The Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call for a burglary in progress on Morgan Hill Road in the Town of Afton. The caller reported that when he entered his building and unknown individuals fled the scene out the rear door of the building. The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team & Deputies patrolled the wooded area behind the house, hours later, they arrested 37 year old Jessica Palmatier of Bainbridge, for Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, 3rd degree burglary, and she was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. State police assisted, they arrested the 2nd suspect, 39 year old Jeb Davis of Sidney, and he was charged with 3rd degree burglary & was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility with no bail.
The tri town coalition on substance abuse prevents has 2 events this week. Tonight at the Sidney High School “Hiding the High” will be presented in an “Adults” only session, beginning at 7:00 PM. The next regular Monthly meeting of the coalition will be held Thursday night at 6:00 PM at the Sidney High School featuring Dr. Samantha Cole, regarding the unique substance abuse problems locally.

The Otsego County Sheriff's department, the Susquehanna Animal Shelter & Southern New York Pig Rescue in Hornell teamed up Monday to remove 4 pigs that were malnourished, from a property on Fisk Road in the town of Morris. Fundraising efforts were underway to have the pigs spayed or neutered by the Cornell University Veterinary program, the name of the owner of the pigs has not been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.
Cornell Cooperative Extension & Chobani have teamed up for a series of informational workshops regarding the financial aspects affecting the Dairy Industry. A workshop will be held at the Quality Inn of Oneonta on Wednesday October 31st, & on Thursday November 1st at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Norwich. Governor Cuomo & Republican Candidate Marcus Molinaro held a televised debate last night, carried on CBS Affiliates around the state. The debate only featured the 2 major party candidates & did not include Libertarian Larry Sharpe, Green Candidate Howie Hawkins and independent ex-Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner.
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, will hold a news conference this morning in Binghamton to outline his criminal justice reform agenda, in front of the State Office building at 44 Hawley Street. Hawkins will appear at 10:30 AM. He is also scheduled to speak at SUNY Binghamton at 6:30 PM.

Officials from Artspace will be in Oneonta today & tomorrow to listen to the needs of the artist community and to look for creative ways to support the arts and the City. Various discussions will be held at the Foothills Performing Arts Center starting at 1:00pm today, capped off with the public meeting at 7:00 PM. 2 more meetings are scheduled for Thursday morning, also at Foothills.

State Police at Deposit are investigating a fatal industrial accident the Courier Printing Corporation on Laurel Bank Avenue in Deposit today. The incident occurred at the loading dock. At this time, the name of the deceased is not being released. The investigation continues.
An unidentified Town of Milford resident surrendered 52 Llaso Apso dogs to the Susquehanna Animal Shelter in Cooperstown Tuesday. 10 of the dogs have been transferred to the Delaware Valley Humane Society in Sidney, DVHS Director Erin Insinga Commented:

