The Chenango County Board of Supervisors invite the Chenango County Public to an Open House tomorrow at the Chenango County Office Building in Norwich, regarding the proposed new County Office building project. Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey Blanchard explains:

The Open House on Tuesday runs from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at 5 Court Street in Norwich, more information about the project is available at chenangocountyny.gov.

The State DOT advises motorists that the I-88 westbound Exit 20 on-ramp will be closed from Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 31, weather permitting, to accommodate for resurfacing work. The closure is part of an ongoing project to resurface I-88 between the Otsego County line and Exit 20. The project includes the installation of new guide-rail, The interstate will remain open and is currently restricted to one lane of travel in each direction, the ramp must be fully closed during this phase of work and motorists should follow the posted detour.

37 year old Rondell Dowdell of Endicott, pleaded guilty this morning in Broome County Court, to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. On July 17, 2025, Dowdell was stopped in Vestal while operating an electric bicycle in violation State Traffic Laws, a Vestal Police Department canine alerted to the presence of narcotics. A search recovered approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale, packaging material, and cash from suspected drug sales. Dowdell is scheduled for sentencing on October 14th, he faces 3 years in State Prison and 3 Years of post release supervision.

The State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning members of the military community to be aware of scams targeting active-duty service members and veterans. The FTC reports the number of scams targeting the military community increased by 17%, costing victims $684 million in 2025, with 35,215 fraud reports filed. Service members and their families should never give personal information by phone or by clicking on links in emails to an unknown company or person. The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1-800-697-1220 is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm, consumer complaints can be filed at Dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.

Oneonta Fire Department responded to a fire at 10 Luther Street Sunday morning at about 9:00 Am. all occupants escaped without injuries, there were no injuries to firefighters, the cause of the fire is under investigation, the structure was a total loss.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Samuel Layton of New Lisbon, for 3 counts of Reckless Endangerment, following an investigation into a shots fired complaint in the Town of Exeter. Layton is accused of firing a semi-automatic rifle in the direction of an occupied residence with a family of 3 inside, resulting in a rifle round impacting through the residence, he was located, arrested, processed, and turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Centralized Arraignment

State Police arrested 62 year old Dawn Hawley of Delancey for Stalking, after a victim located a tracking device in their vehicle. The victim believed that Hawley had placed the tracker in December 2025 but was unable to find it until last week, Hawley was processed and was issued an appearance ticket to the Hamden Town Court on July 22, 2026.

The State DOT advises motorists that State Route 23 in the Town of Plymouth, just west of Ashcraft Road, has reopened to alternating single-lane traffic, controlled by a temporary signal, as work continues on a culvert replacement project. The roadway had been fully closed for approximately one week, with a signed detour, to allow crews to set the culvert in place. Construction began on June 29, and work is expected to continue for another four to five weeks, weather permitting. State Police arrested 44 year old Jason Marsh of Chenango Forks following a rape investigation. Marsh was charged with 1st degree rape, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing & Unlawful Imprisonment, the investigation determined that while at a residence in the town of Greene, Marsh forcibly sexually assaulted, struck and choked the victim, who did escape & contacted police and was evaluated at a local hospital. Marsh was arrested at his residence and later transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded to the jail pending his next court date on June 4th.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 64 year old Eugene Paulis of Worcester, for Menacing, following an investigation into a dispute involving a subject threatening others with a baseball bat in the Town of Worcester. Paulis was arrested and issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Worcester Town Court at a later date.

Otsego County Board of Representatives announced the purchase of the Cooperstown Holstein property, also known as the Huntington Farm, on County Road 33W, in the Town of Middlefield on Monday. The acquisition will initially allow for improved protection and security for multiple county departments' equipment and will also allow for a secondary entrance into the current campus, which would prevent the isolation of staff if there were ever a failure of the current entrance road. This purchase will also allow for the potential expansion of county facilities.

State Police arrested 37 year old Adam Rowe of Truxton after an investigation of the manufacturing and selling of ghost guns. State Police CSU and Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested Rowe Sunday, after a search warrant was executed at his residence. Police seized an AR-style ghost gun with a loaded 10-round magazine, plus a host of other weapons, plus Three 3D printers, 3 raccoons & 1 opossum. Rowe was charged with numerous counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition Feeding Device, and 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, additional charges are pending through the DEC regarding the wildlife. Rowe possessed many firearms and utilized 3D printers to manufacture firearms & components, As a convicted felon on probation, he is prohibited from possessing firearms. 22 year old Angela Dennis of Truxton was charged with 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Rowe was processed was being held for Arraignment, Dennis was issued appearance tickets and was released.

The New York State Public Service Commission set temporary rate increases for NYSEG that are less than what the company requested. The temporary rates have no bearing on the Commission’s final determinations, the Commission has 11 months to make a determination on a utility rate filing. The temporary rates set by the Commission start June 1st, the increase for NYSEG customers will be 3.7% percent for electric, 0.5% for gas.

School budgets will be voted on state wide today, as well as Board of Education in school bus purchases in some cases. Check with you local school district website or Facebook page for the times & locations for voting.

The State DOT invites members of the public to view and discuss project plans and construction for the South-side Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project for State routes 23 and State Route 28. The improvements include extended turning lanes, addition sidewalks, full repaving, and updated pavement markings. The open house will be today at the South-side Community Room at 5006 State Highway 23 in Oneonta, 2 sessions will be held, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Construction is expected to start in June and continue through fall of 2027.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced the successful use of Thermal Imaging Drone Aids in Locating Missing Person Sunday night. Deputies responded to a call of a missing vulnerable adult in the Town of Edmeston, Deputies quickly initiated a coordinated search & they deployed a Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aerial System equipped with thermal imaging technology, Using the drone’s advanced capabilities, deputies successfully located the individual in a field. The K-9 team and responding deputies found the missing person, who was suffering from hypothermia and complaining of hip pain. The victim was taken to Bassett Medical Center for further evaluation.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Johnathon Brezinsky of Sidney for Promoting prison contraband at the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Investigators were notified by Correctional Facility Staff that an Inmate was found to be in possession of dangerous contraband within the Facility, Brezinsky was arrested, arraigned and was remanded back to the custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 dollars cash bail, $20,000 dollars partially secured bond, and he faces court action shortly.

State Police arrested 39 year old Joshua Skobern of Johnson City after an investigation into an arson at self-service car wash in Endicott. Skobern was charged with Criminal Mischief, 5th degree Arson after Troopers responded to Enviro Auto Wash on Watson Boulevard for damage that occurred on April 12, to a car wash payment kiosk. An investigation determined that Skobern punched the payment kiosk then struck it with a spray wand and then used a lighter to burn the face-plate, causing damage. Troopers located Skobern at his residence. He was taken into custody and was processed and was issued appearance tickets to the Union Town Court on April 28.

