The New York Tax commission released its report to governor Cuomo earlier this week, with proposal to keep the state growing by lowering or freezing taxes. Governor Cuomo commented yesterday in Albany about the plan”:

The Commission also endorsed most of the plans forwarded to simplify the structure of state’s tax system by eliminating nuisance taxes. The governor will include the recommendations in his State of the State address January 8th and his state budget proposal, which will be released on January 21st.
State Senator Jim Seward announced that 47 job creation projects in the 51st senate district will receive state funds totaling more than $14.8 million through the third round of Regional Economic Development Council awards. Seward’s district encompasses the Mohawk & Southern Tier regions, which won 2 of the biggest awards again this year, Statewide a total of $715.9 million was awarded for 824 projects.
Marijuana in New York would be legalized under legislation submitted Wednesday by a state senator Liz Krueger of Manhattan. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act would tax and regulate marijuana in the same manner as alcohol, the bill would remove penalties for possession under two ounces of marijuana or less. It would make 18 the minimum legal age for marijuana possession and consumption, but prohibit the sale of marijuana to people under the age of 21. The bill said there would be an excise tax of $50 per ounce of marijuana, and localities would be able to authorize a sales tax on retail sales.
State Senator Tom Libous reported that only 70% of Delaware County homeowners have registered for their STAR exemption. Libous said that there are still about 1,100 homeowners in Delaware County who are missing out on this money-saving School Tax Relief exemption. Homeowners across New York State who receive the Basic STAR exemption must re-register with the New York State Tax Department, by December 31st. registrations are available at tax.ny.gov and clicking on Register for STAR, or by calling 518-457-2036. Seniors receiving Enhanced STAR are NOT affected. Libous stated that the STAR program saves the average property owner $700 a year.
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is pressing wireless carriers to install anti-theft measures in smart phones. Schneiderman sent letters to the nation’s biggest wireless carriers regarding the industry’s decision to prohibit Samsung from pre-loading a “kill switch” application. The device can be activated remotely after a smart phone is stolen and render the phone permanently inoperable. In New York, there was a 40 percent spike last year in cell phone thefts.
Delaware County Deputies arrested 23-Year-old Maxwell Ginty Jr of Delhi Monday. Deputies reported that an arrest warrant had been issued by the Town of Fenton Court on a charge of 4th degree Grand Larceny. Ginty was turned over to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office for further action.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is optimistic the Senate will vote in January on her bill to change the military’s approach to sexual assault cases. Gillibrand failed to get a Senate vote this year on her proposal, which would give military attorneys the authority to decide whether to prosecute sexual assault cases and other serious crimes in the armed forces. She had offered the proposal as an amendment to an annual fiscal 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, which is expected to win approval in the House this week and the Senate next week.

Sidney village police have arrested 27-year-old Jordan O’Neill of Sidney, following the report of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the hand Monday night.  O’Neill was charged with 2nd & 3rd degree criminal possession of a weapon & falsely reporting an incident.  O’Neill was arraigned in Sidney Village court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail pending future court action.  State police assisted Sidney police in the investigation.


The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce is recruiting for participants in their Christmas parade, to beheld on December 14th at 6:00 PM.  Bainbridge Chamber President John Payne explains:

Assemblyman Cliff Crouch announced that he would be hosting 3 town hall meetings, in Kirkwood, Windsor and Triangle.  The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 3rd at the Kirkwood Town Hall at 5:00 PM, at the Windsor Town Hall at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, December 4th and the Triangle Town Hall on Thursday, December 5th at 6:00 PM.


Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Brian Copeland of Norwich on a charge of 4th degree Criminal Mischief.  Copeland was arrested after deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the Town of Norwich; Copeland is accused of destroying property of the victim during an altercation.   Copeland was arraigned in the Town Norwich Court and was released and ordered to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.


New York lawmakers who pledged to go without salaries during the 16-day partial government shutdown in October never missed a paycheck. All members of Congress were paid on their usual salary schedules because of the timing of their pay periods. Most of New York’s 27 House members and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, made no pledge to forgo their pay during the shutdown.


