The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September, The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in September 2024. Locally, Chenango County had 2.7% unemployment, Delaware County 3.2% & Otsego County had 2.9% in September.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 48 year old Noel Wildey following an execution of an eviction in the Town of Masonville. Last Wednesday, members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Civil Division were conducting an eviction at a residence in the Town of Masonville, where Wildey failed to provide his proper name and date of birth, giving several false names, it was discovered that Wildey had an active Arrest Warrant out of the State of Pennsylvania. Wildey was charged on the warrant & for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Obstruction of Governmental Administration, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to for arraignment.

The new mixed-use building was constructed on an underutilized parking lot on Dietz Street and now hosts not only the Hartwick Baking Innovation Lab, but also 64 units of affordable and below market rate housing. The project received $1,470,000 in funding from the City’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award.

Several Fire Companies responded to a barn fire on County Route 22 in Smyrna Sunday morning. Several animals died in the fire, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Early Sunday, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fatal, 1 car motor vehicle accident on State Highway 23 in the Town of Davenport, that claimed the life of a Davenport resident. An investigation revealed that at approximately 1:03AM, 18 year old Jayden Aviles of Tarrytown was traveling Eastbound on State Highway 23, he was unable to maintain control of the vehicle on a curve, left the roadway, crashing into a private home, 2 sleeping people in the home were seriously injured, 34 year old Larry Vankeuren succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. This investigation is ongoing.
Norwich Police Department attempted to stop an UTV Saturday afternoon that was illegally driving on Mitchell Street in the City of Norwich. 22 year old Michael Bliss of New Berlin was charged with DWI and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Bliss is accused of trying to flee officer, Bliss flipped his UTV at the Rexford Street bridge as he tried to turn onto State Highway 23.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office aims to create a safer, more understanding environment for interactions between law enforcement and individuals and families with autism, by unveiling the “Blue Envelope Program,” a first-in-New-York-State initiative aimed at easing communication and preventing misunderstandings between individuals with autism and law enforcement during interactions like traffic stops or during an emergency. Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 61 year old James Clapper of Norwich after a Sex Abuse Investigation. Last Thursday , Clapper was charged with Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, 1st degree Rape, Incest, Sexual Abuse and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Clapper is accused of performing sexual acts with a juvenile female victim, he was processed and arraigned & he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility with no bail until he can be arraigned in Chenango County Court.
Binghamton Police are investigating a fatal shooting early Saturday morning at The North Side Deli on Chenango Street, officers were made aware that a male had arrived at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds, was provided with emergency surgery and died several hours later. The identity of the victim is not being released at this time.

The City of Oneonta Fire and Police Departments continue to investigate a fire that occurred at 47 Chestnut Street Thursday afternoon. Oneonta Firefighters located the fire in a second-floor street-side bedroom and quickly brought it under control. It was then discovered that what is believed to be gasoline had been present in the room, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire. The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Jason Stevenson, the investigation indicated that Stevenson ignited what is believed to be gasoline inside the bedroom before taking his own life with a firearm, and the investigation is continuing.
State Police arrested 32 year old Jacob Ritchie of Bainbridge for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after Troopers initiated a traffic stop on State Route 7. Ritchie has a suspended driver’s license, he failed a Field Sobriety Test & was arrested. 2 passengers, 46 year old Marc Kimble of Smyrna and 42 year old Cricket Miller of Norwich, were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, all 3 were issued appearance tickets to the Bainbridge Town Court on October 21st.
19 year old Qualem Hernandez of Binghamton, was sentenced Friday in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 5 years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty in June to Criminal Possession of a weapon. Hernandez opened fire in April at a group of 4 individuals on Susquehanna Street in the City of Binghamton, Binghamton Police were able to identify Hernandez from surveillance cameras when he fled the scene, while still in possession of the firearm.

The Sidney Village Board met last night, & there were questions regarding an additional charge added to the water bill starting September 1st. Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News that the village had to find a new water source after years of manganese in the old supply, and was ordered by the DEC to correct the problem, there was state money & loans available to help pay for it, which led to the rate increase:

Baker said that they hope to have the new well for the village on line by the end of the year, he said that anyone who would like more information can contact the Sidney village office & set up a meeting with him & others involved in the project.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 54 year old Stephen Kiss of Davenport for Criminal Contempt and Harassment following an Order of Protection Violation incident, in the Town of Davenport. On August 14th, Deputies responded to the Charlotte Creek Mobile Home Park, Deputies found that the victim had been harassed by Kiss while an order of protection was in place, On August 19th, Deputies arrested Kiss, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.

