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE arrested 28 year old Corey Hadlock of Oxford for Criminal Contempt, Criminal Mischief and Harassment. Hadlock disobeyed an order of protection by subjecting the victim to unwanted physical contact, the victim attempted to Dial 911, Hadlock took the phone, preventing the 911 call. Hadlock was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for processing. Hadlock was arraigned in CAP Court and was released on his own recognizance.


Delaware County Sheriffs Deputies stopped a motor vehicle in the Town of Hamden after observing the vehicle driving erratically and violating multiple sections of the vehicle and traffic law. Upon stopping the vehicle, it was determined that the operator, 18 year old Brandyn Santiago of Peekskill had been smoking marijuana in the vehicle, he was charged with driving while ability is impaired by the use of drugs, Smoking Marijuana in a Motor vehicle, failure to keep right and Speeding at 65 miles an hour in a 40 miles per hour zone. Santiago was subsequently released on appearance tickets and directed to appear at the Town of Hamden court at a later date to answer for the charge.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced that a new contract was signed with Otsego County for the Law Enforcement Division. The contract compensates Deputies comparable to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

A Flood Warning continues for The Delaware River near Delhi, it has crested and is expected to fall below Minor Flood Stage this morning. At the West Branch of the Delaware River At Walton, Minor flooding is occurring and the river is expected to fall below flood stage late today and continue falling until early Sunday morning, Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas.


State Police and local law enforcement agencies will participate in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, through January 1, 2025. In addition to the DWI checkpoints and patrols, law enforcement officers will be watching for speeding drivers, distracted drivers and drivers violating the “Move Over Law,” which requires motorists to exercise extreme caution when passing any vehicle that is stopped in or on the side of the road.


Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Matthew Baird of Columbus, for Sexual Abuse, Forcible Touching, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, after they received a complaint of Sexual Abuse. Baird was accused of having sexual contact with a juvenile victim. Baird was arraigned in Chenango County Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded to the custody of the Chenango County Correctional Division on $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond, and a $75,000 partially secure bond at 10%.


The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37 year old William Killenberger of Worcester on multiple charges of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Investigators received information that Killenberger was in possession of firearms at his residence in East Worcester, After execution of the search warrant, multiple firearms were located with corresponding ammunition. Killenberger was previously in custody following an unrelated incident and was processed and was then lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New York State Police.

Lambrecht Auction in Sidney held their 2nd Annual Sidney EMS Charity event Saturday at their Sidney Location on Delaware Avenue. Jared Lambrecht told WCDO News this afternoon that they raised $50,800 for the Sidney Emergency Squad, that is in need of a new fully loaded ambulance, which costs about $250,000. Last year they raised $18,000 in their 1st charity auction effort for the Emergency squad.


Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Michael VanDerWeert of Guilford & 47 year old Dawn Cavanaugh of North Carolina, for Burglary, Petty Larceny, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy. Deputies responded to a burglary complaint at a business in the Town of Norwich, where someone broke into the building and stole multiple items. The vehicle used in the burglary was spotted at a business in the Village of Oxford, VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were arrested and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office where they were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Saturday to an ATV crash near Fuller Hollow Road in the Town of Hamden. Prior to Deputies’ arrival, Delaware County 911 reported that a victim had been privately transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in the Village of Walton with a second victim still on scene. Deputies located the 2nd victim, an 11-year-old male, at a residence, who was transported to Albany Medical Center by Life Net for non-life-threatening injuries. The 1st Victim was a 13-year-old female who was pronounced deceased at the Delaware Valley Hospital, due to injuries sustained from the crash.

Local collections totaled $1.84 billion for the month, up $41 million from the previous October, County and city collections outside of New York City increased by only .4%, 36 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.


The Chenango County Historical Society will participate in Giving Tuesday, on December 3rd. Giving Tuesday asks people to donating to local charities, Giving Tuesday is held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to assist in combating the Catskills Wildfires, The Grant Declaration will allow for funding to help cover costs associated with responding to the Jennings Creek/Sterling State Park wildfire and protecting those in its path. Statewide there were 13 wildfires reported Sunday, encompassing more than 5,000 acres, the state wide burn ban remains in effect.