Delaware Opportunities is contracted to run the County Senior meals program at 6 locations, plus with deliveries, funded through state and federal subsidies, during contract negotiations with the County, officials determined that the program is not sustainable at the current costs, on Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors Office for the Aging oversight committee moved to provide for a pro-rated contract with Delaware Opportunities to expire on December 31, then in 2027 the Senior Meals program would be administered through the county rather than a 3rd party. If Delaware Opportunities ceases operation immediately, Delaware County would continue the service without interruption as a County-run program, through the Office for the Aging, with no change to site or staff.

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, in partnership with the Norwich Family YMCA, will host a free educational program tonight focused on helping baseball and softball players stay strong, and injury-free throughout the season. UHS Spokesperson Melissa Stagnaro explains:

Norwich Police executed a search warrant Friday on East Main Street & Arrested 52 year old Delf King, following a Chenango County Court indictment. King was charged with 3 counts of Burglary, Attempted Robbery, and 2nd & 3rd degree Assault. King was arraigned on the charges & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 bail, pending future court action.

The online auction for the Grand Union Plaza at 54 East Main Street in Norwich, began Monday, with a starting bid of $500,000. Norwich Mayor Robert Jeffrey told WCDO News that they are talking to grocery industry people & federal & state lawmakers to try to get interest in the site:

The grocery store at that location closed with little advance warning recently, leaving downtown Norwich without easy access to groceries, and adding to the unemployment rate in the region when all of the workers were let go.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced that 10 projects and individuals have been recognized with 2026 New York State Historic Preservation Awards. Locally, the MARK Project of Arkville, will receive the Joan K. Davidson Award, They have spent over 40 years advancing community revitalization in the central Catskills through collaborative, locally driven initiatives and becoming a model for community-based revitalization, uniting local leaders, residents, and funding partners, through initiatives in affordable housing, economic development, local MARK PROJECTfood systems, tourism, farming, civic planning, and downtown revitalization.

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced their 2026 Annual Award Winners, the Business of the Year is Unalam, the Eugene A. Area Congressman Josh Riley participated in a hearing of the Public Service Commission last week where he cross-examined NYSEG executives and demanded answers about why the utility monopoly is demanding Upstate New Yorkers pay higher bills while sending millions in profits to its foreign parent company. Riley said that NYSEG executives confirmed for the first time they authorized a $450 million dividend to Iberdrola; their parent corporation in Spain, they were already preparing to request a rate increase of more than $500 million, which would increase New Yorkers Monthly bills by about $35 dollars a month. The Public Service Commission is expected to rule on the NYSEG rate request shortly.

Vestal Police responded Wednesday to a report of an individual experiencing a mental health crisis in the area of 581 Sequoia Lane, officers encountered an individual who was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm. During the course of the interaction, officers made numerous requests for the individual to drop the knife. The individual ignored commands and threw a television at officers & raised the knife and advanced toward an officer. Despite the continued de-escalation efforts, shots were fired and the individual was struck. The individual was transported to Wilson Medical Center. No officers were injured during the incident. State Police will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstance surrounding the shooting. State Police announced that the individual was identified as 38 year old Eslam Ahmed Hegazy of Vestal, he has succumbed to his injuries.

Chenango County officials remind residents that public transportation from Cathay Express Transportation will begin Monday, March 9th. Cathay Express will offer a fare-free day on March 9th to allow everyone to experience the service and learn the routes, Regular fares for Individual passengers will be from 50 cents to $3.00 per ride and a monthly passenger pass will be between $20 to $40. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Office arrested 51 year old Byron Bump of the Town of Colesville, for 1st & 2nd degree Rape, & Attempted Rape, Bump was relieved from his job as a school bus driver for the Chenango Valley School District, he is accused of sexually abusing multiple minors over a lengthy period of time, Anyone with information should contact the Broome County Sheriff’s Office by calling 607-778-1196.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Jacob Snook of Gilbertsville on multiple charges following the execution of a search warrant following a residential fire in the Town of Butternuts. Snook was charged with Criminal Manufacture of Undetectable Firearm, Criminal Possession of Ammunition Feeding Device, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Ghost Gun, among other similar charges, Deputies and investigators executed the search warrant at the residence and discovered that Snook had two 3D printers to manufacture untraceable firearms, plus loaded high-capacity magazines and a large quantity of ammunition, he was taken into custody and was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office is going pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they’re inviting the public to help design the new logo and t-shirt for this year’s Pink Patch Project fundraiser, which is a national campaign bringing law enforcement and the community together to raise breast cancer awareness. The State Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved $265 million in financial assistance for water infrastructure improvement projects across the state. , $30 million in grants from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help 30 communities across the state to inventory lead service lines in drinking water systems, Locally, the City of Oneonta will get a $2,000,000 grant and $3,072,625 interest-free financing and a $3,000,000 WIIA grant for upgrades to the water treatment plant and storage and distribution system. The Board also approved approximately $30 million for lead service line inventory projects for numerous municipalities, including the Villages of Delhi & Walton locally.

State Officials announced this week that Shooting Incidents Decreased By 29% In New York State, after the state received reports from law enforcement agencies, that were taking part in New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination or "GIVE" initiative. Hochul's office also announced a 21 percent decline in the number of individuals killed by gun violence in the same period, the initiative supports 28 police departments in 21 counties, Nassau, Suffolk & Yonkers had the steepest declines of almost 60%.

The Sidney Village Board met last night, & there were questions regarding an additional charge added to the water bill starting September 1st. Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News that the village had to find a new water source after years of manganese in the old supply, and was ordered by the DEC to correct the problem, there was state money & loans available to help pay for it, which led to the rate increase:

Baker said that they hope to have the new well for the village on line by the end of the year, he said that anyone who would like more information can contact the Sidney village office & set up a meeting with him & others involved in the project.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 year old Stephen Kiss of Davenport for Criminal Contempt and Harassment following an Order of Protection Violation incident, in the Town of Davenport. On August 14th, Deputies responded to the Charlotte Creek Mobile Home Park, Deputies found that the victim had been harassed by Kiss while an order of protection was in place, On August 19th, Deputies arrested Kiss, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.

The State Department of Labor today released local area unemployment rates for July, the State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.2% to 4.3% in July, Locally, Chenango County had 3.7% Unemployment, Delaware County had 4.5% & Otsego County 4.3% in July.

The United State Postal Inspection Service is warning Americans of a new attempt for hackers to use your own device to steal your identity. There are a variety of messages these scammers will send to get you to click on a link & that will lead to the hackers retrieving information, such as account usernames and passwords, Social Security number, date of birth, credit and debit card numbers, PIN Number or other sensitive information, to report a suspected suspicious text, send all of the pertinent information by email to spam@uspis.gov.