The Milford dogs were suffering from a variety of issues & they are being treated, no charges are expected to be filed against the unidentified previous owner.
Sidney Village Superintendent of Public Works Mike Mercurio announced that Norfolk Southern railroad will be closing the Union Street crossing starting tomorrow for routine repairs & maintenance, the crossing will be closed until further notice by the railroad.
Delaware County Planning department will be seeking public input to create the county's 1st comprehensive plan. A public meeting will be held today at the Hamden Town Hall from 5:00 to 6:00 PM.
State Police at Norwich arrested 36 year old Michael Brown of Pitcher for 3rd degree Assault, Menacing & Harassment, after Troopers responded to a physical dispute where Brown is accused of threatening 3 women with a pocket knife. Brown sustained lacerations and was treated at Chenango Memorial Hospital, he was taken into custody and arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond and is to appear in the town of Pitcher Court on October 16th, an order of protection was issued to all 3 women.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Jason Babcock of Sidney for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, and several Vehicle and Traffic Law Violations. Babcock was charged after a traffic stop in the Town of Norwich, he was found to be in possession of approximately 6 grams of cocaine, marihuana, and an open container of alcohol. Babcock was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court; he is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date.
state Police at Oneonta arrested 46 year old Tracy Neves of Otego for DWI & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Troopers initiated a traffic stop following the report of a driver acting suspiciously in the town of Oneonta, Neves was intoxicated and in possession of hydrocodone pills, he was arrested and arraigned in the town of Oneonta Court, he was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to reappear on October 18th.
State Police arrested 37 year old Kelly French of Binghamton for DWI, after a trooper was dispatched to a vehicle on Interstate 88 driving the wrong way. French was located on the side of I-88 in Afton after she ran out of gas; she was issued appearance tickets for town of Afton Court on October 22nd.
The Oneonta Common Council will hold the next regular meeting this evening. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in the council chambers at Oneonta City Hall.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18 year old Dana Bitter of Oyster Bay on 1 count of driving while ability impaired by drugs. Bitter is accused of operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs & that a passenger in Bitter’s vehicle was suffering from a drug induced overdose. The passenger was treated on scene and subsequently transported to Delaware Valley Hospital, Bitter was released on tickets returnable to Walton town court at a later date.
Sheriff’s Deputies and NYS DOT Inspectors conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden. 6 inspections were conducted, Deputies issued 15 summonses for various safety violations including defective brakes, unsafe tires, fuel leaks, uncovered load, inoperable lamps, steering gearbox loose from frame, insufficient warning devices, frame cracked, major oil leaks and a flat tire. 3 of the commercial vehicles were taken out of service.
State Police arrested 25 Year old John Corgan of New Berlin for DWI, after Troopers were dispatched to a 1 car accident on State Highway 8 in New Berlin. Corgan drove off the road into a field and then struck a building, He released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of New Berlin Court on October 17th.
The State DOT announced that a long-term winter traffic pattern on State Route 7 over Kelsey Brook in Afton will go into effect during this week. Traffic will be shifted from the westbound lane to the new portion of the bridge on the eastbound side over Kelsey Brook. Temporary traffic signals will control traffic.
The American Red Cross will hold blood drives in Sidney & Masonville today. The Sidney Blood drive will be held from 2:30 to 6:30 PM at the A.O. Fox Tri-Town Campus, at 43 Pearl Street West, the Masonville Blood Drive will be held at the DCMO BOCES campus from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Donors of all blood types are needed; appointments can be made by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

