Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Kayla Van Pelt of Otsego County, for Grand Larceny and Conspiracy. A larceny complaint was filed by a business in the Village of Sherburne, where Van Pelt and two other suspects acted together and stole over one thousand dollars in merchandise. Van Pelt was taken into custody at a residence in Otsego County, transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office to be processed, she was released on an appearance ticket for Village of Sherburne Court at a later date. More arrests are expected to be made.

The Otsego County Department of Health reports that a bat tested positive for rabies in the town of Oneonta, 1 person was exposed and started rabies post exposure vaccinations. All dogs, cats, and ferrets must be vaccinated for rabies, Unvaccinated pets in contact with wildlife that is suspected or confirmed to be rabid must be either euthanized or strictly quarantined at owner’s expense for 6 months. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 56 year old Scott Wood of Hamden for Driving While Intoxicated on November 16thth. Deputies responded to an assist EMS call on West Terry Clove Road for a male having trouble breathing, the male left the scene and was traveling on West Terry Clove Road. Deputies found a vehicle stopped in the roadway with a male asleep in the driver seat, who was identified as Scott Wood, who was charged with DWI & Driving with a BAC of .08 of higher, Open Container among other charges, he was released and will appear in the Town Hamden Court at a later date.


Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released the results of the targeted, 5-week public safety and crime response initiative conducted by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Response Group in Binghamton. From October 10th to November 15th , the Group's efforts resulted in 19 Narcotics Arrests, 14 Warrant Arrests, 43 Vehicle and Traffic Arrests, they conducted over 800 traffic stop and issued over 760 traffic violations.

48 year old Scott Mawhiney of Deposit was found guilty in Broome County Court this week for Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Assault, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon among other charges. On June 23, 2021, Mawhiney was involved in a domestic incident, the 2 female victims escaped, State Police responded, Mawhiney armed himself & shot at Trooper Ryan Thorp, who received a career tending injury from a bullet fragment striking him, Mawhiney will be sentenced on February 26. He faces a potential maximum sentence of 30 years to life in prison.


State Police will continue in a special traffic enforcement initiative to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday through Sunday, December 1, 2024. State Police will supplement regular patrols statewide, including fixed sobriety checkpoints, which targets distracted drivers by utilizing Concealed patrol vehicles to better locate drivers talking or texting on handheld devices. Elevated traffic volumes are expected, and wintry weather is expected to impact portions of the state, including in the Catskills & North Country.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office Office arrested 51 year old Byron Bump of the Town of Colesville, for 1st & 2nd degree Rape, & Attempted Rape, Bump was relieved from his job as a school bus driver for the Chenango Valley School District, he is accused of sexually abusing multiple minors over a lengthy period of time, Anyone with information should contact the Broome County Sheriff’s Office by calling 607-778-1196.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Jacob Snook of Gilbertsville on multiple charges following the execution of a search warrant following a residential fire in the Town of Butternuts. Snook was charged with Criminal Manufacture of Undetectable Firearm, Criminal Possession of Ammunition Feeding Device, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Ghost Gun, among other similar charges, Deputies and investigators executed the search warrant at the residence and discovered that Snook had two 3D printers to manufacture untraceable firearms, plus loaded high-capacity magazines and a large quantity of ammunition, he was taken into custody and was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

Bassett Healthcare Network announced the elimination of around 100 positions, the majority were administrative. Patient care would not be affected by the layoffs, which represent 2% of their total workforce.

On Tuesday, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force attempted to execute a narcotics search warrant at a residence and vehicle in the Town of Sanford. 39 year old Scott Lord of Deposit, fled the scene in a vehicle, leading law enforcement on a lengthy pursuit into Pennsylvania. As deputies and Pennsylvania State Police responded to seize the vehicle, Lord was found to still be in the vehicle and he fled the parking lot, striking a Broome County patrol car and another vehicle, Vehicle tire deflation devices were successfully deployed and Lord crashed into a creek. Lord was arrested for Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, The Wayne County District Attorney has also announced several felony charges.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Thomas Toomer of Oxford for multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 1 count of Aggravated Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 1 count of Criminal Contempt. Members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to Toomer’s residence to serve an eviction notice, Toomer and an additional occupant of the residence were removed, the other occupant had an order of protection against Toomer. Toomer was then taken into custody without incident. Several firearms, ammunition, and high-capacity magazines were located in the residence. Toomer had 3 previous Felony convictions & was not allowed to have firearms, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail pending additional court action in Chenango County Court.

On September 18th, 2024 the Sidney Police Department began an investigation into a social media post that made a threat to several specific students of the Sidney School District. The same threat was also directed to several specific students of the Walton School District. Sidney Police Department has charged a 14 year old female with one count of Making a terroristic threat and four counts of Aggravated harassment, Due to the subject's age she was issued a juvenile appearance ticket to appear at the Delaware County Probation Department and released.


