An Endicott man is facing a felony charge after allegedly stealing 27 iPhones from a FedEx facility while working for the company. Last Friday the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a larceny complaint at FedEx Freight East, at Industrial Park Drive in the Town of Kirkwood. Security at the facility advised that someone had been stealing from iPhones since April by sneaking them out of the facility in his coat pocket. After reviewing footage, 22 year old Leon Roberts of Endicott was charged with 3rd degree Grand Larceny. Roberts was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Kirkwood Court.

In Delaware County: Republicans will vote for a candidate for County Treasurer between Ronda Williams & Carli Pinner; In the Town of Sidney 4 Republicans are running for 2 seats on the Town Board, between Richard DeCola, Frank Selleck, William Hunt & Andrew Hinkley. Republican primaries are being held for Town Supervisor in Colchester, Hancock, & Meredith, more information is available at the County Board of Elections page at co.delaware.ny.us. On Monday Morning, the Colchester Town Police Department, the Downsville Fire Department and Emergency Squad, responded to a reported motorcycle accident on State Highway 30 & Delaware County Highway 7. The operator of the motorcycle, a 42-year-old female, left the roadway and struck a ditch, she was ejected, sustained serious injuries and was transported by LifeNet of New York to Albany Medical Center for advanced medical care.
State Police today announced that Troopers issued 27,208 total traffic tickets during the special “Speed Week” traffic enforcement campaign, from June 9th to June 15th. Troopers issued 12,703 tickets for speeding and 1,184 total tickets for Move Over Law violations. Locally, Troop C issued over 2300 tickets, including over 1400 tickets for speeding and 184 for violating the "Move Over" Law.
Amphenol of Sidney is celebrating 100 years in operation in the village of Sidney, with an Open House on Saturday July 19th, with a host of activities & exhibits at the Delaware Avenue facility. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in 32 New York counties after severe thunderstorms resulted in 3 deaths and thousands of power outages across parts of the state, and due to the forecast of extreme heat expected to last through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down early Sunday morning in Clark Mills, 3 people were killed from the Storms, The state of emergency exists in Broome, Chenango, Delaware & Otsego Counties locally.
Broome County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen rental car, where the victim stated that he had rented an SUV from Enterprise, but it had been stolen by his girlfriend, Christine Turner, who took the vehicle to Rochester and would not be returning the rental. On Friday, the missing SUV was located in Binghamton, patrols attempted a traffic stop, but Turner failed to comply, she eventually stopped & was forcibly removed from the vehicle, and her passenger, Christina Yacalis, were both placed into custody. Turner was charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration & Multiple traffic violations, Yacalis was charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substances, both were arraigned and were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Maine Court & City of Binghamton Court.
State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango County Thursday. All of the businesses checked were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an underaged operative. Businesses that complied included area Mirabito Quickway stores, Stewarts Shops, Speedways & privately owned liquor stores in Norwich, & Sherburne. During these investigations, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth.
The State DEC announced several proposed regulation changes to streamline use and reporting of hunting tags and provide new deer hunting opportunities. First, DEC proposes a process for using electronic carcass tags for deer, bear, and turkey. Second, DEC proposes to provide a replacement regular season deer tag to youth hunters who successfully use that tag during the Youth Big Game Hunt weekend. Finally, DEC also proposes to enhance the Deer Management Assistance Program by extending the permit renewal cycle from 3 years to 5 years, More information is available at the the DEC website.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and State Police responded to the Wells Bridge Fire Department for a report of a passenger of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigation revealed that the victim was attempting to help an uninvolved friend move out of a residence in the Town of Unadilla when 32 year old Ryley Decker of Unadilla, intentionally discharged a round from a shotgun at the victim, who was taken to the Fire Department, & then was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Decker was located at his place of employment and taken in to custody by the State Police without incident. A search warrant for the residence was aquired which revealed additional evidence of the crime. Decker was processed and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment, an order of protection will be issued on behalf of the victim. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 year old Richard Karl of Johnson City for Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Official Misconduct. The Sheriff's Office received a report of a teacher having an inappropriate relationship with a student, at the Greene school District, Karl is accused of subjecting a student or students to contact potentially damaging to the physical, mental, and moral welfare of the child. Chenango County & Broome Sheriff's Office arrested 56-year-old Karl Monday, he was processed & was turned over the Chenango County Corrections Division to be held for arraignment. The investigation is still ongoing, and more charges may come in the future.
The Norwich City Police Department responded to a call of 3 males walking on Pleasant Street with long guns. The police department contacted the schools in the surrounding area and requested they go into lock down. Officers from the Norwich City Police Department, the Chenango County Sheriff's Office and State Police saturated the area and located the 3 males who were identified and were carrying what appeared to be assault style weapons, the weapons turned out to be pellet guns. There was not danger to the public or surrounding schools.