29 year old Corey Robinson was sentenced to 15 years in state prison today in Broome County Court, for the shooting of 46 year old Erika Smith-Cunningham, in Johnson City on Easter Sunday. Robinson had been at a house party at 92 Crocker Avenue in Johnson City; he left after a fight broke out & returned later & fired a shotgun into the building, fatally striking Smith-Cunningham. Robinson fled to Georgia; he was extradited back to New York to face prosecution.
U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $225,000 in federal funding for the Oneonta Municipal Airport. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program. The funding will be used to purchase new snow removal equipment.
The Binghamton Devils have announced their 2018 training camp schedule at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Players have their first on-ice practice at 10:30 AM Tomorrow morning. Training camp will run through Friday, the Devils invite the general public to Open Practice on Thursday; the doors will open at 10:00 AM. The Devils will open up the 2018-19 season at home on Saturday, October 6 at 7:05 p.m. against the Toronto Marlies.
The State Department of Health should continue to improve how it informs the public of potential hazards in public drinking water systems, according to an audit released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. New York has 9,155 public water systems, which serves 95% of all New Yorkers. The audit stated that when water safety violations occurred, the Department did not always take appropriate or timely action to hold water systems accountable for required follow-up, such as notifying the public. Of the 126 water safety violations that auditors sampled, the Offices lacked evidence that system operators
notified the public 46% of the time, 21% were issued late. DiNapoli recommended that they prioritize actions to regulate emerging contaminants with known adverse health effects; and to make sure that safe drinking water is distributed to the public through a robust monitoring program that reports issues to the public in a timely fashion.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Town of Sherburne man for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, and additional vehicle and traffic law violations. Deputies arrested 32 year old Kyle Lafever of Sherburne following a 1 car motor vehicle accident on County Road 32 in the Town of Norwich. Lafever allegedly was involved in 2 separate motor vehicle accidents and leaving the scene of the first accident. In the second motor vehicle accident deputies responded to the scene and administered first aid to Lafever. He was found to be in possession of heroin and a hypodermic syringe. He was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital. Lafever is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Town of Plymouth man for Burglary and Grand Larceny in the Town of Pharsalia. 23 year old Austin Demuth of Plymouth is accused of unlawfully entering the residence of a victim and stealing several items, valued at more than $1,000, in July. Demuth was located hiding in his residence in the Town of Plymouth, he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced their annual small business and Entrepreneurial spirit award recipients. Directive, of Oneonta, is the recipient of the Key Bank, 19th Annual Small Business of the Year Award; The Otsego ReUse Center is the recipient of the Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield Breakthrough Business of the Year. The award winners will be honored at the Chamber’s Small Business Banquet that will be held on Thursday, October 11th at The Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, beginning at 5:45 PM.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a one car, roll-over, accident in the Town of Hamden Friday afternoon that resulted in 18 year old Lilliana Bevilacqua of Franklin, sustaining minor injuries. Bevilacqua was driving on Covert Hollow Road when she lost control on a curve due to excessive speed, her car entered a ditch, struck a tree and overturned several times. Bevilacqua exited her vehicle, she was transported to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi for treatment of an arm injury. Deputies issued Bevilacqua traffic summonses for speed not reasonable and imprudent, failure to keep right, and making an unsafe lane change and directed her to appear in the Hamden Town Court on a later date to answer those charges.
State Senator Jim Seward announced that community libraries throughout the 51st senatorial district have been awarded a total of nearly $655,000 in public library construction grant funds. Locally, libraries in South New Berlin, Andes, Edmeston, Worcester & Hartwick will receive funds.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 30 year old Jennifer Giacalone and 29 year old Christopher Mills of Deposit, on sealed Grand Jury Indictment Warrants issued by the Delaware County Court. Giacalone and Mills were indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury for allegedly filing false written instruments and collecting public assistance benefits which they were not lawfully entitled to. Giacalone has been charged with 9 counts of offering a false instrument for filing & 1 count of welfare fraud, Mills has been charged with 1 count of offering a false instrument for filing & 1 count of welfare fraud, they were remanded to the Delaware County Jail pending further court action.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 47 year old Timothy Smith of Walton for 1 count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unregistered Motor Vehicle, and Unlicensed Operator, following a traffic stop. Deputies discovered that Smith’s Driver’s License had been suspended, he was released on an appearance ticket and scheduled to appear before the Town of Walton Court at a later date.
The Binghamton Devils announced today that the club will play a preseason series against the Utica Comets next month. The Comets will host Binghamton on Friday, September 28th at the Adirondack Bank Center at 7:00 PM, the following night, Saturday, September 29th the 2 teams will play at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena at 7:05 pm. The Devils will host the Toronto Marlies in the home opener, Saturday, October 6th at 7:05 PM. The Broome County Sheriff's Office responded Wednesday to a fatal crash in Windsor. 57-year-old Stephen Rynearson was driving a van on Route 79 when he failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. Rynearson was not wearing a seat belt and alcohol was a contributing factor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Oneonta Parks & Recreation committee wwill hold their next regular meeting this evening. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the Common Council Chambers at City Hall, and is open to the public.

Governor Cuomo has more than $31 million in his campaign account after raising $6 million over the past six months, according to filing information that was made public this week. Democratic primary opponent, actress Cynthia Nixon raised about $1.6 million since she launched her candidacy; Republican candidate Marcus Molinaro raised $1.1 million.
State Police arrested 23 year old Mackenzie Gardner of Bainbridge for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Harassment. Troopers were dispatched by Chenango County 911 to a physical domestic at a residence in Bainbridge, Gardner is accused of striking a victim and putting his hands around the victim’s throat obstructing breathing, he was arraigned in the town of Bainbridge Court & was released, he will return to Bainbridge Court on July 24th, the victim was provided with an order of protection.
25 year old Justin Tait of Unadilla was arrested by State Police Sunday after he allegedly threw a 25-pound weight at a vehicle. Tait was arrested after a domestic dispute, he was charged with Criminal mischief and harassment, he was arraigned & was released in his own recognizance, and he faces court action on August 13th. The unidentified victim was issued an order of protection.

