41 year old Franklin Gentry of Utica was arrested by Norwich Police Friday for Attempted Murder in connection with a fatal stabbing in Utica on February 15th. U.S. Marshals tracked gentry to Norwich, they coordinated with Norwich Police, Gentry was found Friday at West Main & Guernsey Street in Norwich at around 2:00 PM. Gentry was brought back to Utica by US Marshalls & faces court action On the attempted Murder charge, additional charges are anticipated.
Governor Hochul directed intelligence communities & cyber experts here in the State to coordinate with local law enforcement as well as federal law enforcement to Keep New Yorkers safe following military interaction with Iran in recent days:

The State DMV is urging New York Vehicle Owners to check their vehicles for safety recalls as part of Vehicle Safety Recalls Week this week through March 8th. State Department of Motor Vehicles officials stated that 1 out of every 5 cars on the road had an open recall, which amounts to about 2 million vehicles in New York, go to dmv.ny.gov to see if your vehicle has a recall.
The State DEC & Area Fire Departments announced that the annual Burn Ban will be from March 16th to May 14th this year. Open Burning of brush or debris is prohibited during that time-frame, to prevent wildfires & grass fires during the traditional driest time of the year.

Troopers are increasing their presence at religious, diplomatic, and cultural sites in coordination with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. So far, there were no specific, credible threats to New York, residents are asked to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
The Grand Union grocery store on East Main Street in Norwich is closing On March 7th, leaving many city without its only local grocery option within walking distance of Downtown. City officials are working with state & federal representatives to try to bring a centrally located grocery store to downtown Norwich. The Grand Union in Hartwick Seminary is also schedule to close permanently this week.
The Governor's Office reminds New Yorkers that March is Maple Month. State Police responded to a 3 vehicle crash on State Route 12 in the town of Greene, where a Mazda driven by 22 year old Makayla Cummings of Utica, was traveling south on State Route 12, when she crossed into the opposing lane, striking a Ford Focus head-on, driven by 44 year old Angel Kiekel of Nineveh. Cummings continued off the roadway and struck a parked Honda Civic, then she struck the exterior of a residence. Cummings & Keikel were both transported to Wilson Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Cummings faces charges for the incident.
30 year old Karl Calhoun pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Attempted Rape & Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On August 24th, Calhoun forcibly attacked a female, struck her multiple times, strangled her, and forcibly removed her clothing, she was able to resist the attack and escape to safety, the incident was captured on video surveillance, on September 5th, Vestal Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Calhoun, a search uncovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine containing 9 live rounds, Calhoun will be sentenced to 10 years in state prison for Attempted Rape and 7 years for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, the sentences will run concurrently, and Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and an Order of Protection will remain in effect.
State Police are reminding the public to be aware of phone scams that tell a victim to withdraw large sums of money or buy gold bars to “protect their assets”. Scammers will call asking if the victim made a large purchase on Amazon, if they did not, the caller is told that their identity and social security number have been stolen, they are “transferred” to someone who claims to be from a credit union or a bank and advises that the victim to withdraw their money or purchase gold bars so that it can be held for “safe keeping”. The scammers will send a “courier” to collect the money or gold bars. State Police BCI announced the arrest of 41 year old Akash Thakkar of Hiawatha, New Jersey for Grand Larceny for a June 2024 larceny where scammers swindled $500,000 in gold bars, Troopers were able to identify Thakkar as the man who picked up the gold bars, he was processed & was turned over to the Tompkins County Jail for Arraignment.

Delhi Police Department arrested 23 year old Xavier Calderon of New City on 2 counts of Criminal Trespass, on September 27th Calderon allegedly broke into a residence and when confronted by the occupants, claimed he was retrieving property he had left there the previous night, the investigation revealed that Calderon had been inside the residence on September 26, when the tenants were away, and that he had slept in one of the bedrooms without permission. The tenants reported that they do not know Calderon and had never authorized him to be inside the home. Calderon was taken into custody, was processed and transported to for arraignment, where a Temporary Order of Protection was issued.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident on I-81 in the City of Binghamton Thursday morning. Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol and emergency personnel responded to a 3-car accident on I-81 south at the off ramp of Exit 12, they found a U-Haul truck on fire with the driver entrapped in the vehicle, they attempted to extinguish the flames, the U-Haul operator was extricated and transported to Wilson Medical Center, but was was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The U-Haul was towing a vehicle, after merging from Route 17 and was approaching the off ramp of Exit 12 when an SUV attempted to merge across several lanes and struck the U-Haul, causing the operator to lose control and collide with a DOT attenuator truck. The identity of the deceased will be released pending notification of next of kin.