State Police at Troop C in Sidney announced that 24 people were charged with DWI, from the period of November 1st through November 12th. State Police will continue with DWI patrols, with increased efforts during the upcoming Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday seasons.


Firefighters from Sidney Center & surrounding departments responded to the report of a structure fire late Sunday morning at 1129 Vandervoort Hill Road. The fire was contained to the basement and was quickly extinguished, no injuries were reported.


U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will join elected officials and educators to encourage Binghamton University students to apply to the DoD Cyber Service Academy scholarship program, which provides full college tuition in return for public service in the Department of Defense or the Intelligence Community. Successful applicants will serve one year in the DoD or the IC as a civilian employee for each year of their scholarship. Gillibrand's event begins at 3:00 this afternoon at the Binghamton University Innovative Technologies Complex at 85 Murray Hill Road in Vestal.


UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will launch “Be the Light,” to illuminate Newton House on Broad Street in Norwich. With a suggested donation of $20, community members can purchase a light that celebrates or memorializes a loved one. Names of honorees will be displayed at CMH throughout December. The Norwich Police Department concluded an investigation into the sale of narcotics yesterday, they arrested 59 year old John Williams of Edmeston on 3 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Williams is accused of possessing Methamphetamine, Crack Cocaine & Fentanyl, plus cash from suspected drug sales, Williams was arraigned at Chenango County Court and is being held wihout Bail, pending further court appearances.


Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 57 year old David Zimmer of Whitney Point following a high speed chase from Binghamton, onto I-88 into the Town of Fenton. on Tuesday,, a traffic stop was attempted on Zimmer, who's vehicle matched the description from an incident in Johnson city earlier. Zimmer was eventually stopped when his vehicle became disabled from a spike strip deployed by deputies & State Troopers. Zimmer faces 2 felony charges, 4 misdemeanors and 31 traffic violations following the high-speed pursuit, he was taken into custody, K9 units found cocaine in Zimmer's Vehicle, he was arraigned at & remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the District Attorney’s Office will no longer participate in the Delaware County Drug Court Program. Smith stated that the motivation behind the creation of Drug Court was noble, to help low level, non-violent, drug users obtain the treatment they needed, but the State’s Bail Reform and Discovery Reform, has led to the portion of the population the program was meant to help, are no longer entering the criminal justice system. WCDO News will interview Smith for more on this story next week.


State Police issued a total of 9,984 tickets statewide during the annual DWI Halloween Enforcement campaign which started on Thursday, October 31, 2024, and continued through Sunday, November 3, 2024. State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed distracted drivers who used handheld electronic devices. Troopers arrested 176 people for DWI and investigated 964 accidents, which resulted in three fatalities. Troopers issued almost 3600 tickets for speeding, Troop C had 678 total tickets during the initiative.


Binghamton Police responded to the report Thursday morning of an bomb threat at the State Office Building, at the 17th floor Attorney General’s office. A K9 Unit along with the Endicott Police Bomb Squad searched the office and did not find a bomb. The building has reopened, the investigation is continuing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Binghamton Police Detectives at 607-772-7080.

42 year old Dennis Fickeria of Margaretville pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance this week in Delaware County Court. In January, members of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Fickeria’s residence in the town of Middletown, they seized controlled substances and firearms, he was indicted for 38 counts related to illegal gun possession and drug sales, he admitted in court that he possessed Fentanyl with the intention of selling it, he faces 4.5 years in state prison, to be followed by 1 year of post release supervision, when sentenced on December 16th.

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Membership Meeting & Awards Ceremony on November 14th. Several County businesses will receive awards at the event, which will be held at the Foothills Performing Arts Center Atrium on Market Street in Oneonta.


Local government sales tax collections totaled $5.98 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2024, an increase of 1.4%, or $82.7 million, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. 8 of the 10 regions in the state, saw collections rise. Aggregate growth in third quarter collections for the counties and cities outside of New York City was 1.5%, year over year, it was the largest increase so far this year.


Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi will again be hosting area veterans for a special Veterans Day breakfast event on Thursday, November 8. The Chenango County Sheriff's Office announced that the South Abington Police Department in Pennsylvania located & arrested Donald Shurock, who is being held in the Lackawanna County Jail pending his extradition back to New York. Shurock was wanted since last week, he had been located in a vehicle by a deputy, resisted arrested and fled the scene on foot, the Deputy was treated & released for injuries sustained in trying to arrest Shurock. Shurock is wanted on the initial warrant plus Assault of a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.