The Village of Unadilla was awarded funds under the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program, for $375,000 to provide a Village-Wide Owner-Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program. The required public hearing will be held tonight to solicit comments and answer questions regarding the Grant Program or grant activities, the hearing tonight will begin at 6:30 pm at the firehouse on Clifton Street.
NYSEG crews responded to the reports of almost 3000 customers without power following several small powerful storm cells today. Outages were reported throughout the southern tier into the Capital District, where most of the outages were reported.
Registration forms for the Bainbridge-Guilford after School Care Program are due by August 1st. The program is open to all students Pre-K through 6 and will be held at Greenlawn Elementary School starting September 6. Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies report that the Town of Hancock Highway Department recovered the heavy duty York rake that was stolen earlier this month in the Town of Hancock. Dr. Richards said that the proposals received were from the Kildonan School of Amenia, to turn the building into a school for Dyslexic children, from LPP Management for a mixed use facility & 2+4 Management for senior apartments.
State Police are investigating a 1 vehicle crash on State Route 357 in the town of Unadilla that troopers discovered while on patrol. The Unidentified 40 year old man apparently drove off the highway, into Guide wires & a tree, he was extricated by Unadilla Firefighter & he was airlifted to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City for treatment of head injuries & an arm fracture. The investigation is ongoing.
The Town of Sidney Offices, including the Court, has been moved into the New Sidney office building at 44 Grand Street. Sidney Town Supervisor Gene Pigford comments:

The next Town of Sidney Board meeting will officially be held in the 44 Grand Street location in Sidney. The moves were precipitated by the sale of the Sidney Civic Center to 2+4 Management Company, who have built senior apartments on the 2nd & 3rd Floors, which forced offices to move to the 1st floor, or out of the building into new locations.
Otsego County Sheriff's department arrested 36 year old Ryan Biggs of Gloversville following an accident in Worcester Sunday. Biggs is accused of driving mentally & physically disabled people in an ARC vehicle while intoxicated, he was charged with DWI & endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disable person, he was released & faces court action at a later date.
A Cortland man was found guilty by an Otsego County Jury for selling heroin & cocaine in the city of Oneonta recently. 34 year old Jason Chase was found guilty after the jury deliberated for about 40 minute, he was returned to the Otsego County Jail pending sentencing on August 3rd on 2 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28 year old Aaron Dumond of Denver New York for Tampering with Physical Evidence & Conspiracy, after a reported Assault in Roxbury in May. Dumond allegedly altered and concealed physical evidence; he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond pending future court action.

State Police at Deposit arrested 25 year old William Caiati of Tompkins, for Aggravated Family Offense, Criminal Mischief, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Harassment. A trooper responded July 4th to a domestic dispute, where 1 victim reported that Caiati placed his hands around her neck, restricting breathing and she was shoved to the ground and injured her wrist, Ciaiti is also accused of disabling the victim's phone. A second victim reported that he allegedly punched her when she attempted to intervene. Caiati left, but was located by phone & turned himself in, he was arraigned in the town of Deposit and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 cash bail. An order of protection was also issued.
State Police at Oneonta arrested 28 year old Kevin Matthews of Worcester for Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle. Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that was taken without the owner’s permission, Matthews allegedly took the vehicle on July 4th, another vehicle in that driveway sustained damage. Troopers observed the vehicle on I-88 in Richmondville, they arrested Matthews for Driving while Ability Impaired by Drugs and other charges. Matthews was later turned over to troopers at SP Oneonta where he was arrested for Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle. He was arraigned in the Decatur Town Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $1000 cash bail or $2500 bond.
State Senator Jim Seward joined officials from local domestic violence prevention programs Monday to announce state grants totaling $45,000 to help support key community services. The funding awards included: Opportunities for Otsego - $15,000; Catholic Charities of Delaware, Otsego & Schoharie Counties - $15,000; Delaware Opportunities - $7,500 & Liberty Resources in Chenango County - $7,500.
State Police at Sidney arrested 35 year old Ronald Greek of Dansville, for DWI with a reported B.A.C of .24%. A trooper on State Route 23 in Oneonta where Greek is accused of Speeding & being intoxicated, He was arrested & was released on appearance tickets for town of Oneonta Court on July 24th.
State Police at Sidney arrested 39 year old John Forte of Unadilla for Aggravated DWI with a reported B.A.C of .21%. Troopers were dispatched to a complaint of an intoxicated driver, a trooper located the vehicle in the driveway of a residence on Depot Street, Forte was arrested & was released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Unadilla Court on July 23, 2018 then later turned over to a sober third party.

