24 year old Thomas Murray of Binghamton was arraigned in a federal court room on an indictment charging him with Distribution of Child Pornography and Possession of Child Pornography. Murray was arrested following an investigation by the FBI & State Police, he was returned to state custody where he is being held on similar state charges. Murray allegedly distributed child pornography on a web-based messaging facility on 2 separate occasions & he possessed child pornography on 2 devices, which was uncovered following a search warrant conducted on Murray’s residence in 2025. Murray faces a mandatory minimum term of 5 years in federal prison on the distribution charges, a maximum term of 20 years in federal prison for the distribution and possession offenses, a fine of up to $250,000, and a mandatory term of supervised release of between 5 years and life. Murray would also be required to register as a sex offender if convicted.

State Police responded Tuesday Night to a crash involving an SUV and a motorcycle at State Highway 28 and County Highway 48 in the town of Oneonta. An investigation determined that 76 year old Patricia Howard of Sidney, was operating an SUV on County Highway 48 and began making a left turn onto State Highway 28 when she failed to observe a Motorcycle driven by 57 year old Gabriel Mizrahi of Syosset, he was transported to A.O Fox Hospital & was airlifted to a trauma center but succumbed to his injuries. The investigation is on-going.
State Police responded to a motorcycle crash with an injury on State Highway 7 in the town of Worcester Tuesday. 27 year old Jacob Sprague of Otego was traveling on Route 7 in the town of Worcester when he exited the roadway and struck a utility pole. Sprague was assisted by civilians in the area until EMS arrived. Sprague was transported by Lifenet to Albany Medical Center for further treatment. The investigation is on-going.
State Police Superintendent Steven James announced the Annual Trooper Awards, for bravery & service to New Yorkers. The Brummer Award, which is the Highest Award for Heroism, went to Trooper Thomas Stiehler of Troop G, who on July 4th 2025, responded to a shooting involving a teenage male and a structure fire one block from the Plaza, he entered the burning building to ensure all occupants had evacuated. He then entered the adjoining smoke filled residence, and removed a disabled woman, carrying her down several flights of stairs to safety. Locally, Trooper Timothy Murray at Troop C, who also volunteers as a firefighter and EMT with the Delhi Fire Department, responded to a fatal motor vehicle accident and provided life-saving care to a severely injured fellow trooper. State Police participated in the 1st National Top Trooper Competition in Texas, Sergeant Nicholas Trentanelli and Trooper Lindsey Rumenapp of Troop C, were both selected to participate following a statewide tryout process.
The collaboration between the Tri County Senior Center & The Delaware Valley Humane Society has resulted in a cookbook for sale, to raise money for the Shelter, Carol Allen of Tri County Senior Center & Erin Insinga of the Humane Society told WCDO News how the plan started:

The Broome County Department of Public Works announced that a culvert replacement will be taking place along Old Route 17 in the Town of Sanford starting next week, the road will be closed from May 11th through August 14th, motorists will need to seek alternative routes, Detour routes will be posted for motorists to follow.
The Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center is now open and it will be one of only 12 such centers in New York State, they provide on-site care for people experiencing mental health or substance use crises, offering stabilization services for up to 24 hours. The center is for residents in the Mohawk Valley area counties, including Otsego County.
A new poll from Sienna Research Institute shows that Governor Hochul's lead over Nassau County Republican Bruce Blakeman increased by another 3%, in the race for New York Governor. Hochul had 49% of prospective voters, while Blakeman had 33%.

State Police are participating in a national crackdown on distracted driving as part of April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The enforcement effort, called Operation Hang Up, will include increased patrols and checkpoints targeting drivers using electronic devices while behind the wheel, today through next Monday April 14th. Troopers will be using both marked & unmarked vehicles throughout the enforcement detail.
The Future For Oneonta Foundation is planning a multi-use facility to be located on Dietz Street, Foundation Chairman Al Cleinman explains:

Cleinman said that the project is expected to cost about 1.5 Million dollars to complete, they are seeking grants and donations to make the project a reality, the opening could be as soon as 2026.
State Attorney General Letitia James today announced that her office secured a multi state settlement with pharmaceutical company Mylan that will deliver up to $335 million nationwide to help combat the opioid crisis. Mylan manufactured and sold a variety of opioids since 2005, including generic fentanyl patches, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and others, & they deceptively promoted its products as less prone to abuse, but were more vulnerable to abuse.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Gary Garbera of Laurens for 3 counts of Attempted Criminal Contempt, following an investigation in to a report of an inmate at the Otsego County Correctional Facility violating a valid order of protection, he attempted to contact the protected party of the order 3 times by phone, he was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court.

