The Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call for a burglary in progress on Morgan Hill Road in the Town of Afton. The caller reported that when he entered his building and unknown individuals fled the scene out the rear door of the building. The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team & Deputies patrolled the wooded area behind the house, hours later, they arrested 37 year old Jessica Palmatier of Bainbridge, for Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, 3rd degree burglary, and she was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. State police assisted, they arrested the 2nd suspect, 39 year old Jeb Davis of Sidney, and he was charged with 3rd degree burglary & was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility with no bail.
The tri town coalition on substance abuse prevents has 2 events this week. Tonight at the Sidney High School “Hiding the High” will be presented in an “Adults” only session, beginning at 7:00 PM. The next regular Monthly meeting of the coalition will be held Thursday night at 6:00 PM at the Sidney High School featuring Dr. Samantha Cole, regarding the unique substance abuse problems locally.
Those planning on participating in Operation Merry Christmas have only a few more days to call & sign up. Sign-Ups will continue through October 31st, at 643-6334 or 563-8119, the giveaway will be held in Mid-December in Bainbridge.
The Otsego County Sheriff's department, the Susquehanna Animal Shelter & Southern New York Pig Rescue in Hornell teamed up Monday to remove 4 pigs that were malnourished, from a property on Fisk Road in the town of Morris. Fundraising efforts were underway to have the pigs spayed or neutered by the Cornell University Veterinary program, the name of the owner of the pigs has not been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.
Cornell Cooperative Extension & Chobani have teamed up for a series of informational workshops regarding the financial aspects affecting the Dairy Industry. A workshop will be held at the Quality Inn of Oneonta on Wednesday October 31st, & on Thursday November 1st at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Norwich. Those interested in attending the workshops can register at 315-866-7920.
Governor Cuomo & Republican Candidate Marcus Molinaro held a televised debate last night, carried on CBS Affiliates around the state. The debate only featured the 2 major party candidates & did not include Libertarian Larry Sharpe, Green Candidate Howie Hawkins and independent ex-Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner.
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, will hold a news conference this morning in Binghamton to outline his criminal justice reform agenda, in front of the State Office building at 44 Hawley Street. Hawkins will appear at 10:30 AM. He is also scheduled to speak at SUNY Binghamton at 6:30 PM.
Officials from Artspace will be in Oneonta today & tomorrow to listen to the needs of the artist community and to look for creative ways to support the arts and the City. Various discussions will be held at the Foothills Performing Arts Center starting at 1:00pm today, capped off with the public meeting at 7:00 PM. 2 more meetings are scheduled for Thursday morning, also at Foothills.

State Police arrested 41 year old John Fox of Greene for Criminal Possession of a Firearm and several counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Harassment & Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. The arrest stems from a domestic dispute reported on Monday, where Fox is accused of possessing firearms that were not registered to him. Fox was arraigned in the town of Greene Court he was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond penindg court action today.
The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce & the County Solid Waste Facility on State Highway 10 in Walton, have teamed up for a public open house at the facility on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. There will be guided tours of the compost facility and recycling center where people can see how solid waste is handled through the sustainable practices of composting, recycling and resource recovery. Otsego County's 21st Annual Household Hazardous Waste Days will be held on September 7th and 8th. Otsego County Residents can bring household hazardous waste, such as enamel paints, pesticides, antifreeze, batteries and more FREE of CHARGE for proper disposal. Last year 550 cars from an estimated 600 households brought various hazardous materials for disposal. NO REGISTRATION FOR HOUSEHOLD COLLECTION. Household collections will be held on Friday, September 7th at the Unadilla Town Barn from 8:00AM to 11:00 AM, and Saturday, September 8th at the Meadows Office Complex in Cooperstown from 8:00AM to 1:00PM.

