The Delaware County Board of Elections Office will be open extra hours in the days leading up to the General Elections on November 6th. Added Hours will be today until 7:00 PM for absentee voting, Saturday November 3rd from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Following a court decision this week, The Oneonta Fire District will officially dissolve tomorrow. The Oneonta town board will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. to hold a public hearing on the 2019 town budget and discuss the formation of the new fire district.
The State DMV announced that November is "STOP-DWI Month" in New York State. The STOP-DWI Program was established in November of 1981 to coordinate state and local efforts to reduce impaired-driving offenses and to prevent crashes across the state. Since the program was enacted, fatalities from alcohol-related crashes on New York’s roadways have decreased 74%.
A man reported missing whose vehicle was found abandoned in Oneonta has been located deceased. State Police located 53-year-old Steven J. Kassirer deceased in a ravine within heavy brush, behind Safelite Auto Glass on Oneida Street in Oneonta. Troopers located Kassirer's vehicle earlier in the week in the Safe Lite parking lot, he was reported missing in Irondequoit and was also reported missing in Massachusetts when he did not report to his place of employment on October 23. No foul play is suspected at this time but the cause of death is still pending autopsy results.
The Bainbridge-Guilford Central School will hold a Board of Education Meeting Today, in the Guilford Elementary School Cafeteria at 6:30 PM. The business portion of the meeting will start at 7:00 PM.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce “Business After Hours” will be held today, at the Sidney Memorial Library. The event will run from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, members will get a chance to meet with new Library Director Beth Paine.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 69 year old Robert Walker of Davenport for criminal impersonation unauthorized use of emergency lights, unauthorized lights, failure to keep right, speed unreasonable and prudent and following too closely & official misconduct. Walker is accused of using a Volunteer Fire Department emergency blue light on his personal vehicle to conducted a traffic stop on another vehicle in the Town of Davenport without official authority to do so. Walker was issued appearance tickets for Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
During National School Bus Safety Week, the State DMV and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee are reminding motorists to stop and wait whenever they encounter a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and “stop” sign extended. Drivers who pass a stopped school bus illegally could be ticketed and face fines and other penalties. Motorists should also watch for students as they walk or bike to school and always follow the posted speed limits. Drivers convicted of passing a stopped school bus face a fine of $250 to $400, five points on their driver license, and up to 30 days jail time for a first violation. Three violations in three years can result in a maximum fine of $1,000, five points, a six-month license revocation, registration revocation, and up to six months jail time.
The Oneonta Department of Public Service will be flushing water mains in the low service area starting 9:00 AM to 4:00 pm Friday. Flushing is expected to go into the better part of next week, in the Chestnut Street Area & Winnie Hill Road neighborhood. During flushing, water users may experience a change in water color, water pressure or loss of water. More information is available at 432-2100.

Officials announced today that applications are now available; they usually begin hiring in September of each year, with the goal of having them ready to plow snow when winter begins. Candidates must Be at least 18 years old, Pass a physical and drug test, Have a valid, clean Class A or B commercial driver license & Be certified to operate DOT heavy dump trucks within 2 weeks after the start of DOT employment. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a 1 car property damage automobile accident in the Town of Harpersfield. 62 year old Ralph Leonard of Hobart is accused of leaving the scene before officers arrived, Deputies traveled to Leonard’s residence, where a marijuana growing operation was observed. Leonard was charged with Criminal possession of marijuana, Unlawfully Growing Cannabis, f Criminal possession of a controlled substance, Obstructing governmental administration & Aggravated unlicensed operation, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $4,000 cash bail or $8,000 bond.
Otsego County Sheriff's Department arrested 21 year old Jared Talbot of Oneonta after an animal cruelty investigation involving pigs in the Town of Laurens. Talbot is accused of overriding torturing or injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance in violation of the NYS Agriculture and Markets Law. Talbot will appear in the Town of Laurens Court on a later date.
Former New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos was sentenced on Wednesday to four years and three months in prison on federal corruption charges, including soliciting bribes and defrauding the public. Prosecutors accused the elder Skelos of using his position to pressure three companies to provide his son with consulting work, a “no-show” job and a $20,000 payment.
The State Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction issued a new report describing steps currently being taken to address the state's opioid crisis. The report includes 11 recommendations, Including Increasing resources to support the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals trained to treat substance use disorder; Upgrade the I-STOP Program to improve interstate monitoring of potential over-prescribing of opioids, Reduce the cost of naloxone to treat overdoses, & Explore the further limitation of initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain to 3 days from the current 7days, with certain medical exceptions; more information is available at nysenate.gov/committees/heroin-task-force. Governor Cuomo will debate Democratic Party Challenger, actress Cynthia Nixon in a debate at Hofstra University in Nassau County this evening. The debate will begin at 7:00 PM, Nixon trails Cuomo in the polls by a large margin, and this is the only debate scheduled between the 2 before the September 13th primary. The Winner will face Republican Marcus Molinaro, who also trails Cuomo by a large margin in recent polls.
State Police arrested 49 year old Christine Pecoraro of Oneonta for Aggravated DWI with a B.A.C of .28%, following an accident on State Route 357 in Franklin. Troopers found a vehicle in the lawn of a residence, after an investigation, Pecoraro was arrested & was arraigned in the town of Davenport Court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond. Her next court appearance is September 27th.

Governor Cuomo announced a joint effort by state agencies to crack down on underage drinking on college campuses and in college towns as the fall semester begins. The State Liquor Authority and the State DMV, working with local law enforcement agencies, will conduct statewide sweeps of locations holding liquor licenses, including bars, restaurants, liquor stores and grocery stores, looking for fake IDs and illegal sales to minors. The combined enforcement effort will begin immediately, Persons under the age of 21 found to be using fake IDs or false documents with the intent of purchasing alcohol can be arrested and have their license revoked for a minimum of 90 days or up to one year. Businesses charged by the State Liquor Authority with underage sales face civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, and repeat offenders also face potential suspension or revocation of their liquor licenses.
The Water System Staff in the Mount Upton Water District was notified Tuesday afternoon of a loss of pressure, which may increase the risk of contamination. The Health Department is advising district residents to boil water before drinking or using for food preparation. The repair has been made, and the Water District expects that the Boil Water notice could be cancelled later today after testing.
State Police arrested 32 Year Old Brent Fallon of Endwell for Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, following an explosion & fully engulfed house fire on Wayne Street Sunday. Broome County fire investigators and State Police revealed that the basement had precursors for the manufacture of methamphetamine. Fallon was arrested and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the town Union Court on September 4th.
Commerce Chenango and the Hamilton Business Alliance will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Rogers Environmental Education Center. Business and community leaders are invited to attend the “Business After Hours” event from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Rogers Environmental Education Center on Route 80 in Sherburne.
