Delaware Valley Humane Society & Waste Recovery Enterprises are teaming up for the Spring "Heavy Metal Haul-Out" through the end of this month. Interested participants can bring scrap metal to the large bin across from WRE on Valley View Road off of State Route 7 in Sidney. WRE donates the money they get for the scrap metal to the Delaware Valley Humane Society.

Sidney voters approved the budget, the purchase of 2 Diesel busses & the library budget, budgets and propositions passed in Franklin, GMU, BG, Unatego & Afton. The National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum today announced that artifacts from Team Venezuela, have been acquired by the Hall, after Venezuela’s 3-2 win over Team USA, to win the World Baseball Classic Tuesday night in Miami Florida. The Museum acquired Helmet worn by WBC Most Valuable Player Maikel Garcia in the championship game, Venezuela-themed shoes worn by closer Danny Palencia in the championship game, Batting gloves worn by Eugenio Suárez when he hit the game-winning double. State Police arrested 25 year old Cagan Sodan of Greene after he was involved in a domestic dispute. State Police responded to a residence on English Lane in Greene, a Trooper encountered Sodan, who was uncooperative & attempted to grab the Trooper’s service weapon from its holster. The Trooper was able to restrain Sodan and take him into custody. Sodan did have an injury to his hand that he sustained from punching a window, prior to his encounter with the Trooper. The Trooper was not injured. Sodan has been charged with Attempted Robbery, Attempted Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief & Obstructing Governmental Administration, he was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded until his next court date on January 8, 2026.

A Windsor man is facing felony charges after attempting to break into a residence and being tracked down in the snow by Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies in the Town of Chenango. On Tuesday evening, Road Patrol responded to a burglar alarm on Russell Road, members noticed that the back door of the residence had been forced open, they eventually found footprints in the snow, they found 42 year old Scott Evanchof of Windsor wearing boots that matched the footprints, he admitted that he attempted to break into the residence & was charged with Burglary & Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned Following arraignment, Evanchof was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, where he is currently in custody.

Sidney Police Department received a fraud complaint, where teh vicitm was scammed by an elaborate scheme to defraud and had already lost $57,000. The scammers were able to gain the trust of the victim by posing as a Microsoft computer virus technician and a bank fraud technician, Police learned that the victim was being directed to withdraw another large sum of money by the scammers, Sidney Police & the State Police BCI unit set up a sting operation, which led to the arrested of 42 year old Xueyu Luo of New York City into custody. Luop was charged Grand larceny, Tampering with physical evidence, Scheme to defraud, Resisting arrest and Obstruction of governmental administration, Luo was processed & was transported to the Delaware County Jail to await arraignment, He was released on his own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing.

Oneonta Fire Department responded at about 1:30 this morning to a structure fire at 5 Grand Street. An Occupant in 1 of the apartments reported a kitchen fire, crews found light smoke showing from the exterior of the building, they encountered heavy smoke and poor visibility on the 2nd floor, they located the involved apartment and quickly extinguished the fire. The Department reported that all 6 residents from the 3 affected apartments have been displaced and will remain so until repairs can be completed. 1 occupant was taken to A.O. Fox Hospital for evaluation, 1 resident's cat perished in the fire. Assistance was provided by the Sidney Fire Department FAST Team, West Oneonta Fire Department was on stand-by, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

41 year old Brian Canfield of Greene appeared in Delaware County Court for sentencing for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Back on February 17th, Sidney police observed a vehicle parked and running with headlights on at the Sidney Memorial Public Library after the library was closed, a male was slumped over in the driver’s seat. Canfield failed the Standard Field Sobriety Testing, & drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle, Canfield admitted that he was under the influence of Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, and Fentanyl. Canfield was sentenced to 5 years’ felony probation, if he violates the conditions of his probation, he is subject to being re-sentenced to 1 and 1/3 to 4 years in State Prison.

Canfield appeared in Delaware County Court for a conference on his pending indictment, On February 17, 2024, Sidney Police Officer Royce Terry observed a motor vehicle parked in the library parking lot after it was closed, with Canfield slumped over the steering wheel, and the engine was running, Canfield was under the influence of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl. Canfield will be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, he faces sentencing on September 23rd.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Sean Gillespie of Delhi on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court to answer to a drug related charge, issued out of the Town of Delhi. On May 9th, Deputies were contacted by the City Oneonta Police Department, who advised that they who had taken Gillespie into custody, he was turned over to central arraignment processing at the Delaware County Jail to await arraignment.
2 Red Cross Blood Drives will be held today, one at the Sidney American Legion on Union Street from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, another in Cooperstown at the Bassett Hall Auditorium from 12:30 TO 6:30 P.M. Appointments can be made at 1-800 RED CROSS, REDCROSSBLOOD.ORG or with the RED CROSS BLOOD DONOR APP.