New York has given state police 32 tall, unmarked SUVs to better peer down at drivers' hands, part of an aggressive attack on texting while driving that also includes steeper penalties and dozens of highway "Texting Zones," where motorists can pull over to use their devices. New York  has banned text messaging for all drivers and prohibits using hand-held cell phones. this year The state toughened penalties for motorists caught using hand-held devices, increasing penalty points on the driving record from 3 to 5, along with tickets that carry fines of up to $200.


U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is introducing legislation to toughen the penalties against telemarketing companies that violate the "do not call" rules. Schumer says spammers are taking advantage of new technology and legal loopholes,  he proposes that the penalties be increased to $20,000 dollars for each violation and jail time for repeat offenders. Since August, the FTC has logged as many as 200,000 robo-call complaints a month.


A government watchdog group is calling for limits on money individuals and corporations can give candidates in state elections.  The New York Public Interest Research Group blames the state's political scandals on lax limits, poor enforcement and loopholes. They claim that individual limits per candidate should be $2,600 per election with a $1,000 corporate limit to any campaign committee during an election cycle. NYPIRG submitted its proposals to the state’s newly formed Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption, which is scheduled to issue a preliminary report December 1st.

Governor Cuomo announced that $48 million in grants have been awarded for transportation improvements across the State, which will leverage an additional $80 million in federal, state and local funding. The grants are funding projects that will improve transportation infrastructure and support economic development.  Grants are being awarded locally for the Eaton Airport in Norwich for a New maintenance Vehicle, for the Sidney Municipal Airport for Fuel farm upgrades, for New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway Corporation to Relocate interchange between CSX & NYS&W to NYS&W property to improve safety & service on both lines. Other local projects include the Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society, for the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad Rehabilitation. more information is available at governor.ny.gov.


Chenango County Habitat for Humanity and the Cornish family will attend a house dedication tomorrow, at state route 206 in West Bainbridge.  This will be a dedication for the 5th house completed by Chenango county habitat for humanity, the dedication ceremony will be at 10:30 a.m. and an Open House will follow from 11 a.m. till 12-noon.  More information about Chenango County Habitat for Humanity is available at habitat.chenango.org


A $1.1 million federal grant will bring new pavement to Greater Binghamton Airport’s west apron. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Richard Hanna announced the $1.1 million dollar grant from the federal Department of Transportation. The 168,000-square-foot asphalt apron is separate from the runways and taxiways. There, aircraft load and unload, and are boarded, parked and refueled. The pavement currently shows signs of distress and requires rehabilitation.


Newly retired people in Harpursville, Port Crane, Afton and Sidney can attend a series of workshops at the Eastern Broome Senior Center. New York added 22,700 private-sector jobs in August, but the unemployment rate rose as more people try to re-enter the workforce.   New York’s unemployment rate rose from 7.5 percent in July to 7.6 percent in August. The national rate was 7.3 percent in August. The number of unemployed New Yorkers rose from 717,400 to 729,700 between July and August.


New York electric customers will get a small credit on an upcoming bill, as the state Public Service Commission approved of a 1-time credit to electricity bills of up to $3.00, depending on usage.  Regulators reported that the credit steams from a settlement that included a $110 million dollar civil penalty against constellation Energy commodities Group, on grounds that the power producer manipulated wholesale energy sales in 3 regional markets.  The credit will be passed on as soon as utilities received the funds.


September is Emergency Preparedness Month. Emergency responders remind resident to have a plan with family members as to where to meet following an emergency, they should also have a disaster kit with 3 days worth of food, a can opener, clothing, medications and hygiene items.  The Red Cross will hold an Emergency Preparedness Fair tomorrow at Binghamton University from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

State Police are investigating a strong-armed robbery, which occurred last Thursday afternoon on Main Street in Johnson City.  Police reported that an unidentified woman was getting into her vehicle when a male subject grabbed her purse and fled on foot. The woman chased the suspect and observed him getting into the passenger seat of a dark colored Pontiac and drive towards Endwell. The suspect is further described as being a black male in his early to mid 20’s, average build, wearing a dark shirt and pants and a black head covering. Anyone with information is asked to call State Police BCI at 754-3854.


Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the 2nd degree murder trial of Anthony Taglianetti of Virginia.  Taglianetti is charged with fatally shooting 51-year-old Keith Reed Jr. in Chautauqua County last September. U.S. Marshals arrested Taglianetti in Virginia 8 days after Reed’s murder. Reed previously served as a principal in Sherburne-Earlville Central School District prior to becoming superintendent of the Clymer Central School District.


Delaware County Deputies responded to Sherman Hill Rd in the Town of Franklin regarding a domestic incident complaint.  Deputies arrested 27-year-old Danielle Lister of Walton for Criminal Mischief, Harassment and Endangering the welfare of a child. Lister was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Franklin Court at a later time.


US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand introduced a bill that would require the USDA to maintain adequate staffing and increase testing at the facilities that produce beef, pork, and poultry products. The bill also would require the agency to improve standards to protect against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  More information is available at gillibrand.senate.gov.


Catholic Charities will hold a fundraiser on September 28th from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, at the Chenango County fair grounds, to benefit their “Roots & Wings” program.  Executive director Robin Beckwith explains:

State senator Jim Seward co-sponsored a proposal called "The Funding Emergency Relief Now” bill, to assist property owners when FEMA or other funding is denied, with a refundable state income tax credit against property taxes paid where properties have suffered value-reducing damage.  The bill calls for a state task force on flood prevention and mitigation, enhanced funding through the Environmental Protection Fund for soil and water conservation districts, National Guard directed and supported construction assistance in communities where flood mitigation measures have been identified, and requiring a simplified and expedited process for the state share of any reimbursable flood-related costs by local governments. The legislation is expected to be voted on next year.


Governor Cuomo signed legislation that will expand the ban on the type of chemicals used to make dangerous bath salts. The law comes after several high-profile deaths in New York City this summer involving the synthetic drugs.  The state Legislature in June passed a bill that adds new compounds used to make synthetic drugs to the state’s banned substance list.  The governor last year issued an executive order to ban the sale and possession of synthetic drugs under the state’s public health law.