There are a variety of messages these scammers will send to get you to click on a link & that will lead to the hackers retrieving information, such as account usernames and passwords, Social Security number, date of birth, credit and debit card numbers, PIN Number or other sensitive information, to report a suspected suspicious text, send all of the pertinent information by email to spam@uspis.gov.

Former Congressman George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, he could face 7 years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7th.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 75 year old Wayne Sparling of Walton for Aggravated Harassment. On July 23rd, Deputies received a complaint of a dispute between neighbors, they requested an Arrest Warrant from the Town of Walton Court. On August 7th, Deputies received an Arrest Warrant and arrested Sparling, he was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment Processing.
Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that allows New York’s small craft manufacturers of spirits & cider, to ship directly to consumers. The new law takes effect in 90 days, allowing consumers to purchase New York’s craft spirits & cider and have it shipped to their home.
Chenango County Health Department will hold a rabies clinic for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets today at Baille Lumber in Smyrna from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Pre-Registration is required by calling 607-337-1673, a $5 donation is suggested. Otsego County Public Health is also holding a vaccine clinic for dogs, cats & Ferrets at Neahwa Park in Oneonta today from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

23 year old Elijah Gibson of Endicott, pleaded guilty Monday in Broome County Court to Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Gibson will spend 5 years in New York State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision. On December 30th, in Endicott, Gibson possessed a loaded and operable 9mm firearm. Gibson is due back in court for sentencing on September 25th.
State Police will be holding a Child Passenger Car Safety Seat Check today, as State Law requires that all children must be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle until they reach their 8th birthday. Troopers will be available from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Broome County Fairgrounds in Whitney Point.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a fatal, two car motor vehicle accident yesterday morning on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. 45 year old Marsha Rotella of Delhi was traveling on State Highway 28 when she was attempted to pass a 2nd vehicle, operated by 46 year old Jamie Navarro of Pembroke Pines, Florida, an approaching, uninvolved vehicle caused Rotella to steer back into the southbound lane & she hit the Navarro vehicle, lost control, she skidded off the roadway and overturned, Rotella was ejected from the vehicle, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden leads the Republican predecessor Donald Trump 47%-39% among registered voters in New York State, according to a recent Siena College poll. New York State Voters have not favored a Republican for President since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
The U.S. Department of Labor found A.W. Stiles Contractors of McMinnville, Tennessee failed to provide 4 workers with effective fall protection, following an investigation, into a fatal fall of a worker in Smyrna, last December, The workers were replacing an aluminum standing seam roof on a building at Baillie Lumber Company, OSHA also found that A.W. Stiles did not train employees on fall hazards & respiratory hazards were not evaluated, Stiles also failed to ensure workers were medically able to use respirators. A.W. Stiles was cited for 8 violations, with a total of $83,885 in penalties.

Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a fatal, two car motor vehicle accident yesterday morning on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. 45 year old Marsha Rotella of Delhi was traveling on State Highway 28 when she was attempted to pass a 2nd vehicle, operated by 46 year old Jamie Navarro of Pembroke Pines, Florida, an approaching, uninvolved vehicle caused Rotella to steer back into the southbound lane & she hit the Navarro vehicle, lost control, she skidded off the roadway and overturned, Rotella was ejected from the vehicle, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stiles did not train employees on fall hazards & respiratory hazards were not evaluated, Stiles also failed to ensure workers were medically able to use respirators. A.W. Delaware County Sheriff's Office announced that a Bench Warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court has resulted in the arrest of 55 year old Tina Kerschner of the town of Colchester. Last Saturday Night, Deputies & Town of Colchester Police located Kerschner at her residence, she was ordered to leave the premises at first she failed to comply, she was additionally charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration in addition to the bench warrant, she was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility & is due to appear in the Town of Colchester Court on a later date.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital where they were later released.