State Police responded to a fatal Motor Vehicle Accident on State Route 17 in the Town of Hancock Sunday. A vehicle went off the highway & down an embankment; the responding trooper found the vehicle with the driver deceased inside. More information is expected to be released shortly.
Norwich Police and the Chenango County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of 37 year old Andres Figueroa & 46 year old Lourdes Medina of Norwich on charges of Criminal sales of a controlled substance & criminal nuisance. Police investigated narcotics sales starting in May & they executed a 'No-knock' search warrant at a North Broad Street apartment. Figueroa and Medina were sent to the Chenango County Jail, Figueroa on $50,000 bail and Medina on $20,000 bail, pending action in Norwich City Court on Wednesday.
33 year old Sean Martin of Binghamton was sentenced Monday in Chenango County Court to 90 days in jail & 5 years post-release Supervision, for driving drunk during a 1 vehicle crash that killed his brother. Martin pleaded guilty in April to vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated, in connection with the September 24th 2017 crash on State Highway 41 in the Town of Greene
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28 year old Tara Doring of Franklin, on 1 count of criminal obstruction of breathing, 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, 1count of harassment & 1 count of trespassing, Doring is accused of being was involved in a physical altercation with another individual while four young children were present. Doring was arraigned and was released on her own recognizance, she is scheduled to reappear at the Town of Kortright court at a later date.

State Police arrested 47 year old Audra Hart-Brendel of Afton for felony of Criminal Contempt; the arrest followed a complaint made on June 5 claiming Hart-Brendel continuously made contact with a victim that had an Order of Protection against her. Hart-Brendel was arraigned in the town of Windsor Court and was released in her own recognizance; she will appear in court again at a later date.
The City of Oneonta is applying for grant assistance through the State DOT Aviation Capital Grant Program for the purposes of replacing the airport’s existing aircraft fuel farm with two new 12,000 gallon tanks in a new location remote from the terminal building. Today is Primary day in New York State, Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced her office's Election Day Hotline, will be available today to help voters at the polls during the federal primary election. The Attorney General’s hotline is 800-771-7755; their email address is civil.rights@ag.ny.gov, both are available until 9:00 PM. Locally, there are 7 Democrats running for the 19th Congressional District, to take on incumbent Republican John Faso in November.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Department Investigators arrested 37 year old Amber Potts of Margaretville, on a Sealed Indictment Arrest Warrant issued by Delaware County Court. Potts was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling Hydrocodone on 3 occasions, from her Village of Margaretville residence. Potts was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility with no bail; more arrests and additional charges related to this investigation are anticipated.
State Police arrested 53 year old John Nitz of Streamwood, Illinois for DWI, Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and several other traffic tickets. Troopers were dispatched to a 2-car motor vehicle accident in the town of Pittsfield, where a vehicle towing a camper struck a truck parked on Texas Hill Road and never stopped. Nitz was arrested and arraigned in the town of Morris Court; he was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $500 cash bail or $1,000 bond.
Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Harpersfield for a report of horses in the roadway. Deputies found several horses without proper feed and water, as well as a downed horse that had to be euthanized by its owner. It was further determined that the horses had not received any veterinary care for an extended period of time. Deputies arrested 46 year old Eric Palmatier, 24 year old Francis Thomas, 20 year old Amanda Thomas and 19 year old Erica Palmatier, all of Harpersfield, with failure to provide proper food and drink to animals and failure to provide proper sustenance to animals.
Walton Town Supervisor Charles Gregory has died of a heart Attack, according to the Delaware County Board of Supervisors Clerk’s Office. Gregory became Walton Supervisor in 2016; he previously served as a Walton Village Trustee and served in the Walton Fire Department.
43-year-old Belven Fajardo of Endwell has been convicted of Attempted Arson; after he attempted to set fire to a Johnson City building using "Molotov Cocktails". Fajardo was arrested after he allegedly intended to cause damage to the building, following an earlier domestic dispute. Fajardo is scheduled to be sentenced on September 13. He faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 25 years in state prison.