33 year old Joseph Martino of Windsor is facing multiple charges after fleeing police in a stolen vehicle through Binghamton, Johnson City, Windsor and into Pennsylvania. On March 30, Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol observed a Mazda in Johnson City that had been reported stolen from Binghamton, a traffic stop was attempted and Martino failed to comply. Pennsylvania State Police successfully deployed tire deflation devices, Martino kept going, and he jumped out & attempted to flee on foot, a Broome County Deputy pursued and deployed a taser, & he was taken into custody. Martino was charged with Possession of Stolen Property in Pennsylvania, the local charges were Criminal Mischief, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer and over 20 Vehicle & Traffic Violations.
A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Masonville, the 1st laboratory confirmed positive case of rabies in Delaware County in 2025. The rabid raccoon exposed 2 dogs, there were no human exposures. One dog was Up to date on its rabies vaccinations and received a booster, the 2nd dog was not up to date, it received a booster and will begin a 6-month quarantine, for more information call 607-832-5200 or delawarecountypublichealth.com

During the execution of a search warrant Friday in Johnson City, Murray was found to be in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation, illegal illicit substances and materials used for manufacturing methamphetamine. Murray has been charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child, Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, Murray was processed and turned over to the Broome County Jail for Arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff's Office responded Thursday to an accident involving 3 motorcycles on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood, 2 victims were taken to Wilson Hospital for serious injuries, 1 person was pronounced deceased at the scene, who was identified as 23 year old Maxwell Kintner of Vestal. The preliminary investigation showed that speeding may have been a factor, the investigation is ongoing.
James Wales was denied parole last week, he is serving a sentence of 33 years to life for the 1984 murder of 12-year-old Cheri Lindsey, this was the 6th denied parole following strong opposition from the community. Lindsey was killed in March of 1984, while collecting payments on her newspaper delivery route. She was murdered in Wales’ home on Sturges Street in Binghamton, Wales will be eligible to apply for parole supervision again in 2 years

Lambrecht Auction in Sidney held their 2nd Annual Sidney EMS Charity event Saturday at their Sidney Location on Delaware Avenue. Jared Lambrecht told WCDO News this afternoon that they raised $50,800 for the Sidney Emergency Squad, that is in need of a new fully loaded ambulance, which costs about $250,000. Last year they raised $18,000 in their 1st charity auction effort for the Emergency squad.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Michael VanDerWeert of Guilford & 47 year old Dawn Cavanaugh of North Carolina, for Burglary, Petty Larceny, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy. Deputies responded to a burglary complaint at a business in the Town of Norwich, where someone broke into the building and stole multiple items. The vehicle used in the burglary was spotted at a business in the Village of Oxford, VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were arrested and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office where they were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Saturday to an ATV crash near Fuller Hollow Road in the Town of Hamden. Prior to Deputies’ arrival, Delaware County 911 reported that a victim had been privately transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in the Village of Walton with a second victim still on scene. Deputies located the 2nd victim, an 11-year-old male, at a residence, who was transported to Albany Medical Center by Life Net for non-life-threatening injuries. The 1st Victim was a 13-year-old female who was pronounced deceased at the Delaware Valley Hospital, due to injuries sustained from the crash.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 2.3% in October according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Local collections totaled $1.84 billion for the month, up $41 million from the previous October, County and city collections outside of New York City increased by only .4%, 36 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

The FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to assist in combating the Catskills Wildfires, The Grant Declaration will allow for funding to help cover costs associated with responding to the Jennings Creek/Sterling State Park wildfire and protecting those in its path. Statewide there were 13 wildfires reported Sunday, encompassing more than 5,000 acres, the state wide burn ban remains in effect.
State Police at Troop C in Sidney announced that 24 people were charged with DWI, from the period of November 1st through November 12th. State Police will continue with DWI patrols, with increased efforts during the upcoming Thanksgiving & Christmas Holiday seasons.
Firefighters from Sidney Center & surrounding departments responded to the report of a structure fire late Sunday morning at 1129 Vandervoort Hill Road. The fire was contained to the basement and was quickly extinguished, no injuries were reported.
U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will join elected officials and educators to encourage Binghamton University students to apply to the DoD Cyber Service Academy scholarship program, which provides full college tuition in return for public service in the Department of Defense or the Intelligence Community. Lambrecht Auction in Sidney held their 2nd Annual Sidney EMS Charity event Saturday at their Sidney Location on Delaware Avenue. Jared Lambrecht told WCDO News this afternoon that they raised $50,800 for the Sidney Emergency Squad, that is in need of a new fully loaded ambulance, which costs about $250,000. Last year they raised $18,000 in their 1st charity auction effort for the Emergency squad.
Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Michael VanDerWeert of Guilford & 47 year old Dawn Cavanaugh of North Carolina, for Burglary, Petty Larceny, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy. Deputies responded to a burglary complaint at a business in the Town of Norwich, where someone broke into the building and stole multiple items. The vehicle used in the burglary was spotted at a business in the Village of Oxford, VanDerWeert and Cavanaugh were arrested and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office where they were released on appearance tickets to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Saturday to an ATV crash near Fuller Hollow Road in the Town of Hamden. Prior to Deputies’ arrival, Delaware County 911 reported that a victim had been privately transported to Delaware Valley Hospital in the Village of Walton with a second victim still on scene. Deputies located the 2nd victim, an 11-year-old male, at a residence, who was transported to Albany Medical Center by Life Net for non-life-threatening injuries. The 1st Victim was a 13-year-old female who was pronounced deceased at the Delaware Valley Hospital, due to injuries sustained from the crash.
Local sales tax collections in New York state increased by 2.3% in October according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Local collections totaled $1.84 billion for the month, up $41 million from the previous October, County and city collections outside of New York City increased by only .4%, 36 of 57 counties experienced year-over-year increases.

