The Place in Norwich has signed a contract with the Chenango County Department of Social Services to run the Summer Youth Employment Program, a program of New York State's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The Place will receive funds to make this program possible for Chenango County youth. The program runs today through July 31st, providing youth ages 14 to 20 years of age, from eligible households with valuable work experience and a paycheck. State Police arrested 25 year old Hunter Lawrence of Auburn, New York, following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The investigation determined that Lawrence engaged in multiple sexual encounters with a victim under the age of 17 over an extended period of time. Lawrence is employed as a Deputy with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. There are no allegations that the conduct occurred while he was on duty. Lawrence was charged with 4 counts of Rape, plus Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Lawrence was processed and transported to the Cortland County Jail for arraignment, The investigation remains ongoing.

State Police responded Friday afternoon to a one-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 81 in the town of Lisle. An investigation determined that an SUV operated by 59 year old Paul Veeder of Virginia was north on Interstate 81, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave roadway and overturn. A 19-year-old female from Virginia, was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and became pinned beneath the SUV. She was transported to Wilson Medical Center, where she is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, Veeder and 3 other occupants were also transported to Wilson Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Veeder was issued traffic citations. The northbound passing lane of Interstate 81 north was closed during the investigation.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 71 year old Debra Sanford of Garrattsville for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Driving While Intoxicated following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident in the Town of New Lisbon, Sanford is accused of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of narcotics, and possessed 2 different illegal types of controlled substances on her person, she was ordered to appear in New Lisbon Town Court at a later date.

State Police will increase patrols to crack down on drunk and drugged driving and other traffic infractions over the Fourth of July holiday, through Sunday night. Drivers can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and DWI patrols, Troopers will also be looking for motorists who are using their phones and other electronic devices while driving, they should also remember to “move over” for stopped emergency and hazard vehicles when traveling. Last year’s Fourth of July enforcement period, Troopers issued 10,497 total tickets, arrested 210 people for DWI, 258 tickets for distracted driving, 301 tickets for Move Over law violations.

Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced that the State of Emergency for bot the towns of Pittsfield & Laurens have been rescinded today. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in those towns as recovery efforts are continuing.

49 year old Thomas George of Binghamton, was found guilty following a jury trial in Broome County Court for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On July 1, 2025, Police conducted a traffic stop in Johnson City, officers located drug paraphernalia and a quantity of methamphetamine, they also discovered that George had a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband, with 10 rounds of ammunition. George is scheduled to be sentenced on August 14th, he faces up to 15 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of post-release supervision.

State Police at Binghamton responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving an SUV and motorcycle on Hunt Hill Road in the town of Fenton Thursday. The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling north on Hunt Hill Road when the operator was making a left turn into a driveway, the motorcycle was traveling south when the 2 vehicles collided, the motorcycle became engulfed in flames, The operator of the motorcycle did not survive. The SUV operator did not report any injuries. The roadway was closed during the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

38 year old Jennifer Hewitt of Bloomville, was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury, Counts 1 and 2 are for 3rd degree Grand Larceny, for unlawfully issuing a check from a different bank to Delaware National Bank of Delhi and then withdrawing more than $3000, to have insufficient funds in either account to cover her withdrawal on 2 occasions.

29 year old Wesley Eignor of Hobart, was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury for Attempted Assault, Obstruction of Governmental Administration and Aggravated unlicensed operation of a Motor Vehicle. The indictments stem from an incident where Eignor was stopped by a Delaware County Deputy for speeding, he resisted arrest & assaulted the Deputy, and did not have a license or privilege of operating a motor vehicle.

35 Year old Ciera Washington of the Bronx pleaded guilty in US District Court to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and aggravated identity theft. Washington admitted that from April 2023 through October 2024, she worked with 2 others to steal the personal information of Medicaid beneficiaries and use that information to fraudulently obtain prescription medications from pharmacies throughout New York State & the Northeastern States, which caused a loss of nearly $4 million to the Medicaid program and tens of thousands of dollars to pharmacies. Washington agreed to forfeit over $400,000 in proceeds from her crimes and to consent to an order of restitution for the losses they caused. Washington faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment on the fraud count and a mandatory term of 2 years on the aggravated identity theft count, which must run consecutively, when sentenced in October in Federal Court, She also faces a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that more than $10 million in funding was awarded to 20 projects as part of Round 2 of the Municipal Parks and Recreation (MPR) Grant Program to fund the development and improvement of municipal parks and recreation sites statewide for the public to enjoy. Funding for this program was provided by the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. 1 of the awards will go to the City of Norwich, they receive $810,000 to improve safety, accessibility and play opportunities by replacing aging playground equipment, court space and safety surfacing at the park on Hale Street.

