Operation Merry Christmas has their Christmas trees at various locations, to get presents under Christmas trees for children in disadvantaged situations locally. Program coordinator Ginny Ireland explains how the program will work over the next 2 weeks:

The Sidney Central School District Freshman Class is having a toy drive to help replace the Toys For Tots toys lost in the storage facility fire in Norwich last Friday. School officials said that the freshman class decided to do the toy drive, as many remember that Roger Barnhart, the Toys for Tots coordinator, donated toys to kids who lost toys in the flooding. Toys can be dropped off at the Sidney High School offices by Monday, December 9th.
Assemblyman Cliff Crouch is hosting 3 town hall meetings this week in Kirkwood, Windsor and Triangle. Crouch told WCDO News about the town hall meeting and why he tries to schedule as many as he can each fall:

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is proposing cutting the excise tax on small breweries, to help them grow their businesses, hire new employees and revitalize communities. Schumer's legislation would cut the excise tax on small breweries in half, from $7 to $3.50 per barrel for the first 60,000 barrels they brew per year.
The Supreme Court refused to consider throwing out New York State’s taxes on Internet purchases on websites like Amazon.com. The high court refused to hear appeals from Amazon.com LLC and Overstock.com, in their fight against a state law that forces them to remit sales tax the same way in-state businesses do. Amazon has been collecting sales tax in New York as it fights the state over a 2008 law that was the first to consider local affiliates enough of an in-state presence to require sales tax collection

The first day of the WCDO Fundraiser for the Chenango County Toys for Tots programs was very successful, with donations of toys, checks & cash coming into the WCDO studios throughout the day. A fire in Norwich Friday damaged about $8,000 of toys stored by the program for this year’s drive, Toys for Tots Coordinator Roger Barnhart stopped by yesterday to talk about the importance of the program, and how many people benefited last year locally:

Barnhart left WCDO with $3148 yesterday, about 97% of the money collected goes directly for toy purchases. Donations are being accepted at WCDORADIO.com for toys for tots, toys are still being accepted at the WCDO Studios today, they will also be collected in Bainbridge this Saturday when the Toys for Tots train stops at noon.
A wood stove is blamed for a Saturday fire in Deposit. Deposit Firefighters & fire fighters from 7 other departments responded to 2941 China Road around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, the house was a total loss, the Red Cross is assisting occupants.
State police at Sidney arrested 31-year-old Howard Archer of Unadilla for unlawful possession of marihuana. The arrest resulted from a vehicle stop on Pine Hill Road in Sidney. Police searched Archer’s vehicle & confiscated 15 grams of marihuana and two smoking pipes with burnt marihuana residue, Archer was released on tickets returnable to the Sidney town court on December 12th.
State troopers arrested 32-year-old Nicole Caves of Beacon, New York Saturday, after a property damage automobile accident on State Route 17 in Hancock. Caves was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a reportable BAC result of .26%, more than 3 times the legal limit. Cave was issued tickets to appear in the Hancock town court on January 26,
The Oneonta Common Council approved a 2014 budget by a vote of 5 to 2 Last week. The $15.3 million dollar general fund budget for 2014 carries a tax levy increase of 1.5%, a public hearing on the plan Will be held tonight at Oneonta City Hall at 7:00, the council will then likely vote on the budget.

The Norwich Fire Department battled a fire Friday at a storage unit complex on County route 32 in the Town of Norwich. The call was received at 8:00 am (//0) for smoke coming from storage lockers at The Storage Center; Mutual aid was received from North Norwich, Plymouth, Sherburne and South New Berlin, with Oxford Fire Department on stand-by. The Chenango County Toys for Tots program lost toys in Friday’s fire, the cause is currently under investigation by the Chenango County Bureau of Fire and State Police.

2 polls were released last week show that more people across the state are against fracking for natural gas than are in favor of it. A Marist poll shows that 47% are against fracking while 37% support it, with upstate opposition Upstate at 53%. A Quinnipiac Poll had 46% of people opposed to fracking while 44% favor it. Governor Cuomo has said that a decision on fracking will be made before next year's election; The Joint Landowners Coalition of New York is ready to file a lawsuit against the Governor over the delay.
The Eat Smart New York Program from Cornell Cooperative Extension will demonstrate healthy ways to serve fruits and vegetables during the holidays. Oneonta Police Department responded to a report of suspicious activity on Gilbert Street Thursday. Police investigated & arrested 29-year-old Jahari Brown of Utica, & 22-year-old Davon Sanders of Utica, on charges of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The pair are accused of possessing 25 bags of heroin with a street value of approximately $500. Police also recovered a handgun and a loaded sawed-off shotgun. Both subjects were held pending arraignment in Oneonta City Court, the investigation is continuing.
A gas leak inside the former Midtown Mall building at 83 Court Street in downtown Binghamton Thursday, led to an evacuation of area buildings. Workers building student housing were cutting a pipe that they believed to be inactive, when a plasma cutter ignited gas in the pipe. Binghamton firefighters, Police & NYSEG Crews responded, at around 11:20 AM, no injuries were reported, and evacuees were allowed back into their buildings about 2 hours later.

