Area Congressman Richard Hanna released a statement regarding Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from traveling the United States. Hanna said that the "Call to ban Muslims from entering the United States of America is un-American, ill-advised, dangerous and shows a profound lack of understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Hanna said that he supports taking extra precautions and reforming the Visa Waiver Program to prevent terrorists from exploiting our immigration laws, & he also supported a measure in the House last month to halt the admission of refugees from Syria and Iraq until the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Director of National Intelligence certify that they do not pose a threat to our national security.”

Fishing and hunting bring a stream of cash to New York’s economy, generating the 2nd highest expenditures in any state at approximately $5 billion, according to a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Nearly two million people fish, hunt or trap in New York, Fishing is the most popular, with two-thirds of New York participants fishing exclusively, followed by 28 percent who fish and hunt and nine percent who hunt only. Nearly $1.9 billion was spent on trip-related purchases including transportation, lodging and food.
Delaware County Sheriff Tom Mills has come out in support of Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum in his call for licensed hand gun owners to carry their weapons, in case of a mass shooting like the recent one in California. Mills, Chenango Sheriff Ernest Cutting and several other sheriffs sided with Van Blarcum since last week.
Former State Senator Dean Skelos and his son Adam may find out their fate shortly as the trial in a federal courtroom in Manhattan draws to a conclusion. Skelos is accused of using his political power to get his son high paying no-show jobs in exchange for preferential treatment by the state. the jury could get the case & begin deliberations this afternoon.

Libous' attorney filed the notice of appeal Tuesday to the U.S. District Court Southern District in White Plains. Libous was sentenced to 6 months of house arrest, plus 2 years probation and a $50,000 fine, he was found guilty earlier this year of lying about using his political influence to get his son a job at a downstate law firm. The Republican lost his seat in the Senate because of the felony conviction.
The State University at Oneonta announced that 20-year-old Brandon Negron of New Windsor is no longer enrolled at the college. Negron was arrested earlier this week in connection with a threat of violence on the University campus on Yik Yak. Negron faces charges of making a terrorist threat, and aggravated harassment, following the joint investigation by University Police, Oneonta Police & State Police.

Governor Cuomo announced an agreement with state leaders on last minutes issues, as lawmakers wrap up the 2015 legislative session.

Cuomo said that the state leaders will meet with their conferences regarding these last minute issues, he said that the property tax rebates were important as many New Yorkers acknowledge that property taxes are the top reason that people look to leave the state.
State Police at Oneonta arrested 31-year-old Christopher Davis of Otego, for Criminal Trespass & Unlawfully Growing Cannabis. The arrest occurred after Troopers received a report of a man trespassing in a cabin on Washburn Road in the Town of Otego, the investigation determined that Davis had been allowed to stay a few nights at a cabin on the property, but refused to leave for over two weeks, Davis allegedly left marihuana plants that he was growing in the cabin. Davis was arraigned at the Town of Otego Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $1,500 cash bail or a $3,000 property bond.
High School Graduations and Graduation parties will be this coming weekend, and the Alcohol & drug Abuse Council of Delaware county is reminding celebrants that new York still has a zero tolerance for underage drinking of alcohol. Spokesman Justin Hamm comments:

Hamm also stated that New York has "Social Host Laws" which makes it illegal to serve alcohol in one's home to anyone less than 21 years of age.
State Police at Binghamton arrested 30 year old Shirley Rogers of Liverpool, for Felony DWI, after Troopers responded to a Broome County 911 report of a one car accident on State Route 7B in the Town of Fenton. The investigation determined that Rogers was intoxicated when she drove off the roadway and into a ditch. The arrest was a felony due to 2 prior DWI convictions. Rogers refused to submit to a test of her blood alcohol content, she was arraigned at the Town of Fenton Court and then remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set.

