The Otsego County Health Department announced that a Gray Fox has tested positive for rabies. The State DEC collected the fox from the Town of Otsego on September 9th, it was held until tested this week, there were no animal or human exposures. Otsego County Health officials remind residents to get their pets & farm animals vaccinated for rabies, more information is available at 607-547-4230.


The City of Oneonta has opened the municipal lots for parking in anticipation of tonight's/tomorrow's winter weather event. Please remember that anytime there is more than 2 1/2" of snow, vehicles must be removed from City streets. Parking is available in the following lots: 27 Market St Lot, Westcott Lot, Wall Street Lot, Dietz Street Lot and in Damaschke Field.


The Annual Holiday visit by the Toys for Tots Train is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th, at the Walnut Street crossing in Bainbridge. The train is anticipated to arrive at 1:00 pm on the 14th.

49 year old Keith Audette of Hamden pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court Tuesday, Audette admitted that he had been previously convicted of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated in Chenango County in 2015, he also admitted that he drove a motor vehicle in the Village of Walton on April 9th while under the influence of methamphetamine. Audette is expected to be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, and his license will be revoked, he will also be required to pay any fines and surcharges imposed by the Court.


The Great American Smoke-Out is today nationwide, to help people quit smoking tobacco for one day, in the hope that they keep it going beyond today. The Chenango County Health Department encourages individuals who use nicotine/tobacco products to participate in the Great American Smoke-Out. A variety of treatments are available, people can call the New York State Quit-line at 1-866-NY-QUITS, go to nysmokefree.com, or cdc.gov/tobacco


A check for $4,000 was presented by the Rotary Club of Cooperstown to support a partnership between Bassett Healthcare Network’s Cancer Institute and the Cooperstown Food Pantry that delivers free food to cancer patients in need across the region. The matching grant, made up of a $2,000 grant from Central New York Rotary and a $2,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Cooperstown, will help the program continue. The Cooperstown Food Pantry, located at 25 Church Street, & currently serves between 45 to 50 households.

Bassett Healthcare Network announced the elimination of around 100 positions, the majority were administrative. Patient care would not be affected by the layoffs, which represent 2% of their total workforce.


On Saturday, from 10 am. to 2 pm. the Norwich City Police Department will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event. The DEA and Norwich Police will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs, they can NOT accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The Norwich collection will be at the rear of the City of Norwich Police Department at 18 East Main Street, Norwich. Garnier was arraigned at Delhi Town Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional facility without bail.


A Delaware County Grand Jury returned a 4-count indictment against 41 year old Darcee Lewis of Oxford, for 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and 2 counts of Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia. On August 14th, a search warrant was executed by the Village of Sidney Police Based on information provided by State Parole Officers, they located narcotics and drug paraphernalia, Lewis is accused of possessing methamphetamine, fentanyl with intent to sell, as well as scales, loaded needles, and packaging materials. Lewis was arraigned & was remanded on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.


32 year old Evan Middleton of Johnson City, was sentenced today as a Second time Felony Offender to 12 years in State Prison followed by 3 years post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance On April 6, 2023, after the execution of a narcotics search warrant at Middleton's residence at 58 Massachusetts Ave in Johnson City, Middleton was found to be in possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine, with the intent to sell.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Whitney Bachanas of Milford woman for animal cruelty after Deputies responded to County Highway 35 in the Town of Milford for a welfare check. Bachanas was charged with Abandonment of Animals, Failure to provide proper sustenance, Deputies located several animals abandoned, malnourished and mistreated. 2 emaciated dogs in critical condition were transported to Cornell University animal hospital. A 3rd dog was located deceased as well as a turkey and a quail. 2 quail were rescued for foster and rehabilitation. The Susquehanna SPCA, Cornell University and Farm Friends Network assisted in this rescue and investigation. Bachanas was issued appearance tickets and is set to appear in court at a later date.

Bainbridge Firefighters responded to a blaze at 104 County Route 38 shortly after Midnight last night. Bainbridge Fire Chief Fred Bell told WCDO News the the house was not occupied, & was completely destroyed, Bainbridge was assisted by firefighters from Masonville, Sidney, Coventry, Guilford, Mount Upton & Afton, there were no injuries reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.


The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that the County's #5 Most Wanted Fugitive was arrested in the Town of Union. 42 year old Matthew Knapp of Kirkwood was tracked down by the Warrants Division & was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility. Knapp had been on the run since May 16th, when he absconded from probation for a Sex Offender Registration Violation, as he failed to update his address with the State Sex Offender Registry Under the Sex Offender Registration Act.

Governor Hochul signed legislation to add new 28 judges across the state to reduce the case backlog in family and civil courts. Locally, the new legislation will create a new judge position in Chenango County, with an expedited election process to fill the position. Currently the county is served by Chenango County Judge Frank Revoir, for criminal, family and surrogate court matters.


The State Labor Department reported that the number of private sector jobs in the State increased over the month by 0.1%, to 8,379,000 in June. The State's unemployment rate held steady at 4.2% in June, the statewide labor force participation rate held constant at 61.3%.


53 Baseball Hall of Fame members are expected to return to Cooperstown this weekend as they induct 2024 electees Adrian Beltré, Todd Helton, Jim Leyland and Joe Mauer into the Hall of Fame. The Class of 2024 will be inducted on Sunday at the Clark Sports Center beginning at 1:30 PM, it will air live on MLB Network.


