Governor Hochul announced that improvements are scheduled to be made to more Than 4,120 Highway Lane Miles and over 3600 bridges will be Replaced, Rehabilitated or Improved Across the State. In the Southern Tier, 644 miles of highway, & 374 bridges will be upgraded.
State DEC announced another record-breaking year for the CleanSweepNY program. More than 645,500 pounds of chemicals, including pesticides, paint, oil, flammable and nonflammable liquids, and other hazardous materials, were collected during 2025—the highest amount in the program’s 23-year history and an overall increase of 9.3% from the previous record collection year. Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond was officially sworn in Monday morning following his re-election to a 3rd term as Sheriff. The oath of office was administered by Delaware County Court Judge John Hubbard during a ceremony attended by county officials, law enforcement personnel, family members, and community supporters.
State Forest Rangers & the Otsego County Sheriff's Office conducted a Wilderness Search On December 25 at 6:18 pm., the Sheriff’s Office called for assistance in the search for a patient who jumped out of an ambulance. The ambulance was transporting the 47-year-old unidentified Unadilla resident from Fox Hospital to Bassett Medical Center, Ambulance personnel pursued the patient but lost sight near Walnut and Linden Streets, they searched a wooded area, about 5 hours later, a civilian notified Rangers that someone was pounding on the front door of a house on Linden Street, a Deputy found the patient sitting at the bus stop shelter and drove the patient to the hospital.

1 of the new laws going into effect on Thursday January 1st, is an effort to crack down on money laundering and "shell company" secrecy, the New York LLC Transparency Act stipulated that liability companies (LLC's) formed in or authorized to do business in New York must now disclose their "beneficial owners", or the actual people who own or control the company, to the Department of State. Existing companies have until the end of the year to file, while any new LLC's formed on or after January 1, 2026, January 1 have to submit the information within 30 days of formation.
38 year old Duprey Range of Binghamton pleaded guilty in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Weapon and will be sentenced to 7½ years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision. Range also pleaded guilty to Attempted Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by an Inmate, in exchange for a sentence of ½ to 3 years in State Prison, to be served concurrently with the sentence on the weapons conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for March 25, 2026, in Broome County Court.
The State Department of Motor Vehicles reported that New York State saw a drop in the number of fatal crashes in 2025 compared to 2024. From January 2025 to October 2025, there were 681 recorded motor vehicle fatalities, a decrease from the 766 deaths reported during the same time frame in 2024. In the upstate counties, the number of fatalities fell from 490 in 2024 to 420. Fatal motorcycle crashes also dropped in 2025, from 157 to 134.

Norwich Firefighters were assisted by the Oxford, North Norwich and Sherburne Fire Departments, Chenango County Office of Emergency Services, NYSEG, Norwich Water Department, Chenango County Sheriff's Office.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested Joshua Sandell of New Lisbon following an investigation of a domestic dispute in the Town of New Lisbon. Sandell allegedly engaged in a physical domestic dispute while there were children present in the residence, he was held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment for Harassment & Endangering the Welfare of a minor.
The Delaware Valley Humane Society reminds area residents that there are 3 days left to make a donation to DVHS that will be matched by several area businesses through the Shelter Saviors program. Donations can be mailed to PO Box 182, Sidney NY 13838, the check must be dated by 12/31/25 for it to count. Links to other sites to donate with can be found at DVHumane.org. For ever dollar donate, the Shelter Saviors businesses will match it through December 31st.

Governor Hochul signed legislation that will require social media platforms to display labels warning of the dangerous impact certain features can have on young users’ mental health. The Legislation requires social media platforms that offer addictive feeds, auto play or infinite scroll to post warning labels on their platforms. Recent studies show that adolescents who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression, About half claim that social media makes them feel worse about their bodies, and teenagers with the highest levels of social media use are nearly twice as likely to rate their overall mental health as poor or very poor.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Arthur Proctor of Richfield Springs for Sexual Abuse, Forcible Touching & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation of sexual abuse at a residence in the Town of Richfield over the summer of 2025. Proctor is accused of y subjecting a juvenile victim to unwanted sexual contact, Proctor was held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Arraignment. An order of protection was requested on behalf of the victim.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 38 year old Mark Cassaday of Oneonta, for Promoting Prison Contraband & Criminal Mischief at the Otsego County Jail. Sheriff investigators were notified by Correctional Facility staff that an inmate had intentionally damaged an outlet cover and used the broken pieces to fashion makeshift weapons. Cassady was processed before being returned to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await Centralized Arraignment.

