State Police responded to a 2 vehicle fatal collision on I-88 Wednesday night in the Town of Colesville. 23 year old David Murrer of Harpursville struck another motor vehicle, driven by 64 year old Synthia Baciuska & occupied by her husband 67 year old Lynn Baciuska both of Afton. The Baciuska vehicle left the roadway and overturned, Mr. Baciuska was ejected & was declared dead at the scene, Mrs. Baciuska was transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Murrer suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene, he was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter and DWI & was arraigned in Town of Colesville Court & he was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. Anyone who may have information regarding this accident or witnessed this incident is requested to contact State Police at 775-1241. The investigation is continuing.
State Police in Binghamton are looking for information that may lead to the whereabouts of a Binghamton man who fled from troopers in a reported stolen vehicle. On Tuesday, December 27th, state troopers pulled over 28 year old Ryan Markoff of Binghamton, in the town of Kirkwood, after he was observed driving a vehicle that was reported stolen. Markoff drove off as troopers were interviewing him and headed north into the city of Binghamton. State Police pursued Markoff through the city, and terminated the pursuit shortly after he entered Pennsylvania. Markoff was last seen driving a blue 2011 Kia Sorento, New York registration FPX 4416. He may have possibly traveled to Montrose, Pennsylvania and is known to frequent the Windsor and Hancock areas. Anyone with information is asked to contact the New York State Police in Binghamton at (607) 775-1241.
Governor Cuomo announced that new health insurance reforms aimed at combatting New York State's heroin and opioid crisis will go into effect January 1st. These reforms were part of the legislative package that the Governor signed this year, health insurance plans will be required to cover treatment services provided to New Yorkers suffering from opioid addiction, increase access to treatment, expand community prevention strategies, and limit the over-prescription of opioids in New York.
Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced on Thursday that there have been 76 confirmed overdose deaths in Broome County this year. Of the 76 deaths, The average age was 37, 63% were male; 37% were female, 90% of the deaths were attributed to heroin or opioids; 10% to other drugs.
Governor Cuomo today announced the launch of a new public awareness campaign reminding New Yorkers that the first increase to the minimum wage will go into effect on December 31st. Governor Cuomo signed legislation this year making New York the first state in the nation to enact a $15 minimum wage to be phased in over several years. Minimum wage workers who do not receive their raise should call 1-888-4-NYSDOL to report their employers. Locally, the minumum wage will be increased to $9.70 an hour. 32-year-old Jacob Fowlston of Norwich was arrested by Norwich Police Wednesday afternoon and charged with a hate crime, following an alleged assault on December 24th on Fair Street in Norwich. Fowlston is accused of making racial slurs at the victim before striking him. Fowlston was arraigned & faces a felony hearing on Tuesday in Norwich City Court.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker today declared influenza prevalent in New York State. With this declaration, health care workers who are not vaccinated against influenza must now wear surgical or procedure masks in areas where patients are typically present. Flu activity in the State is now considered to be widespread, with laboratory-confirmed cases in 39 counties and all boroughs of New York City. So far, 658 flu-related hospitalizations have been reported, and there have been no reports of pediatric deaths from flu.
State Lawmakers will once again have to deal with an education budget next year that could make things difficult on the smallest upstate district, according to Assemblyman Pete Lopez:

A memorial ceremony will be held tonight in Norwich for Norwich High School Class of 2016 Graduate Savannah Williams, who died in a 2-vehicle crash in Geneseo Tuesday. Kaitlyn Jackson was a friend of Williams and was also class president, she told WCDO News that tonight’s Memorial would begin at 6:00 PM at the Norwich High School Track:

Jackson said that the event would then move over the Chenango County Fair grounds. Police in Geneseo said that Williams was a current SUNY Geneseo student, she drove her car into the path of the tractor-trailer, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police arrested 45-year-old Joseph Leonard of Delhi for Assault & Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, after troopers responded to a report of a dispute at a home in the Town of Delhi. Leonard allegedly punched and choked a victim, which caused injuries. Leonard was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and was released, an order of protection was issued.
Governor Cuomo announced that underage drinking sweeps conducted by DMV investigators this year resulted in the seizure of 862 fraudulent licenses and the arrest of 818 individuals for underage drinking, both single year records. Through the year-round Operation Prevent initiative, DMV investigators work with state and local law enforcement agencies to conduct underage drinking and fake ID sweeps at bars, restaurants and concert venues across New York. The previous record of 751 seized ID documents and 758 arrests was set in 2015.
The Chenango Industrial Development Agency announced Frontier Railroad Services, completed construction on the Utica mainline project this month, which means that the rail line between Binghamton and Utica is largely restored and close to a return to service. IDA President Steve Craig explains:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 42 year old Daniel White of Delhi Wednesday on charges of DWI, driving with a BAC of .08% or greater, speed not reasonable and imprudent, failure to stop for a stop sign, and for making an unsafe lane change following an investigation of a 1 car accident at Brick House Hill Road and County Highway 12 in Davenport. White allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign due to excessive speed, he left the roadway and struck a utility pole. White was released on tickets returnable to Davenport Town Court at a later date.
2 people have been arrested after State Police discovered a meth lab on State Route 206 in the Town of Triangle Tuesday. Police arrested 37 year old Thomas Parker of Berkshire and 35 year old Stephanie Keller of Whitney Point, Police seized methamphetamine oil, marijuana plants, 1 active & 2 spent one-pot methamphetamine labs, hazardous materials & $1,970 in cash, Both have been charged with criminal possession of controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing of meth, They were arraigned in the Town of Triangle Court and taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.
State Police arrested 52-year-old Richard Fidurski of Binghamton for Promoting a Sexual Performance of a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, after an investigation by the members of the New York State Police Computer Crime Unit. Fidurski was arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. His next court date is pending.
State Police responded Wednesday to a 2 vehicle fatal collision involving a tractor-trailer and a car, on I-81 in the Town of Virgil. 59-year-old Roger Brooks of Virginia was driving a tractor-trailer; he struck a Toyota Corolla that was stopped in the driving lane, with the lights off, the tractor-trailer overturned off the shoulder of the roadway. The Toyota was driven by 40-year-old Rashida Brown, of Freeport, Long Island; Police said that she ran out of gas. Brown was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center where she died from her injuries, No tickets have been issued. The investigation is continuing.

Police said that Williams was a SUNY Geneseo student, she pulled off of Court Street, into the path of the tractor-trailer that was traveling on State Route 63. The tractor struck Williams' car, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured,
The Sidney Central School District named Kerrie Johnston as the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Special Programs. The Board of Education approved the appointment at its December 20 meeting. Johnston will supervise curriculum and instruction, school improvement, principals, special programs, and special education, starting in February.

62-year-old Almond Upton of Florida was sentenced to life in prison without of parole for deliberately running down State Trooper Christopher Skinner on I-81 in 2014. Upton was sentenced today in Broome County Court by Judge Joseph Cawley, following the 1st degree murder conviction for deliberately crossing several lanes to strike Trooper Skinner while he was conducting an unrelated routine traffic stop, at an excessive speed.
Crowds gathered at the Eichler residence on Country Club Road in Oneonta this morning to witness a 94-foot Norwegian Spruce tree being removed; it will become the 2nd tallest Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree ever. The tree was removed this morning; it will be transported to New York City, where the set up will begin Saturday. The tree will be lit up as part of a nationwide broadcast on November 30th.

In the House of Representatives 19th Congressional District Race to replace Chris Gibson, Republican John Faso is against Democrat Zephyr Teachout.
In the 22nd congressional district Race To Replace Richard Hanna, a three way battle exists between Republican Claudia Tenney, Democrat Kim Meyers & 3rd party Candidate Martin Babinec.
In area State senate races, in the 51st State Senate District, Republican incumbent Jim Seward faces Democrat Jermaine Bagnall-Graham, in the 52 District; Republican Fred Akshar faces Democrat Sharon Ball.