Hartwick College introduced the Baking Innovation Lab Tuesday during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new site on Dietz Street in Oneonta. Hartwick President James Mullen commented about the new facility:

The Baking Innovation Lab is part of a Dietz Street development, which includes 64 units of affordable housing. The project received $1,470,000 in funding from the City’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award.


The Otsego County Board of Elections announced that Early Voting for the November 5 General Election will begin October 26 through November 3 at the Foothills Performing Arts Center, on Market Street in Oneonta & at The Meadows Office Complex, at 140 County Highway 33W in Cooperstown. Polls will be open from 9 am. to 5 pm. on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Polls will be open from 12 to 8 pm. on Tuesday and Thursday. The Delaware County Board of Supervisors will have an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the new DPW Administration Building at 2 Bridge Street in Delhi at 12:00 PM Today. The new office building houses the DPW administrative staff along with the Planning and Watershed Affairs offices. Remaining on Page Avenue in Delhi is the DPW material storage yard, the fueling station, the bridge fabrication shop and the salt shed. The new patrol building in Bloomville will allow for greater access to roads in the northern part of the county for maintenance and snow removal. The new mechanics facility in the Town of Walton will be for car and heavy equipment repair.


The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Benjamin Bishop of Otselic for reckless endangerment, two counts of unlawful fleeing, and one count of resisting arrest. The Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a road rage incident after a caller reported that Bishop's Van ran a vehicle off the road in Sherburne, additional calls described Bishop cutting off and tailgating other vehicles, he was located in Norwich, deputies attempted a traffic stop, he failed to comply, struck multiple vehicles and his vehicle became disabled, he fled on foot but was taken into custody after a taser was deployed. Bishop was also charged with numerous traffic citations & faces court action at a later date.


A recall of hundreds of frozen waffles and other toaster foods has been expanded, by TreeHouse Foods for possible listeria contamination. The company has recalled frozen waffles, Belgian waffles and pancakes sold in stores such as Dollar General, Target and Walmart. Consumers should throw away the products or return them to stores for a refund.


The State DMV warns customers to be cautious of car sales on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and similar sites. The advisory comes after a rise in stolen vehicles, including cars with altered ID numbers and forged titles. Investigations revealed that, as of October 15th there were 228 stolen vehicles worth $6.35 million recovered by the DMV, with 149 purchased by victims from these online platforms.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has successfully negotiated with New York City to stop the acquisition of land in the County, Shelly Johnson Bennett of the Delaware County Planning Department told WCDO News why this is important to the County & The Watershed region:

Johnson Bennett said that scientifically based programs will allow for developing some land & still make sure that the water supply used by New York City will remain clean.


2 new laws went into effect in New York State over the weekend, that will impact how healthcare providers obtain consent to payment and collect payments from patients. Healthcare providers Must collect consent for payment separate from consent to receive healthcare services; & they are prohibited from requiring credit card pre-authorization or requiring a patient’s credit card be kept on file prior to the delivery of emergency or medically necessary services, & they Must notify patients of the risks of using credit cards to pay for healthcare services.


US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced over $27 Million Dollars in federal funding for the Delaware County Electric Cooperative, which provides electricity to over 5,000 families, farms, and local businesses in Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie Counties. The Delaware County Cooperative will lead a partnership composed of 6 small electric cooperatives across 3 states to increase grid resilience against outages caused by weather events and tree damage caused by invasive species. The Cooperative will deploy advanced software to enable proactive grid management, as well as hardware such as grid sensors and drones to provide real-time data and monitoring capabilities.


The Delaware County Board of Elections announced that the ballot drop box previously outside the Board of Elections Office at 97 Main Street in Delhi, has been removed. Officials stated that It was taken down by maintenance in response to a directive from the chair of the Board of Supervisors, Tina Mole, citing security issues and a contentious election. Anyone who received an absentee or early vote by mail ballot who prefers not to return it by mail can deliver it to the Board of Elections office during normal business hours, from 8:30AM to 4:00 PM, and during some extended hours during early voting being held at our Delhi Office, October 28 through November 3. Absentee/early mail ballots can also be delivered to any poll site on Election Day, November 5th.