State Police responded Monday to a 4 vehicle crash in the town of Union. Investigators determined that 3 vehicles were stopped in traffic when 58 year old Michele Drossos of Endicott rear ended a Toyota driven by 28 year old Ryan Freita of Endicott, who was pushed into a GMC SUV driven by 63 year old Charles Mann of Endicott, which was pushed into a pick-up truck operated by 45 year old Joshua Malloy-Buczek of Endicott. 2 people were transported to Wilson Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, Drossos was ticketed and faces court action at a later date.
The State Department of Health is urging eligible New Yorkers to get the seasonal flu vaccine, following new federal statistics showing severe complications in children, last year there were 26 pediatric influenza-associated deaths reported statewide. Pediatric flu deaths have been increasing year over year from 3 deaths in the 2021-22 season, up to last year's 26, More information about the influenza vaccine is available at health.ny.gov.

The Chenango County Board of Supervisors signed an agreement with Cayuga Addiction Recovery Services or "CARS" of Ithaca, to comply with federal and state regulations, Chenango County Attorney Zachary Wentworth explains:

Wentworth said that in 2023 The State Legislature passed the law that requires individuals in a correctional facility be given their opioid use disorder drug of choice. Methadone is a pain management and opioid addiction treatment drug, that has been used for decades for fighting addiction.

The New York State Budget is 14 days late, and budget extenders have been implemented to pay state employees and keep state programs functioning. Assemblyman Joe Angelino said that the hold-up is one that has come up many times over the last 3 decades in Albany:

Angelino said that the big sticking point is the reforms to the state's discovery laws, which involves including late evidence being turned in from District Attorney's to Defense attorneys prior to a trial, the Governor wants some reform, much of the legislature does not.

The Chenango County Department of Public works will close County Road 39 between Old Gifford Road and State Route 206 in Bainbridge, starting Tuesday for the replacement of a large culvert. The road closure is expected to last 1 to 3 days, depending on weather conditions.

State Police arrested 37 year old Christopher Banks of Nineveh for Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. A search warrant was executed on April 4th, Banks was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that 38 year old Mark Banks of Nineveh sexually abused a dairy cow while employed at a farm in the town of Colesville. Banks was charged with Sexual Misconduct, both were issued appearance tickets to the Colesville Town Court on April 24th.
Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 57 year old Bruce Hines of the town of Union after they executed a search warrant Thursday, Hines resisted officers and had to be detained after a brief struggle. Officers confiscated Methamphetamine, Fentanyl, Digital Scales, Packaging Material and $304 in cash, Hines was charged with multiple Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and 2 Counts Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, plus Obstructing Governmental Administration & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility.
The Otsego County Solid Waste Department Plastic Film Recycling Challenge ends today. Participating schools collected film plastics such as Grocery Bags, Bread bags, Bubble wrap, The winner of the each division will receive an ice cream social event soon, last year over 6 tons of the plastics were diverted out of the waste stream in otsego county.

Delhi firefighters responded Sunday at around 12:00 Noon for a structure fire at 220 Rosa Circle. Early reports suggest that an electric car in a garage caught fire, the structure was a total loss, WCDO will have more information when it is released.
The New York State Budget is 14 days late, and budget extenders have been implemented to pay state employees and keep state programs functioning. Assemblyman Joe Angelino said that the hold-up is one that has come up many times over the last 3 decades in Albany:

Angelino said that the big sticking point is the reforms to the state's discovery laws, which involves including late evidence being turned in from District Attorney's to Defense attorneys prior to a trial, the Governor wants some reform, much of the legislature does not.