71 year old Michael Murray of Sidney, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of possession of child pornography in U.S. District Court last week. Murray admitted that in October 2021, he possessed images and videos of child pornography on two cell phones and possessed images and videos of child pornography in two email accounts he controlled. Murray had a previous conviction in New York related to the production, possession and distribution of child pornography at the time of these federal offenses. Sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2024, in Federal Court in Albany, he could face a term of 144 months in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years to life, he will have to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

When the officer attempted to take the defendant into custody, he then resisted arrest, he was then found to be in possession of 2 different controlled substances. McIntyre was charged with Criminal Possession of a Control Substance, 2 Counts Resisting Arrest & Trespassing & was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Milford Court on a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that a juvenile is facing 3rd degree Assault and Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, following an incident which occurred at the DCMO BOCES in the Town of Masonville. On September 7th, Deputies responded to the BOCES campus, a physical altercation had occurred where the victim was physically injured, and pressure had been applied to the victim’s throat. Deputies arrested and charged the Unadilla juvenile, The juvenile and the parents were issued juvenile appearance tickets and were directed to report to the Delaware County Probation Department at a later date to answer the charges.

The Broome County Sheriff's office arrested 29 year old Dustin Smith of Endicott, after methamphetamine and fentanyl were found during the intake process at the Broome County Correctional Facility. Smith was brought to Central Arraignment at the Broome County Correctional Facility on Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance charges, a routine search uncovered 3 bags containing Methamphetamine & fentanyl. Smith was charged with 2 Counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, & 3 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, he was arraigned in the Town of Dickinson Court & he remains at the Broome County Correctional Facility.
State Police responded to an incident involving a motorcycle and a riding lawnmower at Hawleyton Road, in the town of Binghamton. 74 year old Danny Shepard of Binghamton was operating a riding lawnmower in the area of the roadway and front yard of his residence, 28 year old Justin Tarbox of Binghamton, was operating a motorcycle on Hawleyton Road, they collided & Shepard was pronounced dead at the scene. Tarbox was transported to Wilson Hospital, The incident remains under investigation.
70 year old Rudolph Pacheco of Staten Island was arraigned on a sealed indictment in Delaware County Court on September 15. The Delaware County Grand Jury handed up a 9 Count Indictment accusing him of Vehicular Manslaughter, Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Assault, Aggravated DWI, Reckless Driving, and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash that resulted in death. Pacheco is accused of operating a motor vehicle on August 2, in the Town of Middletown, with a BAC greater than .18, he struck 2 elderly pedestrians, Pacheco fled the scene until he was stopped 12 miles away. One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second one was transported to the Emergency Room to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries. Pacheco was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail, $250,000.00 secured bond, and $500,000.00 partially secured bond, a conference is scheduled for October 10, at 1:00 P.M.

In about 2 weeks, the attorney for the Reporter Newspaper based in Delhi, owned by Randy & Kimberly Shepard, may file a lawsuit against Delaware County for their decision to remove the county designation from the Reporter to the Hancock Herald, solely because County Officials did not like the reporting by Lillian Browne on County Activities. Attorney Heather Murray explains the possible lawsuit argument:

State Police have arrested 39 year old Kysha Radcliff of Dryden, for 1st degree Kidnapping, in connection with the kidnapping & murder case of Thomas Rath of Ithaca. Rath disappeared from a homeless encampment earlier this year, he remains were found last month & so far the investigation has resulted in 11 arrests. State Police said that the investigation continues.
State Police responded to a reported stabbing on a Trailways Transportation Bus, traveling from New York City to Binghamton. The bus was on State Highway 17 in the town of Deposit when the incident was reported and indicated that a female had been stabbed numerous times. State Police said that 32 year old Dominique Holloman of New York City fled when the bus stopped, he was located & was charged with 2nd degree Assault he was transported to the Delaware County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The injured female had been traveling with Holloman, she was treated at Wilson Hospital for a non-life threatening injury.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43-year-old Dennis Ryder of Branford, Connecticut for driving with a suspended New York State Driver’s license. On Friday afternoon, Deputies observed a vehicle speeding on State Highway 97 in the Village of Hancock, they conducted a traffic stop, a check of Ryder’s driver’s license revealed that his driving privileges were suspended. Ryder was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle & Speeding, among other charges, Ryder will appear in the Village of Hancock Court at a later date to answer the charges.