Several local fire departments worked into the early morning hours today fighting a fire that gutted the Bluestone Grill in Hancock. The fire was called in at 10:30 p.m.last night. Crews from Hancock, Deposit, Walton and East Branch responded. There were no injuries, and there was minimal damage to surrounding homes. Deleware County fire investigators are looking into the cause.
Police arrested a Windsor a man for allegedly stealing nearly $20,000 worth of merchandise from a Conklin business. Broome County deputies arrested 44 year old Greg Rought, who is charged with stealing tools and gift cards from E. Systems Group in Conklin on Aug. 14. Rought was arraigned in Town of Dickinson Court and sent to the Broome County jail. Anyone with any information should call the Sheriff's Office at 778-2053
In an effort to promote economic growth, community leaders in Delaware County are proposing a new project at SUNY Delhi to create more business opportunities by recycling waste water. The project would take waste water from the Delhi Waste Water Treatment facility and recycle it through an irrigation system on campus golf course. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand joined campus and community leaders earlier this week in support of the project. Leaders hope Gillibrand will go to bat for them, as about half of the funding for the $2 million plan is still needed and the project is eligible for federal grants. Construction is anticipated to begin next spring.
State Police arrested 66 year old Stephen Hay of Sidney Center for DWI with a BAC of .09% following an investigation into a property damage accident on Sherman Hill Road in Franklin. Hay was issued tickets for Town of Franklin Court September 12.
About 1,200 homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the June floods received checks yesterday to help them repair and rebuild. Gov Cuomo appeared at Herkimer County Community College to give an update on the flood recovery and state funds to assist with that effort. The checks represent $13.6 million in state funds awarded to those affected by the flooding in the Mohawk Valley, Central New York and Niagara County. Additional checks will be issued as more applications are processed.
US Senator Charles Schumer is trying to make a connection that would bring up to 600 jobs to Delaware County. The jobs would be created at a call center to be built in Hancock. Schumer says he's pushing for funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For more information, go to scumer.senate.gov.
A new report on New York’s economy calls the last 10 years a “lost decade” for typical workers, with median wages dropping almost 7 percent for men and about 1 percent for women. The Fiscal Policy Institute said the recovery from the Great Recession shows more underemployment despite the state restoring overall jobs lost in the downturn. The institute said most growth has come in lower-paying businesses like retail and restaurants, while a decline in middle-wage jobs continues, partly from government cuts. The report was based mainly on federal and state labor data.
Celebrating the end of the summer? Make sure you’re not drinking and driving, or you may end up with a Labor Day ticket. State and local law enforcement agencies have been out in force since Aug. 16 with sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols to deter drunk driving. Law enforcement agencies will also crack down on drivers whose ability is impaired by drugs, both illegal and prescription. Nationally, someone is killed every 51 minutes on average in a drunk-driving crash. The majority of these crashes involve drunk drivers who have nearly twice the legal BAC of .08 or higher.
Governor Cuomo announced 16 winners, across the state, of a statewide competition to form public-private partneships to prepare high school students for high skill jobs in technology, manufacturing and healthcare. Students can earn an associate degree at no cost. Partnerships include Broome Community College, Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton and United Health Services. Hartwick College hosted U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for a press conference earlier this afternoon. Gillibrand discussed her proposal to increase access to rural broadband by creating a new grant component to the current Broadband Loan Program, for private sector providers and state and local government,s to acquire funding and resources to deliver high-speed Internet to businesses and families to 1.1 million rural New Yorkers who do not have broadband internet access.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Kyle Angle of Sherburne Following an investigation of a Domestic Dispute. Angle was charged with for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Blood Circulation, Three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Possession of a weapon. Angle was found to be choking a female victim while three young children were nearby. Angle was also found to be in Possession of a hand gun without holding a pistol permit. Angle was arraigned in Town of Sherburne Court and will re-appear at later court date.
Oneonta police arrested 23 year old Gable Bugel of Oneonta on a charge of third-degree arson. Bugel is accused of setting fire to a car that was parked in a lot off Roundhouse Road on May 13. The vehicle was destroyed. Last year, Bugel was charged with attempted arson in connection with an incident behind Community Bank on Main Street. In a separate case, 28 year old Therese Sandborn of Oneonta was charged with second-degree attempted arson for allegedly attempting to set her apartment on Luther Street on fire. Sandborn was arraigned in city court and set to Otsego County jail.
State and local government pension rates will drop slightly beginning in April, according to state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Public employers at the state and local level will pay an average of 20.1 percent of their payroll into the pension fund during the 2014-15 fiscal year, a drop of 0.8 points from the current year. The drop in rates came as a surprise, as local governments had been bracing for another increase as contribution rates continued to recover from the economic recession. But DiNapoli's office is changing the way it separates and values its equities and non-equities based on a recommendation from an actuary, allowing for the slight decrease.
Congressman Richard Hanna announced that Tri-Cities Airport in Binghamton was selected to receive $137,000 in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation to make upgrades. The grant will refurbish the runway to maintain structural integrity of the pavement and to minimize foreign object debris. This grant will provide funding for the design phase of the project. Hanna is a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.
Thirty schools will be eligible for up to $500,000 in state grants through a new community-schools program launched by Gov. Cuomo. The governor outlined the plan in his State of the State address in January as a way to help struggling communities with additional services. Schools have until Sept. 18 to apply for the money. The $500,000 would be paid out over three years. The state Education Department has the application and program details. Go to NYSED.GOV.
Otsego County has a new emergency notification system in place. The county partnered with Hyper Reach to deliver mass notifications to residents and visitors to the county. It sends thousands of calls or messages simultaneously. It's automatically linked to all landline telephones.If you want to get messages delivered to your cell phone, you have to go to the county's web site at OtsegoCounty.com and sign up.
A total of 11,121 housing sales closed in New York in July, a 16.4 percent jump from the same month the previous year. From January through July, 56,522 sales have been reported across the state, a 9.2 percent increase from the same period in 2012, according t the New York State Association of Realtors. The report noted the highest number of July closed sales since 2007 and the highest number of July pending sales since 2005.
A repaving project on State Highway 12 from Oxford to Norwich will begin tomorrow. Contractors will pave nine miles of State Highway 12 from Millbrook Road (south of Oxford) to Norwich. The work will be done from 6 am to 6 pm through September 13th. There will be alternating lane closures so expect delays. Travelers are encouraged to use County Road 32 as an alternate route.