The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that Patrick Proefriedt of Colesville, pleaded guilty to 2nd degree Murder in Broome County Court. On June 26th, 2023, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office was called to 2208 Route 41 in the Town of Colesville for a report of a shooting, it was discovered that Proefriedt had shot his wife and newborn daughter with a crossbow. The child was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was released from the hospital later that day with non-life-threatening injuries, Proefiedt faces a sentence up to life in prison when sentenced at a later date.
State Police at Norwich were dispatched by the Chenango County 911 Center to State Route 12 in Oxford for a report of a vehicle on fire at about 1:20 AM Saturday. When Troopers arrived on scene, members of the Oxford Fire Department were extinguishing the fire and discovered the driver of the vehicle was deceased. An investigation determined that while northbound on State Route 12, the Nissan SUV went off the roadway, struck a guiderail then hit a tree and caught on fire. The driver and only occupant, is identified as 25 year old Christopher Ojuro of New Hartford.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated an animal abuse case where multiple cats were living in a residence, the owner was advised to get the animals treatment and was provided with contacts for local humane societies and veterinary clinics, she failed to improve the living conditions of about 70 cats, the majority of the animals were voluntarily surrendered to a 3rd party. Deputies were assisted by the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society and the Delhi Veterinary Hospital in Delhi to ensure the proper care of the animals. Deputies discovered that several animals died, they arrested 66 year old Gail Kutler of Walton for 5 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals & 60 counts of animal cruelty. Kutler was taken to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where she was held for arraignment, she is scheduled to appear at a later date in the Town of Walton Court.
State Police responded Saturday to the State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to the report of a deceased inmate at the facility in Marcy. 22 year old Messiah Nantwi was pronounced deceased at Wynn Hospital in Utica, the circumstances surrounding his death are part of an ongoing investigation by State Police & the Department of Corrections Special Investigations.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 29 year old David Piskacek of Margaretville following a DMV records check, Piskacek’s driving privileges were suspended and revoked 25 times and he was actively on probation supervision. Deputies released Piskacek at the time and directed him to respond to Delaware County Probation at a later date. On February 19th, while at Delaware County Probation, Piskacek was arrested for aggravated unlicensed operator, operating a motor vehicle without a court ordered interlock device, and unlicensed operator. Piskacek was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on a probation violation and was directed to appear at the Town of Middletown Court at a later date.

State Attorney General Letitia James co-led a coalition of 22 other attorneys general in filing a 2nd motion for enforcement in their ongoing lawsuit against the Trump administration's illegal federal funding freeze. Despite multiple court orders, the administration has continued to block hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to the states from FEMA, which freezes emergency preparedness and recovery programs addressing wildfires, floods, cybersecurity threats, and more. Attorney General James and the coalition's second motion for enforcement, seeks a court order to require the release of funds if the Trump administration is unable to provide evidence that they have been unfrozen.
The Nate Lull Scholarship application window is now open at Nate Lull.com. $15,000 dollars will be handed out this year, so far the Scholarship has handed out $45,000 dollars to local high school seniors in our coverage area. The deadline is May 16th.

The Delhi Police Department located 1 of the suspected vehicles, while Deputies located the second vehicle. Deputies located a quantity of Fentanyl, Methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a loaded handgun within the vehicle and on the occupants. Deputies arrested 29 year old Kenneth Dillmann of Stamford on various drug & weapons charges, plus Aggravated Unlicensed Operator, Also arrested was 23 year old Deanna Eignor of Delhi for various drug & weapons charges, Additionally, a third unidentified individual was arrested and charged with driving while ability is impaired by the use of drugs by the Delhi Police Department. All 3 were transported to the Delaware County Sheriffs Office to await the Centralized Processing Arraignment Court.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Shawn Taylor of Utica on a variety of drug charges following a a month-long investigation into drug sales, Taylor is accused of traveling to Chenango County from Utica and selling Crack Cocaine. On January 17th, 2025 a search warrant was executed in the City of Norwich on Taylor and his vehicle, a quantity of packaged Crack Cocaine was located. Taylor was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office for processing. Taylor is currently being held without bail at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

Norwich Police Department, in conjunction with New York State Parole concluded an investigation into the sale of narcotics, counterfeit currency and weapons. 28 year old Aaron Johnson of Norwich is charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument, Possession of a Narcotic Drug with intent to sell (Fentanyl), Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell (Methamphetamine) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Police were able to locate quantities of Cocaine, Methamphetamine and Fentanyl, plus counterfeit U.S. Currency. Johnson was held without bail, pending further court proceedings.
State Police, fire and emergency responders were dispatched to a 1-vehicle crash in the town of Andes. An investigation at the scene determined that a vehicle was traveling south on Fall Clove Road when it exited the roadway, striking a tree head-on. The operator, 43 year old Harland Dye of Delancey and the passenger, 34 year old Kate Cornelius-Schecter of Brooklyn, were transported to O’Connor Hospital, Dye was pronounced deceased at the hospital, Cornelius-Shecter was transported to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.

