Governor Kathy Hochul announced that Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant has been awarded to the Village of Morris for $4.5 million as winners of the 4th round of the NY Forward program. Butternut Valley Alliance Chairperson Maggie Brenner told WCDO News what happens next:

The size of the state workforce grew for a third straight year in 2025 increasing by 2.7%, Overtime hours and earnings have continued to surge at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, The figures were influenced by the strike by some Corrections employees that took place between Feb. 17, and March 10, 2025.

The Unadilla Fire Department responded Thursday Afternoon at about 2:10 PM to a reported brush fire in the town of Unadilla. 1st arriving crews encountered a large brush fire making it's way up a hillside, NYSEG crews responded to turn off power lines, Firefighters were able to contain the fire and then attack any hot spots following the power shut off. An estimated 4.1 acres burned with all crews being back in service around 5:30 PM. No injuries were reported.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand slammed President Trump’s tariff tax hike, as her office has received numerous stories from constituents concerned about the return of higher inflation. Gillibrand signed on to the bipartisan Trade Review Act, calling for Congressional oversight on all proposed tariffs:

Senator Gillibrand also said that she has signed on to a letter demanding that the Trump administration immediately repeal the tariffs, however, the President has doubled down with threats to increase tariffs on China from 54% to 110%.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 32 year old Branden Ward of Sangerfield for 3rd degree Assault. Ward was arrested following an investigation of an assault at the Otsego County Correctional Facility, where Ward allegedly struck another inmate which caused physical injury, he was processed and issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.
Long Time Chenango County Restaurateur Gary Kurz, who for many decades operated the Silo Restaurant in Greene, passed away in his Florida home Tuesday. Kurz was 72, funeral arrangements are being organized for the funeral to be held in Greene, and will be announced shortly.

54 year old Jason Burress of Bainbridge pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs in Delaware County Court Tuesday. Sidney Police conducted a traffic stop in Sidney on July 11th, 2024, a blood analysis confirmed the presence of methamphetamine in the defendant’s blood. Sentencing will be on May 6th, he will likely face 6 months in jail & will have his license revoked.
34 year old Milton Jordan-Martinez of Buchanan pleaded guilty in the Town of Deposit Court on Monday to Driving While Intoxicated, and he was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge. Jordan-Martinez was pulled over on March 15, on State Highway 17 in Deposit after State Police received a report of an erratic driver, he failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, he had a BAC of .13%. Jordan-Martinez will be required to attend a Victim Impact Panel, his license will be revoked for 6 months, he will have to install an ignition interlock device on vehicles he owns or drives, if he violates any terms or conditions of his conditional discharge, he is subject to being re-sentenced to one year in jail.

The State Legislature has passed the final State Budget Agreement for the 23-24-fiscal year. In the budget, an Agreement was reached To Provide Greater Discretion for Judges To Set Bail for the Most Serious Crimes; There were no Income Tax Increases in the Budget, additional funds were approved for mental health care, abortion access, Capital project at SUNY & CUNY Schools, increases in the education portion of the budget & increases in the Minimum Wage to $15 in the upstate counties over a 2 year period to adjust with inflation,
Local government sales tax collections in New York state totaled $5.5 billion in the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 7.1%, compared to the same period last year, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. DiNapoli’s report found that sales tax collections increased by 9.2% in January and 14.1% in February, but the growth slowed to 0.3% in March. Collections for the counties and cities outside New York City grew by 3.3%, in the first quarter, with 50 out of 57 counties experienced sales tax increases during the quarter.
The Delaware County Board of Elections confirmed that, following yesterday's public hearing, a republican party primary will be held in the race for District Attorney. Joe Ermeti of Sidney will face acting District Attorney Shawn Smith in the primary on June 27th.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for Jaquir Smith on an outstanding warrant, for criminal possession of a weapon, Smith is described as a black male, with long black hair and brown eyes, he is 5'10" tall and about 150 pounds, Anyone with information of Smith is asked to contact the Broome County Sheriff’s Office at their website at gobroomecounty.com or by calling the Broome County Sheriff’s Office tip line at (607) 778-1196.