On the eve of another Election, retiring congressman Richard Hanna reiterated to reporters that he is not going to run for governor of the state, after he recently declined to seek another term in Congress. Hanna and another outgoing congressman Chris Gibson have both been the topic of speculation that they would run for the Republican nomination for Governor, Gibson went as far as forming an exploratory committee & then decided to go into teaching instead, and Hanna has business concerns in the Mohawk Valley.
Governor Cuomo signed legislation that secures New York's place on the list of states that have joined National Popular Vote compact. The bill modifies legislation signed by Governor Cuomo in 2014 that added New York to an interstate agreement in which member states commit to award their electoral votes for president to the candidate that receives a majority of the national popular vote. The original legislation required that New York be removed from the compact at the end of 2018 if the agreement had not been adopted nationally, the new measure removed the expiration date and keeps New York on the list of states supporting the National Popular Vote indefinitely.
Shortly after midnight Friday, Delaware County Deputies investigated a 1 car fatal motor vehicle accident on County Highway 33 in Bloomville. A 17 year old female lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, the vehicle continued over the embankment, rolled over and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene as a result of injuries suffered in the crash. There is no indication at this time that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, a blood sample was secured from the driver for toxicology analysis. The accident remains under investigation.
Last Wednesday afternoon, Oneonta Police investigated possible drug activity at 14 ½ Baker Street; Police arrested 23 year old Kwame Wilson of Utica for Criminal possession of a controlled substance & Unlawful possession of marijuana. Police recovered 23 individual packets of cocaine, $246 cash, a small quantity of marihuana, Wilson was held pending arraignment in the City of Oneonta court.
On Friday, The Broome County Sheriff’s department responded to a Motel in the town of Dickinson following a call for a medical emergency of a patient who stopped breathing an adjacent room. Deputies found 30 year old Brett Seymour unresponsive, administered Narcan, eventually EMS responded & declared that Seymour was deceased. In the room, Police found crack, cocaine, heroin; they arrested Rayshawn Thompson of Binghamton, Nicole Mills of Windsor, & Tessa Rivera of Elmira on a variety of charges. The Broome County Sheriff’s department has set up a tip line at 778-1196.
19 year old Wade Armstrong of Delancy was arrested after a hit-and-run accident at the Taylor’s Gas Station in an alleged attempt at robbing the store. Armstrong allegedly stole the vehicle from the Delancey area, drove to Oneonta & drove the vehicle into the building breaking the windows and damaging the structure & the vehicle. Armstrong was charged with two counts of Criminal mischief, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and attempted burglary as well as numerous lesser charges, he faces court action shortly.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, State Police and the Massachusetts DEA Task Force today announced the indictment of more than 2 dozen people for their roles in an alleged national heroin smuggling ring. The investigation, seized more than 33 kilos of heroin and 2 kilos of Fentanyl worth about $13 Million dollars, plus weapons & vehicles, The operation netted alleged dealers and traffickers in New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and New Jersey, it is one of the largest heroin seizures ever in New York and is the single largest single seizure in the 46-year history of the state's Organized Crime Task Force.
Federal Prosecutors last month announced charges against three members of the Sex Money Murder gang of the Bronx, which included Corey Brown, Josnel Rodriguez & Christopher Canada, for racketeering, firearms charges, & for the murder of Vincent Davis in July of 2012. Rodriguez & Brown were brought into court, but Canada was on the run from law enforcement, until he was apprehended by US Marshals & Oneonta Police in a Division Street Apartment yesterday afternoon. Canada was apprehended without incident & was returned to New York City to face prosecution.
State Police responded to a car & tractor trailer fatal crash on State Route 90 in the Town of Homer. A 61 year old Cortland man was driving a Subaru southbound, he drifted into the northbound lane and struck a tractor trailer driven by 48 year old Michael Gross of Norwich. Police said that the Subaru spun off the southbound shoulder and came to rest, the tractor trailer crossed over the southbound lanes and came to rest in a swamp, diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway, and the tractor began to burn. The unidentified Cortland man was declared dead at the scene, Gross was transported to Upstate Medical for non-life threatening injuries. The deceased driver’s name is not being released pending family notification.
Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney will hold their 2nd annual Health Fair tomorrow, which will give the community an opportunity to meet with staff, according to spokesperson Amy Beveridge:

Early bow season for deer begins in the Northern Zone at sunrise on Tuesday, September 27, and continues through October 21. In the Southern Zone, early bow season for deer and bear begins Saturday, October 1 and continues through November 18. The Broome County Sheriff Department is investigating a fatal 2-vehicle car vs. motorcycle accident Monday afternoon. Deputies reported that a Jeep Cherokee, operated by 28 year old Adam Alexander of Afton, struck a motorcycle operated by 36 year old Jason Smith of Binghamton, at State Route 235 & State Route 7. Smith suffered traumatic injuries and was transported to Wilson Hospital where he died from his injuries. Alexander was chargedd with Vehicular Manslaughter & DWI, he was arraigned in Town of Colesville Court & he was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail.
Several area fire companies responded to a structure fire at 211 Otsego County Highway 8 in Gilbertsville this morning. The fire was toned out at about 10:20, with Firefighters from throughout the Tri County region responding.
The 2016 Great New York State Fair has generated the highest level of attendance in its 175-year history, shattering numerous records over the course of its twelve-day run. A record 1,096,524 visitors passed through the Fair's redesigned main gate, beating the previous record by about 85,000 over 2001.
The Mirabito Energy group announced that they are acquiring 30 Xtramart Convenience stores in New York & Pennsylvania. The Xtramart in Bainbridge is included in the acquisition, company officials said that operations in the affected stores would not change, but additional services would be added.
Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney announced that they would hold a health fair on September 24th. Spokesperson Amy Beveridge explains:

The next meeting of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta Committee will be tonight in Bainbridge. Next year will be the 55th Regatta, committee members are asked to bring new ideas for next year, the Race meeting will begin at 6:30 & the regular meeting starts at 7:30 PM at Highway 7 Bar and Grill on Route 7 in Bainbridge.
State Police reported that 3 people were killed after a car accident in Morris on Saturday morning at about 3:15 AM. The accident occurred on State Route 23 near Pegg Road, the driver of the vehicle was 21 year old Dillon Clemens of Norwich, others killed were 22 year old Jordan Crandall of Norwich; and 22 year old Christopher Brissette of Sherburne, State police reported Clemons failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, while traveling at a high rate of speed, the left the roadway, struck multiple objects in its way, eventually went down a hill into a ravine, where it caught fire. All 3 were pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology reports are pending
A small plane crashed in the woods at Chenango Valley State Park Sunday morning after having engine failure. The crash happened Sunday at around 10:45 AM. The pilot lost control shortly after takeoff, he was not injures. State police, State Park Police and the Broome County Sheriff's Department all responded. The Investigation is continuing.
Former State Assembly Minority Leader Clarence "Rapp" Rappleyea has passed away Sunday at the age of 82, at the Albany Medical Center. Rappleyea represented Norwich in the State Assembly for 22 years, he then served as chairman of the New York Power Authority, until he retired in 2001. Funeral arrangements are pending.
William Canney of Binghamton was arrested Friday by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Menacing of a Police Officer. The Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded to a shots fired complaint on Hotchkiss Road in the Town of Greene, Canney is alleged to have pointed a loaded shotgun at a deputy, who drew his weapon and was able to deescalate the situation without any shots fired. Canney was arraigned it the Town of Greene Court and ordered to the Chenango County Jail on $2000 bail and $5000 bond and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

Aubry was found in possession of pills and kicked a window of a patrol car causing damage. He was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. He is to return to the Town Middletown Court at a later date.