Roach is accused of violating a full stay away order of protection, by entering the victim's residence where an argument ensued, and Roach threatened the victim several times, and damaged the door when the victim locked him out. Roach fled on foot, and while deputies were on scene taking a statement from the victim, he called the victim twice, violating the order of protection again, he was located & was taken into custody without incident, he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Dimitri Grassi of Greene for 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 1count of Criminal Sale of a Firearm and Manufacture, Transport, Disposition and Defacement of Weapons. Grassi is accused of selling a fully automatic firearm to an Undercover Detective, he also possessed and sold a weapon with a high-capacity magazine, with partially removed serial numbers. Grassi was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Grassi was later released and is to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.
State Police arrested 52 year old John Standish of Owego for multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon, after Investigators discovered that Standish was manufacturing ghost guns and was in possession of firearms that are not NY SAFE ACT complaint, high-capacity magazines and silencers and that Standish does not possess a pistol permit and cannot lawfully possess a firearm. Investigators learned that Standish was using 3D printers to illegally make parts for the ghost guns. Standish was arraigned & faces future court action.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 18 year old Connor Ashton of Deansboro for Torturing or Injuring Animals/Failure to Provide Sustenance. Ashton was arrested following an investigation of an animal cruelty complaint from Sherburne. Ashton was released on an appearance ticket and is to appear in the Town of Sherburne Court on a later date.
18 year old John Koscinski of Utica was found safe, he was reported missing from SUNY Cobleskill, the State Division of Criminal Justice reported that Koscinski had been missing since Wednesday.

Wells was found to be operating the vehicle without an ignition interlock device installed as required per a court order & with a revoked driver's license, he was issued an Appearance Ticket for Edmeston Town Court at a later date.

Grassi is accused of selling a fully automatic firearm to an Undercover Detective, he also possessed and sold a weapon with a high-capacity magazine, with partially removed serial numbers. Grassi was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing. Grassi was later released and is to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.
State Police arrested 52 year old John Standish of Owego for multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of an Assault Weapon, after Investigators discovered that Standish was manufacturing ghost guns and was in possession of firearms that are not NY SAFE ACT complaint, high-capacity magazines and silencers and that Standish does not possess a pistol permit and cannot lawfully possess a firearm. Investigators learned that Standish was using 3D printers to illegally make parts for the ghost guns. Standish was arraigned & faces future court action.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 18 year old Connor Ashton of Deansboro for Torturing or Injuring Animals/Failure to Provide Sustenance. Ashton was arrested following an investigation of an animal cruelty complaint from Sherburne. Ashton was released on an appearance ticket and is to appear in the Town of Sherburne Court on a later date.
18 year old John Koscinski of Utica was found safe, he was reported missing from SUNY Cobleskill, the State Division of Criminal Justice reported that Koscinski had been missing since Wednesday.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 44 year old David Wells of West Winfield for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle without an Ignition Inter-lock Device & Speeding, among other charges, following following a traffic stop in the Town of Edmeston. Wells was found to be operating the vehicle without an ignition interlock device installed as required per a court order & with a revoked driver's license, he was issued an Appearance Ticket for Edmeston Town Court at a later date.