Also, General Mills is recalling certain Gold Medal Flour products due to potential Salmonella issues. The Delhi Police Department responded to the report of a potential Active shooter incident at the Delaware County Courthouse, at about 10:30 this morning, which led to a lock-down & evacuations of downtown businesses and the Delaware Academy, according to Delhi Police Chief Mike Mills:

Chief Mills said that his department received assistance from State Police, Delaware County Sheriff's Office & SUNY Delhi University Police, he also said that there was no panicking among those who had to clear out the area downtown, The village was re-opened as normal by early this afternoon.

All 62 counties in New York State will be covered for the launch of the new 988 Lifeline, which will ensure that anyone with a New York area code contacting 988 will be connected to one of New York's 988 crisis centers. In 2020, NYS received 142,827 calls, a 13 percent increase in just one year.
The Tops supermarket store in Buffalo, which was the site of a mass shooting that killed 10 people on May 14th, will reopen to the public this Friday. The store has been closed & underwent extensive renovations since the shooting, 18 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin is being held on 10 counts of 1st-degree murder, 2nd-degree murder as a hate crime and 3 counts of attempted murder as a hate crime, he is being held without bail pending future court action.
The Susquehanna SPCA is looking to find homes for 12 dogs that would do best in families without small children or other pets. Their “Singles Night: Meet Your One and Only Pet” will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the shelter on State Route 28. Tioga Downs Casino Resort President and CEO Jeff Gural has been nominated by President Joe Biden to join his administration, as the chair of the Public Buildings Reform Board. The Board is an independent agency used to identify opportunities for the Federal government to significantly reduce its inventory of civilian real property, which would cut costs. Gural is expected to accept the nomination.
39 year-old Isaac Anzaroot of Brooklyn was arrested today by the Binghamton Police Warrant Division. Anzaroot is the owner of numerous properties in the city, he was wanted on 12 bench warrants and 2 arrest warrants related to housing code violations & for failing to appear in court to answer those violations. The Binghamton Code Department condemned the First National Bank building at 95 Court due to fire alarm system issues, which forced many of Anzaroot's tenants to locate elsewhere.

The State DOT will be installing a new water main on State Route 7; Main Street in Otego, starting today, to facilitate a pavement, sidewalk and drainage project. Work will result in a short interruption of water service to village residents beginning at 10:00 AM, for about 3 hours.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office issued a follow up report on a 2019 audit of the Hancock Fire Department. The audit included recommendations for rental payments, disbursements made by the Treasurer and collections from the clothing organization, ambulance corporation and fundraising activities. Auditors revisited the department this year, the department has had 1 of 10 recommendations implemented, 3 were partially implemented and 6 were not implemented.

Tioga Downs Casino Resort President and CEO Jeff Gural has been nominated by President Joe Biden to join his administration, as the chair of the Public Buildings Reform Board. The Board is an independent agency used to identify opportunities for the Federal government to significantly reduce its inventory of civilian real property, which would cut costs. Gural is expected to accept the nomination.
39 year-old Isaac Anzaroot of Brooklyn was arrested today by the Binghamton Police Warrant Division. Anzaroot is the owner of numerous properties in the city, he was wanted on 12 bench warrants and 2 arrest warrants related to housing code violations & for failing to appear in court to answer those violations. The Binghamton Code Department condemned the First National Bank building at 95 Court due to fire alarm system issues, which forced many of Anzaroot's tenants to locate elsewhere.

The State DOT will be installing a new water main on State Route 7; Main Street in Otego, starting today, to facilitate a pavement, sidewalk and drainage project. Work will result in a short interruption of water service to village residents beginning at 10:00 AM, for about 3 hours.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's office issued a follow up report on a 2019 audit of the Hancock Fire Department. The audit included recommendations for rental payments, disbursements made by the Treasurer and collections from the clothing organization, ambulance corporation and fundraising activities. Auditors revisited the department this year, the department has had 1 of 10 recommendations implemented, 3 were partially implemented and 6 were not implemented.

