Oneonta Firefighters responded this morning to a reported structure fire at 525 Main Street at the Oneonta veterinary Hospital. 3 on-duty firefighters arrived within minutes to find fire rapidly extending up the exterior wall of the building. Crews knocked down the fire, checked for extension, and searched the building to ensure the fire had not spread into the structure, off duty Firefighters were called back to assist.

Governor Hochul announced $110 million in State funding to improve emergency communications systems and dispatching capabilities through 2 programs. Through the SICG-Formula Grant Program, $90 million is being awarded to support efforts to bolster communications networks, locally, Chennago County gets $968,000, Delaware County 1.16 Million Dollars & Otsego County gets 1.2 Million dollars. Also, The PSAP Operations Grant Program provides funding to support county 911 centers, with Chenango getting $310,000, Delaware & Otsego Counties get almost $320,000 each.

47 year old Neil Wesley was sentenced to 25 years in prison for receipt and possession of child pornography in US District Court. As part of his guilty plea, Wesley admitted he had been previously convicted of rape in New York in 2001, he also admitted that from at least December 2024 through February 2025 he received and distributed child pornography & he possessed over 200 images and 18 videos of child pornography. In addition to the 25-year imprisonment term, United States District Judge Anthony J. Brindisi imposed 15 years of supervised release, forfeiture and directed restitution to victims of the offense.

Otsego County Health Department announced that a Raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was found in Westford, all of the animals that were exposed to the Raccoon are being treated, Officials urge residents to get all pets & farm animals vaccinated, those that are not vaccinated & are exposed will be euthanized. 24 year old Thomas Murray of Binghamton was arraigned in a federal court room on an indictment charging him with Distribution of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography. Murray was arrested following an investigation by the FBI & State Police, he was returned to state custody where he is being held on similar state charges. Murray allegedly distributed child pornography on a web-based messaging facility on 2 separate occasions & he possessed child pornography on 2 devices, which was uncovered following a search warrant conducted on Murray’s residence in 2025. Murray faces a mandatory minimum term of 5 years in federal prison on the distribution charges, a maximum term of 20 years in federal prison for the distribution and possession offenses, a fine of up to $250,000, and a mandatory term of supervised release of between 5 years and life. Murray would also be required to register as a sex offender if convicted.

State Police arrested 25 year old Hunter Lawrence of Auburn, New York, following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The investigation determined that Lawrence engaged in multiple sexual encounters with a victim under the age of 17 over an extended period of time. Lawrence is employed as a Deputy with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. There are no allegations that the conduct occurred while he was on duty. Lawrence was charged with 4 counts of Rape, plus Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Lawrence was processed and transported to the Cortland County Jail for arraignment, The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday, through Sunday night. Drivers can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, Troopers will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while driving, they should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles when traveling. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period, Troopers issued 10,497 total tickets, arrested 210 people for DWI, 258 tickets for distracted driving, 301 tickets for Move Over law violations.

The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

The State Police Troop C Violent Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team & Community Stabilization Unit conducted a traffic stop Saturday on a vehicle on State Route 206 in the town of Downsville after observing Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 60 year old Robert Sanfelice of the Town of Union, for allegedly harassing a neighborhood family because of their race and ethnic origin since 2020. Sanfelice was charged with several Counts of Harassment, Sanfelice was taken to Central Arraignment where he was released on his own recognizance, to appear in the Town of Union Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 41 year old Donatello Lazarati of Baldwinsville for Bail Jumping and Criminal Contempt, following a violation of a court order issued following his arraignment on a previous Grand Larceny charge. Lazarati was prohibited from leaving the United States and was directed to surrender his passport. Lazarati failed to comply with those conditions, State Police were notified Thursday that Lazarati was attempting to leave the United States and purchased an airline ticket to Qatar at John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was arrested at the airport, brought back to Troop C, and was processed in and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $35,000 cash, $50,000 credit or $250,000 partially secured bond.

The Luszi’s Legacy Cornhole Tournament last weekend successful, the tournament raised $1,600 that will go directly to Pet Street Station Animal Hospital fund, to assist families deal with the bills for emergency or quality of life care for their senior pets.

The State DOT announced the start of the $7 million Southside Oneonta Safety and Mobility Improvement Project, which will reduce traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian access along the State Route 23 and State Route 28 corridor. The project includes extended turning lanes, a new sidewalk and an additional pedestrian crosswalk, ADA-compliant curb ramps, plus 2 new bus stops for Oneonta Public Transit users, construction will be continuing through the fall of 2027.

