Firefighters from Binghamton & surrounding communities responded to a fire at 1 Main Street in Binghamton late last night, 3 firefighters were reportedly injured, and were sent to Wilson Hospital, 1 firefighter, John Gaudet succumbed to his injuries, he had served with the Binghamton Fire Department for 11 years. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to a Davenport residence last month on a tip that children were living in unsafe conditions. 42-year old Robert Olsen and 43-year old Erin Olsen of Davenport subjected 2 juveniles to hazardous and unsafe living conditions that were injurious to the mental and physical welfare of the juveniles. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division arrested the Olsen's for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, they were later released on the summons directing them to reappear at the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
54 year old Dale Kowatch of Margaretville was sentenced to 9 months of incarceration for Driving While Intoxicated. On July 5th, 2024, State Police observed a vehicle weaving in and out of the double yellow lines on State Highway 28, a traffic stop was conducted & Kowatch admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages, he failed field sobriety tests, Kowatch had a prior conviction for DWI, making new charge a felony, punishable by jail time.

35 year old Lawrence Painter of Sidney, pleaded guilty to Criminal Contempt in Delaware County Court. On November 27, 2024, a woman lodged a complaint at the Sidney Village Police Station and reported that Painter went to her apartment and hit her in the face, he also violated an order of protection. Painter was located & arrested, he pleaded guilty this week & Painter will serve one year in the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Sentencing is currently set for April 22, 2025.
20-year-old Benjamin Wheeler of Norwich was sentenced to 8 months in a federal jail for possessing an unregistered AR-15 rifle. Wheeler was sentenced after pleading guilty, In addition to his prison term, Wheeler has been sentenced to 3 years of supervised release following his time in prison.
32 year old Michael Vogel of Delhi pleaded guilty to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court. In May of last year, Vogel sold fentanyl, in October, the Delaware County Grand Jury returned an indictment alleging Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance. Vogel will be sentenced to 2 years in state prison to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision, sentencing will be on for April 29, 2025.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 37 year old Tyrell Adams of Pittsfield on a number of charged following an investigation. Adams was charged with 3 counts of Sexual Abuse, Forcible Touching, 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Animal Cruelty & Criminal Contempt. Investigation revealed that over the course of several years, Adams allegedly subjected minors to persistent sexual abuse, Additionally he is accused of killing a family pet near children. Otsego County Family Court issued an order of protection against Adams prohibiting contact with multiple protected parties, he then sent Facebook messages to one of the protected parties. Adams was sent to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment.
Chenango County Health Department reported that a skunk found along State Highway 8 in South New Berlin tested positive for rabies at the State Lab in Albany. The Health Department reminds area residents to make sure that all pets are up to date on the vaccines, more information is available by contacting the Chenango County Health Department at (607) 337-1673

Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 29 year old Eugene Buzie of Unadilla for multiple sex offense charges following an investigation. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announces the addition of charges in to the investigation involving Buzie, On July 19th he was arrested by investigators for multiple sex offense related charges. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the defendant did request, receive and possess a sexual performance by a child through online sources & was charged additionally with Possession of Sexual Performance by a child, Buzie was still incarcerated on the previous charges, he was produced from the Oneida County Correctional Facility to be processed on the new charge, at the Otsego County Correctional Facility and he was returned to the Oneida County Correctional Facility with an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Unadilla Court at a later date.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for 40 year old Donald Shurock Jr. A Chenango County Deputy was called to a State Highway 26 in Pitcher Thursday for a suspicious vehicle complaint, the Deputy identified one of the occupants as Shurock, who has active warrants for his arrest. Shurock resisted arrest and fled the scene on foot, causing the Deputy to sustain physical injury. The Deputy was transported to a local hospital and was treated & released. Shurock is described as a white male, approximately 5’8” tall, weighing approximately 165 pounds, balding with short brown hair, brown beard and mustache, wearing a black winter hat, blue/gray Carhartt jacket, jeans, and boots. In addition to the active arrest warrants, Shurock is now wanted on charges of Assault on a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest. The Delaware County Chamber Of Commerce announced that they will be part of the annual Toys for Tots Campaign again this year. Businesses interested in having a collection box should call the chamber office at 607-746-2281, they will bring a collection box for the public to drop off new, unwrapped toys and advertise that your business is a collection point! Chamber staff will pick up the toys from your business and deliver them to Delaware Opportunities, for distribution of the gifts to Delaware County families in December