3 Buildings & 4 Vehicles were destroyed in Saturday's early morning fire on Main Street in Worcester. Firefighters were able to remove one person from 1 of the buildings, Otsego County & State Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
State Police will participate in a national crackdown on distracted driving as part of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The enforcement effort, called Operation Hang Up, will include increased patrols and checkpoints targeting drivers using electronic devices while behind the wheel. This year’s enforcement detail will run from Monday, April 4, through Monday, April 11.
Norwich Police Department conducted a traffic stop on State Street Sunday, that resulted in the arrest of2 Norwich men on Drug Charges. Arrested were 30 year old Brett Adams of Norwich & 22 year old Brendan Smith of Norwich for criminal possession of a controlled substance, Adams and Smith were arraigned at Norwich City Court. Brett Adams was held on $1,000 cash bail, and Brendan Smith was released on his own recognizance to appear in court at a later date.
Volunteer fire departments across New York will open their doors on Saturday, April 23rd, and Sunday, April 24th as part of the 13th annual RecruitNY weekend. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched Saturday to the State Hwy 10 and Falls Mills Rd in the Town of Delhi for a report of a male subject walking in the roadway. A 2nd call stated that a male subject had been struck by a passing motorist in that same vicinity. Deputies & Delhi Fire Department & EMS located 18 year old Damyan Bonilla of Chester New York, who was taken to O’Connor Hospital with injuries & he was later transferred to Bassett Medical Center for further treatment. Deputies determined that Bonilla was walking on State Route 10, he was struck by a vehicle, the investigation in on-going.

A new Sienna College Poll shows that 2/3 of New Yorkers and more than 50% of Democrats think that former Governor Andrew Cuomo shouldn’t run for Governor again this year. If Cuomo enters the race against Kathy Hochul, he trails her 38-30%, Hochul was Cuomo’s lieutenant governor before he resigned in August. Hochul still has a commanding lead in the upcoming primary, over announced candidates New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Long Island Congressman Tom Suozzi.

Governor Kathy Hochul and Erie County officials announced an agreement between New York State, Erie County and the NFL's Buffalo Bills franchise for a $1.4 billion new stadium in Orchard Park. The Governor secured a 30-year commitment for the Bills to remain in Buffalo, and a combined $550 million from the NFL and Bills - it was approved today by the NFL owners. The Governor will advance a $600 million proposal in the state budget, and Erie County will contribute $250 million. The economic and tax impacts generated from the team will support more than 100% of the public share of the new stadium cost.
The New York State Department of Agriculture issued an order prohibiting all live fowl shows and exhibitions in New York State this year to help prevent the spread of the avian flu that has hit 17 states so far. Four flocks have tested positive for the avian flu so far in New York. It's also been detected in wild birds, including snow geese and wild ducks across the State. Several other states have joined New York, banning poultry exhibitions including Arkansas, Iowa, and Georgia. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
The Oneonta West Street construction project between Chestnut and Center streets began today, and will continue weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM through Mid August. The project calls for the replacement of water mains, sewer mains, manholes, catch basins, fire hydrants sidewalks & related infrastructure. Detours will be posted, Construction work will be done between 7 am. and 3:30 pm. on week days and is expected to be completed in August prior to the return of students to SUNY Oneonta & Hartwick College.

State Police responded Saturday to a report of a fire at home on Johnson Road in the town of Kirkwood. Troopers arrived on the scene and found that 87 year old Nancy Wellman had been removed from the home, a 2nd woman was still inside the residence, Members from the State Police utilized fire extinguishers in an attempt to locate 94 year old Eve Roys, who was ultimately located by members of the Five Mile Point Fire Department. Both women were transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital, Roys died at the hospital, the investigation is on-going.
The State Health Department reported Saturday that the COVID positivity Rate was still at 2.3% after over 120,000 tests were conducted & over 2700 were positive. Patient Hospitalization are still declining, down to 823, with 135 ICU patients & 57 on Ventilators, there were 7 deaths attributed to the virus in Hospitals & Nursing homes.
Delaware County Public Health announced that this will be the final weekly COVID-19 Dashboard posting. The County posted 51 new cases of COVID 19 in the week of March 19th through the 25th. there have been 15 deaths in Delaware County from the Virus since January 1st.
The Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 51 year old Penni Mills & 59 Year old Leonard Mills of Norwich Saturday on a number of charges. Penni Mills was charged with Harassment, after the Chenango County Sheriff's Office investigated an ongoing neighbor dispute, Leonard Mills was charged with Harassment, Petty Larceny and Criminal Tampering, both face action in Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
Chenango County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 37 year old Angela Harrington of New Berlin on a Family Court Warrant issued by Chenango County. Harrington was remanded to Chenango County Correctional Facility and is to appear to Chenango County Family Court at a later date.

