State Police are looking to identify an individual described as a white female with shoulder length blond hair, driving a white 4 door late model sedan. The suspect is accused of going through a vehicle while it was parked at Animal Adventure Park near Colesville on October 16 and taking money, credit cards and checks. The suspect's picture was obtained when she attempted to cash a check using the victim’s identification at the NBT Bank in Syracuse. Anyone with information should call State Police at 775-1241; photos have been posted at the State Police Troop C web page.
The Delaware County Board of Supervisors passed their 103 million dollar budget at their meeting Wednesday in Delhi. The tax levy increase was held to about 1.4%, the board also approved of forming the substance Abuse Prevention Task Force which will include members of several County Agencies to try to combat the ongoing Heroin & Opioid problem.
The Autopsy performed on 50 year old Wade Bostwick of Milford showed that he died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Bostwick was found dead in his home after firefighters responded to a fire at his Center Street Milford Address last Saturday afternoon.
The State Department of Taxation and Finance announced more than 62,000 payments worth more than $46.6 million have been made through its convenient Quick Pay application since the beginning of 2018. The free service provides individuals a way to promptly pay a tax bill or debt owed from an audit or collection case, or as part of an installment payment agreement. Two people were injured when a Pickup Truck & Oneonta City School Bus collided Monday afternoon at route 8 & Country Club Road. The driver of the pickup, 35 year old Benjamin Goodwin of Laurens was ticketed for running a red light, the unidentified bus driver & a driver’s aid suffered minor injuries in the crash & were taken to Fox Hospital, 3 children on the bus were not injured.
Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig is expected to ask the Oneonta Common Council to re-name the Oneonta Municipal Airport in honor of former Oneonta Mayor & Businessman Sam Nader at their December 4th meeting. Nader rallied to have an airport established when he was mayor of Oneonta in the 60's.
The National Baseball Hall Of Fame & Museum will celebrate the Boston Red Sox’s 2018 World Series championship through Autumn Glory, the annual tribute to the World Series Champions in Cooperstown. The exhibit is now open, it features artifacts from the Red Sox, including a bat used by World Series MVP Steve Pearce, A jersey worn by David Price, Game-worn glasses used by Joe Kelly, a Hoodie worn by Red Sox manager Alex Cora in Game 5 & a Helmet worn by Brock Holt. The Autumn Glory display will be up through the conclusion of the 2019 Major League Baseball postseason.
The State DEC is continuing with their investigation into the shooting deaths of 8 deer & the injury of a 9th one, in Otsego County last week in the town of Milford. So far, no arrests have been made.
The Bainbridge Glow Gun Held at General Clinton Park raised over $5400 for Bainbridge native Bob Jinks. Money was raised at the event, plus through a local Bottle & can Drive, the amount raised was 270% above the initial goal, according to organizer Heather Bucalos of Sidney.
State Police Superintendent George Beach announced the line of duty death of Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand this morning. Trooper VanNostrand was reporting to work at the State Police barracks in Fonda when he was involved in a motor vehicle crash at about 7:45 AM. The investigation revealed that Trooper VanNostrand was stopped in traffic in his personal vehicle, waiting to turn into the station, when he was rear-ended and pushed into oncoming traffic; he was transported to Albany Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. Trooper VanNostrand served with the State Police for 6 years, he is survived by his wife & daughter, and funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
Sidney town officials announced that there will be a public open house at the new Town Facilities at 44 Grand Street in the village of Sidney this Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Tours of the Sidney Historical Society Museum will also be held, all are welcome to attend.
The Otsego County Health Department announced that a skunk has tested positive for rabies in Burlington Flats. 1 unvaccinated dog was exposed to the rabid skunk & will be euthanized, the next Otsego County Rabies clinic will be December 5th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Susquehanna Animal Shelter.
Attorney General Barbara Underwood released the annual "Pennies for Charity: Where Your Money Goes; Fundraising by Professional Fundraisers" report, which found that nearly 1/3rd of charitable donations ended up in the pockets of professional fundraisers. In 2017, more than $1.18 billion was raised in New York State through 964 fundraising campaigns conducted by professional fundraisers on behalf of charities. The report and the searchable Pennies for Charity database containing the underlying data is posted at www.CharitiesNYS.com.
The Binghamton Devils today announced they will be holding a the “Put the Biscuit in the Basket” food drive starting on Wednesday and running until Saturday, December 15, benefitting CHOW. Governor Cuomo today announced six projects are being funded under the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative in Oneonta. The six programs include Communication Across Barriers, Opportunities for Otsego, CDO Workforce, the Oneonta School District, Family Planning of South Central New York, & the Otsego County Drug Court. The money is part of a broader $25 million effort to target pockets of poverty around the state.
State Police arrested 2 people after a traffic stop on I-88 in Worcester. A trooper observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and initiated a traffic stop. After an investigation both the operator and passenger were arrested after drugs and paraphernalia were found in the vehicle. 30 year old Zachary Lushkevich of Laurens was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, 26 year old Katarina Lushkevich of Laurens was arrested for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, they were released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Worcester Court on October 30th.
Tajiri the giraffe, who was born at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, will not be going to be heading to a new wildlife facility in North Carolina. Animal Adventure officials announced on Saturday that "requirements and deadlines were not satisfied" on time for Tajiri's transfer, instead, they announced that Construction starts today on a new building to house Tajiri at Animal Adventure, the project is expected to be completed in 3 to 4 weeks.
Democratic incumbent US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will debate Republican opponent Chele Farley Thursday in New York City. A debate had been scheduled for Sunday sponsored by Spectrum's New York City News channel; it was cancelled after Gillibrand refused to cross picket lines at Spectrum’s parent company Charter Communications. A debate between Gillibrand & Farley will be held at WABC-TV in New York City on Thursday, at 1:30 p.m.
Author Gray Basnight of Bethel New York has published his 3rd book, “Flight Of The Fox” a mystery thriller that takes place in Upstate New York, & is tied in to the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Arts festival in Bethel in 1969. Basnight told WCDO about his novel:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 47 year old Eric Palmatier of Harpersfield for cruelty to animals & failure to provide proper food and sustenance. Deputies allege that Palmatier failed to provide food, water, shelter and veterinary care for a dog; he was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at the Harpersfield Town Court at a later date.
The Sidney Village Police department is investigating a 1 Vehicle Crash into the China Buffet Building at about 12:19 PM this afternoon. Police reported that a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling westbound in the McDonald's Parking Lot, when the unidentified Driver drove up the embankment & went into the exterior wall of the Restaurant, causing a hole in the wall. The accident is still under investigation.
Several Otsego County Fire companies responded to a fire at 4703 Route 28 in Hartwick Seminary Sunday. The fire was reported at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, 7 people were left homless, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
State Police arrested 29 year old Kody Weidman of New Berlin for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and Failure to Use an Interlock Device. Troopers observed Weidman commit a traffic violation while at State Route 20 and State Route 8, he attempted to elude troopers by turning into a driveway and turning off his headlights, troopers uncovered several grams of cocaine. Weidman was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Bridgewater Court on November 5th.
State Police arrested 38 year old David Miller of Pitcher for 4 counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Troopers were advised on September 2, 2018 that Miller was in possession of several stolen road signs. Miller was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Pitcher Court on November 6th.