Governor Cuomo announced that FEMA has informed New York State that residents in communities affected by the recent flooding will NOT be eligible for the Individual Assistance program to help homeowners rebuild and recover. Cuomo said that if federal assistance is not provided, the State of New York will step in to provide whatever is needed, as an effective government is one that serves the people and when disaster strikes is there to help.

New York State will be participating in a pilot program created by the USDA to test if it is cost effective to incorporate Greek yogurt into school lunch programs.  U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand & Congressman Richard Hanna worked with the USDA, Chobani & other yogurt manufacturers to create the pilot program, 3 other states will be participating in the program: Tennessee, Idaho, and Arizona.  The pilot program is only for the 2013-2014 school year. New York leads the country in Greek yogurt production.


Delaware County Sheriffs Deputies arrested 55-year-old John All of Kortright following a domestic incident in the Town of Kortright on July 4th   All is charged with 2nd degree Harassment, Resisting Arrest and Obstruction of Governmental Administration.  He was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court on the charges and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash bail.


THE NEW YORK FARM BUREAU PRESIDENT Dean Norton said that the bureau cannot support the Farm Bill that passed in the House last week, due to the splitting of the agriculture and nutrition portions into separate bills that break apart the urban-rural collaboration. Norton said that they could not support a process that has unknown long-term ramifications, they call for a new Farm Bill that serves the needs of farmers, as well as the underfed who would be denied access to farm products.


Unadilla town highway officials announced that Lockwood Hill Road is closed again today.  The road is closed due to a repaving project.

State University of New York Chancellor Nancy Zimpher today announced the launch of Phase II of SUNY Works, the system’s cooperative education and internship initiative. Eighteen campuses across the state are now expanding their icooperative education opportunities. Campuses launching SUNY Works as part of Phase II include UAlbany, SUNY Buffalo State, SUNY Oneonta and  Broome community college. Campus faculty will work with local employers to develop college courses that integrate classroom instruction and on-the-job work experience. For more information go to sunyworks@suny.edu.

Eliot Spitzer has met the deadline to file thousands of petition signatures for his bid to revive his political career by running for New York City comptroller. Spitzer said over 27,000 signatures were submitted to the city Board of Elections just after 10:30 p.m. last night, ahead of a midnight deadline. It came just four days after the tarnished ex-governor launched his campaign.

Statewide tourist spending rose 6.2 percent to $57.3 billion in 2012. Every region in the state saw growth in 2012 from the previous year, with the most dramatic increases in New York City and Long Island. The Central New York region, which includes much the Southern Tier, saw a 5 percent increase in 2012, when it brought in $1.9 billion according to Empire State development.

US senator Kirsten Gillibrand made an appeal to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in support of a major disaster declaration for parts of the Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier and North Country affected by storms and floods earlier this month. Gillibrand is requesting approval of the state’s request for the President to declare a major disaster, including FEMA assistance, for Chenango, Delaware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, and Otsego counties

Otsego county deputies arrested a Sidney man for selling heroin in Oneonta in July of 2012. 35 year old Ian Lee Borowski was charged with third degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was arraigned and sent to the Otsego county jail on $20,000 bail. He faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted due to a previous felony conviction

The Oneonta common council will hold their next regular meeting tonight at city hall.  The regular meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in the common council chambers, prior to that at 6:00 PM, the council will see the “Parks Master Plan” presentation.


The city of Norwich will be receiving a 4 million dollar loan and $1 million grant from the USDA’s Rural Development Program to for building a new water treatment plant.  Norwich’s treatment plant has been in operation for more than a century, the funding came through a joint effort from US Senators Schumer & Gillibrand and Congressman Richard Hanna.


The New York Farm Bureau announced that the state Assembly unanimously passed the 2% Agricultural Assessment Cap previously passed by the State Senate. The bill will help rein in rising property taxes on farm properties; it goes to Governor Cuomo’s desk for approval.