State Police arrested 49 year old James Crosby of Binghamton following an investigation into an alleged threatening social media comment directed at New York State Senator Lea Webb. Crosby was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat as a Hate Crime, The investigation determined that Crosby posted a threatening comment on Facebook in response to a WBNG news story featuring Senator Webb at a Juneteenth event. Crosby was transported to the Broome County Jail for centralized arraignment. State Police also determined that Crosby was in possession of firearms despite being prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction, Police Investigators recovered a rifle, a large capacity ammunition feeding device, and a firearm suppressor, all of which are prohibited under New York State law. Crosby was additionally charged with four counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, class “D” felonies.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies attempted to stop a motor vehicle on State Highway 10 in the Stamford/Hobart area, 29-year-old Wesley Eignor of Stamford failed to stop and continued on, eventually stopping in a parking lot, Eignor was taken into custody, he attempted to fight the Deputies, he was charged with Attempted Assault, 2 counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration, plus Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle as well as for multiple vehicle and traffic offenses, Eignor was processed at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where he was arraigned and held on bail.

State DEC announced several changes to deer hunting regulations to increase harvest of female deer and improve DEC’s ability to manage abundant deer populations. Masonville Fire Departments responded to a barn fire Thursday at about 3:00 PM on State Route 8. 8 other Fire companies from surrounding communities also responded, Route 8 was closed off to traffic for several hours as crews worked to set up water supplies and utilized tankers from other departments. The Town Of Oneonta announced that the town pool should be opening for the season later this month, following inspections by the County Health Department. Renovations to the 50 year old pool have been ongoing since last year, the pool is free the town will offer free swim lessons to town residents.

Deputies responded to an address in the Town of German for a domestic dispute, it was found that Gonzalez subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact. Emergency water quality monitoring has indicated that the water system again meets State Drinking Water Standards. Some residents may experience discolored water or a change in taste or odor of the water; if this occurs flush all water lines for 15-20 minutes or until the water runs clear. A 2nd Fundraiser has been scheduled for Luszi's Legacy Saving Senior Paws. After 11 days, operations at Broome County Correctional Facility have largely returned to normal, Over 120 IV hydration treatments were conducted, 10 individuals were hospitalized, 8 have returned from the hospital, with 2 still receiving treatment. Broome County Health Department showed a positive result for Salmonella in sample of a chicken salad meal served on May 24th, no other meals have tested positive. The Health Department identified multiple violations related to food preparation and storage that could have led to the outbreak. Several of the violations identified are repeat violations that have previously been cited to the food vendor, particularly those involving the cooling of food, The Health Department found no issues with water quality at the Correctional Facility.

On May 9, Troopers were dispatched to 148 2nd Street in Deposit for a report of a stolen vehicle, after a customer reported to the business owner that Cecere was outside of the business entrance, she was no longer employed at that location. Another Sidney Community Clean-Up will be held at Keith Clark Park on Saturday, June 13. Starting time is set for 9:00 at the park pavilion. Volunteers will help variety of jobs throughout the walking trail areas. Some tools will be available, or volunteers may bring their favorite shovels, pruners or other gardening gear. State Police arrested 36 year old Salvatore Magro of Sherburne following an investigation into reports that underage victims were subjected to unwanted sexual contact while working with him. The investigation determined that over the last two years Magro engaged in a pattern of inappropriate sexual contact toward multiple teenage victims, while the victims were employed at Joe and Vinny’s Pizzeria on North Main Street in the village of Sherburne. Magro was taken into custody & was charged with Three counts of Forcible Touching, Four counts of Sexual Misconduct & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Magro was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The victims were issued Orders of Protection, Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward, they can call State Police at (607)561-7400.

CHENANGO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE arrested 30 year old Jordan Robinson of Smyrna for Harassment, Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Deputies responded to a residence in Smyrna for a domestic dispute, where Robinson allegedly subjected the victim to unwanted physical contact, damaged property, and attempted to prevent the victim from calling 911 in the presence of a juvenile. Robinson was Arraigned & was released on an appearance ticket, and an order of protection was issued for the victim. Robinson is to appear in the Town of Smyrna Court at a later date.