State Route 206 near the Robert W. Harrold BOCES Campus has been closed this afternoon due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes, WCDO News will have more details as they become available from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

State Police will focus on impaired, distracted, and reckless driving, as wells as those violating the state's "Move Over" laws. & they will set up DUI checkpoints on highways all over the state.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced that scammers are impersonating the County Planning Department. Scammers are looking to collect money from zoning applicants, using county logos, actual application information, and the actual names of planning staff. The Otsego County Planning Department will never request or charge money for their review of a planning or zoning application. If you receive such a request, do not pay it.
State Police & Emergency squads responded to tractor trailer accidents earlier today. 1 Tractor Trailer rolled over in the westbound lane of I-88 Near Exit 1 this morning, which closed down a portion of the highway. Also at about 6:50 this morning, State Police responded to I-81 south in the town of Virgil for a crash involving 2 tractor trailers that both jack-knifed, 1 driver was taken to an area hospital with back pain, the highway was closed for over 5 hours for clean up & removal of the vehicles. Snowy road conditions contributed to both accidents.
The State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation announced that on January 1, they are hosting the annual First Day Hikes celebrations at state parks, historic sites, nature trails, environmental education centers, and other public lands across New York State. Deposit Fire Department released more details about a fire on December 14, on North Sanford Road in the town of Sanford. Deposit, Eastern Broome Emergency Services and the Harpursville Fire Department were dispatched after a resident reported a smoke on the 2nd floor. the fire was quickly knocked down, it was determined that the fire started in the chimney of a wood burning stove and spread into the walls of the structure. Everyone was able to escape the residence uninjured. a 2nd alarm was requested with additional response from Afton, Windsor, Masonville & West Windsor.
The US Department of Justice announced the results of Operation Relentless Justice, a coordinated enforcement effort to identify, track, and arrest child sex predators. The nationwide crackdown resulted in over 205 child victims being located and the arrests of over 293 child sexual abuse offenders, including 6 in the upstate counties. The coordinated effort was executed over the course of 2 weeks by all 56 FBI field offices, the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section in the Department’s Criminal Division, and U.S. Attorneys’ offices around the country. The Department urges the public to remain vigilant and report suspected exploitation of a child through the FBI's tip-line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), tips.fbi.gov.

Sidney Police Department responded Friday Afternoon to a report of a male subject pointing a firearm at a female at the Circle Drive Apartment Complex. Officers arrested 21 year old Connor Steidle of South Carolina, a search of the residence resulted in the discovery of a large quantity of cocaine and 2 firearms, including a handgun. Steidle was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & 3 counts of Menacing. Steidle was transported to Delaware County Central Arraignment, where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bail. Sidney Police Department was assisted by State Police with this arrest.
State Police responded Saturday to 438 County Highway 11, Lot 30 in the town of Laurens for to assist at a fully engulfed fire. West Laurens Fire, West Oneonta Fire, Mount Vision Fire and Laurens Fire were already on scene attempting to get the fire under control. It was determined that the resident, 62 year old Roger Delong was still inside and was later located deceased. Investigators from New York State Fire and the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services responded to the location and will determine the cause of the fire.

Last Wednesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol responded to the latest in a series of reported thefts of returnable cans and bottles from the BSA Troop 152 at Valley Christian Reformed Church in the Town of Chenango. A camera was installed inside the bin, investigators identified the suspect as 69 year old John Dubrava of Chenango Forks, who had previously been arrested in Chenango County in a similar case. Investigators located Dubrava and the vehicle from the thefts at a residence in Chenango Forks, he was charged with 3 Counts of Burglary & Petty Larceny.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies in the Town of Delhi and observed an E-Bike traveling on State Highway 10, which is prohibited and the operator was not wearing a helmet as required by law. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who was identified as 51-year-old Daniel White of Meridale, White was charged with felony DWI, Unlawful Operation of an E-Bike on a Highway, Operating E-Bike while Impaired, White was released on an appearance ticket and traffic summonses and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date to answer the charges.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced more than $300 million in new state funding to support health care transformation projects across New York. The awards, made through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program, to support 22 projects aimed at improving health information technology by expanding patient electronic medical records, strengthening cybersecurity and patient information security, and expanding telehealth services. Locally, UHS Hospitals will receive 1.5 million dollars to expand their Telehealth services.

