The State Division of Consumer Protection is providing tips to help older adults avoid financial scams and exploitation on National Senior Citizens Day, which happens to be today. The FBI’s Internet Crime Report estimates that the annual loss to victims aged 60 years and older in the United States is $3.4 billion dollars, the highest of any age group. The Chenango United Way will be merging with the Delaware & Otsego Counties United Way soon; Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco told WCDO News that the pandemic made the situation difficult for many not-for-profit organizations:

Monaco said that she will be the Executive Director of the new 3 county United Way, however money raised in each county, will be used in the county it was raised in, they will serve about 153,000 people across the 3 counties and will continue to maintain a physical presence in Norwich and Oneonta at their current locations.

Delaware County Public Health announced that the Farmer’s Market COVID-19 Clinic this week in Delhi has been cancelled. Governor Cuomo declared a State of Emergency on for more than half the counties in the state, including all of the local counties, as Hurricane Henri was aiming for Long Island Sunday. The Governor's declaration of a state of emergency ensures resources which are assigned for State use only are provided to local governments to help protect citizens and infrastructure. Governor Cuomo activated 500 National Guard troops for deployment to help localities with storm response efforts. A Flash Flood watch remains in effect through 8:00 PM tonight.

The Guilford Town Board will meet tonight to discuss a
controversial Wind Farm proposal by Calpine, to place large Wind Turbines in

who are opposed to the High Bridge Wind Farm plans:

Tonight's Guilford town board meeting is expected to be well
attended, and the meeting has been moved to the Guilford Town Garage at 7:00 PM
to accommodate the larger attendance.

The annual Big Wheels Golf Tournament, held at the Delhi
College Golf Course, will take place on Friday, May 10th this year.  The event serves as a primary fundraiser for
programs and services which provide assistance to Delaware County senior
citizens.  The entry fee this year will

CHENANGO UNITED WAY’s Annual Celebration is this morning at

61 year old Phillip Stein of Binghamton pleaded guilty in
Broome County Court today, for a Bank robbery at Citizens Bank in Binghamton on
March 7th.  Stein will spend 1 1/2 to 3
years in prison for 3rd degree attempted Bank Robbery, he will officially be sentenced
June 7th.

In honor of National Volunteer Week April 7th to the 13th,
the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties invites residents to nominate a
volunteer for the 2019 Extraordinary Volunteer of the Year. The winner will

Oneonta Police Department reported that they have received complaints from a number of citizens indicating that they have received scam phone calls from an unknown person claiming to be a representative of a police department in Florida. The scammer claims that they are performing a donation drive and asks for money. Oneonta Police reminds area residents to contact & donate to reputable charities that are well known to conduct releif efforts for those affected by natural disasters.

The United Way of Delaware & Otsego Counties will kick off their 2017 Campaign today. The Board of Directors of the United Way will be at the B-Side Ballroom in the Clinton Plaza in Oneonta from 4:00 to 6:30 PM; they will also be announcing the recipient of the 2017 Cheri Albrecht Excellence Award at 5:15 pm.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to curb the power of independent expenditure campaigns unleashed by the 2010 Supreme Court case Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission. The legislation strengthen disclosure requirements for political consultants and lobbyists who provide services to sitting elected officials or candidates for elected office by requiring them to register with the state and reveal their clients.

Governor Cuomo & State Leaders announced an agreement on a 5 Point Ethics Reform Plan to toughen election, lobbying, and ethics enforcement laws, including legislation to curb the power of independent expenditure campaigns from the 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United ruling, Area Assemblyman Cliff Crouch commented about the ethics reform package:

The Plan includes the nation's strongest independent expenditure reforms to end coordination in political campaigns, Pension Forfeiture for convicted lawmakers, First Time Disclosure Requirements for Political Consultants, Lobbying Disclosure Reforms & Issue Advocacy Reforms

Governor Cuomo & state lawmakers have a few issues left to deal with in the last days of the 2016 session. Cuomo specifically mentioned Combating the heroin epidemic; increasing access to breast cancer screening and treatment; Passing comprehensive ethics reform; Combating Citizens United; and Updating the Alcohol Beverage Control Law.

The Preceptor Beta Kappa chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will honor Carol Allen of Sidney Saturday, for her service to the Sidney United Way, the Sidney Chamber of Commerce, the Sidney Elementary School, the Sidney Senior Center, and The Delaware County Council for the Aging, & several other organizations. The Unadilla Chamber will have their Annual Dinner on Sunday, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church. the Annual Dinner social hour begins at 4:30 pm and dinner at 5:00 PM. The chamber will honor Wakeman Construction as The Business of the Year and Commitment to Community award will go to the Unadilla Food Pantry.

The United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties announced that the The CASH Coalition of Otsego and Delaware Counties can still prepare and file state and federal income taxes for free, for taxpayers who made under $62,000.00 in the 2015 tax year. The program is available for use on any home computer or public computers at CDO Workforce Offices, in Oneonta, Sidney or Delhi, at the SFCU branch in Delhi. Also, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is available for individuals and families who made under $54,000 in the 2015 tax year, They offer free tax preparation and filing by trained individuals under the supervision of volunteer site coordinators, apointments are required by calling Catholic Charities at 432-0061. The city of Oneonta announced today that the citizens campaign for the environment will be conducting a home to home canvass in the city from 4:00 to 9:00 PM Mondays through Fridays now through the month of June. More information is available at 432-6450.

Area Congressman Richard Hanna released a statement regarding Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from traveling the United States. Hanna said that the "Call to ban Muslims from entering the United States of America is un-American, ill-advised, dangerous and shows a profound lack of understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Hanna said that he supports taking extra precautions and reforming the Visa Waiver Program to prevent terrorists from exploiting our immigration laws, & he also supported a measure in the House last month to halt the admission of refugees from Syria and Iraq until the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence certify that they do not pose a threat to our national security.”

Guidice said that many of the seniors citizens wanted items like cleaning supplies or toys for their animals this Christmas season, They hope to do the Secret Santa for seniors again next year.

The United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties is hosting a “Ladies Night Out” on December 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Council Rock Brewery located on Rt. 28, Cooperstown. The United Way will be raffling off gift baskets and drawing for the winner of a Coach® purse at tonight’s event..

The Tri-County Senior Center in Sidney is sponsoring a drive to collect Socks for Seniors. The socks will be distributed to shut-in senior citizens locally Collection boxes are located at Trackside Dining, Lemon Tree Hair Salon and the Sidney Senior Dining Center at the Civic Center. The deadline to drop off socks is Wednesday, December 16th.

Governor Cuomo and area leaders announced a Citizens Preparedness corps-training program in Walton tonight at 6:00 PM. The event will be held at the Walton High School auditorium, for those who pre-registered.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman backed a federal proposal designed to ensure that the nation's lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands receive proper protection under the federal Clean Water Act. A coalition of 8 states submitted comments to the EPA & the Army Corps of Engineers on their joint Waters of the United States Proposed Rule, which seeks to clarify what types of waters are covered by the Clean water Act, following 2 recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that led to uncertainty among businesses, citizens, and municipalities as to their obligations.