Former Congressman George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, he could face 7 years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7th.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 75 year old Wayne Sparling of Walton for Aggravated Harassment. On July 23rd, Deputies received a complaint of a dispute between neighbors, they requested an Arrest Warrant from the Town of Walton Court. On August 7th, Deputies received an Arrest Warrant and arrested Sparling, he was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment Processing.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that allows New York’s small craft manufacturers of spirits & cider, to ship directly to consumers. The new law takes effect in 90 days, allowing consumers to purchase New York’s craft spirits & cider and have it shipped to their home.

Chenango County Health Department will hold a rabies clinic for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets today at Baille Lumber in Smyrna from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Pre-Registration is required by calling 607-337-1673, a $5 donation is suggested. Otsego County Public Health is also holding a vaccine clinic for dogs, cats & Ferrets at Neahwa Park in Oneonta today from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

38 year old Nikita Kingsbury of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Monday and she pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell. Kingsbury was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury for allegedly selling Methamphetamines in the Village of Sidney on August 11, 2022. she was released on her own recognizance while the case was pending. Separately, a felony complaint was filed alleging the sale of illegal narcotics in the Town of Davenport in May. Kingsbury pleaded guilty in a plea bargain arrangement she will be sentenced to 2 years of incarceration in state prison to be followed by two years of post-release supervision on each conviction.

The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the fatal plane crash that occurred on June 30 in Delaware County, killing 5 people. The report indicated that storm activity was in the plane's path, and that a controller had warned the pilot about the weather before the crash., although it is unclear if that was a factor in the crash. The report also found evidence of "overload failure", 5 people from Georgia will killed in the crash, the investigation is ongoing.

Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced the Capping Prescription Costs Act, legislation that would cap the annual out-of-pocket cost of prescription drugs at $2,000 for individuals and $4,000 for families with private insurance:

Gillibrand said that if the legislation is passed, about 10 million New Yorkers would benefit, Several Senators co-sponsor the bill, it also has a sponsor in the US House of Representatives.

The State DOT announced that a tractor trailer carrying manure, overturned on US 11 in the town of Barker, losing about 1/3 of its load on the road. Both lanes are blocked, Guiderail damage was reported, there was No fuel spill or leak reported. Detours have been set up, at least 1 injury is reported, the road is expected to be closed for several hours for clean up & for the accident reconstruction & investigation.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for Ryan Watson on an outstanding warrant for menacing & jumping bail, Watson was last known to frequent the Lock Street area of the Town of Fenton. Chenango County Attorney Zachary Wentworth announced his candidacy for the newly created Chenango County Family Court Judge position after legislation was signed by Governor Hochul. He is seeking the nomination of the Chenango Republican County Committee to appear on the November ballot in this year's General Election. Wentworth has served as a Public Defender in Chenango County for several years..

50-year-old Kevin Harrington of Oneonta pleaded guilty to 2 counts of mail fraud, he admitted that while serving as executive director at First Community Care of Bassett, LLC, he submitted fraudulent expense reports seeking reimbursement for the purchase of CPAP machines that were not purchased, stealing more than $150,000 from his former place of work. Sentencing will be November 21st, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of up to 3 years of supervised release.

Congressman Marc Molinaro's constituent service team will hold mobile office hours from 2:00pm to 4:00pm today at the Bainbridge Village Hall, constituents will be able to connect with representatives to resolve issues they are having with federal agencies like the VA, IRS, and Social Security Administration.

NYSEG is reporting over 3000 customers without power this afternoon, following the heavy wet snow over the region. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible. Most of the power outages were in the Middle & Eastern townships in Delaware County.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to motor vehicle complaint in the Town of Davenport November 26th, Deputies learned that a vehicle had been stolen, damaged and return to the owner’s residence. Later that day Sheriff's Deputies located where the vehicle had been involved in a property damage accident. Deputies determined that owner 23-year-old Hector Padilla of Davenport had made a false report and was the operator of the vehicle when it was involved in the accident. Deputies charged Padilla with 2 counts of Criminal Mischief, 1 count of Obstructing Governmental Administration & 1 count of Falsely Reporting an Incident, he was issued appearance tickets for Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

On Saturday at approximately 5:30 pm; The Otsego County 911 Center received multiple 911 calls reporting an explosion and residential structure fire on Richards Avenue in the Town of Oneonta. The Oneonta Fire Department and multiple mutual aid departments responded. Upon arrival, they found multiple structures with severe damage and an active structure fire. Deputies and members of various fire departments assisted residents in the immediate area with a precautionary evacuation. Once the fire was extinguished, 60 year old Desmond Moan was found deceased. A neighboring resident received medical attention for minor injuries sustained during the explosion, the initial investigation determined the cause of the fire at 18 Richards Avenue was a result of human error.

1 person has died as a result of a house fire Friday night at 72 Colfax Avenue in Binghamton, 2 dogs were also killed by the flames. Binghamton Fire fighters arrived at the scene, they found heavy flames coming from 72 Colfax spreading to 74 Colfax Ave. Firefighters removed 1 person from the house, who was transported to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Unadilla Fire was dispatched to a possible structure fire in the town of Unadilla on Kilkenny Road, at about 4:15 Saturday afternoon. Additional personnel were called in from Franklin, Wells Bridge, and Sidney Fire departments, it took approximately 25 minutes to get the fire knocked down.

The Tioga County District Attorney’s Office announced that 32 year old Boyd Fenton of Athens, Pennsylvania was arraigned on a 105-count indictment for setting a fire at Tioga Downs that killed 30 horses, destroyed the barn, injured a trainer, he was indicted for arson, assault, burglary, 38 counts of criminal mischief, 30 counts of interference with or injury to domestic animals; 31 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; aggravated cruelty to animals; bail for Fenton has been set at $25,000 cash, $50,000 property and $250,000 secured bond.

Delaware County Officials are aware of a complaint filed in the Northern District of New York by The Reporter. Officials can not make any comment at this time as the matter is in pending litigation, but officials deny all claims against the County as well as any individual named as a defendant in that matter, and will vigorously defend the action. The County was sued last week by the Reporter, as they claim that the action by the Board of Supervisors to remove The Reporter as the County's official paper for the publishing of legal notices, was in retaliation for coverage of county affairs by the Reporter's staff.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 44 year old Laura Davis of Big Indian was indicted for Drugged Driving by the Delaware County Grand Jury on December 7th. The Indictment alleges that on March 3rd, Davis was driving in the Village of Walton while her ability to operate that motor vehicle was impaired by a stimulant, she was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of a Controlled Substance Outside of its Original Container.

