Chenango Memorial Hospital is closing the long-term care unit located on the hospital’s second floor as of January 31st. CMH will no longer be accepting new residents and, over the next 2 months, they will work closely with our residents and their families to ensure their placement in other long-term care facilities. 19 residents are currently at the facility, and employees of the facility will be transferred to other positions across the Hospital's departments. The hospital’s board and leadership team are currently exploring options for alternative uses for the second floor of the hospital.
Bassett Healthcare Network’s board of directors announced that President and CEO, Dr. Tommy Ibrahim, has decided to leave the organization at the end of the year. The Bassett Healthcare Network board has voted to appoint Staci Thompson, who is the Bassett Healthcare Network’s current executive vice president and chief operating officer, as Dr. Ibrahim’s successor, on an interim basis starting on January 1st. Over the coming weeks, Ibrahim and Thompson will work together with the Bassett Healthcare Network board of directors and executive leadership team to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
Attorney General Letitia James today announced the takedown of a major drug trafficking ring that was distributing heroin and fentanyl, as well as powder and crack cocaine in Rensselaer, Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Dutchess counties. The takedown resulted in the indictment of 25 individuals charged with 164 crimes and recovered cocaine, heroin laced with fentanyl, which have a street value of approximately $350,000 plus 4 handguns, 2 large capacity ammunition feeding devices, and the seizure of over $50,000 in cash.
A Lawsuit was filed in Broome County Supreme Court against the Vestal School District where a former Vestal High School student alleges that economics teacher Robert Carr asked her to meet him, he allegedly kissed the victim numerous times, groped her inappropriately and continued to force sexual activity upon her until she moved to the state of Texas and changed her phone number. The lawsuit claims that School Officials did not take any action against Carr after learning of the accusations.

On Tuesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to the US Marshal’s Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22 year old Nathan Williams Jr. of Endicott, at 68 Thorp Street in the City of Binghamton. Williams was wanted by the Endicott Police Department for Murder in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Molique Dawson in Endicott in July. The Metro SWAT Team of the Binghamton Police Department executed the search warrant and Williams was successfully taken into custody after a 5 hour standoff, Williams was transported to the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility, arraigned at Central Arraignment and is currently being held without bail.
Congressman Marc Molinaro announced over $3.5 million in federal funding will go to 9 airports for infrastructure improvements. Locally, the Greater Binghamton Edwin Link Field Airport will get about $1,000,000, the Tri-Cities Airport in Endicott: $144,000, the Eaton Airport in Norwich: $144,000, the Sidney Municipal Airport: $144,000 & the Albert Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta: $113,000
Long time Sidney resident Les Gregory passed away at the age of 100 on Monday, Calling hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 7 pm., at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be at 11 am. Friday, at the Sidney United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty Street, Burial, with military honors, will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
The Oneonta City School District will hold a capital project public meeting tonight on their $30.4 million dollar project. The meeting will be held at 6:00 PM at the Oneonta High School Auditorium, voting on the project will be in December.