After an investigation, it was determined that Page menaced Meade and other people with a shotgun after he drove to her residence and recklessly drove on her lawn, almost striking her vehicle. Page was arraigned in the town of Colesville Court and released on her own recognizance. Meade was arraigned in the town of Kirkwood and also released on his own recognizance.

State Attorney General Barbara Underwood announced that following her office’s investigation into rent-to-own Practices of the Manufactured Home Park industry, 8 have
agreed to major reforms of their practices. As part of the settlement, the owners must reimburse tenants for any down payments and other costs expended and allowing
tenants to rescind their Option to Purchase Agreement. Locally, JKLM Communities of Oneonta, who own the Valley Stream Trailer Park in Oneonta, has agreed to
discontinue rent-to-own practices found to be unlawful, the Attorney General’s office will continue to work with the New York Housing Association and its members to
reform practices for the benefit of manufactured home park tenants throughout the state.
New York State’s unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in September 2018, reaching its lowest level since June 1988, according to preliminary figures released by the State
Department of Labor. The biggest job gains were in the fields of Educational & Health Services; Leisure & Hospitality & Construction.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18-year-old Devon Dority of Hamden for Menacing and Attempted Assault. Dority is accused of attempting to cause physical
injury by throwing a knife at a person during a domestic dispute. Dority was arraigned at Hamden Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000
bail. Dority is scheduled to appear at Hamden Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.
The Oneonta Police Department announced that their 8th annual Food Drive is now underway. Donations may be dropped off at the Oneonta Police Department anytime
between until Friday, November 9th. Accepted Donations include non-perishable food items or toiletries. Proceeds will go to needy families in our community.