The accident occurred on State Route 23 near Pegg Road, the driver of the vehicle was 21 year old Dillon Clemens of Norwich, others killed were 22 year old Jordan Crandall of Norwich; and 22 year old Christopher Brissette of Sherburne, State police reported Clemons failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, while traveling at a high rate of speed, the left the roadway, struck multiple objects in its way, eventually went down a hill into a ravine, where it caught fire. All 3 were pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology reports are pending
A small plane crashed in the woods at Chenango Valley State Park Sunday morning after having engine failure. The crash happened Sunday at around 10:45 AM. The pilot lost control shortly after takeoff, he was not injures. State police, State Park Police and the Broome County Sheriff's Department all responded. The Investigation is continuing.
Former State Assembly Minority Leader Clarence "Rapp" Rappleyea has passed away Sunday at the age of 82, at the Albany Medical Center. Rappleyea represented Norwich in the State Assembly for 22 years, he then served as chairman of the New York Power Authority, until he retired in 2001. Funeral arrangements are pending.
William Canney of Binghamton was arrested Friday by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Menacing of a Police Officer. The Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded to a shots fired complaint on Hotchkiss Road in the Town of Greene, Canney is alleged to have pointed a loaded shotgun at a deputy, who drew his weapon and was able to deescalate the situation without any shots fired. Canney was arraigned it the Town of Greene Court and ordered to the Chenango County Jail on $2000 bail and $5000 bond and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.
Delaware County Deputies arrested 26 year old Jeremy Aubry of Middletown, for Attempted Burglary, Attempted Robbery, Criminal Trespass, and Criminal Mischief & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Aubry is accused of attempting to make entry into a house on State Highway 30 in the Town of Middletown, where he attempted to rob the homeowner of a purse. Aubry was found in possession of pills and kicked a window of a patrol car causing damage. He was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. He is to return to the Town Middletown Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo today announced that non-essential lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on State highways will be suspended today until Tuesday Morning at 6:00 AM to accommodate travelers during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Delaware County Public Health announced that a raccoon has tested positive for Rabies in the town of Middletown. The Raccoon was sent to the State Rabies Lab for testing, the positive test results were received Wednesday. Officials said that there was 1 domestic animal and 1 human exposure; they are coordinating the Rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis treatment that the adult will be receiving. The animal has been placed in quarantine for 6 months due to a short lapse in rabies vaccination status. The next scheduled rabies clinic is: Delhi Fire Station on October 19th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Binghamton city officials have found out the names of 4 area people who pulled a woman out of a burning car last thursday, after a 10 vehicle pile up on state route 17 Eastbound. Doug Kumpon, Ed Staff, Chris White and Albert Fiori have been identified as 4 of the people who came to the aid of a person trapped in a burning Ford Taurus that was pushed up into the concrete median, Binghamton Mayor Richard David released a video from one of the involved vehicles dashcam, mayor David is expected to announce a ceremony to honor the 4 for their life saving actions. Several people suffered injuries, but no one died in last Thursday afternoon's 10-car collision.

The federal government has designated 24 New York counties as natural disaster areas following a severe summer drought that has adversely impacted some water supplies and farms. Farmers in the affected areas may be eligible for assistance, including emergency loans, from the federal government. The state will conduct on-site assessments of farms affected by the drought as well, Cuomo’s office said. 15 counties declared as the primary natural disaster areas cover, 1 of the contiguous counties named in the declaration is Broome County. Many other counties locally & into the North Country are requesting primary disaster declarations.
The New York State Gaming Commission granted Tioga Downs a Class III commercial gaming license on Tuesday. The license will allow Tioga Downs to complete its transformation into a full-scale casino, replacing the current Video Lottery Terminals with slot machines and allowing the facility to add Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, a Poker Room and other casino card games that would be permitted by the gaming commission. A multi-million dollar expansion is underway; Tioga Downs received the state's final license, with Tuesday's full commission endorsement.

Maine Endwell Little League is headed to the USA Finals in Williamsport, after defeating a team from Bowling Green Kentucky yesterday in the latest action of the Little League World Series. The Binghamton Mets announced that NYSEG Stadium would host the Official Watch Party for the Championship Game on Saturday at 3:30pm on the stadiums big screen. Parking will be free and there will be no admission charges. Limited concessions options will be available. Maine Endwell's team will play the winner of today's Tennessee Kentucky match up in Saturday's game.
The New York State Fair began its 12-day run today as Governor Cuomo assisted in opening up the fair again this year. The fairgrounds have undergone a $50 million makeover that includes a new main gate, a larger midway and a new camping area for recreational vehicles. Last year, more than 900,000 people visited the fair.
Governor Cuomo signed legislation to curb the power of independent expenditure campaigns unleashed by the 2010 Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission. The legislation strengthen disclosure requirements for political consultants and lobbyists who provide services to sitting elected officials or candidates for elected office by requiring them to register with the state and reveal their clients.