A benefit fundraiser for Finnegan Hunter will be held at General Clinton Park Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. "Finn" was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia last year, he will require Chemotherapy & a bone marrow transplant to treat the aggressive cancer. The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that 34 year old Veronica Mitchell of Endicott, was located by their Warrants Division, with the assistance of the Binghamton Police Department, State Parole, and State Police Violent Felony Warrant Division. Mitchell was found at a residence on Day Hollow Road in the Town of Owego, hiding in a storage room, she was arrested and transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility. Mitchell was wanted regarding felony drug and weapon possession charges and was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Governmental Administration, she will be arraigned in the Town of Owego Court at a later date.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 41 year old Shaliek Varra of Otego following a traffic stop on February 26, in the Town of Otego. Varra was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation or a motor vehicle, speeding & other related charges, he was issued an Appearance ticket and will appear in Otego Court at a later date.


The State DEC announced the dates for this year's Burn Ban. The statewide ban on brush burning starts on Saturday March 16th & runs until May 14th, more information is available at the state DEC website.

Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that 23 year old Souley Pertilla-Camara of Binghamton was arrested in Orlando, Florida. Pertilla-Camara was wanted by Binghamton City Police for the shooting of Lamont Weaver on June 17, 2023, where Weaver sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and survived, he was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Pertilla-Camara will be returned to Broome County shortly.

The Vestal Police Department arrested 43 year old Lori Littler of Vestal on a variety of drug charges. Members of the police department executed a search warrant at Littler’s residence, they seized methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, suboxone, plus Packaging materials & Scales, Littler was remanded to the Broome County Jail to await arraignment.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 23 year old Lucian Decker of Pittsfield, for 2nd degree Assault with a weapon, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, plus he was wanted on 2 warrants. Decker was arrested following an investigation into an assault in the Town of Morris on April 7 2022, where he allegedly struck the victim in the head with a lead pipe after an argument, Decker fled the scene & left the state, earlier this month, deputies learned that Decker was back in the area, and was involved in another incident that is still under investigation. Decker was located in the Town of Pittsfield and was taken into custody without incident, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $3,000 cash bail/$30,000 secured bond.


The Broome County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a one-person motorcycle accident with injuries on Interstate Route 81 South between Exits 1 and 2 in the Town of Kirkwood Tuesday. The initial investigation revealed that the motorcyclist was the only individual involved and speed was a factor in the crash. The motorcyclist was transported to Wilson Hospital with serious injuries.


Governor Hochul announced that $20 million in state funding has been awarded to 7 counties and New York City to improve public safety and emergency communications. The funding can be used to install new equipment, enhance public safety radio systems, Locally, Chenango County will get $3 million in funding for a 25 digital radio system to bring multiple agencies into a single radio system.


The Broome County Sheriff’s Office and SUNY Broome have partnered on a program to begin introducing community college “life skills” curriculum to incarcerated men and women at the Broome County Correctional Facility. The pilot program consists of five, 1-hour weekly classes taking place over five weeks, offered in both a male and a female housing pod. Undersheriff Sam Davis is the instructor for each class, he previously served as the Director of Training for the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and taught several criminal justice courses at SUNY Broome over the past 8 years.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 31 year old Shean Seeley of Otego following an investigation of alleged child abuse. Seeley was charged with 3 counts of acting in a Manor to Injure a Child less than 17 years of age, and 2 counts of Reckless Endangerment after a hotline report received by Otsego County Child Protective Services. Seeley is accused of routinely acting in a manner that exposed his children to risk of serious physical injury, he was released on his own recognizance to appear in Otego Town Court on a later date.


Bassett Healthcare Network and Helios Care recently announced a collaboration to provide hospice and palliative care to patients in Central New York. Helios Care President & CEO Dan Ayres visited WCDO this morning & explained that there has been confusion about the arrangement, and the Helios Care remains as a separate entity from Bassett:

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $325 million in grants is available for clean water infrastructure projects through the next round of the State's Water Infrastructure Improvement and Inter-municipal Grant programs. Governor Hochul is directing EFC to increase water infrastructure grants for small rural communities from 25 percent to 50 percent of net eligible project costs, Municipalities can request a meeting, register for upcoming webinars, and learn more at efc.ny.gov/cat.

Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Josephine Shutters of Westford for Aggravated DWI & Failure to keep right, following a motor vehicle accident on January 5, in the Town of Maryland. Shutters was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Maryland Town Court at a later date.


The Broome County Martin Luther King Junior Commission will be holding their annual March THIS evening, starting at the MLK Promenade behind Boscov’s in downtown Binghamton. The commission announced that they have resumed their scholarship program, they will give out 2 scholarships for $1,000 each for high school graduates this year. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar has approved the latest Redistricting plan for the County, a previous plan was thrown out after a court challenge.

Bassett Healthcare Network has instituted temporary masking requirements across all its facilities per COVID-19 safety guidelines. All patients, visitors, employees, students, and volunteers are now required to wear medical-grade masks across all Bassett campuses, outpatient clinics, school-based health centers, administrative offices, Masks will be available at entrances. The mandatory masking requirement will be reassessed in 1 week. As Bassett's employees continue to have a higher number of COVID cases above their threshold.

Hundreds of NYSEG customers were still without power this afternoon, in the WCDO listening area, due to last night's storms with high winds leading to downed tree limbs & power lines, over 2400 customers were without power early this morning, the number was about 370 this afternoon, crews will continue to work until all the power is restored


The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Tyler Culver of Otego following the execution of a search warrant on Saturday. Culver faces multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Last Fall, members of the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office and Oneonta Police Department initiated a joint investigation in to the suspected sales of narcotics from Culver's residence in the Village of Otego, on Saturday, with the assistance of the State Police, a search warrant was executed & they seized suspected narcotics & packaging materials, he was also arrested in connection with a shooting incident Saturday In Otego, remains in the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment on the narcotics charges.