State and local law enforcement agencies will increase patrols to crack down on reckless and impaired driving statewide ahead of and during the July 4th holiday weekend. This campaign began Monday & will run through Sunday, July 5. Law enforcement officers across New York will conduct sobriety checkpoints and target dangerous and aggressive driving during what is considered the busiest travel weekend of the summer. To help ease travel during the busy holiday weekend, temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will be suspended from 6 am. Thursday, July 2, through 6 am. Monday, July 6, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

The State Police Troop C Violent Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team & Community Stabilization Unit conducted a traffic stop Saturday on a vehicle on State Route 206 in the town of Downsville after observing Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. The operator of the vehicle was Maurice Stewart, who was charged with several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Police seized cocaine, methamphetamine, 2 cell phones & Cash, Stewart was processed & was transported to the Delaware County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

The Delaware County Board of Supervisors has approved funding for a countywide Fire Services Assessment to be conducted by Emergency Services Consulting International. The approval follows recommendations from the Delaware County Fire Advisory Board’s Recruitment and Retention Committee and an overwhelming majority of County Fire Chiefs regarding the challenges facing Delaware County’s volunteer fire service. The Delaware County Board of Supervisors approved Resolution No. 96 authorizing the transfer of $73,828 to retain ESCI to perform the assessment, which should take about 9 months to complete following project initiation and data collection.

Governor Hochul today announced the release of the $30 million Agricultural Resiliency Against Tariffs Program for New York agricultural producers. The tariff relief program will provide direct payments of a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $25,000 to eligible producers. Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 60 year old Robert Sanfelice of the Town of Union, for allegedly harassing a neighborhood family because of their race and ethnic origin since 2020. Sanfelice was charged with several Counts of Harassment, Sanfelice was taken to Central Arraignment where he was released on his own recognizance, to appear in the Town of Union Court at a later date.

51 year old David Gensler of Delhi, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court, to 5 separate indictments, for Unlawful Imprisonment, Attempted Bribery of a Witness, Criminal Contempt, Falsely Reporting an Incident, Aggravated Harassment, for various attacks against a few county Residents, Orders of Protections were issued on behalf of the victims, Gensler was sentenced to 2 terms of 1 year in prison to run concurrently, plus time served on other counts.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 45 year old Ryan Barriger of Walton following the execution of an arrest warrant issued by the Town of Walton Court.   On June 24th, Deputies responded to an "in progress" domestic incident, Deputies found that Barriger had engaged in a physical domestic with another person while a child was present, Thursday, Deputies received court documents they located & arrested Barriger, he was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Harassment & he was processed, arraigned & was released on his own recognizance and was directed to reappear at the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 29 year old Makayla Rutherford of Hartwick, for 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child & 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, following an investigation into a domestic dispute in the Town of Hartwick. Rutherford is accused of possessing illegal controlled substances while having custody of 2 children, she was arrested and processed on the charges & was turned over to Otsego County Corrections pending Arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Sandra Schaffer of Franklin following the investigation of a domestic incident. On May 20th, Deputies were dispatched to a domestic incident in the Town of Sidney.  Schaffer allegedly kicked another person in the chest, Deputies submitted requests for a Criminal Summons and an Order of Protection, Deputies received the documents & on June 17th, Schaffer was charged with Harassment, she was issued the Order of Protection & was released and ordered to appear in the Town of Sidney Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Broome County 911 Center received multiple reports of a fire at the Knights Inn, at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, at about 6:00 AM today, a total of 6 fatalities have been confirmed. Additional information, including the identities of the victims, will be released at a later time, 2 others were taken to Wilson Medical Center. over 70 residents have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. A temporary shelter has been set up at the Vestal United Methodist Church. Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke in the front of the building and flames showing from the rear of the building. The fire spread rapidly, and multiple Fire Departments, ambulance crews and police agencies arrived on scene to assist. The New York State Office of Fire, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Broome County Mobile Crisis Response Team is on scene, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

E-bikes & E-scooters, Must be operated by riders 16 years or older, Helmets are required for riders ages 16 and 17, No sidewalk operation is allowed unless locally permitted, Riders must follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians, E-scooters limited to roads 30 mph or less. E-dirt bikes & off-highway electric motorcycles are Classified as off-highway motorcycles under State law, they are Not legal on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths, or parks unless fully registered, insured, and street legal, Most recreational models do not meet these requirements, Use is limited to private property with permission Parents or guardians may be subject to a charge of endangering the welfare of a child for non compliance.