The Norwich Fire Department announced that Jan Papelino was unanimously voted to become the fire chief by all six members of the city council. Papelino was an assistant fire chief and volunteer for 39 years & will succeed the recently retired former chief, Tracy Chawgo.
The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 30 year old Rashi Johnson of Queens, as he exited a bus in Binghamton. Johnson is accused of possessing 217 bags of heroin and 7.3 grams of crack cocaine, Johnson is charged with 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell & Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance.
20 year old Kurtis Richards of Johnson City faces up to 20 years in federal prison for his involvement in a meth-manufacturing lab. Richards was part of an arrest of 16 people charged with operating a meth lab in the Southern Tier. Richards will be sentenced August 9th in US District court in Binghamton, for his guilty plea for possessing the pseudoephedrine, an over the counter medicine used to manufacture methamphetamine.
The State Legislature approved of Barbara Underwood remaining as interim attorney general in the aftermath of Eric Schneiderman's resignation. Underwood will stay on as the Attorney General until the end of the year; she will not seek election for the office in November.
State DEC officials are warning New York Motorists to be on the lookout for turtles in the road. Thousands of turtles are killed each year in New York by vehicles; Turtles migrate to nesting areas in May and June, and are more likely to cross roads near rivers and marshy areas. State environmental officials remind drivers that they should only stop and move turtles when conditions are safe.
The Arc Otsego is accepting artwork submissions for its 14th Annual Voice event, which will be held July 27th through August 10th in the Fine Arts Building at SUNY Oneonta. The opening reception will be held on July 27th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, anyone living in New York State who is 18 years of age or older and has an intellectual and/or other developmental disability may submit artwork for consideration. The artwork submission form is available at www.arcotsego.org. The deadline for submissions is June 10th.
A.O. Fox Hospital will offer training for teenagers interested in becoming junior volunteers. Governor Cuomo's office announced that he will take on Cynthia Nixon in a televised debate. The details of the debate are still being worked out, such as the date & location of the event.
The State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for April. The number of private sector jobs in the State was 8,155,700 while the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.6% in April. Locally, Chenango County's unemployment rate was 5.6%, Delaware County was 6% & Otsego County was at 5.1%
The State DOT will host an open house public information meeting this evening at 6:00 PM at the Colesville Town Hall on Welton Street in Harpursville regarding the Dilly Road culvert replacement project. The proposed work zone traffic control will require an approximate 2 week closure of Dilly Road at the intersection of State Route 7. Traffic will use a three-mile, six-minute detour. Dilly Road accommodates an average of 60 vehicles daily. The project is in the preliminary design phase. Construction is currently scheduled for the 2019 construction season.

The Chenango County DPW announced that they will close County Route 37 between County Road 36 & Keach Road in the town of Guilford, on Tuesday May 29th. Nick Libous, the son of the late State Senator Tom Libous, announced his candidacy for the 122nd State Assembly Seat today. Libous currently resides in Deposit & is Vice President Wireless Construction Solutions in Binghamton; he is seeking the seat occupied by Republican Incumbent Assemblyman Cliff Crouch, who is seeking re-election for the seat he has held since 1995.
Both major political parties will have their convention Wednesday & Thursday of this week. Democrats are holding theirs on Long Island, as actress Cynthia Nixon tries to push her way past incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is expected to be endorsed at the convention by Hillary Clinton. Republicans are holding their convention in New York City, where Marcus Molinaro appears to be unchallenged in his party for the gubernatorial nomination.
A Chenango County Grand Jury indicted 39 year old Regina Donovan of Norwich for making a terrorist threat. Donovan is accused of making a threat against a Norwich Middle School employee on March 20th in response to the alleged bullying of her daughter at the Middle School.
The City of Oneonta Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee meeting will be held tonight at City Hall. The workshop will be held in the 2nd floor Common Council Chambers to finalize the writing of the vision statement, the meeting begins at 7:00 PM & is open to the public.
The Next Chenango County Free Rabies Clinic will be held this evening for dogs, cats & domesticated ferrets. The clinic will be held at the Columbus Town Garage on State Highway 80 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.
The Unatego Central School District announced that the will be soliciting proposals for repurposing the former Otego Elementary School. The community-based Repurposing Committee, & the Unatego Board of Education is inviting developers and others who are interested in purchasing the property, a Request for Proposals is available online at unatego.org or at 988-5038. The Property consists of a 47,800 square foot 2-story building and 4.8 acres of land.

