Bassett Healthcare Network announced the elimination of around 100 positions, the majority were administrative. Patient care would not be affected by the layoffs, which represent 2% of their total workforce.

Springbrook will receive $5 million from Tom Golisano as part of a $360 million donation to over 80 nonprofit organizations. In 2010, Golisano provided funds to establish the Golisano School, which expanded services for children with autism. In 2012, the organization completed the $22.5 million Coming Home Campaign, opening the Tom Golisano Center for Autism, a state-of-the-art facility offering specialized care and support for people with autism.


23 year old Nalya Jimenez of Sidney pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court Tuesday to 1 count of Welfare Fraud, she was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge. Jimenez admitted to providing false information while applying for SNAP, she failed to report recurring income from several sources - including a full-time position that would have rendered her ineligible to receive the benefits. Jimenez improperly received $5,679 in public benefits, she has agreed to pay the entirety of $5,679 in 30 days of sentence. If she fails to pay, she could face a year in jail.

The City of Oneonta Fire and Police Departments are currently investigating a fire that occurred at 47 Chestnut Street Thursday afternoon. Emergency responders were called to the scene at approximately 1:03 PM, finding smoke showing from a second story window above the Oneonta Theatre. A single fatality has been reported and the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Oneonta Fire and Police Departments were assisted by the West Oneonta, Otego, Franklin, Sidney, Cooperstown, and Worcester Fire Departments; the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The State Department of Labor announced that Unemployment increased .1% in August from July to 4.4% , Locally Chenango County had 3.5% unemployment, Delaware County 4.2% and Otsego County 4.1% in August.


Edmeston Central School District went into lock-down today following a situation that district Officials Stated posed a potential threat to students if they were outside the school building today. Law Enforcement was notified & no one was allowed to enter or leave the school building. Law enforcement investigated & claimed that situation was safe & the lock-down was lifted.


State Police are looking to identify 2 people that are linked to several “smash and grabs” thefts. The suspects have smashed windows and taken valuable items from vehicles in broad daylight at Otsiningo Park, & other Southern Tier Locations, they were spotted in a white BMW, the license plate on that vehicle was found to be stolen from Connecticut. Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police at Troop C at (607)561-7400. State Police also remind residents to never leaving valuables in plain view in a vehicle even if the vehicle is locked.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the Town of Walton that resulted in 2 arrests. The driver of the vehicle was 37 year old Aaron Howard of Walton, who's driving privileges had been revoked, he was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle among other lesser charges. Deputies also arrested the passenger, 36 year old Courtney Condon of Walton, on 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a control substance, both were released on appearance tickets for Town of Walton court at a later date to answer the charges.


45 year old Kareem Young of Binghamton, was sentenced to 11 years in State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision after being found guilty as a second felony offender of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 counts of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, by a jury in Broome County Court In January, the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant At Young's residence in Binghamton, he was in possession of cocaine and implements of narcotics trafficking.

38 year old Nikita Kingsbury of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Monday and was sentenced to a 2-year period of incarceration to be followed by two years of post-release supervision. Kingsbury previously pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell, On July 13, 2023, Kingsbury was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury on allegations that she sold methamphetamine in the Village of Sidney on August 11, 2022. Shortly afterwards, she was arrested and then released on her own recognizance while the case was pending. Separately, a felony complaint was filed against Ms. Kingsbury alleging the sale of illegal narcotics in the Town of Davenport on May 21, 2024.

State Police issued a total of 10,240 tickets statewide during the Labor Day weekend enforcement campaign, which ran from Friday, August 30th to Labor Day, September 2nd. State Police utilized sobriety checkpoints, additional DWI patrols, and ticketed impaired and distracted drivers, they arrested 232 people for DWI. In Troop C, they had 12 DWI arrests, & they issued 405 tickets for speeding out of a total of 832 tickets.


37 year old Justin Button of Kirkwood, was sentenced in Broome County Court today to 4 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On March 9, 2023, Button was discovered to have a loaded and operable .25 caliber handgun while in the City of Binghamton, during a traffic stop by a Community Response Team.