State Attorney General Letitia James today released guidance to help New Yorkers understand their health insurance options and avoid scams as major changes to New York's Essential Plan take effect. Beginning July 1, 2026, New Yorkers enrolled in the Essential Plan with household incomes over 200 percent of the federal poverty level will no longer be eligible for that coverage, which translates to approximately 450,000 New Yorkers who are set to lose Essential Plan coverage. New Yorkers who enrolled in health insurance through New York State of Health can get free help renewing or changing coverage from New York State of Health-certified enrollment assistors by visiting nystateofhealth.ny.gov or calling 1-855-355-5777. Anyone who believes they have been misled, scammed, or improperly enrolled in a health insurance plan is encouraged to contact OAG's Health Care Helpline for assistance.

State Police arrested 56 year old Joel Salinas of Bainbridge following a traffic stop on Chenango County Road 35 last Tuesday. Troopers observed a vehicle committing multiple violations, initiated a traffic stop, Troopers observed a sawed-off shot gun and other illegal weapons, Salinas was driving to sell the shotgun, the investigation resulted in the seizure of several other illegally possessed weapons. Salinas was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Sale of a Firearm, he was processed & transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

Sidney Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire with smoke and flames visible Friday night at about 7:00 PM at 826 Circle Drive, heavy smoke was showing from the ridge of the roof. Sidney firefighters launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack and contained the fire to one apartment. Assistance was provided by Masonville, Unadilla, Sidney Center, Oneonta, Guilford & Harpursville fire departments, no injuries were reported, Sidney was back in service at about 8:30PM.

The National Weather Service announced that their survey teams confirmed 2 tornadoes Thursday, an EF-1 just south of Rock Stream in Yates County & an EF-0 near Cortland, other locations were surveyed in Cortland County, though it was determined that strong winds were the cause of damage east of where the tornado lifted.

The Chenango County Health Department announced that the BOIL WATER ORDER has been Lifted for the Village of Bainbridge Water System & residents may resume normal use of the water. Emergency water quality monitoring has indicated that the water system again meets State Drinking Water Standards. Some residents may experience discolored water or a change in taste or odor of the water; if this occurs flush all water lines for 15-20 minutes or until the water runs clear. Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center announced today a grant award totaling $324,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts to support the organization’s goal of sound proofing their various event spaces, and to build an addition for more dressing rooms to the Production Center. This grant is part of a capital project funding announcement by NYSCA, which totals over $82 million to 132 arts and culture facilities across New York State, with the improvements, Foothills will be able to host more events simultaneously.

A 2nd Fundraiser has been scheduled for Luszi's Legacy Saving Senior Paws. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that nearly $140 million in federal funding is available to support counter-terrorism and emergency preparedness efforts across the state. The funding is provided by FEMA to support local security preparedness efforts, Locally Otsego & Chenango Counties receive over $58,000, Delaware County over $53,000.

An Otsego County Grand Jury indicted Sergeant Kristopher Solovitch on Tuesday, he is charged with 1 count of 2nd degree Forgery, and 4 counts of Falsifying Business Records, Solovitch’s arrest stems from the arrest of Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Fellrath in Herkimer County on May 29, for possessing Cocaine while on duty in a county vehicle outside of the County, Fellrath was being investigated for a complaint into fraudulent overtime, which led to Solovitch’s indictment, State Police arrested Solovitch, he was arraigned & released in his own recognizance.

Otsego County Emergency Services reported that Milford Fire Fighters responded to a fire on Lee Drive Monday Night. Multiple fire crews from the surrounding area assisted, 2 people were in the residence, 1 suffered minor injuries, a vehicle was damaged, the Red Cross responded to assist the displaced residents, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Police Troop C Traffic Incident Management Unit conducted an Operation Hard Hat enforcement detail on I-81 in near Homer Monday, where highway crews were making pavement and pothole repairs. During the enforcement, Troopers issued a total of 60 citations and made one arrest, 49 year old Rashi Brown of Illinois for Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and 10 traffic violations. Police issued 25 speeding tickets, 10 for failing to use seat belts, 10 for using an electronic device while driving & 1 for failing to move over.

