Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 69 year old Robert Walker of Davenport for criminal impersonation unauthorized use of emergency lights, unauthorized lights, failure to keep right, speed unreasonable and prudent and following too closely & official misconduct. Walker is accused of using a Volunteer Fire Department emergency blue light on his personal vehicle to conducted a traffic stop on another vehicle in the Town of Davenport without official authority to do so. Walker was issued appearance tickets for Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
During National School Bus Safety Week, the State DMV and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee are reminding motorists to stop and wait whenever they encounter a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and “stop” sign extended. Drivers who pass a stopped school bus illegally could be ticketed and face fines and other penalties. Motorists should also watch for students as they walk or bike to school and always follow the posted speed limits. Drivers convicted of passing a stopped school bus face a fine of $250 to $400, five points on their driver license, and up to 30 days jail time for a first violation. Three violations in three years can result in a maximum fine of $1,000, five points, a six-month license revocation, registration revocation, and up to six months jail time.
The Oneonta Department of Public Service will be flushing water mains in the low service area starting 9:00 AM to 4:00 pm Friday. Flushing is expected to go into the better part of next week, in the Chestnut Street Area & Winnie Hill Road neighborhood. The State DOT is looking to hire about 470 permanent and seasonal employees shortly. Officials announced today that applications are now available; they usually begin hiring in September of each year, with the goal of having them ready to plow snow when winter begins. Candidates must Be at least 18 years old, Pass a physical and drug test, Have a valid, clean Class A or B commercial driver license & Be certified to operate DOT heavy dump trucks within 2 weeks after the start of DOT employment. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a 1 car property damage automobile accident in the Town of Harpersfield. 62 year old Ralph Leonard of Hobart is accused of leaving the scene before officers arrived, Deputies traveled to Leonard’s residence, where a marijuana growing operation was observed. Leonard was charged with Criminal possession of marijuana, Unlawfully Growing Cannabis, f Criminal possession of a controlled substance, Obstructing governmental administration & Aggravated unlicensed operation, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $4,000 cash bail or $8,000 bond.

Otsego County Sheriff's Department arrested 21 year old Jared Talbot of Oneonta after an animal cruelty investigation involving pigs in the Town of Laurens. Talbot is accused of overriding torturing or injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance in violation of the NYS Agriculture and Markets Law. Talbot will appear in the Town of Laurens Court on a later date.
Former New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos was sentenced on Wednesday to four years and three months in prison on federal corruption charges, including soliciting bribes and defrauding the public. Prosecutors accused the elder Skelos of using his position to pressure three companies to provide his son with consulting work, a “no-show” job and a $20,000 payment.
The State Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction issued a new report describing steps currently being taken to address the state's opioid crisis. The report includes 11 recommendations, Including Increasing resources to support the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals trained to treat substance use disorder; Upgrade the I-STOP Program to improve interstate monitoring of potential over-prescribing of opioids, Reduce the cost of naloxone to treat overdoses, & Explore the further limitation of initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain to 3 days from the current 7days, with certain medical exceptions; more information is available at nysenate.gov/committees/heroin-task-force. 29 year old Corey Robinson was sentenced to 15 years in state prison today in Broome County Court, for the shooting of 46 year old Erika Smith-Cunningham, in Johnson City on Easter Sunday. Robinson had been at a house party at 92 Crocker Avenue in Johnson City; he left after a fight broke out & returned later & fired a shotgun into the building, fatally striking Smith-Cunningham. Robinson fled to Georgia; he was extradited back to New York to face prosecution.
U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $225,000 in federal funding for the Oneonta Municipal Airport. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program. The funding will be used to purchase new snow removal equipment.
The Binghamton Devils have announced their 2018 training camp schedule at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Players have their first on-ice practice at 10:30 AM Tomorrow morning. Training camp will run through Friday, the Devils invite the general public to Open Practice on Thursday; the doors will open at 10:00 AM. The Devils will open up the 2018-19 season at home on Saturday, October 6 at 7:05 p.m. against the Toronto Marlies.
The State Department of Health should continue to improve how it informs the public of potential hazards in public drinking water systems, according to an audit released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. New York has 9,155 public water systems, which serves 95% of all New Yorkers. The audit stated that when water safety violations occurred, the Department did not always take appropriate or timely action to hold water systems accountable for required follow-up, such as notifying the public. Of the 126 water safety violations that auditors sampled, the Offices lacked evidence that system operators
notified the public 46% of the time, 21% were issued late. DiNapoli recommended that they prioritize actions to regulate emerging contaminants with known adverse health effects; and to make sure that safe drinking water is distributed to the public through a robust monitoring program that reports issues to the public in a timely fashion.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Town of Sherburne man for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, and additional vehicle and traffic law violations. Deputies arrested 32 year old Kyle Lafever of Sherburne following a 1 car motor vehicle accident on County Road 32 in the Town of Norwich. Lafever allegedly was involved in 2 separate motor vehicle accidents and leaving the scene of the first accident. In the second motor vehicle accident deputies responded to the scene and administered first aid to Lafever. He was found to be in possession of heroin and a hypodermic syringe. He was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital. Lafever is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Town of Plymouth man for Burglary and Grand Larceny in the Town of Pharsalia. 23 year old Austin Demuth of Plymouth is accused of unlawfully entering the residence of a victim and stealing several items, valued at more than $1,000, in July. Demuth was located hiding in his residence in the Town of Plymouth, he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced their annual small business and Entrepreneurial spirit award recipients. Directive, of Oneonta, is the recipient of the Key Bank, 19th Annual Small Business of the Year Award; The Otsego ReUse Center is the recipient of the Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield Breakthrough Business of the Year. The award winners will be honored at the Chamber’s Small Business Banquet that will be held on Thursday, October 11th at The Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, beginning at 5:45 PM.