August 23rd is the scheduled date for an Otsego County Supreme Court hearing in the case of the City of Oneonta against Nicolai & Melania Pervu, the owners of 195 Main Street. The city accuses the Pervu’s of having unsafe conditions for the tenants of the building; residential tenants were evicted by the city last month.
The state’s 2018-19 Enacted Budget Financial Plan projects that spending will outpace revenues over the next 3 years with potential cumulative gaps totaling $17.9 billion, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The $170.3 billion spending plan is up $6.5 billion from last year, while Total receipts are expected to by $541 million, to $166 billion. The Division of the Budget expects that the state will utilize 42% of the $9.4 billion General Fund balance from last year into the current fiscal year, and that General Fund reserves will decline to $2.9 billion by SFY 2021-22. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Department arrested County Jail Inmate Leroy Holley of Binghamton on charges of 2nd degree attempted assault, following an alleged fight with another inmate, causing minor injuries. Holley was arraigned & was remanded back to the Otse3go County Jail pending court action today in town of Middlefield Court.
The City of Oneonta is holding information sessions on the $2.3 million grant program. Local business and property owners can seek grant funding to renovate, repair and improve properties, with signage & facade improvements, among other possible projects. 3 sessions are being held at the Foothills Performing Arts Center throughout the day, the first one was held at 9:00 a.m, the 2nd one is at 1:00 PM, and the last one will be held at 6:00 PM. Governor Cuomo announced that more than $1 million has been awarded to New York State farmers through two grant programs designed to promote growth in the state's agriculture industry. The New Farmers Grant Fund assists new and early-stage farmers, and the Veterans Farmer Grant Fund supports farms owned and operated by military veterans. In the Southern Tier; Lilley Farms, LLC, Chenango County will receive $47,589 to Build and equip a livestock barn and purchase field equipment to expand the farm's herd and increase sales.
State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the 4th of July holiday. State Troopers will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target reckless and aggressive driving statewide in an effort to keep New York highways safe during one of the busiest summer holidays for travel. This special enforcement detail will run through Thursday, July 5th.
State Police arrested 33 year old Michael Swantak of New York Mills, for felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, after a trooper observed Swantak commit several vehicle and traffic infractions while on Interstate 88 and State Route 205 in Oneonta. A traffic stop and an investigation revealed that Swantak’s license had been suspended 21 times. He was arraigned in the town of Oneonta court & was released on $250 cash bail and is due back in court on July 19th.
State Police arrested 33 year old Angelica Rivera of Rochester for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after an officer checked on her vehicle which was disabled on State Highway 10 in the town of Walton. Rivera had an active warrant in Monroe County and she was detained, Troopers also found 1.8 grams of cocaine in Rivera’s possession.
Bassett Healthcare Network launched a program in 2016 aimed at making evidence-based addiction treatment more readily accessible to people living in Central New York by offering medication-assisted treatment in the primary care setting. The program earned Bassett the “Healthcare Association of New York State’s” 2018 Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety. The network now has 27 primary care practitioners who have obtained Drug Addiction Treatment waivers to be able to prescribe medication for treatment of opioid addiction.

Mills has served as Delaware County Sheriff for almost 19 years & has served in Law enforcement for over 50 years. Undersheriff Craig DuMond will officially become Acting Sheriff until Mills vacancy is filled by appointment or by election in November.

Hughes & Nicholas Hughes were indicted following the attack on an individual on Silver Street in Norwich, the victim suffered face & skull fractures & brain bleeds, the 3 were remanded back to the Chenango county jail without bail pending future court action.

The federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and will be used to support child care services for low-income families in the Southern Tier Region. Head Start provides comprehensive child development programs for low-income children at ages 3 & 4, as well as supports and services for their families.