A Binghamton man has been detained after a flight from Hong Kong to Newark airport following various outbursts.  The man identified himself to authorities as Daniel Morgan Perry of Binghamton, Perry warned passengers regarding government agencies and Edward Snowdon, the leaker of information from the NSA, who is believed to be hiding in Hong Kong currently.  Members of the flight crew detained Perry, he was taken to an unidentified hospital for observation, no injuries were reported, and Perry will be facing charges shortly.


State Police arrested 39-year-old Evelyn Augusto of Sandy Hook, Connecticut for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, as well as other Vehicle and Traffic Law violations after a traffic stop on State Route 30 in the Town of Middletown in Delaware County.  Augusto was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and released on her own recognizance to reappear at a later date.


State comptroller Tom DiNapoli released “The Fiscal Stress Monitoring System” results today, from data collected & analyzed through the end of last month.   The data was collected from annual financial reports submitted by local governments to DiNapoli’s Office.  Locally, Broome County ranked highest on the “Susceptible for Fiscal Stress” chart from 54 municipalities that have their fiscal year end on December 31st.


Delaware County Fair officials today announced that there would be a 5K run at the fair this year.  Officials said that the run will start and end on the fairgrounds, there will be a variety of prizes & giveaways.  The cost of he event is $20 if registered by August 1st and $25 after that. State Troopers arrested 22-year-old Frederick Schum of Binghamton for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest was the result of a complaint on Loughlin Road in Kirkwood; Schum was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Kirkwood Town Court on July 2nd.


The 18th annual Gus Macker 3 on 3-basketball tournament will be held in downtown Norwich the weekend of July 13th.  Macker organizer Tom Revoir said that they are in need of volunteers known as “Gus Busters”:

The president of the NAC Entertainment & The Broadway Theater league Albert Nocciolino, was on national Television, winning a Tony Award for his role as one of the producers of Cindy Lauper’s “Kinky Boots” which was chosen as the best Musical.   Nocciolino told WCDO News how he became involved:

Nocciolino said that the show will eventually hit the road and will come to the upstate theaters in about a year.


State police charged Davenport town supervisor, Dennis Valente with felony operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or more.  Valente was arraigned in Davenport Town Court and was released, pending future court action on June 25th.


State police arrested 25 year old Jordan Finch of Bainbridge for 1st degree reckless endangerment, 1st degree unlawful imprisonment, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal use of a firearm, menacing, criminal obstruction of breathing & 2nd degree harassment.  Finch faces court action on the charges shortly.


State Troopers in Oneonta arrested 18-year-old Justin Woznicki of Oneonta for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest was the result of a complaint originating at the Celtic Inn in Oneonta; Woznicki was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Oneonta Court on June 18th.


State police arrested 44-year-old Imre Szabo of Afton for possessing a sexual performance by a child.  Szabo is accused of possessing child sexual materials; he was issued a ticket to appear in court at a later date.


Binghamton City police are searching for 37-year-old Levelle Marton of Binghamton on an arrest warrant for 2nd degree strangulation.   Martin is described as black, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 220 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. Anyone with information can contact the Binghamton Police Warrant Division at 772-7044.


The American Red Cross announced that on June 17th at 5:30pm at Remliks in downtown Binghamton, the “Heroes for the American Red Cross” campaign will kick off. The campaign has businesses, school clubs, church groups, civic organizations and individuals pledge to raise at least $1,000 for the American Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter, for disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid, CPR and other lifesaving classes.  More information is available at 785-7207.


US Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer announced that the village of Morris has received a Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant for $2,475,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Loan and Grant Program.  The funding will be for the construction of a new water storage tank, replace old water mains and install water meters.  The old water tank was well over 100 hundred years old.


The nonprofit Disabled American Veterans Mobile Service Office will be visiting various communities around the state in the coming weeks, to provide the counseling and claim filing assistance.  The Mobile Service Office is free to all veterans and members of their families, it will be in Oneonta on Thursday, June 27th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at DAV Oneonta Chapter #200, 279 Chestnut Street.


The Oneonta water department will be flushing hydrants in the river street area this afternoon and again later tonight.  Residents may notice discolored water or low pressure; those with questions can call 432-2100.