A Town of Greene resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Mischief & Harassment following a Domestic Dispute in the Town of Greene. Deputies arrested 56-year-old Joshua Browning who allegedly intentionally pushed the victim and prevented the victim from call 911 by damaging a phone. Browning was arraigned in the Town of Greene court and released on his own recognizance. Browning is to reappear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31-year-old Courtney Otte of Walton for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree. Deputies allege the defendant operated a motor vehicle in a northerly direction on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton while having an active suspension on her license for failure to answer a summons. Otte was additionally charged with unlicensed operation, operating a motor vehicle with an out headlight, and was released on traffic tickets returnable to Walton Town Court at a later date.

A Town of Plymouth resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on a Fugitive of Justice complaint for active Bench Warrant out of the Cleveland County Court in the State of Oklahoma. The New York State Fair began its 12-day run today as Governor Cuomo assisted in opening up the fair again this year. The fairgrounds have undergone a $50 million makeover that includes a new main gate, a larger midway and a new camping area for recreational vehicles. A Town of Greene resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for Criminal Mischief & Harassment following a Domestic Dispute in the Town of Greene. Deputies arrested 56-year-old Joshua Browning who allegedly intentionally pushed the victim and prevented the victim from call 911 by damaging a phone. Browning was arraigned in the Town of Greene court and released on his own recognizance. Browning is to reappear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31-year-old Courtney Otte of Walton for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree. Deputies allege the defendant operated a motor vehicle in a northerly direction on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton while having an active suspension on her license for failure to answer a summons. Otte was additionally charged with unlicensed operation, operating a motor vehicle with an out headlight, and was released on traffic tickets returnable to Walton Town Court at a later date.

The State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, the State Liquor Authority, the DMV, and State Police are aligning resources to prevent underage drinking on campuses, More than 1,800 college students die from alcohol-related injuries, 696,000 college students are assaulted by another student that has been drinking, 97,000 college students experience alcohol-related sexual assault.

State Police at Sidney arrested 28-year-old Brenda Manwarren, of Unadilla for operating a motor vehicle while ability impaired by drugs. This arrest occurred after a trooper responded to a report of an impaired driver in the rear parking lot of the River Side Storage on State Route 7 in the Town of Unadilla. Manwarren's blood was tested for drugs, lab results are pending. Manwarren was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Unadilla court on September 5th.
Delaware County Sheriffs Deputies arrested 69 year old James Maynard of East Meredith for unlawfully growing cannabis. Maynard had contacted authorities in reference to a missing person, when Deputies located an area within the residence which was being used to grow cannabis. Maynard was released with an appearance ticket where he will return to the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
Governor Cuomo today announced a $10,000 donation from the PGA TOUR to support the "SUNY's Got Your Back" program, a collaborative effort between the State University of New York and the State Police that funds comfort bags with personal care products for victims of sexual and interpersonal violence. The "SUNY's Got Your Back" program has already provided more than 4,000 comfort bags containing items such as toiletries, resource pages, and personal notes to victims and survivors of violence across the Empire State. Altogether, SUNY has assembled nearly 9,000 comfort bags since the start of the program.

Governor Cuomo announced that a major enhancement to the State DMV facial recognition program has led to more than 100 arrests and 900 open cases since it launched in January. The system combats identity theft and fraud and removes high-risk drivers from the road, it doubles the number of measurement points mapped to each digitized driver photograph to vastly improve the system's ability to match a photograph to one that already exists in DMV's database. Since the facial recognition technology was implemented in 2010, more than 3,800 individuals have been arrested for possessing multiple licenses. Additionally, more than 10,800 facial recognition cases have been solved administratively, without the need for an arrest.
Utica Police have arrested a man for allegedly stealing envelopes from the gift tables at 2 recent weddings. 40-year-old Joseph Ciszek of Whitesboro is charged with 1 count of grand larceny & 2 counts of Petty Larceny for the alleged thefts at weddings in July. Utica police released Surveillance pictures of a well-dressed couple, who were not invited to either wedding, Ciszek was located and was arrested as a result of tips from the community. Their investigation is continuing & more charges may be forthcoming.
State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for July 2016. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.7% in July 2016. Locally, Chenango County’s unemployment rate was at 4.5%, Delaware County at 5.2% & Otsego County at 4.5% for July.