26 year old Simon Wysong of Delhi was indicted Thursday in Delaware County Court, he is accused of Driving While Impaired by Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, and Fentanyl in the Town of Davenport on July 26, 2022. Wysong was driving at a high rate of speed on County Highway 10 when he failed to stop at a stop sign, crossed onto State Highway 23 & collided with another vehicle. Wysong's passenger was killed, the driver of the other vehicle suffered serious physical injuries. The Grand Jury indicted Wysong for Vehicular Manslaughter, Assault, 2nd degree Manslaughter & Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, he faces up to 8 1/3rd to 25 years in state prison if he is convicted of the most serious charge. Wysong will be arraigned on the indictment in Delaware County Court on October 23rd.
2 people were arrested following a traffic stop in Norwich regarding a stolen motorcycle, that led to a chase that ended in Unadilla. Norwich Police had attempted a traffic stop, the driver, Cody McCrady of Chenango Forks & passenger, Nichole Wiggins of Greene, fled. The pair were taken into custody in Unadilla. The investigation revealed that the Motorcycle was stolen from Manlius and the license plates were reported stolen from Johnson City. McCrady was charged with Reckless Endangerment, Criminal possession of stolen property, & criminal possess of a controlled substance, Wiggins was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Wiggins was released on an appearance ticket, McCrady was being for arraignment.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies received a complaint regarding a group of students from Walton High School who received a message via a social media app, which contained threats to bomb the Walton School and cause harm to other students. Deputies responded to Walton and interviewed multiple students and it was determined that the threat was made after school hours and that an 18 year-old student of Walton High School did make threats to “bomb” the Walton High School. The juvenile was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat and was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.
Commerce Chenango announced that 3 local museums are participating in the "MUSEUMS & MORE" event tomorrow. A variety of activities are scheduled tomorrow at the Bullthistle Model Railroad Museum, The Northeast Classic Car Museum & the Chenango County Historical Society, all in Norwich. The Broome County District Attorney's Office announced that a plea deal was given to 35-year-old Bradley Law of Harpursville. Law admitted to operating the vehicle in a hit & run Crash that killed 13 year old Brennan Loveless as he was riding hid Bicycle along Route 7 near his home in Sanitaria Springs back on New Year’s Day. Law was sentenced to 1 1/3rd to 4 years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal accident and a weapons charge.
State Police reported that 16 year old Emily Clapper was located in good health in the city of Oneonta by Oneonta Police. Clapper was reported missing on October 2nd.
The Chenango Arts Council will present the Norwich Theater Company this weekend, with a Neil Simon Classic, according to spokesperson Mary Beth Miller:

The Norwich & Vestal Walk-a-thon will be the only in-person events, the rest will be virtual, the Chenango County Child Advocacy Center in Norwich is one of the charities that will benefit from this effort. Walkers should register in advance with estimated miles to be walked at MatthewsWalkathon.Com or at Weiler Park on the day of the event. Matthews will distribute up to $150,000 to the charities based on the miles walked and the percentage of votes each charity receives during registration.

State Officials are urging New Yorkers to not perform any strenuous exercise outside, those with asthma or Heart Disease should try to stay indoors in air conditioning is possible.
The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 34 year old Bayso Vannavongso pleaded guilty to 3 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, he admitted that on July 26, 2022, he illegally possessed a loaded .38 revolver, a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun and a semi-automatic rifle, in the Town of Binghamton. Police responded to the Vestal Hills Country Club in the Town of Binghamton to a report of a man shot with a crossbow. Vannavongsa was shot by Carson Vanco after a dispute, where Vannavongsa fired shots at Vanco from the revolver but missed, he recovered from being shot with the arrow.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is once again teaming up with the National Child Safety Council, who help fund a variety of programs benefiting Delaware County Children, according to Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond:

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced an update following the issuing of an Executive Order By County Executive Jason Garnar last week, that prohibits hotels and multiple dwellings from contracting with municipalities to house large groups of individuals. The Sheriff’s Office learned that a least 2 local hotels in Vestal were contacted by a New York City officials 2 days before the executive order, to try to house migrants then in New York City, to Broome County, both hotels declined. Sheriff Fred Akshar stated that they began their investigation prior to the state of emergency declaration & Deputies are continuing to monitor the situation and have been ordered to turn away any vehicles involved in exporting the migrants.
A New Sienna Institute Poll today showed that for the 1st time, Governor Hochul 45% of those polled viewed her unfavorably, while 40% viewed her favorably. Her Job Approval rating dropped 6% to 44%, however a strong majority think that Hochul is a hard worker at a 58 to 20% rating. The poll shows that 38% think the new state budget will be good, while 26% said that it won't.