The funds will be awarded to 92 health and wellness providers that support approximately 400 WIC clinics across the state, reaching nearly 500,000 New Yorkers every month. This funding is administered over five years and is a combination of state and federal money. The grant awardees locally include the Broome County Health Department & Delaware Opportunities.
Another free Chenango County Rabies clinic will be held today. The clinic will run from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the firehouse in New Berlin, more information is available at 337-1673.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies, with the assistance of Bronx County Sheriff’s Deputies, arrested 31-year-old Crest Wood of the Bronx for Manslaughter and Criminally Negligent Homicide. Wood was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury, for her role in the August 21, 2014 two car, head-on collision on Cat Hollow Road in the Town of Colchester that claimed the life of 48-year-old William Sharpless of Nineveh. Wood was arraigned in Delaware County Court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility in lieu of $3000 cash bail pending further court action.
The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee announced that resources are available to help young people stay safe as graduation season gets into full swing including free toolkits to help young drivers, and a brand new website recently launched by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (NYS OASAS) that gives parents the tools to talk to their children about the risks of underage drinking. State Senate & Assembly Republicans have forwarded legislation to tighten up the restrictions on prison inmates, following the Richard Matt & David Sweat escape from the Clinton Correctional facility. Area Assemblyman Pete Lopez comments:

The “Prisoner Privileges Limitation Law” seeks to prevent the violent convicts from having unfettered access to civilians at prisons and being able to wear civilian clothing while incarcerated, it would also take away a portion of the good behavior rewards program for the most violent felons, who committed crimes such as murder and rape.
47-year-old Penny Auerbach pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of stealing money orders and cash from the U.S. Postal Service and misappropriating postal funds. The charges stemmed from an investigation by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General. Auerbach admitted to stealing over $4600 in postal funds while working at the Westford Post Office, she was sentenced to 4 years probation, will perform 500 hours of community service and was ordered to pay restitution.
The Oneonta Common Council will hold their next regular meeting tonight at city hall. The Meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in the common council chambers on the 2nd floor & it is open to the public.
The State DEC Officers and Forest Rangers issued 357 tickets for open burning-related charges during the spring statewide open burn ban, according to DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. DEC issued the tickets during the two-month burn ban that ran from March 16 through May 14th, for unattended fires, burning during the burn ban, unlawful disposal of solid waste and setting a fire that endangers the property of another. The number of tickets written this year is up 58% from 2014, many of the larger fires this spring were attributed to people violating the states burn ban, during excessively dry conditions.
The Greater Oneonta Economic Development Council announced that they would hold their next meeting on Monday June 22nd, at the Oneonta Holiday Inn at 7:00 PM. Residents of the town & city of Oneonta are encouraged to attend; the topic is the possible savings in taxes by consolidating the town of Oneonta into the City of Oneonta.

Governor Cuomo announced a crackdown on drivers and their passengers caught without a buckled seat belt or transporting unrestrained children as part of the national Click It or Ticket - Border-to-Border enforcement mobilization. The initiative will run from today through Sunday, May 31st. Currently, 91% of New York motorists buckle up, which is 4% higher than the national average. 32% of the front seat occupants killed in crashes in New York State between 2011-2013 were unrestrained.
FBI officials arrested former Congressional candidate & Minister Robert Doggart of Tennessee in connection with a plot to kill Muslim community residents in the town of Hancock. FBI officials arrested Doggart, back on April 10th. The complaint filed in federal court Doggart planned to commit mass murder using an M4 rifle, explosives, machete and snipers. Doggart was released after posting bail, and faces federal court action shortly.
Voters in New York State will decide on their area school district budgets, school board seats, building & bus propositions on Tuesday. School board races will be decided in Sidney, Delhi, Bainbridge-Guilford, & Norwich. Building projects will be voted on in Sidney, Walton, & Unadilla Valley.
Friday’s declared mistrial in Schoharie County Court ion the Cal Harris murder trial, likely means a 4th trial, which may bring the case back in court in August. The most recent trial was the longest of the Harris Trials at 11 weeks; it featured 11 days of deliberation with a hung jury, and 14 requests for a mistrial By Harris' defense attorney since the 3rd trial began in February. Harris was convicted twice in Tioga County Court, both were overturned on appeal, the 3rd trial and the next trial are in Schoharie county court after a change of venue was granted.