State Police in Troop “C” will be hosting 2 child car seat checks this weekend. Troopers will be participating in the "Touch A Truck" events Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Broome County Fairgrounds in Whitney Point, & on Sunday in Broome County from 10:00am – 1:00pm at the ‘Paws for a Cause’ dog walk at Otsiningo Park. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 23 year old Alyssa Jones of Bainbridge for Promoting Prison Contraband. Deputies received information that Jones entered the Correctional Facility for Central Arraignment on an unrelated arrest, a search revealed that Jones was in possession of a knife, she was arraigned at the Delaware County Central Arraignment Court & was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear at Delhi Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.

State Police arrested 29 year old Cory Meadows of Oneonta for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Less Than 16 as Passenger & 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Troopers were dispatched to a complaint of a possible intoxicated driver, they located vehicle on the shoulder of State Highway 28, when the Troopers came closer, the operator drove through the grass of a property. Meadows failed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, She was arrested and the children were turned over to a sober third party. Meadows was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Milford Town Court on October 8th.

The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association held a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony this morning at the 9/11 Memorial in the quad. State Police arrested 21 year old Nathan Kurtz of Bainbridge for Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident. Troopers responded to a report of a vehicle that was disabled on County Road 48 and that it had left the scene of an accident. Troopers determined that Kurtz had driven the vehicle impaired and damaged a yard, he was transported to the Oneonta barracks where he was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert. Kurtz was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Otego Town Court on October 17th.

The State Labor Department announced that the number of Private Sector jobs is over 8.4 Million in July, the state's unemployment rate increased .1 to 4.3% in July, the statewide labor force participation rate held constant at 61.3%.


Broome County Sheriff’s Office Strategic Response Group public safety and crime response initiative was activated in June, The Full results included 16 Narcotics Arrests, 23 Warrant Arrests, 27 Vehicle and Traffic Arrests & 227 Traffic Violations Issued in areas of higher criminal activity by Utilizing statistical and crime-mapping data from the Southern Tier Crime Analysis Center in Binghamton.


State Trooper Christopher DiBartolo of Troop F in Middletown was arrested for 1st degree Robbery, criminal mischief & Officials Misconduct, following an investigation of an incident outside a residence in the village of Liberty in 2023. The victim came forward after he was involved in an incident with DiBartolo while he was on duty, reporting that Trooper DiBartolo took personal property from him, causing damage. DiBartolo was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and released on his own recognizance until the next court date scheduled for August 27, he has been suspended without pay from his position as a State Trooper.


The Rite Aid Pharmacy chain announced that they have closed 25 in New York state, and they will close another 29 by the end of this year. The Rite Aid at 94 Chestnut Street in Oneonta is slated to be closed, the chain has filed for bankruptcy protection in 2023, the chain is expected to close about 1000 of the existing 1800 stores in the US within the next year.


Village of Sidney officials announced that starting on September 1st, there will be an added "Manganese Removal Capital Project Debt Service" fee of $34.35 per quarter on your water bill. The fee goes for financing the new well, new infrastructure and new water treatment facility, the fee will be on all future quarterly water billings.

The Delaware County DA's Office announced that 32 year old James Lor of Margaretville pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals in Delaware County Court this week. Lor admitted that he had killed a dog, he was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in jail for committing this act, which violated the terms of his probation.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Michael Hitchcock of Otego for Criminal possession of a controlled substance & on an existing warrant, Hitchcock was arrested following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident in the Town of Oneonta, he was found to be in possession of a controlled substance, and was wanted on a warrant from Oneonta Police, he was processed & issued an appearance ticket, he was then transported to Oneonta Police Department and turned over to answer his outstanding warrant.


The Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals invites the public to a Community Forum TODAY at 5:30PM at Foothills Performing Arts Center. State Police were called Friday to Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle for a report of a one-car crash. When Troopers arrived, a 2007 Subaru Outback was observed crashed into a tree. An investigation determined that the driver and sole occupant, 67 year old Kenneth Zuidema of Pennsylvania, drove off of I-81 and struck a tree, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.


National Weather Service officials confirmed a record breaking EF-1 tornado touched down in the City of Buffalo early Monday afternoon. The confirmation means that New York State has had 26 tornadoes this year, breaking the previous record of 25 set in 1992, over 20 tornadoes touched down in the month of July.