A trooper on patrol was on the lookout for a vehicle operating erratically, a description was provided. The trooper was able to observe the vehicle in the town of Hancock unable to maintain a lane. A traffic stop was initiated and Myers was arrested, he was also found to be in possession of THC wax. He was released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Hancock Court on October 22.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18-year-old Devon Dority of Hamden for Menacing and Attempted Assault. Dority is accused of attempting to cause physical
injury by throwing a knife at a person during a domestic dispute. Dority was arraigned at Hamden Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000
bail. Dority is scheduled to appear at Hamden Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

State Police at Deposit are investigating a fatal industrial accident at the loading dock at the Courier Printing Corporation in Deposit. The deceased has been identified as 66 year old William Sethmann of Deposit, who was working as an independent contractor and handyman at Courier; he was located crushed underneath a hydraulic loading dock. The investigation revealed that Sethmann was working on the lift when it failed sometime between Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. There are no signs of foul play.
19-year-old Alexander Wetzel was reported missing Tuesday, the SUNY Broome student was found by Binghamton Police Wednesday, SUNY Broome officials announced their condolences to Wetzel's family on their website today. Grief Counselors are available for students & staff following the announcement of Wetzel's death. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

Chenango County Sheriff's Department investigated a robbery Tuesday Night on Royal Avenue in the Town of Norwich, after a male victim went to Chenango Memorial Hospital with missing teeth, head lacerations and additional trauma. The investigation revealed that the victim was lured to the Royal Avenue address by 19 year old Jade Orlando, who requested marihuana to be delivered to her, Brenden Gager, Hunter Speenburgh and Landon Cummings were hiding nearby, they allegedly assaulted and robbed the victim. All 4 were arrested & were charged with Robbery & Assault; they were arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility. The City of Norwich Police Department assisted with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.

69 year old Diane Wood of Sherburne has been identified as the person killed in a fire in Sherburne Wednesday. Area Firefighters fought the blaze at 605 Glanville Hill-Hardscrabble Road for about 6 hours, the house was fully engulfed by the time fire fighters arrived after a passerby called it in. the cause of the fire has not yet been determined & the investigation is continuing.
The Broome County Sheriff's Department announced that 17-year-old Ali Masland was found safe Thursday, the developmentally challenged teen had been reported missing from her residence in the Town of Chenango late Wednesday afternoon. No further details have been released.

A judge has denied a motion by ex-Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver regarding his bail request, pending the appeal of his corruption conviction and seven-year prison term. U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni has denied Silver's request Monday, she stated that the substance of Silver's appeal lacks merit, and the sole purpose of the request was to stall Silver starting his prison term on October 5th. Silver was sentenced to 12 years in prison after his first conviction in 2015, that conviction was overturned after the U.S. Supreme Court redefined the boundaries of public corruption, then a 2nd jury convicted him
earlier this year, for taking $5 million illegally by using his political power for personal gain.

Governor Cuomo today announced that the New York National Guard is preparing to send 10 soldiers and two UH-60 Blackhawk Medivac Helicopters with 30 days of medical supplies to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina to assist with response and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Florence. 50 additional Airmen have also been deployed from the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard. The state's incident management team is also ready to assist with response and recovery efforts including command and control, planning, logistics and administration activities, operational coordination, obtaining situational information and reporting, incident action planning, GIS mapping, and logistical support for ongoing response operations. 100 additional National Guard Members are on standby.

The State DOT has notified the City of Oneonta staff that a consultant contracted by DOT will perform a “peak-hour turn-movement study” at the Main Street intersection with the James F. Lettis Highway, beginning next Wednesday, and continuing around the clock for several days. The study’s duration will depend upon weather conditions. Video cameras, which will be mounted on 20-foot-tall poles, will be installed at the intersection on Tuesday; NYSDOT officials emphasized that cameras will record only movements of metal objects, and are not capable of identifying pedestrians, motorists, specific vehicles, or license plates.

28 year old Devan Ellsworth will have his case come up before a Chenango County grand Jury shortly. Ellsworth is accused of assaulting his 20-month-old daughter, who died the following day. He is charged with 2nd-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, Police & 1st Responders were called to Ellsworth's apartment on Henry Street in Norwich & found the child with a head injury; she was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she died. Additional charges are expected to be filed against Ellsworth following the release of the Autopsy that was conducted at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, Ellsworth is being held at the Chenango County Jail.

Governor Cuomo announced today legislation has been signed to extend the period for workers and volunteers to file a Notice of Participation for lost wage and medical benefits as a result of their involvement in the recovery and clean-up operations after 9/11. Previously, the Governor signed legislation on September 11, 2016 to extend the period for individuals to register under the World Trade Center Disability Law through midnight tonight, the new bill extends the deadline until September 11, 2022.
Weather has slowed down the progress on the Main Street Sidney railroad crossing project. Sidney Superintendent of Public Works Mike Mercurio told WCDO news today that the paving part of the project, is now slated to wrap up Thursday morning, weather permitting.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 43 year old Christopher Candanedo of Queens for False Personation, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, after a traffic stop on County Highway 16 in the Town of Delhi. During the traffic stop Candanedo had given Deputy’s a false date of birth, which further investigation revealed that his driving privileges had been revoked. Candanedo was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash/$2,000 secured bond.