2 people were hospitalized after a motorcycle & pickup truck accident on Atwell Hill Road in the Town of Windsor. Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded on Thursday at approximately 7:00 pm, 26 year old Cody Beavers of Windsor was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed and failed to keep right around a curve, he struck a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Beavers and his passenger, 23 year old Megan Monteforte of Hallstead, Pennsylvania were ejected from the motorcycle, both were wearing helmets but sustained serious injuries & were taken to UHS Wilson Medical Hospital & were later transferred to a Syracuse Hospital by Life Net. Beavers was found to have been driving an unregistered and uninsured motorcycle without a license and was issued multiple Uniform Traffic Tickets.
Oneonta Police Department responded Thursday to the report of several loud popping sounds at the Town House Inn at 318 Main Street. Officers discovered that a firearm had been discharged in the parking lot, no firearms were found at the scene. The Investigation indicates that no individuals were injured and unoccupied vehicles had been struck by the projectiles. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Oneonta Police Department at (607) 432-1111.
Authorities recovered the body of 61 year old Dr. Chandra Prakash Joshi in Middlefield along the Natty Bumppo’s Cave trail, Investigators beleive that Dr. Joshi fell 3 days prior off of a cliff area and died from his injuries, he was a senior physicist at Bassett Cancer Institute. The sheriff’s office dispatched patrols in cooperation with Cooperstown Village Police and state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers, after a co-workers reported that the Doctor had failed to show up for work, and has planned to go hiking, his car had been in the parking lot, the cause of death was accidental.

Oneonta Police & Fire department officials will hold a press conference today, regarding the fatal fire at 5 Walling Avenue Saturday morning that took the life of former Oneonta Firefighter John Heller, while he was helping 5 people escape out of the building. Governor Cuomo granted clemency to 29 individuals who have demonstrated substantial evidence of rehabilitation and have avoided additional crime activities. The pardons were in recognition of each individuals’ efforts after serving their terms and to remove the barriers that their criminal records present to their immigration status, which affected 22 of the pardoned individuals, some who were facing possible deportation. The Governor said that in each case, a pardon will make immigration-related relief possible, if not automatic.
Willow Run in Kirkwood announced that they will be expanding & adding staff this spring. The company announced that they received a 1.2 million dollar grant for their expansion, which was awarded as part of the regional economic development awards program. The expansion should lead to 40 more jobs; they currently employ about 450 people at their current site.
Otsego County has funding for a Microenterprise Program to assist small businesses with 5 or fewer employees. The application deadline is January 31st; more information is available through Thomas Development at 753-1433.
The Sidney Dollars for Scholars program, for Graduating Sidney High School Seniors, has had a change in the amount of time the seniors have to participate. Program Spokesperson Tracy Young explains:

State Police CNET and Vestal Police stopped a vehicle on Murray Street in Binghamton for a Traffic violation. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of approximately 2 pounds of marijuana, Police executed a search warrant at 64 Oak Street in Binghamton, they seized 103 pounds of marihuana, with a street value of $412,000; plus 60 boxes of concentrated cannabis vapor cartridges; 224 canisters of medical grade flavored marihuana; plus cocaine; $37,000 cash; drug paraphernalia and packaging. Police arrested 22-year-old Naami Islam and 21-year-old Melissa Pincus, both of Binghamton for Criminal Possession of Marihuana & Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance. Both were arraigned in the City of Binghamton Court, they were remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.
A stray cat in the town of Kortright has tested positive for the rabies virus. There were no human exposures to the cat. An unvaccinated cat was exposed to the rabies virus by the rabid cat; the cat will be humanely euthanized. This is the third animal that has tested positive for rabies in Delaware County in 2018.

Calling hours will be 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street in Oneonta. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Friday at the Foothills Performing Arts Center. His life will be celebrated at the East Meredith Fire Department, immediately following the funeral service.

About 130 customers were without power this morning, due to high winds from yesterday's weather. NYSEG reported outages across Otsego & Chenango Counties; crews are working to restore power as fast as possible.
The Oneonta Common Council Meeting has been moved to tonight, as City Hall was closed New Year’s Day. The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the 2nd floor Common Council Chambers.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual State of The State Breakfast today at the SUNY Oneonta Otsego Grille in the Morris Conference Center. The event will begin at 8:30; State Senator Jim Seward & Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig will be among the guest speakers.