State Police responded at about 6:50 this morning to the report of a single vehicle crash on Broad Street in the village of Morris. An investigation at the scene determined that a 42-year-old male from Utica was operating an SYV when he crashed, he was pronounced deceased on scene. The roadway reopened shortly after 10:00 AM, the name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 5-count indictment against Charles Larson, for driving while Intoxicate, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, & operating out of class among other similar charges. Larson was arrested initially for operating a motorcycle in an intoxicated condition in the town of Colchester on October 20th, with his licensed already revoked, plus his licensed did not allow for him to operate a motorcycle.
The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for October 2024. The State's unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in October 2024. Locally, Chenango County had 2.8% unemployment, Delaware County 3.2% and Otsego County 3% in October.
The Clean Slate Act went into effect in New York State Saturday, which will automatically seal an individual’s New York State criminal records. The law states that Convictions under New York state law are eligible for sealing, Except for Sex crimes, Sexually violent offenses or class “A” felonies with the exception of drug-related convictions. The law does not apply to federal crimes or convictions in other states. For the record to be sealed, a specific period has to pass, 3 years for a misdemeanor & 8 years for a non”A” felony. Stephens suffered from smoke inhalation, 1 Trooper climbed a ladder and removed Stephens from the scene, he was taken to Wilson Hospital where he was treated & released, he was then charged with 2nd degree Arson & Menacing a police officer, he was taken to the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment.

New York City officials announced that they have elevated to a drought warning and paused the $2 billion Delaware Aqueduct Repair Project upstate, the reservoirs are expected to be re-opened to allow for more water to reach New York City, meanwhile the Statewide burn ban continues as wildfires continue to burn at more than a dozen locations, due to low water levels & exceedingly dry conditions. Various warnings have been released to conserve water because of drought-level conditions throughout the Catskill region and beyond.

State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on US-20 in the town of Plainfield. Police stated that a 56 year old woman from Sherburne veered into the opposing lane & sideswiped a tractor trailer driven by an unidentified man from Westerlo. The woman was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to a Utica Hospital with serious injuries the truck driver was not injured despite hitting a utility pole. The road was closed for several hours for the clean up & accident reconstruction efforts & for the repair of downed power lines. the investigation is continuing.
The Bainbridge Fire Department will hold their annual "Turkey Night" this Saturday Night at the Bainbridge Fire House, Bainbridge Firefighter Tom Akshar is organizing the event:

State Police arrested 39 year old Jason Katalinas of Sidney Center, for felony Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, plus Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Obstructing Governmental Administration. A Trooper on I- 88 in Unadilla went to check on a vehicle parked on the shoulder with its front driver side off, the Trooper arrested Katalinas, and his passenger, 33 year old Shane Katalinas of Unadilla, for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both were processed and were issued appearance tickets for town of Unadilla court at a later date.

The driver, Charles Dieterich of Grand Gorge, was on parole at the time and he was found to be in possession of fentanyl, meth, buprenorphine, and cocaine. Dieterich was charged with 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, His passenger, Nevaeh Ballard of Roxbury, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, for possessing cocaine. Both were released on appearance tickets and will appear in court at a later time, Dieterich was further referred to State Parole for possible revocation hearings.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 2 Correctional Facility inmates on assault charges. On August 1st, Investigators received a complaint of a fight that between 2 inmates, which resulted in injuries to 1 of the involved parties. Investigators arrested 22-year-old Dakota Mann on one count 2nd degree Assault & 31-year-old Timothy Reiche was charged with 1 count Attempted Assault, both were arraigned and were remanded back to the custody of Correctional Facility.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 3.1 Million Dollars or .2% in July compared to July 2023, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Upstate Counties & Small Cities increase by 1.2%, with 40 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

Sidney Police Department in a joint operation with NYS Parole, Otsego County Probation Department and State Police executed a search warrant at 22 Lincoln Ave in the Village of Sidney, which resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine, fentanyl and xylazine, Police arrested 41 year old Darcee Lewis of Sidney for Criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, & 43 year old Lloyd Hunt of Sidney, for Criminal possession of a controlled substance, Lewis was processed and transported to Delaware County Jail to await arraignment, Hunt was processed and released on an appearance ticket. The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected.
Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force approached a vehicle in a parking lot & 2 people were spotted asleep inside the vehicle, and narcotics paraphernalia were in plain view, Officers located 48 grams of meth. The Task Force executed a search warrant at a residence of one of the people in the vehicle, Logan Tribe-Filhart, Items used for packaging narcotics were found in the residence. Tribe-Filhart was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Using Drug Paraphernalia.

Police arrested 60-year-old James Perkins and 42-year-old Christy Roper, both of Hamden, Connecticut. after the Friday Morning heist, a search warrant was issued and following the search, proceeds from the robbery along with a large quantity of narcotics was located. Perkins & Roper were charged with Robbery, & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, The investigation is continuing.