The State of Emergency and Travel Ban for Chenango County and the City of Norwich continues to be in effect today, due to numerous roads still closed due to downed trees & power lines, Chenango County Director of Emergency Services Matt Beckwith gave WCDO News an update this morning:

Beckwith said that The Norwich YMCA is operating a shelter, The Smyrna & Coventry Fire Departments are operating as "Warming Stations", The Norwich High School will be a warming shelter with showers available, Otselic Valley Central school will have overnight shelter, showers & food available, The Sherburne Earlville School has food available for pick up only, The Unadilla Valley School will be open until 7:00 PM for shelter, And NYSEG is making dry ice available at the Fire Departments in Afton, Bainbridge, Greene, Guilford, Norwich & Smyrna.
NYSEG reported that nearly 100,000 customers were without power, one of the largest power outages ever in the Southern Tier, it may take another day or 2 to fully restore power.
The Otsego County Office of Emergency Services announced that they have lifted the State of Emergency Declaration, they report that all roads are open, but they urge that motorists drive with extra caution. All Otsego County offices were open today, Emergency Shelters have been set up at the Oneonta Armory, Clark's Sports Center in Cooperstown, Affected Students at SUNY Oneonta are being sheltered in the Alumni Field House. The Schenevus Fire House has Dry Ice & Bottled Water, Otsego County is working to distribute those items at other locations as it becomes available.
The Susquehanna SPCA is assisting pet owners without power & heat through its Emergency Boarding Program. The American Red Cross opened 2 overnight shelters last night, for those without power & heat. 1 location was the Deposit Fire Department on 2nd Street, another was at the Trinity Church at 118 Oak Street in Binghamton.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 29 year old Nicole Robinson of Davenport, on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Jefferson Court for Aggravated Harassment and Menacing. State Police learned Saturday that Robinson was staying in a residence in the Town of Davenport, Deputies located and arrested Robinson, she was turned over to State Police, to be arraigned on the arrest warrant, as well as additional charges resulting from the investigation.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 66 year old Clayton Monroe of Hartwick for multiple burglaries in Otsego County. Monroe was charged with 2 counts of Burglary, plus Grand Larceny, Criminal Mischief, 2nd & 3rd degree Assault, Possession of Burglar Tools, after Deputies were dispatched to a burglar alarm activation Sunday, they observed Monroe leaving in a vehicle at a nearby parking lot without lights on, a traffic stop was conducted, and Monroe was arrested. Monroe failed to comply with booking procedures and a corrections officer sustained an injury that required medical attention. Monroe was remanded to the Otsego County Jail, the investigation is on-going and additional charges are expected.
Delaware County Deputies observed an SUV traveling at 83 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester. Deputies arrested 36-year-old Christina Daggett of Central Square, her Driver’s License had been previously revoked for operating without insurance. Daggett was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operator, Speeding & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, she was released on an Appearance Ticket, returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

Firefighters in Norwich fought a blaze at 20 Brown Street Sunday afternoon at around 3:35 PM. 1 occupant escaped firefighters from North Norwich & Plymouth assisted the Norwich Fire Department, no injuries were reported, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Chenango County Public Health announced that they now have 139 positive cases of the Coronavirus. No one is hospitalized currently, 33 are quarantined, 131 have recovered, there were 6 deaths, and they have conducted over 880 tests.
Broome County Health Department announced their Coronavirus numbers Monday that they have 632 total cases of the Coronavirus, with 51 deaths, 545 recoveries, and 146 are being monitored by the department, they have conducted just under 18,000 tests.
The State Health Department announced that Sunday's hospitalizations from the Coronavirus were down to 1,122, there were 10 deaths Sunday, over 56,000 tests were conducted, with .97% tested positive. there were 552 Additional Coronavirus positive Cases in New York State Sunday, Bringing Statewide Total to 388,488; the death toll is 24,793

Brooks was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle among other charges, he was ordered to appear in Village of Walton Court at a later date.

An investigation revealed that 38 year old Timothy Wilcox shot his estranged wife, 35 year old Meghan Wilcox then turned the gun on himself, and a 16-year-old teen was at the house at the time of the incident and was not injured. Meghan Wilcox was transported Wilson Hospital in Johnson City where she is in critical condition, Timothy Wilcox was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City and later flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse & was in critical condition, he is employed as a peace officer with the Broome County Security Division. The investigation is on-going.