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 27 year old Joshua Hunt of Unadilla on an Arrest Warrant from the Town of Middlefield Court for failure to update the sex offender registry. Hunt was charged with Sex Offender Failure to Register updates beyond the 10 day limit, & Sex Offender Failure to update photo, Hunt was held for arraignment.
Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 59 year old John Williams of Edmeston after he attempted to flee a traffic stop. Williams was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful fleeing a Police Officer, DWI, & various traffic violations. Williams failed to stop for deputies, he fled & eventually lost control of his motorcycle in a cornfield, he was not injured but was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, & he is accused of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a drug. Williams will appear in the Town of Edmeston Court at a later date.
State Attorney General Letitia James & 13 other state attorneys general have teamed up to sue TikTok claiming that the social media platform damages mental health for children, because they follow dangerous trends, it can cause sleep deprivation, depression, and anxiety. The lawsuit also claims that TikTok violates privacy laws by collecting data from kids under 13 without consent.
The American Red Cross continues to work to restock critically needed blood products uncollected due to the ongoing impact of Hurricane Helene & Milton in the Southeast. Donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give now and help keep the blood supply stable in the weeks to come. State Police will step up efforts to combat speeding and impaired driving during Columbus Day Weekend. The Speed and Impaired Driving Enforcement Initiative aims to reduce the number of incidents caused by dangerous driving behaviors like Speeding, driving impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, which accounts from about 1/3 of all fatal crashes. State Police remind motorists to Obey the speed limit, designate a sober driver, or plan for a ride share to get home safely, always wear seat-belts and do not drive distracted.

Oneonta City Officials announced that starting today, Norfolk Southern Railroad crews will be rehabilitating the railroad interface at the Delaware Avenue railroad crossing. Norfolk Southern will be implementing a road detour for Delaware Avenue while work is taking place. State and local law enforcement issued more than 37,000 tickets over the 4th of July enforcement campaign this year, State and local law enforcement charged 1,227 people for driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs. State Police arrested 251 people for DWI, 4,248 for speeding, 1,315 for not wearing a seat belt, 360 for distracted driving, and 219 for failing to abide by the Move Over Law.

U.S. District Judge La Shann DeArcy Hall dismissed an unidentified State Trooper’s claim of retaliation against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, ruling that the retaliatory action Cuomo took against her occurred after her employment contract had already ended. Judge Hall said that whether the threat happened or not, the plaintiff identified as “Trooper 1” had failed to establish discrimination and retaliation claims against Cuomo & both of his former aides, while they were still in office.

Two Delaware County campgrounds sustained damages when straight-line winds, also known as a micro-burst, rolled through Cooks Falls on Sunday June 30th around 10:30 AM. Delaware County Spokesperson Shelly Johnson Bennett told WCDO news about the damages:

Johnson Bennett said that the deceased woman has been identified as Carol Luistro of Edison New Jersey, there were a few other people who suffered minor injuries, she also said that the National Weather Service Damage Assessment Team investigated the affected areas Sunday evening, they reported that it was part of a band of thunderstorms that impacted eastern Delaware and western Sullivan Counties on Sunday morning.
42 year old Thomas Mould of Stamford was indicted for Criminal Sexual Act, Forcible Touching and Endangering the Welfare of a Child by the Delaware County Grand Jury on June 27th. Mould is accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a victim less than 17 years old in Stamford on June 22nd, Forcible Touched the intimate parts of another person, and he did knowingly act in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical mental or moral welfare of a child. Mould faces the potential of being sentenced to life in prison if he is convicted and sentenced as a persistent felony offender.