State Police arrested 57 year old Terri White of Otego for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated. Troopers were dispatched to check on White’s welfare when they discovered she had driven her vehicle while intoxicated. After administering Standardized Field Sobriety Tests that revealed indications of impairment, White was arrested. Her reportable B.A.C was .23%. White was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on August 20, 2024 then released to a sober third party.


State Police arrested 33 year old Shane Katalinas of Unadilla for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Troopers were dispatched by Otsego County 911 to a report of a male slumped over the wheel of a vehicle on Winney Hill Road in Oneonta, Troopers found both Katalinas and a female passenger unresponsive but were able to wake them. Katalinas was arrested, he was transported to State Police in Oneonta where he was additionally evaluated by a New York State Police Drug Recognition Expert. Katalinas was processed and issued appearance tickets to the Oneonta Town Court on August 20, 2024, and released to a sober third party.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 24 year old Nicholas Arter of Norwich for 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act, Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors, Possessing Obscene Sexual Performance by a Child, Endangering the Welfare of a Child & Sexual Abuse. The Sheriff’s Office Detective’s Division received several rape complaints involving Arter engaging in sexual acts with multiple underage females. Arter was arraigned in Chenango County Centralized Arraignment where he was remanded to the custody of the Chenango County Correctional Division on $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond, and $50,000 partially secured. Arter is to appear in the Village of Oxford Court at a later date.


Chenango County Sheriff Office arrested 36 year old Wayne Moore of Earlville last week for Public Lewdness. Moore was charged following a complaint that Moore was nude in the front yard of a home, it was the 2nd incident that deputies handled regarding Moore, he was taken into custody and released with an appearance ticket and is to appear in the Village of Earlville Court at a later date.


The Trial of 64 year old Douglas Webb of Sherburne ended in a mistrial on Friday. Webb was accused of groping 3 students while operate a school bus, He was indicted in 2022 for offering a false instrument for filing with the intent to defraud, plus falsifying business records, 3 counts of forcible touching, & 3 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, State Police reported that Webb had failed to disclose a previous 1987 conviction to his employers on his bus driver application. The jury could not reach a verdict in the case after several hours of deliberation last week.


The Chenango County Planning Department is asking for County Residents to take a short period of time & fill out an online survey, so that they can put together a comprehensive plan on the county's future, Planning Director Shane Butler explains:

50 year old Brian Kingsbury of Sidney pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and was sentenced to 1.5 to 3 years in state prison. Kingsbury was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury on March 7, for possessing several stolen guns. On July 29, Kingsbury appeared in Delaware County Court for a conference on his pending indictment. After the conference, he pleaded guilty, he admitted that he possessing a stolen shotgun in Sidney in July of 2023.


State Police arrested 35 year old Spencer Gransbury of Walton for 5 counts of Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. An investigation revealed that Gransbury was in possession of images consistent with child sexual exploitation. His arrest follows an investigation stemming from a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. On August 2, a search warrant was executed at Gransbury’s residence, he was arrested and processed & was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Central Arraignment.

41 year old Willis Bickham Jr, of Binghamton, was found guilty of 1st Degree Rape, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child by a Broome County Jury Thursday. On June 24, 2023, Bickham Jr. took a 12-year-old child into an apartment at 2 Green Street in Binghamton and engaged in sexual acts. Sentencing is scheduled for October 24, 2024 where Bickham is facing up to 25 years in State Prison followed by 10 to 25 years of post-release supervision, and he must register as a Sex Offender with the state. Due to his criminal history, the Broome County District Attorney’s Office will pursue a sentence of 25 years to life under the Persistent Felony Offender guidelines.


The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force arrested 56-year-old Phillip Alvarez of Endwell, they recovered drugs and weapons from an apartment at 341 Main Street Binghamton. Police seized various weapons, ammunition , cocaine, crack cocaine, packaging materials, and over $5500 cash from suspected drug sales. Alvarez was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 5 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Obstructing Governmental Administration & Resisting Arrest, an additional search warrant was executed in the Town of Union where investigators found around $1,500 in suspected drug proceeds.