State Police responded to a train derailment parallel to State Route 17 in Deposit early Thursday morning. The train was traveling in a westbound direction from New Jersey to Binghamton, heavy rainfall and flooding caused a small section of the NY Southern Railroad line to erode at a culvert overpass making the tracks impassible. The train was hauling 59 cars and 4 locomotives, 16 of them derailed, 2 of the locomotives were leaking diesel fuel into the west branch Delaware River tributary. All of the cargo remained intact and there was no danger to the public. As a precaution, four trailers and one single family residence were evacuated but the residents were told they could return. There were no injuries & Cleanup efforts continue.
State Police were dispatched to a one fatal accident on Old Route 17 in the town of Windsor. A 43 year old male resident from Windsor was operating a 2005 Dodge Caravan when he went off the roadway for an unknown reason. His vehicle struck several mailboxes, went through a lawn and over a creek landing in a wooded area. Neighbors heard the crash at approximately 10:30 pm Wednesday Night, but were not able to see what occurred, another resident contacted 911 Wednesday morning when they spotted the vehicle. When troopers arrived, the male was obviously deceased. The investigation continues.
Governor Cuomo today announced that $1.5 million is available for eligible school districts to support the growth of Farm-to-School programs across the State ahead of the upcoming school year. The program helps Kindergarten through Grade 12 schools to increase the volume and variety of locally grown and produced food on school menus, it also assists the agricultural economy, providing additional business to New York's farmers. Grant funding of up to $100,000 per project will be awarded for Employing a local or regional farm to school coordinator; Training programs for food service staff; & money to expand kitchens & storage for farm products in the schools.
The City of Oneonta with its contractor, Cobleskill Stone, will be paving streets today & Saturday. The work will be performed between 7:00 AM & 5:00 PM on Oak Street, Spring Street, Grove Street (from Cliff Street to Spring Street) & Grove Street from Main Street to Academy Street. State Police released more details on the April 11th crash that killed Whitesboro Police Officer Kevin Crossley. Troopers reported that an eyewitness and a surveillance video showed Officer Crossley made a U-turn, his patrol vehicle then collided with an SUV driven by Nicole Moshier-Harris. Officer Crossley's vehicle was travelling at 74 miles per hour, and his actions were consistent with pursuing an unidentified violator. The coroner’s report determined that Officer Crossley's death was caused by multiple traumatic injuries & he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Moshier-Harris was issued a traffic ticket for failing to yield the right of way, no additional charges are anticipated.
55 Year Old John Morrissette of Otego was arrested by the Otsego County Sheriff's department for several charges; including felony DWI aggravated operating a motor vehicle with 0.18 percent BAC, following a traffic stop on Chestnut Street in Oneonta Sunday. Morrissette faces action in Town of Oneonta court on May 8th
Delaware County Fair officials announced that ALL GRANDSTAND Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 9:00 am. Tickets are available at delawarecountyfair.org, by phone at 1-800-585-3737 or at Hodges Sales and Service 53 Liberty Street in Walton.
Law enforcement agencies across the state participated in the Operation Safe Stop Day today. Police officers will be on board school buses and monitoring bus routes to ensure safe driving. An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day. Last year, more than 1000 tickets were issued for people passing a stopped school bus.
Governor Cuomo launched Round 8 of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, kicking off the 2018 competition for more than $750 million in state economic development resources. The Consolidated Funding Application will open to applicants on May 1, enabling businesses, municipalities, not-for-profits and the public to begin applying for Projects. Round 8 will include up to $150 million in capital grants and up to $75 million in Excelsior Tax Credits for projects and activities identified by the Councils as regional priorities.
NYSEG President & CEO Carl Taylor announced a $400,000 economic development grant for Binghamton University this afternoon. The latest award brings the total up to $1.2 million in funding which NYSEG has granted to the university, to help support 3 projects under the company’s economic development electric infrastructure programs. The goal is to help offset electric-related infrastructure improvements as well as to research, develop and promote energy-efficient systems.
Sidney will hold it's annual Arbor Day Celebration tomorrow at the Walking Trail Pavilion in keith Clark park, beginning at 10:00 am. A tree dedication planting will be part of the activities. A limited number of young sapling trees will be distributed.