This arrest occurred after Troopers responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a single motor vehicle accident on State Route 23 in the Town of Harpersfield. An investigation determined that he was driving while intoxicated when he crashed into the guiderail and then a ditch. Helmer was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Harpersfield Court on May 25th.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is announcing legislation to remove legal barriers to adoption by lesbian, gay and transgender parents. Gillibrand will introduce legislation this week that would prohibit the discrimination, The "Every Child Deserves a Family Act" would prohibit any entity that receives federal funds from discriminating against adoptive or foster parents based on sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status. New York is 1 of 7 states that explicitly bans adoption discrimination based on sexual orientation. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Michigan prohibit same-sex couples from jointly adopting, 4 other states restrict same-sex couples from using the second-parent adoption process.
New York’s IDA’s provided $660 million in net tax exemptions in 2013, up $105 million from 2012 but estimated job gains were nearly 23,000 lower than the previous year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report found that, despite this weakening growth in jobs, the state’s 109 active IDA's provided $1.38 billion in total tax exemptions in 2013. The exemptions were partially offset by $723 million in payments-in-lieu of taxes, leaving the total net exemptions for the year at $660 million – an increase of $105 million, or 19% from 2012. DiNapoli has also renewed his call for improvements to IDA oversight and accountability. A copy of the report is available at osc.state.ny.us.

New York collected $149.1 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2014-15, an increase of $11.4 billion, or 8.3% from the prior year, largely because of one-time financial settlements and a boost in federal aid, according to a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The state collected more than $71 billion in taxes, Business tax collections of $8.5 billion. The state received $48.6 billion in federal grants, which were used primarily for Medicaid, homeland security, public welfare and education.
The Sidney Center Improvement Group is hosting their annual Spring Street Team Cleanup Day this weekend on May 16th. The Group is looking for volunteers to help with cleaning the streets of trash and light debris in and around the Hamlet; they will provide free t-shirts, a full lunch, prizes and all cleanup supplies. This weekend, clocks get pushed ahead 1 hour as part of Daylight Savings Time, & the Firemen’s Association of New York urges all New Yorkers to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure that they are functioning properly. the Association recommends cleaning all alarms to remove any debris that might impede their function and to change batteries. The murder trial of Cal Harris will continue in Schoharie County Court, after Judge George Bartlett ruled against a defense motion for a mistrial following yesterday's opening statements by the prosecution. Harris has been convicted twice before for the murder of Michelle Harris in Tioga County Court, both convictions were overturned on appeal, & the 3rd trial was moved to Schoharie County.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office & Norwich Police executed a “no knock” search warrant Thursday at 12 Mechanic Street in Norwich, following an investigation of heroin and narcotics sales. 27-year-old Jason Sigler of Norwich was charged with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Nuisance, he was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail. 50-year-old Patricia Manwarren of Norwich was charged with Criminal Nuisance, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, with more charges pending, she was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail. 39-year-old Michael Hackett was found to be in possession of marihuana and issued an appearance ticket to appear in the City of Norwich Court at a later date. The Sheriff’s Office recovered cocaine, prescription pills, marihuana, digital scales, and Baggies during the search.
State Police arrested 47-year-old Jason Bush of Deposit for Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, Criminal Mischief & Harassment. The arrest occurred after Troopers responded to a request to check the welfare of a woman at a residence on County Route 20 in Deposit, where Bush allegedly kicked, punched, choked & threw her phone so that she could not contact police. Bush faces court action Monday.

The Oneonta Police Department responded to the Tanning Bed at 76 Chestnut Street for a report of a patron discovering another patron filming them inside of a private tanning room. 31 year old Christopher Demarco of Otego is accused of using his cell phone to film another patron getting undressed, Demarco was charged with Unlawful Surveillance, he is being held pending arraignment in City of Oneonta Court.