The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce announced that this is the last week to purchase tickets to attend the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce Annual Commitment to Community Dinner on Saturday, November 2nd @ the Bainbridge Community Center. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 36 year old Brian Worden of Sidney following an investigation into medications not being taken properly in the Otsego County Correctional Facility. Worden was charged with Attempted Promoting Prison Contraband when he failed to take his prescribed medication properly and attempted to remove the medication from the medication room but was caught by a Correctional Officer, he was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.


Chenango County Planning Director Shane Butler announced that there was a great turnout for our open house on the Chenango County 2050 Vision Plan Draft last week. State Police responded at about 6:45 Tuesday Morning to a fatal crash on County Highway 29 in the town of Harpersfield. The operator of the vehicle was traveling westbound when for an unknown reason left the roadway and struck a tree head on. The vehicle then became engulfed in flames. State police stated that The operator and only occupant did not survive, he has been identified as 25 year old Cameron Gaffi, of Franklin, New Jersey.


State Police responded to a single vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on State Highway 23 in the town of Morris. An investigation at the scene determined that the operator of the vehicle, 65 year old Michael Welsh of Cooperstown attempted to avoid a deer and went off the roadway, crashing into a fence post then went into a ditch, Welsh did not survive, his passenger 74 year old Margaret Welsh of Cooperstown was transported to Bassett Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.


45 year old Andre Gilliam of the Town of Chenango was found guilty by a Broome County Jury for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & criminally using drug paraphenalia. Gilliam faces up to 8 years in State Prison followed by 3 years of post-release supervision at sentencing. On November 7, 2023, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at 174 ½ Castle Creek Road, they seized fentanyl, a cutting agent, a digital scale and nearly $4000 in cash from suspected drug sales.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 28 year old Jacob Bassett of Morris following an investigation into a series of sexual assaults. An investigation revealed that on several different occasions in multiple locations in Otsego County, Bassett initiated several forms of sexual contact with a victim beginning when the victim was under the age of seventeen. Bassett was charged with 3 counts of 1st degree Rape, 2 counts of 3rd degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, he was remanded to the Otsego County Jail to await arraignment, the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office, recommended bail of $15,000 cash, $15,000 credit card and $150,000 bond, An order of protection was requested to be issued for the victim.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 69 year old Eric Stingle of Oneonta following an investigation of a Domestic Dispute in the Town of Oneonta. Stingle was charged with Harassment, Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Imprisonment & Criminal Mischief, he was located at his residence and was taken into custody without incident, he was turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.


The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division and U.S. Marshals located a 17-year-old female of Binghamton, who was wanted for Attempted Murder in relation to a recent shooting in the City of Binghamton. The juvenile fugitive was tracked to locations on Floral Ave. and Chelsea Square in the City of Binghamton, The Southern Tier SWAT team was deployed, executing a search warrant & they took the juvenile into custody, she was turned over to the City of Binghamton Police to be processed on the Attempted Murder charge, she will be arraigned and turned over to the custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

41 year old Willis Bickham Jr, of Binghamton, was found guilty of 1st Degree Rape, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child by a Broome County Jury Thursday. On June 24, 2023, Bickham Jr. took a 12-year-old child into an apartment at 2 Green Street in Binghamton and engaged in sexual acts. Sentencing is scheduled for October 24, 2024 where Bickham is facing up to 25 years in State Prison followed by 10 to 25 years of post-release supervision, and he must register as a Sex Offender with the state. Due to his criminal history, the Broome County District Attorney’s Office will pursue a sentence of 25 years to life under the Persistent Felony Offender guidelines.


The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 56-year-old Phillip Alvarez of Endwell, they recovered drugs and weapons from an apartment at 341 Main Street Binghamton. Police seized various weapons, ammunition , cocaine, crack cocaine, packaging materials, and over $5500 cash from suspected drug sales. Alvarez was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 5 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Obstructing Governmental Administration & Resisting Arrest, an additional search warrant was executed in the Town of Union where investigators found around $1,500 in suspected drug proceeds.