State Police arrested 67 year old Eric Halstead of Candor, for Corrupting the Government & 3rd degree Grand Larceny, following an investigation by State Police with the Office of the State Comptroller. An investigation revealed that over several years while Halstead was Mayor of the Village of Candor, he withdrew over $23,000 dollars in cash from a Village account for personal use, Halstead replaced approximately $19-thousand dollars but still owes money to the Village of Candor. Halstead was arrested and Arraigned & he was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to appear in the Candor Town Court on August 5th.

State Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute on County Highway 47 in the town of Oneonta. 37 year old Timothy White of Oneonta was in possession of long guns and a victim was fearful of White’s past actions that could lead to further harm. While issuing an Extreme Risk Protection Order, Troopers observed numerous firearms and narcotics related items which further resulted in a search warrant of White’s residence, where Police seized methamphetamines, heroin, pills, scales, packaging materials & 2 rifles with defaced serial numbers White was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was arraigned & was remanded on $50,000 cash or $100,000 property bond.
State Police were dispatched to Thursday to Jericho Road in the town of Bainbridge to a suspicious male and vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence where he didn't belong. While attempting to interview the uncooperative driver, Troopers smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage. 28 year old Jacob Roach of Frankfort was arrested, Troopers discovered that the vehicle was stolen from a lot in Binghamton, Roach was charged with DWI, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Obstructing Governmental Administration, Obstructing Emergency Medical Services, Roach was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.
An Investigation by the State Attorney General's Office will begin shortly, following the shooting by Utica Police of a 13 year old Friday night. Utica's Crime Prevention Unit conducted a stop of two juveniles related to an ongoing investigation, one of them fled on foot and displayed what appeared to officers to be a handgun, an un-named officers discharged his weapon and shot the teen, who succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital.

59 year old Dolores Barse of Sidney was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury for Welfare Fraud & Offering a false Instrument for Filing, for allegedly obtaining $14,203.00 dollars that she was not entitled to, and for providing a false information about her income with the Delaware County Department of Social Services in an effort to obtain public assistance benefits she was not entitled to. Barse was arraigned Thursday and was released & she was ordered to appear for a court conference on July 8th.

State Police responded Sunday to 3410 Luther Street, Apartment 1 in the town of Union for a structure fire, Troopers attempted to put the house fire out utilizing fire extinguishers from their patrol vehicle, Troopers and Endwell fire members located 70-year-old Marino Panaro deceased in the entryway of the residence. Broome County Fire Investigators determined the origin of the fire to be in the area where Panaro was located, and the fire appears to be ruled accidental. An autopsy is scheduled to determine an official cause of death.

Our 4th Annual Heavy Metal Haul Out Fundraiser for the Delaware Valley Humane Society, with Waste Recovery Enterprises was successful for the month of May, raising a substantial amount for the shelter, Director Erin Insinga explains:

In the midst of tick season, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced her push for federal funding to research tick-borne illnesses:

Ticks are widespread throughout Upstate New York and has been a significant problem at Fort Drumm near Watertown, Gillibrand said that the issue has not been well-studied, and money would go to the CDC & The NIH among others to ramp up research on Lyme Disease.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Teriann Connolly of Binghamton on a drug charge. On September 5th, 2023, Deputies were dispatched to assist the Delaware County Probation Department, after a search, Connolly was found to be in possession of Fentanyl. At the conclusion of their investigation, Connolly was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, she was processed and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