The Delaware County Sheriff's office announced that on May 9th, Deputies were dispatched to respond to a motor vehicle accident that occurred in the Town of Delhi. 41 year old Akila Kerr of Delhi, was the driver of the vehicle, Deputies suspected alcohol was a factor & conducted field sobriety tests. Kerr was charged with Driving While Impaired and Driving with a BAC of 0.08% or higher, as well as speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to keep right and move from lane unsafely. Kerr was released on appearance tickets and scheduled to appear before the Town of Delhi Court.
Delhi Village Police, assisted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the State Police Computer Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at 2 residences in the Town of Walton, where a quantity of electronic devices was seized by the police. Officers arrested former Waton Town Supervisor Joseph Hanley on a Sealed Indictment Warrant issued by the Delaware County Supreme Court, he was charged by Grand Jury indictment with Attempted Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Attempted Disseminating Indecent Material to a Minor. Hanley was remanded to the Delaware County Jail pending arraignment before the Delaware County Supreme Court.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced an update following the issuing of an Executive Order By County Executive Jason Garnar last week, that prohibits hotels and multiple dwellings from contracting with municipalities to house large groups of individuals. The Sheriff’s Office learned that a least 2 local hotels in Vestal were contacted by a New York City officials 2 days before the executive order, to try to house migrants then in New York City, to Broome County, both hotels declined. Sheriff Fred Akshar stated that they began their investigation prior to the state of emergency declaration & Deputies are continuing to monitor the situation and have been ordered to turn away any vehicles involved in exporting the migrants.
A New Sienna Institute Poll today showed that for the 1st time, Governor Hochul 45% of those polled viewed her unfavorably, while 40% viewed her favorably. Her Job Approval rating dropped 6% to 44%, however a strong majority think that Hochul is a hard worker at a 58 to 20% rating. The poll shows that 38% think the new state budget will be good, while 26% said that it won't.

The United States Department of Justice announced Tuesday that 30 year old Shelby Ortiz of Maryland, New York was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison and a 20-year term of supervised release, for distributing child pornography. Ortiz also will be required to register as a sex offender upon her release from prison. Ortiz pleaded guilty in October 2022, she admitted that she subjected a 7-month-old boy to sexual contact which was video recorded and sent to to a person living in Florida with whom she was participating in an online and telephone dominant/submissive sexual relationship. The case was investigated by U.S. Homeland Security, the Oneonta Police Department, and the State Police
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced that 27 year old Brandon Morse of Edmeston was charged with cashing a stolen check last month was arrested again over the weekend for falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement. Morse is accused of lying to authorities about a man outside of his residence with a gun. Prior to the February arrest, Morse allegedly stole a $3,500 check from a local business and cashed it illegally. Morse was released with an appearance ticket and is due back in court at a later date.

The 2023 Norwich St. Baldrick's "Brave the Shave" fundraising event was held at the Norwich American Legion Post 189 Saturday, the fundraiser to support childhood cancer research raised $49,236 this year with the event. Delaware County Board of Supervisors were notified that the federal civil rights suit filed against the County by former Social Services Commissioner Dana Scuderi-Hunter, was dismissed by the U.S. District Court Monday. Scuderi-Hunter had filed the civil rights suit last year, claiming that the County had violated her 1st Amendment rights; that she was denied due process as part of her 2019 dismissal; and that the County’s actions were retaliatory as a result of her testimony during a Family Court proceeding. U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Kahn, ordered the claims made by Scuderi-Hunter be dismissed on the basis that the claims had already been litigated and decided by the State Appellate Division in February 2022, she additionally appealed that decision, which was denied last June, she then sought an appeal from the State Court of Appeals which was also denied. Judge Kahn also dismissed Scuderi-Hunter’s claims that County Attorney Amy Merklen had a conflict of interest in carrying out her duties as assigned.
The Village of Sidney Police Benevolent Association endorsed Acting Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith in this year's race for the the Delaware County District Attorney's Position. The Association stated that they reached this decision following an increase in communication, transparency & compassion from the DA's office & Staff since Smith became the Acting DA January 1st. Smith faces a primary in June from fellow Republican Joe Ermeti of Sidney, who announced his candidacy recently for the DA position.