State Police at Norwich arrested 37 year old Michael Salamey of Frankfort, in connection with a renovation at home in Chenango County. Salamey was charged with 2 counts of 3rd degree Grand Larceny, Scheming to Defraud & Petty Larceny. Salamey is accused of entering into a contract for $33,000 to complete improvements to a home in the village of Sherburne, he did not finish the work and also stopped communicating with the homeowners. Additionally, Salamey is accused of failing to pay a surveyor & Sub Contractor, he was arraigned in the Norwich City Court and is scheduled to appear at the Sherburne Village Court on November 16, 2023.

State Police arrested 3 people after a fight at the Lantern Hill trailer park in Oneonta Saturday. An investigation by Troopers at the scene determined that 25 year old La-Tee Baker of Oneonta, 21 year old Bryanna Patterson of Oneonta, and 23 year old Bethany Brown of Delhi, were involved in a fight, both women sustained injuries, Brown was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital. Baker and Patterson were located by Troopers walking along State Highway 23 and were arrested. They were issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on November 21, 2023. After release from the hospital, Brown was charged with Assault, she was issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on December 5.

45 year old Kellie Sanderson of Walton, appeared in Delaware County Court and was arraigned on a sealed indictment. The 5-count indictment charged Sanderson with 3 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing, Welfare Fraud & Grand Larceny, for submitting false applications to the Delaware County Department of Social Services on 3 separate occasions reporting incorrect household income to obtain public assistance benefits that she was not entitled to in an amount greater than $3,000. Sanderson pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released, the case is scheduled for a conference on November 13th.

The Sidney Democratic Committee is holding a Meet and Greet for Deirdre Hay, who is running on the Democratic line for NY State Supreme Court Justice for the 6th Judicial District, in the upcoming November 7th general election. Hay will meet with area residents at 6:30 in the Sidney Library Smart Community Room tonight. Hay is running for the seat against Republican candidate Cheryl Insinga. State Police announced today that they are embarking on a new recruitment campaign. Applications for the State Trooper Entrance Exam will open on October 23rd through March 4th of next year. The last day to take the Trooper Entrance Examination is March 17, 2024. During its most recent recruitment campaign which ended on October 1st, 12,691 individuals applied to take the exam, with a significant increase in applications within the 29 to 34-year-old age range, after Governor Hochul approved a request from the State Police to raise the maximum age to apply to 34, more information is available at joinstatepolice.ny.gov.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by 7,500 to 8,261,800 in September. The State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 3.9% in August to 4.0% in September, the statewide labor force participation rate increased slightly to 61.6% in September 2023, matching its highest level in a decade.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that Pamela Fox is now in Custody. The Office announced Wednesday that there was an outstanding warrant for Fox's arrest for a Violation of Probation for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle. Fox was apprehended following a tip being forwarded to the Sheriff's Office.

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested 44 year old Erin Walker of Union, for 3rd degree Grand Larceny and Falsifying Business Records. An investigation revealed that Walker embezzled approximately $12,000 from American Window Cleaning Company in the town of Fenton from 2016 to 2022. Walker was arrested and brought to the Broome County Correctional Facility for Central Arraignment.

The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council will host a public open forum today to solicit feedback and priorities from the community, today at 5:30 at SUNY Delhi. State Comptroller's office conducted an audit of the South Kortright School District, the audit found that District officials generally ensured claims were adequately supported and properly audited prior to payment, certain purchases lacked necessary supporting documentation. Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 28 year old Joseph Santi of Binghamton was sentenced to 3 years in prison, after he pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant in June of 2021 and found Santi to be in possession of pills, methamphetamines, and fentanyl with intent to sell. Santi will also serve 2-years post-release supervision.

41 year old Bradley Cook of Oneonta was sentenced to 20 years in state prison and 15 years of post-release supervision, Cook was convicted on 2 counts of a first-degree criminal sexual act.

The application period is now open for New York State's entry-level law enforcement civil service exam, will be held in the fall. Qualified candidates can apply online until August 3rd. The exam is used to fill jobs for the DEC for Environmental Conservation Police Officer Trainee & Forest Rangers, in the Parks Department for Park Police Officer Trainees & in SUNY for University Police Officers. Approximately 400 entry-level law enforcement positions statewide will be filled over the next year.

State Police have arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed a man inside Stewart's in Sherburne last night. State Police said that an Investigator walked into the Stewart's when he saw a man and a woman physically fighting. He attempted to separate the two when the woman stabbed the man. The Investigator restrained the woman and store employees called 911. The victim, identified as 56 year old Daniel Purdy of Sherburne was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with serious but non-life threatening injuries. 25 year old Jessica Collins of Sherburne was charged with 1st Degree Assault, She was processed and transported to Chenango County Jail. State Police were assisted on scene by Chenango County Deputies, the investigation is continuing.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 1 car property damage automobile accident on County Highway 14 in the Town of Franklin on May 5th. Deputies determined that the vehicle crossed over the dividing lines, entered into the oncoming lane of travel, struck guardrails, causing it to become disabled. 53-year-old Dorian Stewart of Unadilla was operating the vehicle with a suspended license and in an intoxicated state, she was charged with failure to keep right, aggravated unlicensed operation and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Stewart was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Franklin Court at a later date

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested 24 year old Austin Kuczek of Newfield for 2 counts of Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors, for allegedly sending inappropriate images to juveniles. Kuczek was formerly a member on the Newfield Town School Board and a teacher’s aide in the Ithaca City School District. He is currently the Recreation Director in the Town of Newfield, he was released on appearance tickets to the Newfield Town Court at a later date.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Felix Hartman of Unadilla for Burglary, 3rd degree assault, Attempted Rape, forcible touching Stalking & Criminal Impersonation for an incident in the Town of Unadilla Friday evening. Hartman claimed to be with a fire department, he allegedly sexually assaulted the victim, who sustained an arm injury & was treated & released at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta. Several hours later, State Police received an additional sexual assault complaint in the Town of Otego. Hartmann was located by Troopers at his residence, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond. An order of protection was issued, more charges are expected.

Former Oneonta Mayor David Brenner passed away Friday at the age of 90. The driver, 30 year old Stephanie Robinson of Schenevus was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for serious injuries. She was the only person in the car, the crash remains under investigation.

State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene of a fatal fire in Gilbertsville Monday Morning at 22 Maple Street. Members of the fire department located the resident of the home deceased inside, she has been identified as 64-year-old Lucinda Dubben, The investigation into the fire continues, State Police investigators said that foul play is not suspected.