45 year old Hayes Cutting of Bainbridge was sentenced to 1 1/2 to 3 years in state prison for Aggravated Family Offense in the Village of Sidney. On January 28, Officers responded to an ongoing domestic dispute, where Cutting allegedly grabbed the victim by the neck, shoved her to the ground, and began striking her, Cutting left the scene before Sidney Police responded. Cutting pleaded guilty to the charge in April & was sentenced Tuesday.
22 year old Devon Kupris of Kortright was convicted of Driving While Intoxicated in the Town of Kortright Local Criminal Court Tuesday, he pleaded guilty from an incident in January when a Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to help a vehicle on the roadside, Kupris was exhibiting signs of impairment, he pleaded guilty to DWI & Was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge and ordered that he install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he owns or operates, his license was revoked for 6 months and he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel and an Impaired Drivers’ Program, If he fails to comply, he could be re-sentenced to 1 year in jail.
The Village of Bainbridge announced that they will have crews milling on Walnut Street from Pearl Street East to the ball fields, starting this morning. The milling is expected to take up to 7 hours, Traffic on Walnut street will be restricted.

Ticks are widespread throughout Upstate New York and has been a significant problem at Fort Drumm near Watertown, Gillibrand said that the issue has not been well-studied, and money would go to the CDC & The NIH among others to ramp up research on Lyme Disease.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Teriann Connolly of Binghamton on a drug charge. On September 5th, 2023, Deputies were dispatched to assist the Delaware County Probation Department, after a search, Connolly was found to be in possession of Fentanyl. At the conclusion of their investigation, Connolly was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, she was processed and released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

State Police were dispatched last Wednesday to an accident involving a UTV in the town of Smithville. An investigation revealed that a UTV was on Waldon Road in the town of Smithville when the operator; 52 year old William Williams of Greene lost control, left the roadway, struck a tree and the UTV came to rest on its side. Williams did not survive, the unidentified 24-year-old passenger was transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 year old Nicholas Harrington on 4 active warrants and an additional open case. On May 29, Harrington was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Detectives Division, there were warrants for Forgery, for being the operator of a vehicle in an accident, for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property & Grand Larceny, and for a stolen vehicle, he was taken into custody in the Town of Pitcher, he was arraigned & was released on his own recognizance pending future court action.
The Chenango County Health Department announced that raccoon located on County Route 10 in the Hamlet of Preston was tested on May 30, 2024, by the NYS Wadsworth Laboratory and was found to have rabies. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 62 year old Michael Kirby of Delhi, after a warrant was issued for his arrest by the Town of Walton Court, and the Town of Deposit Court. Deputies responded to reports of Domestic Disputes 3 times in May where Kirby violated an order of protection & had subjected the victim to physical contact. Kirby was charged with Aggravated Harassment, Criminal Contempt, Reckless endangerment & on the arrest warrants, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.
A nurse who recently began working at the Broome County Correctional Facility has been charged after an investigation found she had stolen 8 pain pills earlier this week. 31 year old Meghan Manning of Troy, PA reported to her superiors that 8 pills with Codeine had gone missing from the Correctional Facility Pharmacy Room. Manning was charged with Falsifying business Records, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Petty Larceny, Manning was processed and given an appearance ticket to appear at the Town of Dickinson court, her employment with PrimeCare Medical has been terminated.

Sidney Police & EMS responded at about 6:10 this morning to the report of a Norfolk Southern Train & Pedestrian Accident at West Road. 34 year old Nikita Burns of Sidney was pronounced deceased at the scene, the investigation into the incident is continuing by the Sidney Police Department.

The 214th New York State Police Academy Graduation, was held today this morning at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. 228 new Troopers completed the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy, 26 of the new Troopers are being assigned to Troop C in Sidney.
An American Red Cross Blood Drive will be held in Laurens from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Laurens Fire Department, 34 Main Street. Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

The majority of the funding will be utilized to purchase a county-wide License Plate Reader network, to help in identifying and locating wanted criminals and fugitives entering the community, as well as helping locate stolen vehicles and vehicles involved in ongoing investigations. Some of the funding will also go toward purchasing a new Digital Forensic Computer and provide tablet and smartboard training technology for the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy.