Delaware County District Attorney's office announced that 71 year old Vincent Balsamo of Walton was arraigned on a sealed indictment in Delaware County Court Monday. The Indictment charges Balsamo with 2nd degree Manslaughter, 2nd degree Assault & Reckless Endangerment, for repeatedly choking, strangling & slapping & striking 52 year old April Kestner of Honesdale Pennsylvania at his residence in the Town of Walton in December 7th of 2022. Balsamo faces 5 to 15 years in jail on the Manslaughter charge, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional facility on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.
The City of Oneonta announced that there will be one lane traffic at the intersection of Main Street and Gardner Place in order to tie the new sewer pipe into an existing sanitary sewer manhole. Temporary traffic signals with stop bars will be used to direct traffic and maintain a steady flow. The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists to expect daily single lane closures along both directions of State Route 434 (Vestal Parkway) between Murray Hill Road in the Town of Vestal and Pennsylvania Avenue in the City of Binghamton, weekdays from 6:30 am. to 6 pm. through approximately October 15. The lane closures are necessary to facilitate construction of a multi-purpose pedestrian path.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to disabled vehicle on County Highway 26 in the Town of Hamden. During the course of the investigation Sheriff’s Deputies identified the driver as 21 year old Edwards Khali of Delhi, Deputies discovered that Khali’s vehicle was suspended due to an insurance lapse. Khali was charged with with Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended Registration & Unregistered Vehicle, he was released on an appearance ticket, and was directed to appear before the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer for the charge.

The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 34 year old Kyle Babola of Johnson City pleaded guilty for the killing of 55 year old Scott Grover in Johnson City on New Year’s Eve in 2021. Babola killed Grover by striking him numerous times with a machete during a dispute at 330 Floral Avenue. He will be sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison in April 2023.
The City of Norwich is receiving federal money for the upcoming water Main replacement project downtown, City Community Development Director Eric Scrivener told WCDO News that they will be working with other agencies to do the water main project followed by paving in the effected downtown areas:

Sidney Central School District 7th Grader Bella Phelps will be competing in the 1st New York State High School Wrestling Championships tomorrow in Syracuse, her coach Tony Ferrara comments:

On January 17th, Deputies were notified that Arnott was at the Delaware County Family Court surrendering herself on an active Delaware County Family Court Arrest Warrant. Deputies arrested and arraigned Arnott on the warrant, she was committed to the Custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending further appearance in court, at a later date.
The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services' Office of Counter Terrorism conducted training exercises at more than 1,000 locations statewide in 2022, As part of this process, teams assessed suspicious activity reporting and recognition at 842 retailers and businesses that sell chemicals, compounds, components, services, or rent space or resources that could be exploited by those with nefarious intent. Additionally, teams assessed more than 180 infrastructure locations across the state, including stadiums and arenas, malls and shopping centers, colleges and universities, airports, transit hubs and other mass-gathering locations.
State Department of Health announced that the XBB.1.5. variant is now the most dominant strain in New York, accounting for more than 50 percent of COVID-19 infections statewide, which may indicate that XBB.1.5. is more transmissible than other circulating variants, though there is not yet clear evidence of the severity of strain. The percentage of those testing positive for COVID 19 is down to 6%, with Patient Hospitalization down to 3,029, ICU patients numbers are down to 313 with 124 on ventilators, with 33 deaths reported over the course of the latest 3 day testing period.

Yager was last known to frequent the Kirby Street area of the Town of Bainbridge, she is described as a white female, 5'4, 115 pounds, with blue eyes, and brown hair, she is wanted for violation of probation for criminal possession of a controlled substance. Anyone with information on the location of Yager is asked to contact the Broome County Sheriff’s Office at gobroomecounty.com/sheriff/warrants or by calling the Broome County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (607) 778-1196.
Otsego County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the report of a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck colliding on I-88 in near Exit 15 Wednesday morning. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, the driver of the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. State DOT crews, state police and the Oneonta Fire Department also responded to the scene, part of the highway was closed temporarily for the clean up & investigation, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

State DOT crews, state police and the Oneonta Fire Department also responded to the scene, part of the highway was closed temporarily for the clean up & investigation, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Broome County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division arrested 36 year old Matthew Hackel of Vestal, for failing to register an address with the State Sex Offender Registry. Hackel was processed and is currently in the custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Correction Facility.