The State Cannabis Control Board today approved the filing of proposed Medical Cannabis Program regulations for public comment that will implement certain provisions of the state’s new Cannabis Law, today's decision will shift the program from the State Health Department to the Office of Cannabis Management. The regulations allows for flexibility for pharmacists to provide their services remotely, Replaces a requirement that Registered Organizations maintain continuous video surveillance for 24 hours a day and Allows the Office of Cannabis Management to modify product testing requirements as necessary.

During the Superbowl Weekend STOP – DWI campaign Troopers in Troop “C” removed 9 impaired drivers off the roadways. Tuesday's COVID 19 testing numbers continue to show a decrease in the percentage of positive cases, according to the Governor's office & The State Health Department. Over 177,000 New Yorkers were tested, with over 9300 positive cases, for a positivity rate of 5.25%. Patient Hospitalizations dropped sharply to 6628, ICU Patient numbers declined by 46 to 1094, Patients on ventilators decreased by 26 to 641, 136 deaths were reported in Hospitals & Nursing homes Tuesday.

State Lawmakers released their proposed redistricting maps this week, the state will lose one seat in the House of Representatives based on population shifts in the 2020 census. Redistricting wound up back in the hands of the legislature, after the Independent Redistricting Commission failed to come up with a plan, which they were required to do based on the 2014 public referendum that took redistricting away from lawmakers. 22nd District Congresswoman Claudia Tenney announced that she will seek to win the new 23rd District.

Jury selection began in Broome County Court yesterday in the trial of 44-year old Scott Mawhiney of Deposit, who has been charged with 1st degree attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a firearm and several other charges, for allegedly shooting Trooper Ryan Thorp on June 23rd. State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a home on Sunrise Terrace in Deposit when shots rang out and Trooper Thorp was wounded in the arm, Trooper Thorp is still recovering from his injuries.

Chenango County Health Department reported their 87th death related to COVID 19 today. Officials reported that they have 185 active cases, 31% are vaccinated, they are up to 469 quarantined, 6 hospitalized, they have had a total of 5143 total cases since the pandemic started.

Bassett Healthcare Network will be holding COVID-19 vaccination booster shot clinics, that will be open to the public. O’Connor Hospital in Delhi is holding a COVID-19 vaccine booster clinic on Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the Moderna vaccine only. Appointments are required at 746-0525. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle operated by 32- year-old Jesse McHargue of Middleburgh, last Thursday for inadequate tail lamps. Deputies learned that McHargue’s driver’s license was revoked due failing to answer a previous summons out of the Town of Middleburgh. McHargue was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Tail Lamps, he was released and was directed to appear at Hamden Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Delaware County Public Health reported another COVID death in their report covering Saturday through Monday, bringing their total to 68. They reported 79 new positive cases, a positivity rate of 10.85%, 245 active cases and 268 quarantined.

The Village of Bainbridge Board of Trustees will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting tonight at 6:30 PM in the Bainbridge Town Hall at 15 North Main Street; masks are required in order to attend the meeting.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the legal service providers who will be awarded portions of the $25 million in federal funding to offer free legal assistance and comprehensive housing stability services. The legal assistance is aimed at helping both tenants and landlords resolve rent-related disputes & maintaining tenants' housing stability. Locally, the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, awarded $3,998,452 to serve the Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, Central New York and parts of the North Country.

Delaware County Public Health Announced Another Death From COVID 19, bringing their total to 64 since the pandemic began. The County reports 30 new cases with a 4.9% positivity rate for tests conducted Tuesday & Wednesday, they have 103 active cases, 3 hospitalized & 123 quarantined, and 52% of Delaware County Residents are vaccinated against COVID 19.

Norwich Police arrested a Texas man following a high speed chase Late Wednesday Night. Norwich Police arrested 46 year old Ronald Alexander Jr. of Pharr, Texas for criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon, Unlawful Fleeing Police, reckless endangerment, & Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Pharr faces court action shortly, the investigation is ongoing.

Otsego County sheriff's deputies arrested 52 year old Timothy Arnold of Edmeston for 1st-degree disseminating indecent material to minors and failure to notify an account change for a sex offender. Arnold was arrested Tuesday following the execution of a search warrant at his residence, he is accused of requesting nude pictures and he allegedly solicited sex from a minor, he also failed to register his social media accounts to authorities which is required by paroled sex offenders.

The State Attorney General's Office announced the indictment of Trooper Christopher Baldner, for 2nd degree Murder, 2nd degree Manslaughter and Reckless Endangerment. The indictment alleges that Trooper Baldner, while on patrol along the State Thruway in Ulster County in December, used his police vehicle to ram a car occupied by the Goods family, causing the car to flip over, resulting in the death of 11-year-old Monica Goods. Additionally, the indictment alleges that, in September of 2019, Baldner similarly endangered the lives of 3 passengers by using his police vehicle to ram their car. Baldner was arraigned and was remanded, Baldner a bail hearing will be held today.

Federal prosecutors in Broome County Have charged Connor Spells of Sacketts Harbor following an undercover investigation regarding child pornography and an attempt to meet an underage female for inappropriate sexual behavior. Spells is accused of driving to Broome County to meet with a 10- year-old girl, he was met by officers and was charged with attempted enticement of a minor and distribution of child pornography Spells is being held pending future court action.

Area Emergency Services Departments are keeping an eye on potential flooding issues, after several inches of rain fell yesterday. Minor Flooding was reported in Margaretville, while Delaware County officials anticipated possible mild flooding in Hancock. The New York State Division of Consumer Protection and the State Department of Public Service is alerting consumers of phone calls in which scammers, pretending to be from electric companies are looking for overdue payments and threatening to suspend electricity services unless they receive a payment immediately. Payment has been requested by means of untraceable services such as gift cards, and money transfer apps, including PayPal and consumer complaints can be filed at dos.ny.gov/consumer protection.

Chenango County Public Health confirmed their 84th COVID-19 attributed death today.  Chenango County Public Health has 105 active cases, including 33 vaccinated cases; they have 277 quarantined, & 2 hospitalized.    Only 57% of Chenango County Residents have had at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, more Pfizer vaccine clinics are expected to be scheduled next week, more information is available by calling 337-1660.

The Broome County Health Department announced that they have had to reopen their rapid COVID testing site.   Residents can get tested on weekdays from 3:00 to 6:00 PM by appointment only, in front of the health department on Front Street in Binghamton.  The announcement follows that the rapid increase in COVID cases in the county has once again increased demand for the testing, as some local health care providers were becoming overwhelmed with testing requests.  More information is available at 778-2802.

The New York State Department of Labor today announced the state’s $15 minimum wage phase-in will continue, with the next stage taking effect December 31, 2021. The minimum wage will rise to $15 per hour on Long Island and in Westchester, matching the New York City minimum; the minimum wage should rise to $13.20 per hour in the rest of the state.

