The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for September, The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 4.4% in September 2024. Locally, Chenango County had 2.7% unemployment, Delaware County 3.2% & Otsego County had 2.9% in September.
Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 48 year old Noel Wildey following an execution of an eviction in the Town of Masonville. Last Wednesday, members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Civil Division were conducting an eviction at a residence in the Town of Masonville, where Wildey failed to provide his proper name and date of birth, giving several false names, it was discovered that Wildey had an active Arrest Warrant out of the State of Pennsylvania. Wildey was charged on the warrant & for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Obstruction of Governmental Administration, he was held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to for arraignment.
Secretary of State Walter Mosley today announced the completion of the $19 million Dietz Street mixed-use housing development as part of the Oneonta Downtown Revitalization Initiative, which includes the new Hartwick College Baking Innovation Lab:

The new mixed-use building was constructed on an underutilized parking lot on Dietz Street and now hosts not only the Hartwick Baking Innovation Lab, but also 64 units of affordable and below market rate housing. The project received $1,470,000 in funding from the City’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award.
The 43rd Annual Norwich Family YMCA Turkey Trot a 5k Run/Walk will be held in Norwich, to support the Norwich Family YMCA. The event will be held on November 24th, registration is available at raceroster.com.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 30 year old Jacob Nack of Oneonta for Promoting Prison Contraband. Nack is accused of not taking his medications properly while in the Otsego County Correctional Facility, he was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.
Several Fire Companies responded to a barn fire on County Route 22 in Smyrna Sunday morning. Several animals died in the fire, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
A ribbon cutting will be held for the Hartwick College Baking Innovation Lab on Dietz Street in downtown Oneonta this morning at 11 am. This unit of the Hartwick Center for Craft Food and Beverage will provide world-class research and hands-on learning.

State Police seized a large quantity of illegal drugs resulting from a traffic stop on I-81 Tuesday. Troopers on I-81 observed a speeding vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. 43 year old Eduardo Azcona of Corona, Queens was operating the vehicle with a suspended license, he attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody after an altercation and the assistance of a taser. Troopers executed a search warrant on the vehicle & seized of crack cocaine, powder cocaine, MDMA, fentanyl & cannabis, Azcona was charged with multiple counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of Cannabis, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & Resisting Arrest, he was transported to the Cortland County Correctional Facility for Centralized Arraignment.

Brian Canfield of Greene pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs in Delaware County Court Wednesday. Canfield appeared in Delaware County Court for a conference on his pending indictment, On February 17, 2024, Sidney Police Officer Royce Terry observed a motor vehicle parked in the library parking lot after it was closed, with Canfield slumped over the steering wheel, and the engine was running, Canfield was under the influence of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl. Canfield will be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, he faces sentencing on September 23rd.
President Biden has nominated former area Congressman & current Judge Anthony Brindisi to serve at the federal level in Utica based on the recommendation of U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Brindisi has been on the New York State Court of Claims since 2022. This nomination is for the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, Brindisi will be to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee, followed by full Senate confirmation.
Congressman Marc Molinaro's constituent service team will hold mobile office hours today, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at the Oneonta Town Hall, constituents will be able to connect with representatives from Rep. Molinaro's office to resolve issues they are having with federal agencies like the VA, IRS, and Social Security Administration.

State Police are now accepting applications for the Trooper Entrance Examination, and testing for candidates will start on August 15th, Candidates can sign up to take the exam at joinstatepolice.ny.gov. Minimum qualifications needed to sign up for the examination, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, at least 20 years old and a maximum of 34 years old at the time of application.
