Sidney drug bust - On Thursday afternoon, after a 5-month investigation by Delaware County Sheriff's Office & Sidney Police, 4 area residents were arrested and charged as felony-level drug dealers. Arrested on Sealed Grand Jury Indictment Warrants issued were 37 year old Lewis “Sonny” Wolcott, Jr., of Sidney on 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling cocaine in Sidney late last year. Also arrested, 35 year old Stacey D. Sullivan, Jr., of Masonville, for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in or near School Grounds, for allegedly selling Heroin in Sidney, 34 year old Douglas Wilkinson of Sidney & Smyrna was charged with several counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling narcotics in Sidney. 34-year-old Amanda Caffery of Sidney was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance for allegedly Hydrocodone in Sidney, all 4 were arraigned on the Sealed Indictments in Delaware County Court this afternoon and were remanded to the Delaware County without bail.
Delaware County Sheriffs Department arrested 19-year-old Christopher Whitely, Jr., of Stamford, on a Sealed Grand Jury Indictment Warrant charging him with three counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling cocaine in Stamford last year. Whitely was additional charged with Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, which he had in a backpack, upon arrest, he was arraigned on the Sealed Indictment in Delaware County Court on Thursday afternoon and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.
State Police at Sidney arrested 24-year-old Brandon Burns of Sidney and 22-year-old Taylor Nelson of Afton for 2nd degree Burglary. Troopers responded to a Chenango County 911 report of a burglary to a residence on County Route 39 in the Town of Bainbridge, the investigation determined that Burns had entered his grandmother’s home with Nelson & without permission and stole two televisions. Both men were arrested and arraigned at the Bainbridge Town Court. Burns and Nelson were remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000.00 cash bail and $20,000.00 property bond.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of State Highway 10 and Delaware County Highway 2 in the Town of Hamden for a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident early Thursday morning. Deputies arrested 46-year-old Joel Ortega of El Paso, Texas for Driving While Intoxicated, aggravated DWI, Use of a portable electronic device while operating a motor vehicle, and speed not reasonable and prudent. Ortega is to appear in the Town of Hamden Court on July 20th to answer to the charges.
State Police at Binghamton arrested 27-year-old Amie Bowman of Windsor for Reckless Endangerment. The arrest occurred after a Trooper responded to a Broome County 911 report of a man jumping from a moving vehicle in the Price Shopper parking lot in the Town of Chenango, after his girlfriend drove recklessly after a dispute and would not stop and let him out. Bowman allegedly passed several vehicles recklessly at a high rate of speed and refused to stop on state route 12. Bowman was arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set.
The Sidney Central School District announced today that they are not soliciting funds for any informational folders/calendars or other items from an outside organization. Sidney School District Officials advise that you do not give money or personal banking information to any individual without checking with the school district first.

A City of Newark, New Jersey resident was arrested for 3rd degree assault and criminal mischief in Chenango County. Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 37 year old Daniel Lynch following an incident that occurred in February, Lynch is accused of being involved in a physical altercation with the victim at a business in the Village of Smyrna, where he allegedly caused a physical injury and damaged property. Lynch was released on an appearance ticket to appear in the Village of Smyrna Court at a later date.
The Otsego County Conservation Association will hold its annual “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Garage Sale on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26 in the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market building at 101 Main Street, Cooperstown. The Executive Budget holds down spending and boosts state reserves, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The proposed budget increases potential out-year gaps and gives the Executive new latitude to move and spend money outside the formal appropriation process, including billions of dollars in financial settlements. The Division of the Budget projects spending from State Operating Funds in the next fiscal year to total to increase by 1.7%, DiNapoli however estimates that spending would actually increase by 3.1%.
Former Walton teacher Stephanie Fletcher will serve 6 months in jail, followed by 10 years probation, following sentencing in Delaware County Court. Fletcher pleaded guilty to 2 counts of 3rd degree criminal sexual act for performing sexual acts with 2 underage male students from the Walton school district, while serving as a teacher there. Fletcher will be placed on the state’s Sex Offender Registry as part of the sentence for the conviction of sex crimes.
Several area fire departments responded to a fire at 1377 Turnpike Road in New Berlin. The fire started in the chimney early Saturday morning, & spread to the rest of the structure, it is listed as a total loss. No injuries were reported, The New Berlin Fire Department was assisted by fire fighters from North Norwich, Pittsfield, South New Berlin, Earlville, Sherburne, West Edmeston and Smyrna.
Governor Cuomo announced that $7.3 million in funding would go for the construction and rehabilitation of 19 affordable homeownership developments that represent more than 500 homes across the state. Local governments and not-for-profits that demonstrated specific affordable housing needs within their communities were eligible to apply through the Affordable Housing Corporation; locally, $320,000 Will go to the City of Oneonta for the acquisition and rehabilitation of 8 single family affordable homes & $350,000 will go to the City of Binghamton for the rehabilitation of 40 affordable units.
Area community college students are being reminded about the tuition reimbursement program from the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. The Higher Education Learning Plan provides tuition reimbursement to students attending college for up to 80 credit hours, who are also volunteer firefighters. Governor Cuomo today congratulated 226 new members of the State Police at the 202nd session graduation ceremony from the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy in Albany. The new State Troopers will report for duty beginning February 12 to posts throughout the state, 52 new troopers are reporting to Troop C Headquarters in Sidney. For the following 10 weeks, the new troopers will be evaluated under a field-training program supervised by senior Field Training Officers.

Thursday's Hancock game with BG will begin with the JV game at 5:30 PM and the Varsity at 7:00 PM.

Local lawmakers are calling for Sheldon Silver to resign as Speaker of the Assembly, following his arrest Thursday in New York City. Area Assemblyman Cliff crouch responds:

Silver turned himself in to the FBI Thursday on corruption charges; he is accused of failing to disclose income he received from a second law firm, while serving in as Assembly Speaker, Silver posted $200,000 bail Thursday afternoon.
The Chenango county district attorney's office announced the indictment of 2 men Wednesday. THOMAS ACKERMANN was indicted for 4th & 5th degree Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, SAMUEL ACKERMANN was indicted on 2 counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree. Chenango county sheriff’s department arrested the 2 town of Otselic residents for allegedly stealing firearms taken from the town of Smyrna.
State Police from Sidney arrested 29-year-old Robert Utter of Otego for criminal obstruction of breathing, criminal contempt & 2nd degree harassment. The arrest resulted from an Otsego County 911 report of a dispute, the investigation determined that during a dispute Utter allegedly punched and choked his wife. This conduct violated a valid order of protection that was issued against him by the Oneonta Court. Utter was arraigned in Town of Franklin Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $500.00 cash bail.