Shane Santiago of Otego was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison in Otsego County Court Monday for 2nd degree manslaughter, from the July 15, 2020, crash that killed 2 people in Pittsfield on county Route 13.  Tehya Gonzalez and Cheyenn Aubry were passengers in his Santiago’s car, which drove off the road at 85 miles an hour, killing them both. Santiago survived and was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the implementation of booster doses into the State's COVID-19 vaccination program Monday.  In accordance with CDC's recommendations,  individuals must have received the Pfizer vaccine for their initial vaccine series at least six months ago will be eligible, along with those who have underlying health issues. Individuals who received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine are not currently eligible for a booster dose, but may be in the near future.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies patrolling State Highway 10 in the Town of Delhi last Friday night, observed and stopped a vehicle that was being operated erratically, crossing the solid yellow center lines.   41-year-old Melissa Pycroft of Hobart was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or more, failure to keep right and moving from lane unsafely.    Pycroft was released on appearance tickets directing her to appear in the Town of Delhi Court on a later date to answer the charges.

The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood and platelet shortage and must collect 10,000 additional blood products each week over the next month for the blood supply to recover and meet hospital and patient needs. State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker has tendered his resignation to Governor Kathy Hochul today, and she has accepted the resignation.  Dr. Zucker has presided over the State Department of Health for almost 7 1/2 years; a search for his successor will begin shortly.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Ubiquity Solar will establish its U.S. solar photovoltaic manufacturing operations at the former IBM site in Endicott.  The company expects to repurpose 800,000 square-feet of space at the former campus, representing an approximately $61 million investment, Ubiquity Solar expects to create up to 150 highly skilled jobs, they expect to be fully operational at the Endicott campus by the end of 2022.

Delaware County Public Health continues to see an increase in COVID 10 cases, with 29 new cases in the last 2 days for an 8.9% positivity rate, they have 196 active cases, 5 hospitalized and 383 quarantined.  50.1% of the total population is vaccinated, 73% of the positive cases are unvaccinated, and 27% of the positive cases are Pre-K-12th students/employees.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli identified 19 local governments this year that are in fiscal stress, including 6 counties, 4 cities, and 9 towns. The report is based on financial information of local governments operating on a calendar year basis from January 1st to December 31st, locally, only Broome County was listed as "susceptible to fiscal stress".

State Police and local law enforcement will be participating in the national "U Drive, U Text, U Pay" mobilization to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month nationwide, & Law enforcement throughout the state will be stepping up patrols during this enforcement initiative, which runs today through Monday, April 12th.  The initiative follows the recent death of Trooper Joe Gallagher, who died last month from injuries sustained in 2017 when he was struck by a vehicle where the driver was distracted by texting on a cellphone.

The State Health department continues to work to get as many New Yorkers Vaccinated as soon as possible.  So Far, 35.1% of New Yorkers have received at least 1 vaccine dose and 22.3% have completed their vaccine series.  Over 223,000 total doses were administered over the past 24 hours and over 11, Million total doses administered to date.

Chenango County Public Health reported 12 new COVID 19 cases today; they have 114 Active Cases, 7 hospitalized & 346 Active Quarantines. The County reported 2912 Confirmed Cases with 2655 Recoveries & they have tested over 96700 patients.

Binghamton Mayor Rich David announced today that an agreement has been reached on a 25 year lease extension between the City of Binghamton and the Ross Park Zoo.  Mayor David said that the Ross Park Zoo is currently the 5th oldest in the United States.

State Police investigated a shooting in the city of Oneonta Tuesday afternoon.   Oneonta Police responded to a report of a domestic incident on River Street, where they encountered a male subject armed with a knife, an officer fired his weapon, striking the subject, who later died at Albany Medical Center.  State Police have identified the deceased as 23 year old Tyler Green of Oneonta; the officer is identified as Sergeant Ralph Pajerski of the City of Oneonta Police Department. The investigation has been turned over to the State Attorney General's office.

The Town of Sidney will hold a public hearing tonight at 7:00 PM, regarding possible zoning law changes affected Sidney Center, Sidney Town Supervisor Gene Pigford commented:

Delaware County Public Health will be conducting a first dose Moderna COVID-19 vaccination clinic today at 97 Main Street Delhi from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.  Registration is mandatory, at apps2.health.ny.gov/doh2.  Public Health reported 16 new COVID 19 cases yesterday, out of 425 tested; they have 157 active cases, 308 quarantined & 10 hospitalized.

Governor Cuomo held a COVID briefing today in Albany; he said that a meeting with President Biden by the national Board of Governors brought the states the news of some relief:

Cuomo said that the President also announced a 16% increase in COVID vaccines coming to the state, bringing New York's Numbers closer to 300,000 a week.

The State Health Department is keeping up with their schedule of COVID testing around the state; with over 202,000 tested Tuesday, just over 11,000 were positive, the positivity rate is down to 5.4%.  Hospitalization declined to 8771, there are 1588 in an ICU Bed, & 1027 are on ventilators, there were 170 deaths Tuesday from the virus.

Chenango County Public Health confirmed 2 more COVID19 related deaths, bringing the County's toll to 37.  Chenango County officials reported 180 Active Cases, with 18 hospitalized & 531 Quarantined.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond announced that the Sheriff’s Office has received grant funding through the Chenango Health Network that will help train emergency services personnel, law enforcement & others to identify persons with a mental disorder and employ crisis de-escalation techniques:

Spring 2021 classes began remotely at SUNY Oneonta this week, and the college has put a comprehensive plan with input from students, faculty, staff, public health experts, community leaders and elected officials, for a safe semester. Delaware County Public Health reported 2 new cases of COVID Tuesday, they report 21 hospitalized, 166 active cases and 348 quarantined & they reported 3 more deaths, the county has had 35 deaths since the spring.

The State Labor Department released Unemployment rates for local counties for the month of December.  Locally, Chenango County had 5.6% Delaware County 5.6% and Otsego County 5.8%, the state wide rate was 8.2% in December.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that no new players were voted in Tuesday, but they could still have a ceremony in July, depending on the COVID situation.  Last Year's inductees, Derek Jeter and Larry Walker had their ceremonies postponed because of the pandemic, but would be honored this year.

The Village of Sidney crews discovered a Water Main Break at about 4:30 this morning, located near Valley View Drive.  Sidney Water customers along State Route 8 near Guilford will have their water service interrupted during the repairs, they hope to have the repairs completed by about 12:00 Noon today.

The Governor said that the fall and winter surge could lead to 11,000 people hospitalized with COVID and 3,500 additional fatalities in a month if the current rate continues.