Last Wednesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Road Patrol responded to the latest in a series of reported thefts of returnable cans and bottles from the BSA Troop 152 at Valley Christian Reformed Church in the Town of Chenango. A camera was installed inside the bin, investigators identified the suspect as 69 year old John Dubrava of Chenango Forks, who had previously been arrested in Chenango County in a similar case. Investigators located Dubrava and the vehicle from the thefts at a residence in Chenango Forks, he was charged with 3 Counts of Burglary & Petty Larceny.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies in the Town of Delhi and observed an E-Bike traveling on State Highway 10, which is prohibited and the operator was not wearing a helmet as required by law. Deputies conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, who was identified as 51-year-old Daniel White of Meridale, White was charged with felony DWI, Unlawful Operation of an E-Bike on a Highway, Operating E-Bike while Impaired, White was released on an appearance ticket and traffic summonses and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date to answer the charges.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced more than $300 million in new state funding to support health care transformation projects across New York. The awards, made through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program, to support 22 projects aimed at improving health information technology by expanding patient electronic medical records, strengthening cybersecurity and patient information security, and expanding telehealth services. Locally, UHS Hospitals will receive 1.5 million dollars to expand their Telehealth services.

A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4 Count Indictment against 79 year old Stanley Suchy of Stamford, for 3 counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child and 1 count Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, for allegedly performing sexual acts with a minor child, if convicted Suchy faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County jail without bail.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is conducting a food drive through December 30th. County Residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable & Non-Expired Food Items to the Sheriff's Office front lobby at Phoebe Lane in Delhi, between 8:00 Am & 8:00 PM, all of the items collected to will donated to the Food Bank at Delaware Opportunities for distribution to food pantries throughout the County, those who can not make it to the Sheriff's Office, can call 607-832-5595 to make arrangements for a deputy to pick up the donated items.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the indictment of 18 year old James Tinebra of Plainview, A Delaware County Grand Jury indicted Tinebra for Burglary & Grand Larceny for stealing a State Police Vehicle from a repair shop in Davenport on November 5th at about 3:45 AM. Tinebra was located later in the day by the Schodack Police Department in Rensselaer County, where he is also facing separate charges.
The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services reported a fatal structure Fire Saturday Morning at 125 Lake Street in Cooperstown. Cooperstown Fire Department, with mutual Aid from surrounding communities entered the structure and found an 89 year old female, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the identity of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
Broome County Sheriff's Office & area firefighters responded Friday to the report of a car crashing into a house in the Town of Union. Responding deputies found that the driver, an 82-year-old female, was attempting to back out of a residential driveway and mistakenly accelerated forward off the driveway and into the adjacent house, rupturing a natural gas line. NYSEG was alerted and the gas line was turned off, nearby residents were temporarily evacuated, The driver was transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for minor injuries. No charges were filed.
Last week was Crash Responder Safety Week, and State Troopers joined the State DOT to focus on Move Over Law violations. Troopers from the Troop C Traffic Incident Management Unit teamed up with DOT crews on I-81 in Cortland County and I-88 in the town of Otego. On November 20th, Troopers issued 30 tickets on I-81 in Cortland County and 9 tickets on I-88 in the town of Otego, on November 21, Troopers issued 39 tickets on I-81 in Cortland County. New York State implemented the Move Over Law in 2010 to reduce crashes involving emergency responders stopped along the roadway. The law later expanded to include hazard vehicles, tow trucks, and highway workers. In 2023, the law expanded again, requiring drivers to slow down and move over for any vehicle stopped on the roadway.
Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute, in progress, in the Town of Harpersfield, Deputies arrested 35-year-old Michael Turim of Harpersfield, for Strangulation, Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Mischief and Unlawful Imprisonment, Turim was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where he was held for arraignment.