The company will construct an approximate 245,000 square-foot addition to its recently opened distribution center in Broome County Corporate Park in Conklin. The expansion will lead to the creation of additional full-time jobs, totaling more than 500 new, full-time jobs at the site over the next 5 years.

52 year old Michael Slack of Otego has been charged with making a terroristic threat, Menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, & Harassment, following the report of a domestic dispute Tuesday. Slack is accused of making terroristic threats about government officials, & threatening a victim with a rifle; he was arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County jail on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
The City of Oneonta Department of Public Service announced this year’s schedule for curbside residential brush and yard waste pick-up. Those living in wards 1-4 will be have their yard waste picked up on Monday April 16th, those in wards 5-8 will be picked up the following Monday, April 23rd. State Police released more details about the death of Whitesboro Police Officer Kevin Crossley, who was killed Wednesday night when his patrol car collided with a pickup truck driven by 26-year old Nicole Moshier-Harris of Whitesboro. Investigators reported that there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Officer Crossley was a full-time member of the Whitesboro Police Department for 7 years, he was 34 years old.

Mazepa was found to be in possession of an assault rifle, crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, marihuana, ammunition and drug paraphernalia. Mazepa was charged with Criminal Possession Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Tampering with physical evidence, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia & Resisting Arrest, he was arraigned and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Joshua Backus of Greene was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of a Stimulant, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 4 counts of Menacing and Harassment and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Troopers were called to a residence in the Town of Oxford to investigate a domestic dispute; Backus pushed 2 subjects and threatened them with a hammer, pointed a gun at them and attempted to hit them with his vehicle. Troopers observed Backus drive by the residence, he was arrested, arraigned and was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond pending Grand Jury action on April 18th.
Erin Collier of Cooperstown, who is a candidate for Congress in New York’s 19th district, announced today that she has qualified to be on the ballot for the Democratic Primary on June 26th. Collier’s campaign filed over 2,700 signatures in support of her candidacy with the State Board of Elections, more than double the required number of signatures.
The SUNY Oneonta Fights Cancer Club will hold the OH Fight Walk this evening from 6:00 pm until midnight at the Alumni Field House. Participants will walk around the Field House to raise awareness of and money for local families battling cancer. Registrations are available at suny.oneonta.edu.

Binghamton police are investigating the shooting of 40 year old Grady Hunter on Sunday, Hunter was hospitalized with life threatening injuries, Police reported that Hunter was sitting in his car outside a Deli at 121 Susquehanna Street at around 12:00 Noon Sunday. A suspect has been taken into custody today, anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 772-7080.
5 people died & 1 was critically injured in a house fire on State Route 145 in East Durham early Monday Morning. Nicholas and Mary Mammano, & their 3 grandchildren died, John Mammano was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and Autopsies have been ordered to determine the cause of death.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer visited Awestruck Ciders in Sidney this afternoon; he is calling on the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Trade bureau to reverse a provision that would get in the way of the growth of Awestruck & Other Cideries.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York entered a consent decree of permanent injunction against Vulto Creamery or Walton. The defendants cannot prepare, process, manufacture, pack and/or hold FDA-regulated food products until they can ensure that Listeria is not present in their facility and their food. Vulto Creameries products were linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria in their cheese products, 2 people died & 8 were hospitalized after consuming the products contaminated by Listeria.
Governor Cuomo announced more than 60 new farms & businesses have received research permits under the State's Industrial Hemp Agricultural Research Pilot program, many of those are located in the Southern Tier. The State has invested more than $4.6 billion in the region since 2012 to lay for groundwork for the plan to expand Hemp production.
The Copes Corners Park Spring Fest committee for the Town of Butternuts is soliciting craft, artist, product, and general vendors for its 4th annual Spring Fest. The event will take place May 5 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM; the cost for a 12-foot by 12-foot space is $20. Limited space will also be available under a tent provided by Morris Tent Rentals. Molinaro said in January that he wouldn't run, but he said that "outpouring" from supporters made him change his plans, he will face State Senator John DeFrancisco for the Republican party Nomination in the primary later this year.