Chenango County Public Health reported 2 more deaths today from COVID-19.  The County reports 130 active cases, 8 active hospitalizations, 552 quarantines, there were 12 more positive cases, bringing the county total to 880. There have been 714 recoveries, 16 total deaths & over 50,000 tests have been performed.

The Town of Sidney will be holding a Special Meeting and receive public comments and act on the proposed Annexation request from the Village of Sidney for 2 parcels totaling 5.6 acres along County Route 4 in Sidney.  The meeting will take place on Monday December 28th at 7:00 p.m. at 44 Grand Street in Sidney.

The Cooperstown Central School District announced today that they will go to all remote learning until January 19th.  The district reported 1 new COVID 19 case, and a rising number of close contacts to that case, as the reason to go to remote learning.

The Otsego County Board of representatives approved of a measure to add to the staff of the County Health Department.  The Health Department continues to respond to the rising number of COVID 19 cases, at least 3 more health professionals will be added to the staff for the fight against the ongoing pandemic.

Governor Cuomo directed state agencies to prepare emergency response assets as a coastal storm system is expected to bring heavy snow & strong winds beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Thursday morning.    The track of the storm is still developing, early forecasts and models show it has the potential to deliver 7 to 12 inches of snow and sleet across the New York City, Long Island, Southern Tier and the Mid-Hudson Regions.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 11 new COVID 19 cases, 17 are hospitalized & they report another death, giving them 9 since the spring.  Otsego County has had 1597 total confirmed cases, with 146 active cases, 840 of the cases come from the Oneonta colleges.

Delaware County Public Health announced that there were 16 positive new cases of COVID 19 Monday there were 99 active cases, 4 are hospitalized, 384 are quarantined, and Delaware County has had 528 total cases with 420 recoveries & 9 deaths.

Chenango County Public Health announced that they have 13 more positive cases & another death from COVID 19.  The county reports a 14th death, 99 Active Cases, 480 Active Quarantines 7 people are hospitalized.  Chenango County has had 767 Total Confirmed Cases, 647 recoveries & they have conducted over 48,300 tests.

Governor Cuomo today announced the launch of the New York Forward Small Business Lease Assistance Partnership. The program will provide small businesses and their landlords that have struggle during the COVID 19 Pandemic, with informational resources and pro bono assistance to help both parties reach mutually-beneficial lease workout agreements. This service is available to all New York State small businesses and landlords, and participation is voluntary.   Additionally, the New York Forward Loan Fund continues to provide working capital loans of up to $100,000 to help small businesses and non-profit organizations reopen.

Delaware County Sheriff's deputies arrested 21 year old Jessica Winans of Unadilla after a report of a motor vehicle accident on River Road in the Town of Sidney.  Upon arrival Troopers observed that Winans exhibited signs of intoxication during their interview.   Winans was charged with DWI, operating a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08% or more, operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile phone, as well as other charges. Winans was released to appear in the Town of Sidney Court on a later date.

Otsego County Department of Health had 21 new COVID 19 cases reported Wednesday, giving the county 1496 total confirmed cases,  143 active cases,  17 are hospitalized, there have been 8 deaths;  767 cases linked to SUNY Oneonta & 71 confirmed cases linked to Hartwick College

Delaware County Public Health reported 11 new cases of COVID 19 Wednesday, with 96 active cases, 8 hospitalizations & 320 in quarantine.  Delaware County has had 475 total cases, 370 recoveries & 9 deaths.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame has announced that Al Michaels will be the 45th recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. He will be honored during induction weekend in July 2021.  Michaels became lead broadcaster on ABC’s “Monday Night Baseball” telecasts in 1983. He was in the booth when an earthquake struck at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1989.

Barbara Ann Heegan will resign shortly from the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce, to be the next president and CEO of the Greenwood South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.   Heegan starts January 4th, the Chamber Board of Directors announced the appointment of Alan Rubin as Interim President & CEO effective Tuesday, December 29th.

State Police arrested 26 year old Nicholas Weathers of Endicott for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawfully Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle.  Troopers spotted a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, they stopped the vehicle and began to interview Weathers, When troopers asked him to step out of his vehicle, and he drove off.   Weathers parked in Endicott and took off on foot, he was taken into custody.  Weathers was found in possession of a loaded handgun; he does not possess a pistol permit.  Weathers was transported to Wilson Hospital for an evaluation, he was later processed at Broome Central Processing.

State health department tested over 173,000 New Yorkers Tuesday, with 6265 testing positive, or 3.6% of all tested.  41 died from the virus Tuesday, the state death toll is 26,482 & 2982 are hospitalized.

Chenango County Public Health continues to see smaller increases in COVID 19 cases; they reported 72 Active Cases, 5 hospitalizations & 410 Quarantines.  Chenango County reported 20 more cases since Monday, they have had 583 Confirmed Cases since March, with 503 Recoveries & over 43,400 Tests have been performed.

Broome County Health Department reported 85 more cases of COVID 19 today; they have had a total of 4937 cases.  They report 116 deaths, 4202 recoveries & about 2900 are being monitored by the department.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies are participating in a special traffic enforcement initiative to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors during the Thanksgiving holiday, starting today through Sunday.   State Police will supplement regular patrols statewide with fixed sobriety checkpoints, underage drinking enforcement, and the "Operation Hang Up" initiative, which targets distracted drivers by utilizing Concealed Identity patrols. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee & the STOP-DWI Foundation remind motorists that their "Have a Plan" mobile app is available, locate and call for a taxi or rideshare service.

Rockefeller the Owl was released back into the wild early this morning.  The owl made the trip from West Oneonta to New York City on the tree that will be the official Rockefeller Center Christmas tree this year, the owl was found by workers & was turned over to the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, it is expected to acclimate itself to the local Owl Population.

The Norwich City School District Board of Education announced that Scott Ryan will be the next Superintendent of the District; Ryan is expected to take over for Interim Superintendent Diana Bowers in January.

Oswego State Supreme Court Justice Scott DelConte has ordered an injunction stopping the review of ballots in the 22nd Congressional District race between Anthony Brindisi & Claudia Tenney.  Judge DelConte stated that any new motions need to be filed by the campaigns’ attorneys by 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 30th; however, the State Board of Elections set a deadline of November 28th for county boards of elections to certify and transmit their election returns to the state.  Tenney was leading Brindisi by about 200 votes when the counting of absentee ballots was stopped.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 21 new COVID 19 Cases reported Tuesday, 42 recent cases are linked to the Copper Fox in Oneonta, the department also reports a Potential exposure to COVID at the Red Jug Pub on Friday November 20th, patrons at that time should monitor for symptoms until December 4th.  Currently, Otsego County has had 1236 total confirmed cases, with 115 active cases, 6 hospitalized; there have been 8 deaths since March.  764 cases are linked to SUNY Oneonta & 71 confirmed cases linked to Hartwick College

Oneonta City School District announced that they have learned of a 5th staff member COVID 19 positive case & 1 confirmed case in a student. All District schools will go fully remote until Tuesday, January 19th & then return to hybrid instruction on January 19th.  81 students are in quarantine & 27 staff members are also in quarantine.   Meal distribution will continue to take place at the designated meal distribution points on Wednesdays.