State Police are attempting to locate 15 year old Sierra Foley of Sauquoit and 16 year old Paige Roberts of Marcy. Both teens were last seen together on the evening of October 21, 2025, at Sierra’s residence in Oneida County. They are believed to be traveling in an unknown vehicle, Police believe they may be traveling to New York City or Pennsylvania. Paige Roberts is described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, 150 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing gray sweatpants and a gray sweatshirt, Sierra Foley is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, 110 pounds, with blonde hair and green eyes, wearing red sweatpants and a red sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Police at 315-366-6000.
The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45 year old Derek Jordan of Milford, 45 year old Keith Blush of Milford & 30 year old Ashley Goble of Milford, on a variety of drug & weapons charges, following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Otsego County Probation Department. On October 9th, Otsego County probation Officers & Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Derek Jordan, who was taken in to custody on traffic offenses, During a search of Jordan’s residence, Blush and Goble were inside the residence, they were wanted by State Police and the New Hartford Police Departments on warrants. Officers observed a firearm, drugs and drug paraphernalia, Jordan and Blush were processed and turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment, Goble was issued an Appearance Ticket to the Town of Milford Court, and she was turned over to New Hartford Police Officers. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are pending.
New York Secretary of State Walter Mosley announced the groundbreaking of a $8.3 million boutique hotel in Norwich as part of the City’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative . The Principle Hotel will have 61 rooms and feature a rooftop lounge, restaurant and event room, The 12,000 square-foot property at 14-16 South Broad Street, was once part of the SUNY Morrisville campus. In addition to the hotel, other DRI projects in Norwich include the Rehabilitation of the Unguentine Building, Improve East and West parks: Upgrade the Martin W. Kappel Theater, Enhance the American Avenue Streetscape & Rehabilitate the Heritage Building.
The New York State Department of Health today released a new report showing a continued decline in tobacco use among high school students across the state. The report, shows that 1 in 6 Youth Still Use Tobacco, the lowest since tracking began in 2000. Cigarette smoking remains low, with just over 2% of students reporting current use, E-cigarette use has declined sharply to about 13%, however, Nicotine pouch use is rising, doubling from 1.5% to 3.0% since 2022.

The ceremony was held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. Today’s graduation increases the State Police ranks to approximately 5,110 sworn members, about 60 of the new troopers were assigned to Troop C in Sidney.
On October 16 at 10:48 p.m., Otsego County requested Forest Ranger assistance in the search for a hunter reported missing by his spouse. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, Otsego County Emergency Services, Garratsville Fire Department, Laurens Fire Department, New York State Police, and New York State Park Police and staff all joined the search efforts in Gilbert Lake State Park. Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy’s located the 67-year-old from Remsen deceased in a tree stand. Rangers used a rope system to help extricate the subject and turned them over to the county coroner, the cause of death has not been released.

Short was known to go for walks on Tracy Creek Road. Vestal Police used a drone with heat detection capability and deployed a K9 unit with negative results. Rangers assigned linear searches of the roads and Tracy Creek, a neighbor found Short behind his house calling for help, after she had fallen into a bush, hurt her back, and saw the lights from searchers, but wasn’t strong enough or loud enough for them to hear. Rangers and Vestal Fire Department members carried the subject, she was checked out & was returned to family.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced Lactalis USA will invest more than $75 million to upgrade both its Walton and Buffalo facilities, enabling them to expand capacity and gain efficiencies. The projects in Delaware and Erie counties include the purchase of new equipment and upgrades that will allow the dairy manufacturer to retain more than 800 full time jobs and create more than 50 new jobs. The Walton plant produces Breakstone’s Sour Cream and Cottage Cheese. It will undergo a $15 million modernization, focusing on automating and expanding the cottage cheese and sour cream production lines, enhancing efficiency, capacity, and sustainability.