The Madison County District Attorney, State Police, University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest has been made in connection with a shooting on the SUNY Morrisville campus that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck back on November 3rd of 2025. The victim was not a student, and was taken to Upstate Medical Hospital for emergency surgery. A Madison County grand jury indicted 19 year old Kido Simon on 6 counts, including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Simon was a student at SUNY Morrisville at the time of the shooting, he is being held at Madison County Jail on bail set at $1,000,000 cash, $1,500,000 bond and $2,000,000 partially unsecured bond. Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 3 at the Madison County Courthouse. 1 other person is wanted in connection with this case who remains at large.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the 2026 Regional Economic Development Council Initiative, eligible REDCs will compete for funding through the $150 million ACHIEVE competition to support high-impact regional projects to advance regional goals. On Friday, State Police arrested Lieutenant Thomas Fellrath of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges following an investigation by the State Police & the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office. Fellrath is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Defrauding the Government, Official Misconduct, Fellrath is accused of possessing 10 grams of cocaine during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Herkimer County, At the time of his arrest, Fellrath was on-duty and driving an unmarked Otsego County Sheriff’s Office vehicle outside of Otsego County.

Delaware County has continued to transition operations of the senior meals program after Delaware Opportunities abruptly ceased operating on May 7th. Delaware County Office for the Aging has supported Senior meals both at congregate meal sites and through home meal deliveries. Congregate meal sites are now fully staffed and operational in Delhi, Hancock, Walton & Grand Gorge, the Margaretville senior meals dining center is open and located back in the Margaretville Methodist Church. The Sidney senior dining center has been temporarily relocated to the Sidney Community Cultural Center at 1 Bridge Street in Sidney, today that site will be operational to serve meals on site and prepare meals for home delivery. The County continues to work with the owners of the Sidney Senior Housing site to permanently relocate senior meals back to the senior nutrition site at 21 Liberty Street Sidney. Plans are going forward to unearth a Time Capsule buried in Unadilla in 1976 and have it opened this July 4th, as part of a celebration for the 250th anniversary of America. Gloria Meenan was one of the 10 year old students involved in the 1976 plans for what went into the time capsule, she told WCDO News about the origins of the plan:

Keiko Howard is an artist and painter from Sidney Center who is painting a mural on the Liberty Street Side of 7 Stones in downtown Sidney, She told WCDO News that she was commissioned to paint the mural after completing a small 1 on the side of Sidney Flowers & Gifts:

The 218th Session of the New York State Police Basic School held their graduation today at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. 175 Troopers graduated, 23 are training in Troop C, 8 are local from the Troop C area. The new Troopers will be starting May 30 and will be with a Field Training Officer for 10 weeks before getting their official permanent station assignment. State Police arrested 52 year old Jonathan Menhennett of Oneonta after a dispute at a residence in the town of Oneonta. Menhennett allegedly menaced a victim & made threats with 2 knives, the victim sustained injuries but did not wish to be transported to a hospital. Menhennett was charged with 2 counts of Menacing, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was processed & was transported to the Otsego County Jail for Centralized Arraignment.

State Police arrested 47 year old Brendan Murphy of Oneonta after he violated an Order of Protection & was charged with Criminal Contempt. Troopers responded to a report of a violation of an Order of Protection in Oneonta, the victim, who is a protected party, was invited inside Murphy's residence, a verbal argument turned physical, the victim left, called 911 & was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital for treatment. Murphy had a previous conviction for Criminal Contempt, elevating his charges to a felony. Murphy was processed & turned over to the Otsego County Jail for Arraignment

UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital will open the doors of its new Broad Street Entrance as well as a new Orthopedics Suite today, A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting, along with tours of the new spaces, will take place from 12:30 to 3 pm. on Thursday, May 28. Testing from the recent stomach illnesses in the Broome County Correctional Facility has confirmed that the cause was Salmonella infection. On Monday, incarcerated individuals began reporting symptoms of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches to medical staff, over 300 individuals reported similar symptoms over the next 2 days. Results returned on Wednesday have confirmed that the illness stems from a food-borne bacterial Salmonella infection. Correctional Facility medical and housing staff and officials from the Broome County Department of Health and Broome County Office of Emergency Services, are treating inmates, Salmonella bacteria usually stems from contaminated foods, including beef, poultry, seafood, milk or eggs & unwashed fruits and vegetables. The investigation is continuing.

79 year old Stanley Suchy of Stamford pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court today to sexual crimes against minors. In November, Suchy was indicted on 3 counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, and 1 count of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, he agreed to plead guilty to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, which includes a term of 10 years incarceration and 20 years of post-release supervision, registration as a sex offender as well as other fines and restrictions. Suchy admitted to multiple instances of sexual contact with a child under the age of 13 between 2010 & 2020. After pleading guilty, Suchy was remanded to jail to await sentencing on April 21st.