State Police responded Saturday night to a 2 vehicle head-on collision on State Highway 12 in the town of Oxford. 51 year old Lawrence Slater of Norwich crossed into on-coming traffic and struck an SUV driven by 62 year old Steven Biviano of Oxford head on, Biviano did not survive. Slater was transported to Wilson Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is on-going.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 yar old Matthew Barnes of Walton man on an arrest warrant, back on March 5th, Deputies responded to a domestic incident where children were present in the Town of Walton, Barnes left before Deputies arrived, they requested & received an Arrest Warrant from the Town of Walton Court. Last Wednesday, Barnes was located and charged with 3rd degree Assault, 5 counts of Endangering the welfare of a child and 1 count of Obstruction of Breathing. Barnes was arraigned and was released on his own recognizance, he is scheduled to return to Walton Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded Saturday to a 1 car motor vehicle accident on County Road 14 in the Town of Smyrna, deputies found that the vehicle had rolled over and struck a utility pole. 5 of the occupants had self-extricated from the vehicle but 1 occupant was still entrapped. The occupant in the vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Hamilton, was pronounced deceased on the scene, 4 of the occupants were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the crash is still under investigation.
State Police arrested 54 year old Mark Baily of Hartwick, following a reported domestic dispute in the town of Exeter. Bailey was involved in a domestic dispute that turned physical, he is also accused of pointing a loaded crossbow at a victim’s vehicle as they left. Investigators determined that Baily owns several guns but is not allowed to possess firearms because he is a convicted felon. Baily was arrested for Menacing, Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was issued appearance tickets to the Exeter Town Court on May 14th.

The Chenango County Sheriff's Office responded Saturday to a 1 car motor vehicle accident on County Road 14 in the Town of Smyrna, deputies found that the vehicle had rolled over and struck a utility pole. 5 of the occupants had self-extricated from the vehicle but 1 occupant was still entrapped. The occupant in the vehicle, a 17-year-old male from Hamilton, was pronounced deceased on the scene, 4 of the occupants were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the crash is still under investigation.
State Police arrested 54 year old Mark Baily of Hartwick, following a reported domestic dispute in the town of Exeter. Bailey was involved in a domestic dispute that turned physical, he is also accused of pointing a loaded crossbow at a victim’s vehicle as they left. Investigators determined that Baily owns several guns but is not allowed to possess firearms because he is a convicted felon. Baily was arrested for Menacing, Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was issued appearance tickets to the Exeter Town Court on May 14th.

State Police arrested 37 year old Christopher Donaldson of Oneonta, early Saturday Morning for DWI, after Troopers were dispatched to a crash in Unadilla. Troopers arrived to find that a pick-up truck struck an embankment and ended in the driveway of a residence. Donaldson failed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, he was arrested and transported to State Police Troop C Headquarters where his B.A.C was .14%. Donaldson was issued appearance tickets to the Unadilla Town Court on April 1st and released to a sober third party.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43 year old Kristopher Kovack of Smyrna for False Written Statement, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Kovack was found to be in possession of stolen property, during the investigation, he provided a statement which was later found to be false. Kovack was arraigned at & was released on his own recognizance with a separate court date.
State Police arrested 31 year old Andrew Burdick of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania for Driving While Intoxicated. A Trooper was dispatched to a complaint about an ATV driving around Silver Lake Road and shining lights into a residence. The Trooper was able to locate an ATV flipped on its side on Bull Hill Road, Burdick was arrested & was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for centralized arraignment. State Police arrested 15 people for driving while intoxicated or impaired in Troop C from February 24th through March 2.
The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has placed 15 individuals on leave in connection with the death of 22 year old Messiah Nantwi, who was incarcerated at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy. this is the 2nd investigation of an inmates death at Marcy , the other being of Robert Brooks in December, the investigation into this Nantwi death is ongoing.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced that they will hold their next Networking event on March 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The event will be held at the new Chamber Office at 189 Main Street in Oneonta suite 401.
The Governor's Traffic Safety committee reminds area motorists that they must safely share the road with a variety of other users. These include slow moving vehicles such as agricultural and construction equipment as well as animal-drawn vehicles. The “slow-moving vehicle” symbol, a reflective triangle, must be displayed on the back of vehicles that travel less than 40 mph, motorists should slow down if they encounter a slow moving vehicle, and pass only in approved passing lanes.

Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News today that the closing date for the purchase of the former Acco Brands facility in Sidney is March 14th, and is being purchased by Copeland Associates of San Diego California. Initially a cannabis manufacturing facility will occupy part of the facility, with an estimated 400 employees, with another undisclosed area company planning to use the rest of the facility for storage..
21 year old Christian Rogler of the Town of Maine, pleaded guilty in Broome County Court for Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident and Attempted Rape. Rogler's guilty plea stems from two separate criminal incidents, last September in the Town of Dickinson, Rogler struck and killed Jamel Smalls of Binghamton, and fled the scene of the crash. Rogler will be sentenced to 2 and 1/3 to 7 years in State Prison, and in 2021, in Johnson City, Rogler engaged in an attempted sexual assault of an underage person, he will receive 3 and ½ years in State Prison, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision. Rogler is also required to register as a sex offender and a final no-contact order of protection will be issued for the victim. Sentencing is scheduled for May 28th.
34 year old Kyle Oakley of South Kortright was sentenced in Delaware County Court to state prison for violating the terms of his probation. Oakley had previously pleaded guilty in 2023, to 3rd degree Burglary because of a forced entry into a seasonal residence during March of 2022, he was sentenced to a 5-year term of felony probation supervision, in subsequent court appearances, he admitted to using illegal narcotics, Driving while intoxicated, obstructing governmental administration and this week, Oakley made further admissions to violating the terms of his probation. Oakley was sentenced to an indeterminate term of imprisonment to last no less than one year and no more than three years.
The Otsego County Solid Waste Department is continuing with the annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge where Otsego County Schools recycle things like bread bags, Grocery bags Bubble wraps & bring it to Trex Affiliated business where the totals are counted. King said that last year this challenge helped divert roughly 6 tons of plastic film from the landfills and helped promote recycling practices in our school aged community. The winning schools in each division will receive an ice cream social event in the spring.

State Police executed a search warrant in the town of Springfield for possible animal neglect. The investigation resulted in the removal of over 2-dozen animals. 8 dogs, 13 cats and 1 turtle were in need of immediate medical care and were turned over to the care of the Susquehanna SPCA. State Police were assisted by the Otsego County Emergency Services and the DEC, The investigation is on-going, charges are likely.
Governor Hochul & Mediator Martin Scheinman announced an agreement has been reached between striking Corrections officer & the state. The final agreement changes the "Halt Act over a phased in period, makes changes in shifts, overtime, approved leave, and the addition of a circuit breaker safety measure for inadequate staffing issues.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Joseph Schneider of Albany & 35 year old Samuel Smith of Hamilton on a number of drug charges, in North Norwich. Due to recent burglaries and larceny complaints Deputies were conducting property checks at storage units, when they observed a suspicious vehicle. Deputies located a quantity of Methamphetamine, packaging material, and a scale inside the vehicle. Schneider and Smith were taken into custody without incident. Both were arraigned and were released on their own recognizance. Schneider and Smith are to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

Deputies located Torres-Figueroa, who became irate that his vehicle was getting towed for being a traffic & snow removal hazard. Torres-Figueroa went into his residence and retrieved a kitchen knife and began to approach the Deputies and Troopers on scene aggressively and disobey commands to comply. Deputies and Troopers were able to subdue Torres-Figueroa, he was arraigned in Chenango County Court and remanded to the Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail while awaiting his next court date.
Organizers for the annual Binghamton St. Patrick’s Day parade announced that it will be held on Saturday March 1st , it will start at 1:30 pm. at Fayette and Court Streets, a number of organizations have signed up to participate this year.