Chenango County Office of Emergency Services announced today an Immediate Bridge Closure at County Road 32 between County Road 33 and Dan Main Road in the Town of Norwich, over Johnson Creek, The bridge will be closed until further notice, it needs repairs following recent storm damage, there will be no on-site detour. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Tyler Clark of Unadilla for Criminal Contempt, Harassment, Criminal Mischief & Trespassing following an investigation into a complaint in the Town of Unadilla. Clark is accused of entering the victim’s property, in violation of a valid order of protection, and intentionally caused damage to the Victim’s vehicle, he was subsequently arrested and held at the Otsego County Jail to await arraignment.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Tyler Clark of Unadilla for Criminal Contempt, Harassment, Criminal Mischief & Trespassing following an investigation into a complaint in the Town of Unadilla. Clark is accused of entering the victim’s property, in violation of a valid order of protection, and intentionally caused damage to the Victim’s vehicle, he was subsequently arrested and held at the Otsego County Jail to await arraignment.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in 32 New York counties after severe thunderstorms resulted in 3 deaths and thousands of power outages across parts of the state, and due to the forecast of extreme heat expected to last through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down early Sunday morning in Clark Mills, 3 people were killed from the Storms, The state of emergency exists in Broome, Chenango, Delaware & Otsego Counties locally.
Broome County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stolen rental car, where the victim stated that he had rented an SUV from Enterprise, but it had been stolen by his girlfriend, Christine Turner, who took the vehicle to Rochester and would not be returning the rental. On Friday, the missing SUV was located in Binghamton, patrols attempted a traffic stop, but Turner failed to comply, she eventually stopped & was forcibly removed from the vehicle, and her passenger, Christina Yacalis, were both placed into custody. Turner was charged with Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Obstruction of Governmental Administration & Multiple traffic violations, Yacalis was charged with Criminal Possession of Controlled Substances, both were arraigned and were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Maine Court & City of Binghamton Court.
State Police conducted an Underage Drinking Detail in Chenango County Thursday. All of the businesses checked were in compliance and did not sell alcohol to an underaged operative. Businesses that complied included area Mirabito Quickway stores, Stewarts Shops, Speedways & privately owned liquor stores in Norwich, & Sherburne. During these investigations, businesses are checked utilizing a Trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operatives who cannot lie about their age or provide a false date of birth.
The State DEC announced several proposed regulation changes to streamline use and reporting of hunting tags and provide new deer hunting opportunities. First, DEC proposes a process for using electronic carcass tags for deer, bear, and turkey. Second, DEC proposes to provide a replacement regular season deer tag to youth hunters who successfully use that tag during the Youth Big Game Hunt weekend. Otsego County Sheriff's Office has responded to the scene of a car crashing into a tree in the Village of Milford at about 1:00 PM today on State Route 28. The Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Otsego County EMS and the Milford Fire Department were currently at the scene, initial reports suggest that the car left the roadway and struck a tree. Traffic may be delayed in that area for clean up & accident reconstruction work.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is seeking the public's assistance in locating 39 year old Stephanie White, who is wanted on a probation violation. White is described as a white female, about 5'1" with brown hair & hazel eyes, anyone with information should call 607-832-5555 or go to "Submit A Tip" on the Sheriff's Office App.
The Afton Central School District closed at 11:30 this morning & all after school activities are canceled. The water in Afton was discolored or dirty, the Village of Afton Public Works Department told WCDO News that there was no water main break, but road crews using jack hammers adversely affected the quality of the water earlier today, it should clear up and there is NO order to boil water in effect.

37 year old Daniel Klenchik pleaded guilty to Tampering with a Witness in Broome County Court, he made a threatening video phone call to intimidate a victim involved in his pending criminal case, while he was incarcerated at the Broome County Jail, Klenchik will be sentenced to 2 to 4 years in New York State Prison on July 18.
State Police will be hosting a car seat check today, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at the Troop C Headquarters on State Route 7 between Sidney & Unadilla. State Police car seat technicians will check if the seat is installed properly or if there are any recalls with the current seat you have. Norwich City Police Department conducted a no-knock search warrant at 35 Pleasant Street as part of an investigation methamphetamine and fentanyl sales. 10 people were arrested on various drug & Criminal Nuisance charges. Arrested were 55 year old Todd Diamond, 66 Year old Charles Bates, 34 year old Todd Diamond, 52 year old Loreen Diamond, 27 year old Andrew Palmer, 24 year old Stephanie Donnelly, 58 year old Howard Grome, 37 year old Travis Foster, 42 year old Matthew Tiedemann & 29 year old Richard Garreau, all of Norwich. The arrests followed a months-long investigation into drug activity, investigators successfully conducted controlled purchases of the drugs, a search warrant executed Thursday which led to the discovery of a methamphetamine lab inside the home. The State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team was called in to collect hazardous materials, Norwich Fire and Codes Department condemned the property.

The investigation led Detectives to the Town of Afton, they were able to recover the stolen UTV from that location, the UTV sustained significant damage Terrell was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Mischief, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Smith was found to have a revoked driver’s license in New York State, he was processed and released & will appear in court at a later date.