Governor Cuomo announced a $62 million investment for the Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, to utilize engineering, education and enforcement campaigns to enhance pedestrian safety across the state. More than $22 million is already being used for the 1st projects on state roads, while $40 million is being invested to enhance pedestrian safety on local roadways. In the Southern Tier; Work will begin soon to make $3.8 million in safety upgrades at 123 locations, 48 sites this year & another 75 sites to be completed in the summer of 2019.
The contract to keep the Veterans Affairs Clinic on State Route 7 in Bainbridge will expire at the end of the year, they see between 75 to 100 Veterans a day, and are scheduled to get a 2nd doctor to serve their, yet the facility may be moved to Oneonta. Ruth Tompkins of Chenango Links said that their group is trying to keep the clinic in Bainbridge:

Tompkins said that Chenango Links is urging area veterans & residents to contact Congresswoman Claudia Tenney or Congressman John Faso to try to get the Bainbridge clinic, with 2 doctors, renewed before the end of the year. Tompkins said that such efforts worked in 2014, when then-Congressman Richard Hanna successfully kept the clinic from moving from Bainbridge.
Oneonta-area non-profit organizations are getting an assist from students in a Hartwick College grant writing class. Students in the “Introduction to Grant Writing” class, partner with a local organization with the goal of developing and submitting a grant proposal on their behalf. This year, 6 students assisted: Girls on the Run, the EDD Memorial Fund, Valleyview Elementary School, the Oneonta Fire Department, and the College’s own Yager Museum of Art & Culture with grant writing assistance. The National Baseball Hall Of Fame announced that the 2018 Inductees Exhibit is open and will remain on display through May 2019. The exhibit is located on the first floor & features a display for Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Chipper Jones, Jack Morris, Jim Thome and Alan Trammell. The exhibit is accompanied by a highlight video for each member of the Class of 2018. The 2018 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at 1:30 PM on July 29 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown and will be shown live on MLB Network. State DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced $4 million in grant funding for generators of excess wholesome food and food scraps to expand their capacity to donate it to organic recycling facilities. An estimated 40% of the food produced in the United States goes uneaten while about 2.5 million New Yorkers go hungry. Seggos said that much of the wasted food is disposed of in solid waste landfills where its decomposition accounts for more than 15% of emissions of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas. A.O. Fox Hospital is offering training for individuals interested in becoming junior volunteers. The training is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm in A.O. Fox Hospital's Education Department.