Deputies allege that Acevedo was operating a motor vehicle in the Town of Delhi in an impaired condition at a high rate of speed. Acevedo was also issued multiple traffic summons for speeding, uninspected motor vehicle and failure to change address. Acevedo was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.
State Senator Jim Seward announced $30,000 in state grant funding for the West Oneonta Volunteer Fire Department. The monies will be used to help with the cost of an omni-directional alert & voice mass notification system. The new equipment replaces an obsolete system which was over sixty years old.

Legendary local canoeist Al Camp of Otego passed away at the age of 89, Camp was one of the originators of the New York Marathon Canoe racing Association, he won the 1969 General Clinton Canoe Regatta pro Race with Jim Root, and he was an original 700 mile club member & finishing 18 times. Camp also started Camp Paddles & Canoes and designed the original bent shaft wooden paddle; he also raced in Quebec, Michigan, and other races around the country & was inducted in 2013 into the General Clinton Canoe Regatta Hall Of Fame, and at that time, he told WCDO about the importance of family & friendship:

Rather than going on trial, 37 year old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey pleaded guilty In Broome County Court today to attempted aggravated assault on a police officer. Giacalone hit a trooper with his vehicle in January after a chase through Binghamton's South Side, The trooper shot Giacalone in the face. Giacalone accepted a plea deal that he had previously rejected; he will be sentenced to 12 years in prison upon sentencing in November.
Governor Cuomo directed the State DEC to come up with new regulations to phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons, which is a group of potent greenhouse gas pollutants used in a wide variety of applications. The regulations would prohibit specific substances for use in new consumer products, including aerosol propellants, commercial and residential food refrigeration equipment, commercial air-conditioning equipment, light-duty vehicle air-conditioning and foam-blowing agents. The phase out, which would be implemented from 2020-2024, the DEC will be seeking input on this proposal prior to proceeding with a formal rulemaking, with the intent of finalizing a rule in 2019.

Toxic blooms of Algae have been reported in 81 lakes and ponds across New York state, according to the state DEC. The 17 new entries were added to the list in the past week, including in the Finger Lakes region. DEC Officials said that September is the peak season for blooms, most of which are harmless to humans; however certain types produce toxins that can kill dogs. The DEC lists the toxic blooms at dec.ny.gov.
Delaware Sheriff Craig DuMond welcomed State Senator James Seward at the Delaware County Sheriff's Office today, where Seward announced a $25,000 State Grant for the Department. Sheriff Dumond said that they will be using the grant to purchase a vehicle to be used by an Investigator in the Criminal Investigations Division.
The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce announced that TEDxOneonta will host a “Ted” talk event Friday night at the Goodrich Theater at the SUNY Oneonta campus. A variety of topics will be covered, tickets are available at tedxoneonta.com.
20 year old Michael Roque pleaded guilty Friday for the 2nd degree murder of Binghamton University student Joao (Joe-Ow) Souza. Roque fatally stabbed Souza in his Binghamton University dorm in April. Roque is scheduled to be sentenced on November 16.
State Police arrested 21 year old Christopher DeGrazio of Pelham, NY for DWI with a BAC of .15%. Troopers were dispatched to a vehicle that was disabled in town of Colchester, they found DeGrazio sleeping in the driver’s seat, blocking the road to Russell Brook Campground. DeGrazio was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Colchester Court. He was then turned over to a sober third party.
Fire Fighters responded to a call at A.O. Fox Hospital – Tri-Town Campus on Pearl Street in Sidney at approximately 1:00 PM Friday afternoon regarding smoke. The building was evacuated and it was later determined that a line supplying the cooling system had a crack in it and was spraying coolant into the Laboratory Department, which created a smoke-like reaction that led to an evacuation. No injuries were reported. All care services are back to operating normally.

Rather than going on trial, 37 year old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey pleaded guilty In Broome County Court today to attempted aggravated assault on a police officer. Giacalone hit a trooper with his vehicle in January after a chase through Binghamton's South Side, The trooper shot Giacalone in the face. Giacalone accepted a plea deal that he had previously rejected; he will be sentenced to 12 years in prison upon sentencing in November.
Governor Cuomo directed the State DEC to come up with new regulations to phase out the use of hydrofluorocarbons, which is a group of potent greenhouse gas pollutants used in a wide variety of applications. The regulations would prohibit specific substances for use in new consumer products, including aerosol propellants, commercial and residential food refrigeration equipment, commercial air-conditioning equipment, light-duty vehicle air-conditioning and foam-blowing agents. The phase out, which would be implemented from 2020-2024, the DEC will be seeking input on this proposal prior to proceeding with a formal rulemaking, with the intent of finalizing a rule in 2019.