Governor Cuomo said that the total Hospitalizations statewide was about 4000 patients for the Coronavirus, there were 74 more deaths Wednesday, bringing the state death toll to 23,722, there are 366, 733 positive coronavirus tests in the state since early March.
The Chenango County Public health announced their latest Coronavirus numbers today. They are up to 125 confirmed cases, 103 people are quarantined, 1 person is hospitalized & there have been 91 recoveries, they have performed over 3300 tests.
Purdue farms of the state of Maryland is the latest business to sue Maines Paper & Food Service of Conklin for breach of Contract, for allegedly failing to pay for 1.4 Million dollars in food deliveries earlier this year, on top of another $4 million dollars in overdue payments from previous invoices. Maines is facing similar action from 6 other companies that have been filed in US District Court. Maines recently closed down their "Broadline" operations in Conklin & laid of hundreds of employees.
Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies arrested 47 year-old Lionel Simard of Davenport for possession of stolen property, he is accused of possessing license plates that were reported stolen from a parked vehicle in the Town of Davenport on May 21st. Simard was issued an appearance ticket in the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.
State Police, Sherburne Police & several other agencies, responded to a report of a person in the Chenango River that went underwater and had not resurfaced in Sherburne. The New York State Underwater Recovery Team and divers and an air boat from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire searched the river, Shortly after 8:00 p.m., the victim was located & was pronounced deceased at the scene & has been identified as The victim is identified as 18-year-old Nicholas Russell of Smyrna. Police said that Russell and 3 friends were swimming in the Chenango River when he began to have difficulty staying above water. A witness attempted to assist Russell but he went under water and never re-surfaced.
State Department of Labor released local unemployment rates for April. The number of private sector jobs in the State was 6,467,600, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.1% to 14.5%. Locally, Chenango County's Unemployment rate was 11.7%, Delaware County 12.4% & Otsego County was 12%.
State Police responded to a residence on Spruce Street in the Village of Roxbury for a serious injury. An investigation revealed that a 36-year-old male was slashed in the midsection with a knife. The male was transported by LifeNet to Albany Med where he is in critical condition. Several people that were in the residence are being interviewed and cooperating with State Police, There is no threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing and more will be released as it is available.
State Police issued more than 8,900 tickets during a special traffic enforcement period over Memorial Day Weekend, which started last Friday, through 3:00 AM Tuesday. During this enforcement period, State Troopers arrested 203 people for DWI, and investigated 457 crashes, which injured 11 people. State Police responded to two fatal crashes during the weekend.
Delaware County is reporting no new case of COVID-19 today and no additional recoveries. The known active cases in the County are 13. To date there have been 73 confirmed positive cases, with 30 people under quarantine, 5 cases are receiving care in the hospital, 8 are isolated at home, 4 people have died and 56 have fully recovered.
Otsego County Department of Health announced 2 more positive Coronavirus cases, bringing them to 65 total cases. Both new cases were asymptomatic both worked in nursing homes outside of Otsego County. All Nursing home workers are tested for the Coronavirus twice a week in New York State.

The Annual Bainbridge Glow Run will be held Saturday at
General Clinton Park in Bainbridge. The
event began in 2015 after Heather Bucalos of Sidney finished her treatment for
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and decided to hold fundraisers for area cancer
patients. This year, Heather has
suffered a relapse & her friends are teaming up to raise funds for her with
the Glow Run Fundraiser, one of those friends is Christine Oliver, who talked to

of Otselic for a reported stabbing Wednesday, where a male victim was stabbed
multiple times by a coworker at a cell phone tower. The victim was airlifted to SUNY Upstate
Hospital; he was listed in serious, but stable condition. Deputies arrested 49 year old Howard Williams
from the Bronx; for 2nd degree Assault he was taken into custody in the Town of
McGraw by State Police and Cortland County Sheriff’s Office. Williams was arraigned in the Town of Smyrna
Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $10,000 cash
bail.

announced a new partnership that will ensure that individuals with variety of
abilities achieve the life of their choosing.
Joshua House Executive Director Delsa McEwan said that there will be no
adverse changes to the Sidney facilities:

culvert. The road is expected to be

The State DOT will hold a public information meeting on
Tuesday, September 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge Town Hall, to
provide details about plans to improve the pavement condition on State Route
206 from Case Road in the town of Bainbridge to the bridge over the Susquehanna
River in the village of Bainbridge. The
meeting will begin with a formal presentation at 6 p.m. followed by a question
and answer session with DOT representatives.
The project is scheduled to begin in the 2020 construction season and
take one and a half seasons to complete.

Steve Luscomb of Downsville, Friday for Driving while Intoxicated, Reckless
Driving, Failure to Keep Right, Unsafe Tire, and Refusal to take a Breath
Test. This arrest followed a property
damage accident on State Highway 8 in the Town of Masonville. Luscomb was arraigned in Masonville Town
Court and was released on his own recognizance.
Luscomb is scheduled to appear in the Town of Masonville Court at a
later date.