The milestone is due in part to a major technology upgrade in January 2016 that doubled the number of measurement points mapped to each driver's photograph, which has resulted in more than 4,000 arrests and more than 16,000 individuals facing administrative action.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell, State Police & Johnson City Police announced a major weapons bust in Broome County. 65-year-old Ramadan Abdullah has been charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon & Criminal possession of stolen property. Abdullah was arrested by Johnson City police on May 31 for shoplifting ammunition from Gander Mountain, a search warrant was executed on Abdullah's storage unit in the town of Union, where police seized 4 loaded handguns, 8 assault weapons, 64 high-capacity ammunition feeding devices, a loaded shotgun, 2 rifles & Thousands of rounds of ammunition. Search warrants were also executed at additional properties, resulting in the seizure of numerous rounds of .38 caliber ammunition, High-capacity ammunition feeding devices and ammunition & another loaded firearm. Abdullah was sent to the Broome County Jail pending arraignment.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies and the Andes Fire Department and Emergency Squad responded at about 1:30 this morning to a 1-car accident on County Highway 1 in the Town of Andes involving an off-duty corrections officer employed by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. 39-year-old Nathan Weaver of Andes fell asleep while driving & left the roadway and colliding with a utility pole and a gas pump at the Tremperskill Country Store before the vehicle overturned on its side. Deputies determined that Weaver was intoxicated, he was charged with DWI, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration in excess of 0.08% and Failure to Keep Right. Weaver faces court action; Sheriff Tom Mills said that Weaver has been suspended without pay pending disciplinary actions.
New York Correctional system workers who have died in the line of duty are being honored. 43 state prison system employees have died on the job since 1861, are being remembered today at a ceremony in Albany, also 5 employees are being honored for outstanding service at the Albany Training academy. Also, the agency's Canine Unit is being recognized today, for detecting contraband being smuggled into prisons.
The State Legislature is considering new rules for the solitary confinement of prison inmates. A proposed bill in both houses would restrict confinement to no more that 15 consecutive days, unless the inmate is sent to a special residential rehabilitation unit. The bill would also prohibit solitary confinement for the young, elderly & pregnant prisoners. Currently, about 4000 prisoners are being held in solitary confinement in state correctional facilities.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies announced that former New York Met great Darryl Strawberry would be at NYSEG Stadium on July 2nd. The team announced that they will have a special Meet and Greet Picnic that guarantees fans a photo, an autographed item, and a raffle ticket to win a Strawberry event worn jersey. State Senator Jim Seward announced senate passage of a package of bills to try to decrease heroin deaths and put drug dealers behind bars for selling opioids and synthetic drugs:

The package of bills would build upon existing laws by focusing on enforcement to hold drug dealers more accountable, improve regulation of synthetic opioids, and improve the state's treatment programs to help assist individuals with recovery, among other measures. The bills were sent to the Assembly for consideration.
Governor Cuomo today announced that representatives from Audi of America performed New York State’s first series of autonomous vehicle demonstrations throughout the day today in the Capital Region. A driver manually operated the vehicle from State Street to I-90 where Audi Highway Pilot technology was then initiated, enabling automated driving for approximately 6.1 miles before a safe return to the Empire State Plaza. Two trained engineers were present in the vehicle at all times to monitor the system and ensure safety.
Newman Development Group, LLC has broken ground on a 170,000-square-foot, mixed-use development project in downtown Binghamton. The multi-million dollar project will include commercial and retail space and rental housing options at the site, located at 50 Front Street. To make way for the project, the developer demolished the former Sheraton Hotel, which had had been sitting vacant on the site.

Binghamton Police arrested 34-year-old Nelson Romero of Binghamton for 2nd degree murder in connection with the death of 44 year Walter Slater of Binghamton. Slater’s body was found in the backyard at 2014 Oak Street in Binghamton last Thursday morning, several blocks from his home. Romero was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County Jail.
Empire State Development Corporation could not verify that many of the companies participating in the Excelsior Jobs Program met their obligations or even justify giving the businesses tax breaks in the first place, according to an audit by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Auditors found a range of problems from lowering job creation goals after companies did not meet expectations to not verifying if jobs were full-time or part-time. ESD also could not produce evidence that several companies actually created jobs and did not simply shift jobs. ESD officials disagreed with the audit’s findings. Their full response is contained in the audit.

The State DOT will hold a public open house meeting on Tuesday, July 12 regarding plans to replace the bridge carrying State Route 12 over Bowman Creek and a proposed deck replacement for the bridge carrying State Route 12 over Fly Meadow Creek in the town of Oxford. The open house will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Oxford High School, 50 South Washington Avenue in the village of Oxford.

Customers only need to show a New York State-issued photo ID or have a Motor Vehicle Representative look up their image in DMV’s database, Transactions are then processed through a touch-screen device.