State Police is warning the public of a nationwide automated sextortion scam in which scammers use people’s email address to coerce payments using intimidation. Scammers obtain emails and other personal information purchased illegally on the dark web to contact victims, & claim to possess images of the victim viewing pornographic material and threatens to disclose this content to everyone in their contact list unless they pay in Bitcoin, however, the scammer does not have access to the victim’s device or personal information. If you receive one of these emails, do not engage or share any personal information, Victims should block the sender, delete the email, and report it through the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov or call the FBI at 1‐800‐CALL‐FBI. State Police or local law enforcement agencies can also assist with criminal investigations.

State Police were dispatched last Wednesday to an accident involving a UTV in the town of Smithville. An investigation revealed that a UTV was on Waldon Road in the town of Smithville when the operator; 52 year old William Williams of Greene lost control, left the roadway, struck a tree and the UTV came to rest on its side. Williams did not survive, the unidentified 24-year-old passenger was transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.


Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 year old Nicholas Harrington on 4 active warrants and an additional open case. On May 29, Harrington was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Detectives Division, there were warrants for Forgery, for being the operator of a vehicle in an accident, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Grand Larceny, and for a stolen vehicle, he was taken into custody in the Town of Pitcher, he was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance pending future court action.


The Chenango County Health Department announced that raccoon located on County Route 10 in the Hamlet of Preston was tested on May 30, 2024, by the NYS Wadsworth Laboratory and was found to have rabies. Residents and visitors in the area are advised to take the following precautions: Contact the Chenango County Sheriff’s, or the Chenango County Health Department to report animals which are behaving strangely or aggressively. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 62 year old Michael Kirby of Delhi, after a warrant was issued for his arrest by the Town of Walton Court, and the Town of Deposit Court. Deputies responded to reports of Domestic Disputes 3 times in May where Kirby violated an order of protection & had subjected the victim to physical contact. Kirby was charged with Aggravated Harassment, Criminal Contempt, Reckless endangerment & on the arrest warrants, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.


A nurse who recently began working at the Broome County Correctional Facility has been charged after an investigation found she had stolen 8 pain pills earlier this week. 31 year old Meghan Manning of Troy, PA reported to her superiors that 8 pills with Codeine had gone missing from the Correctional Facility Pharmacy Room. Manning was charged with Falsifying business Records, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Petty Larceny, Manning was processed and given an appearance ticket to appear at the Town of Dickinson court, her employment with PrimeCare Medical has been terminated.


A fundraiser is scheduled Saturday at the Sidney American Legion on Union Street, for 5 year old Rowan DeCocker of Bainbridge, who is battling Brain Cancer, co-organizer Brenda Flowers explains:

Sidney Police Department received report of an armed robbery Friday Afternoon at about 1:35 PM at Smiley's at 17 West Main Street. The suspect displayed a Handgun, demanded cash, he was wearing a black and purple wig, blue Oneonta YellowJackets hooded sweatshirt and pink slippers. The suspect left went hrough yards, left behind the disguises and left in a Silver Subaru parked on Adams Street, & left the village. The suspect is a bald or balding, heavy set white male over 6 feet tall. State Police in Oneonta is attempting to identify an individual that was captured on a surveillance camera at the GameStop store located on State Route 23 in the town of Oneonta in regard to a larceny investigation. The Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has received a $5,000 grant investment from national nonprofit Petco Love in support of its lifesaving work on behalf of animals in Otsego County through clinics aimed at expanding access for animals who need care. The Petco Love program helps find homes for pets in partnership with more than 4,000 organizations, like the Susquehanna SPCA, in order to get pets the care they need & adopted into homes, and make sure that pets are not unnecessarily euthanized. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Justin Kucera of West Edmeston following an animal cruelty investigation. Kucera was charged with Overdriving, Torturing, Injuring Animals; Failure to provide proper Sustenance, following an investigation into a dog complaint in Edmeston. Kucera was issued an Appearance Ticket and is to return to Town of Edmeston Court on May 6, 2024.

Local government sales tax collections totaled $5.6 billion in the January to March Quarter, an increase of 1.6%, compared to the same quarter last year. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said that this was the lowest rate of growth since the first quarter in 2021, with several upstate regions experiencing a year-over-year decline. Locally, Delaware County had 1 of the steepest declines at -6.4%.

The Oneonta City Department of Public Works announced that they are working to repair a water main break that is affecting Hartwick College. 35 year old Dimitri Escrich of Deposit pleaded guilty to Possessing a Sexual Performance by a child, in Delaware County Court, an indictment alleged that Escrich possessed a video depicting a child participating in a sexual performance, he pleaded guilty & will be sentenced to 10 years felony sex offender probation, and 20 years at minimum of being a registered sex offender on June 10th in Delaware County Court.


The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for March 2024. The State’s unemployment rate decreased from 4.4% in February to 4.3% in March, Locally, Chenango County Had 4.1%, Delaware County 4.7% & Otsego County 4.6% unemployment in March.


Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Masai Andrews of Endicott Saturday for Obstructing Governmental Administration following the “Smoke Weed Outside the Binghamton Police Station” event after intentionally interfering with deputies attempting to take an individual into custody. While in custody at the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Andrews was placed in an interview room and where he broke a chair while trying to pry off his handcuffs, & he broke the interior handle of the interview room door, he was additionally charged with Criminal Mischief & remains in custody at the Correctional Facility pending court action.