Delaware County Public Health announced that they had 9 more cases of COVID 19 Tuesday, with 5 hospitalizations, 49 active cases & 222 in quarantine.  Delaware County has had 324 total cases of COVID 19, with 266 recoveries & 9 deaths.

The Sidney Central School District has been notified that 3 members of the District have tested positive for COVID-19. The Department of Health Services is conducting and completing the contact tracing. The Health Department will be contacting people impacted by a potential exposure. There will be no change to the instructional model at this time. The district is working in collaboration with local health departments to make sure all necessary procedures are followed.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 9.7% to 9.6%. Locally, Chenango County had 5% unemployment, Delaware County had 5.2% and Otsego County had 5.6% in October.

State Senator Jen Metzger of the 42nd Senate District, conceded the race to Republican Michael Martucci Tuesday.  There were 30,000 absentee ballots that needed to be counted in that district; the results confirmed Martucci's Election Day lead in the race.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors adopted the county budget at their meeting Tuesday, several department heads received pay raises.  The budget has a property tax levy increase of about 1.7%

The American Hockey Board of Governors announced that they have moved the anticipated start date of the next season on February 5th 2021, due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.  Further details about the next season will be announced at a later date.

28 organizations were awarded grants totaling $454,200 from the Community Foundation for South Central New York. Chenango County Public Health announced 9 more COVID 19 positive cases Thursday, they still have 48 active cases, 278 quarantines, & 6 hospitalized.  They report a total of 397 total cases since March, with 333 recoveries & 7 deaths.

Hartwick College reported two new cases of COVID-19 have been detected. There are 15 active cases on campus; the total number of cases detected on campus since August 1, 2020 is 36.

State Police is reminding people to be aware of when someone calls and requests payment in the form of gift cards.  Scammers will say you owe money to the IRS, Social Security, the U.S. Marshal’s Office or some other government entity.  The scammers will even use scare tactics and say there’s a family emergency.  Do not give out your personal information over the phone, do not allow someone to remotely connect to your computer, do not cash check you are not anticipating.

Delaware County Sheriff's Department arrested 19 year old Dakota Hall of Fleischmanns for 2nd degree murder following a domestic dispute in Fleischmanns Thursday night.  Deputies, State Police & EMT's responded at about 10:50 PM Thursday night to a reported stabbing at a residence on Main Street. The stabbing victim, 27-year-old Eric Hall, was taken to Margaretville Memorial Hospital and died for injuries sustained in the attack.  Dakota Hall was taken into custody without incident by Deputies for allegedly stabbing his brother; Hall was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail pending future court action.  The investigation is ongoing.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies investigated a head-on collision in the Town of Franklin on Wednesday afternoon.  Deputies reported that at about 5:30 PM, they responded with EMT's to the accident on County Highway 21 near Leland Hull Road.  Deputies determined that a vehicle driven by 50 year-old Jeffrey Lewis of Walton crossed over the center line and collided with a vehicle driven by 62 year-old Wayne Knorr of Laurens, causing the Knorr vehicle to overturn several times.  Knorr was taken to Fox Hospital in Oneonta for a head injury; Lewis was taken to Delaware Valley Hospital also for the treatment of a head injury.  Lewis’ driving privileges were revoked as a result of previous alcohol related offense, he was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device, failure to keep right and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, he was released to appear in Town of Franklin court at a later date.  Alcohol was not a contributing factor in this accident.

The Chenango County Health Department announced that their contact tracing team interviewed a confirmed positive COVID-19 case, that individual reported having visited the Greene Community Fitness Center at 7 South Canal Street in Greene between October 11th & 14th during the infectious period.   Any individual frequenting this establishment during the time indicated below should closely monitor themselves for COVID symptoms, those who exhibit symptoms should self-quarantine and contact their medical provider.  Chenango County Public Health announced their latest COVID 19 statistics today.  Currently they have 47 Active Cases, 230 Quarantines with 2 hospitalizations.  They have had 347 Total Confirmed Cases, 253 Total Recoveries, 7 deaths & they have conducted over 33,900 tests, more information is available at 337-1660.

Governor Cuomo announced $357 million in funding for the renewal of 135 paving projects throughout the State. Locally $42.4 million will go for rehabilitating I-88 from exit 17 Colliersville/Cooperstown Junction to exit 18 Schenevus in Otsego County, $3.2 million will be used to resurface Route 8 from the Village of Sidney Line to south of the intersection of Routes 37 and 51 in Mount Upton & $4.5 million to resurface Route 206 from Route 27 in the Hamlet of Trout Creek to the Village of Walton Line.

Broome County Health Department announced that they have 103 new COVID 19 cases and 55 recoveries, the county's active cases up to 646.  There was another death reported, bringing the county's death count up to 89, the number of people hospitalized went up by 5 to a total of 19.  The total number of cases is up to 3060, 2325 have recovered.  The County has a 3.7% positivity rate; it's over 9% in the state designated "Yellow" zone.

The Oneonta City School District have switched middle and high school students to remote learning yesterday & again today after being notified of a teacher testing positive.  NO student or any faculty/staff member is deemed a “close contact” to the affected teacher, according to a district letter; all elementary buildings will open as normal. Middle & High School students are scheduled to return on the previous hybrid schedule Monday.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 10 new cases of COVID 19 Thursday; they are investigating a cluster of cases that originated at a wedding that has now spread into the community.  Current COVID numbers, they report 952 total confirmed cases, 27 active cases with  2 hospitalizations, they've had 7 deaths,  747 probable and confirmed cases linked to SUNY Oneonta &  Hartwick College reported 2 more cases of COVID-19 have been detected, they have 3 active cases on campus; the total number of cases is 24.

Delaware County Public Health reported 4 new cases of COVID 19 Thursday, with 12 active cases, 3 hospitalizations, & 73 in quarantine.  Delaware County is up to 149 cases since March with 8 deaths and 129 recoveries.

Van Buren said that The Afton VFW building needs renovations; the building was built in 1898.  Contributions can also be mailed to P.O. Box 238, Afton NY 13730.  The combined effort will be held at Gavin’s Sunday from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM.

DEA's next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, many local police departments also have drop boxes available year round to get expired medications or unused narcotics out of the waste stream or out of criminal hands.  A listing of local law enforcement agencies & fire Departments participating can be found at the WCDO Facebook page.