State Police conducted a traffic stop on I-88 in the town of Milford for a traffic violation. An investigation by Troopers and CNET resulted in the seizure of approximately 4 pounds of marihuana and approximately $3,500 cash. Troopers arrested Javice Lawrence, Ronnie Smith and Toshaun Guthrie of Albany for Criminal Possession of Marihuana, they were arraigned in the Town of Hartwick Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies, arrested 46 year old James Henderson of Walton, for Reckless Driving, Failure to keep right, moving unsafely from lane, and parking on pavement. Henderson is alleged to have not stopped his vehicle during Walton Police Department’s attempt to execute a traffic stop, after driving erratically, nearly colliding with 3 vehicles. Henderson was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond,.
State Senator Jim Seward joined officials from the Village of Cooperstown and the Friends of Doubleday Field to announce a $1 million state grant to help fund major renovations and improvements at Doubleday Field. The grant will fund a portion of a $5.8 million renovation project to Reconstruct the third base bleachers; build a multi-purpose building behind the third base bleachers with office space, press box, and public space for event rental; Pedestrian friendly entrance from Main Street, potential relocation of the Sandlot Kid statue closer to the grandstand area; Improvements to the field; & Americans With Disability Act accessibility improvements.

Alternate Jurors were selected & the trial of Jeremy Coates is underway in Chenango County Court. Coates is charged with 2nd degree murder for the September 2016 =killing of 58 year old Daniel Green in Green’s Oxford home. The trial is expected to take 2 weeks to complete.

Governor Cuomo announced the nation's largest state investment in computer science, as the new state Budget includes a $6 million annual investment in professional development for teachers, paired with the creation of new academic standards for computer science. The program is designed to ensure that every elementary, middle, and high school across the state provides computer science education by 2025.
Delaware County Sheriff Deputy’s arrested 37 year old Benjamin Pankiewicz & 31 year old Ashlee Calabrese of Walton for Attempted Assault after they had engaged in a physical altercation with one another. Pankiewicz was also arrested for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, as the altercation occurred while a child was present. Calabrese was issued an appearance ticket, having to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date. Pankiewicz was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 cash or $1,000 secured bond.
The City of Oneonta Department of Public Service announced this year’s schedule for curbside residential brush and yard waste pick-up. City residents wards 1 through 4 will be picked up on Monday April 16th, those living in wards 5 to 8 will be picked up the following Monday, April 23rd. Residents should have brush and yard waste out no sooner than the weekend before the scheduled pick-up to prevent possible code violation.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced criminal convictions and a civil resolution against Broome County trash collection firms, Bert Adams Disposal and Taylor Garbage Service. The 2 companies conspired to rig bids, allocate customers, and fix prices for trash and recycling services, which forced residents and businesses to pay artificially inflated prices for essential services, they also colluded on bidding for municipal contracts. As part of Bert Adams Disposal’s guilty plea, it will be required to pay $850,000 in criminal penalties. Taylor Garbage Service, Inc. will pay $500,000 in civil penalties, and Robert Taylor, the company’s president and co-owner, will also pay a $50,000 penalty to New York State.
A New York State Budget Presentation will be presented Today at 12:00 Noon, at The Northeast Classic Car Museum, in Norwich. State Commissioner RoAnn Destito of the State Office of General Services will make the presentation.
Governor Cuomo announced that the State Department of Health has issued a health advisory to hospitals, emergency departments and urgent care centers following severe and life-threatening bleeding cases in Illinois, Maryland, Wisconsin, Indiana and Missouri, due to the consumption of synthetic marijuana believed to be contaminated with rat poison. To date, no cases have been reported in New York State. Synthetic marijuana is sold with street names such as K2, Spice and AK-47, which consists of plant material coated by chemicals, which are supposed to mimic the effects of naturally grown marijuana.