Governor Cuomo announced that tickets are now on sale for the Taste NY Harvest Fest at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, November 2 and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 3 in the Horticulture Building. State regulators claim that utilities providing natural gas service have adequate supplies, delivery capability and storage inventory, to meet customer demands under severe winter weather conditions. The Public Service Commission said that their annual review of the utilities winter preparedness also finds that customers heating bills are expected to rise this winter by more than 3% or about $6 a month, during the heating season.
DOT Officials announced that Prospect Street eastbound between Karlada Drive and Front Street in Binghamton would be closed for reconstruction of Prospect Street near the Front Street intersection. A signed detour will be in place for Prospect Street eastbound traffic to Front Street, which will guide motorists on Prospect Street west to Airport Road, to the on-ramp to State Route 17 eastbound & to Interstate 81 northbound exit 5 to Front Street. This traffic restriction will be in place for 6 weeks.
Congressman Chris Gibson announced a bill to create a Tick-borne Disease Advisory Committee. Gibson said that they want to increase awareness & improve the diagnosis & treatment of those diseases, the CDC estimates that the number of Americans diagnosed with Lyme Disease each year is about 300,000, more information is available at Gibson.house.gov.
The Unadilla Fire Department will hold an open house tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the firehouse on Clifton Street. The public is invited to check out the department’s equipment, and members will be on hand to answer questions.
The New York health exchange has signed up 134,000 New Yorkers since it opened on October 1st. The goal is to sign up 1 million uninsured New Yorkers over the next 3 years. The exchanges open January 1st and runs through March 31st, more information is available at nystateofhealth.ny.gov.
New York state education commissioner John King will tour the state to hear concerns about the newly implemented Common Core Education standards. King’s tour will take him to 16 stops, including appearances at 12 public forums moderated by state lawmakers. Schumer is urging passage of the Obama Administrations 2014 budget, which includes 36.2 million dollars for the gauge program, an increase of 7.3 million dollars. The budget also includes 63 million dollars for the USGS Cooperative Water Program, an increase of 400 thousand dollars. Schumer would like see up to 300 new stream guages installed nationwide, with New York State being given particular focus. Schumer said that if approved, the funding would go into effect October 1st. More than $1.1 billion in unclaimed life insurance benefits have been recovered nationwide after an investigation by New York regulators. The state’s Department of Financial Services said many insurance companies are not using lists of recent deaths from the Social Security Administration to determine whether a policy holder had died. New York regulators will direct insurers to go to NYPolicyFinder.com, to help residents locate lost life insurance policies and annuity contracts.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that 54 million has been awarded to 20 recipients to finance large scale solar energy projects across New York State. The new projects will add 64 megawatts to the state’s solar capacity and will make New York the leader in solar energy generation. New York officials plan to overhaul the state’s psychiatric services over the next four years by consolidating 24 inpatient hospitals statewide into 15 regional centers and establishing more than two dozen outpatient service hubs. The consolidation plan, released by the Office of Mental Health on Wednesday, also includes closing psychiatric hospitals in Elmira and Binghamton in 2014. The plan is expected to save $20 million the first year. The state spends about $6.6 billion, including federal funds, annually on mental health treatment.
A Binghamton man was charged with felony second-degree strangulation following a dispute on Willow Street with a family member, according to Johnson City police. 33 year old Kareem A. Davis is accused of threatening to kill a woman, and then grabbing her by the neck and choking her, causing her to pass out. Davis was arraigned in village court and sent to the Broome County jail.

The DEC has identified potential changes based on discussions with anglers, biologists, and fisheries managers. Now the DEC is seeking additional angler feedback. Fire destroyed Upturn Industries at 2 Whitney Way in Bainbridge this morning. The fire was reported at around 6:00 AM, crews from Bainbridge, Afton, Sidney, Masonville & Unadilla and several other departments responded, the cause of the fire is under investigation. Upturn manufactured aerospace components at the site, employing 30 people.

The American Red Cross announced that another Communities that Care Blood Drive is scheduled for June 7th from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM at the Howard Johnson's, in downtown Norwich. Appointments are requested at 1-800-RedCross or at redcrossblood.org. A panel discussion with gas drilling & health experts is scheduled, followed by a question & answer period.

Both were arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and released on their own recognizance to re-appear on March 19th.

Between December and January, the State's unemployment rate rose from 8.2% to 8.4%, with the Upstate counties rate increasing by 1 tenth to 7.9%. Areas with the biggest job losses included Binghamton, Utica & Rome.
The Oneonta department of public service will be performing hydrant flow tests on Blodgett drive, Farone drive & Carson road after 9:00 PM Tonight. In January, the USDA announced that it would begin a pilot program to test the cost-effectiveness of including Greek yogurt in school meal programs. The state has become the nation’s leader in strained Greek yogurt production with plants such as Chobani, the plants have more than doubled in number and production, and milk production grew by nearly 850 million pounds. The USDA pilot program would be part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, which provides meals in public and private schools.
NYSEG has launched a free online energy efficiency program for residential customers. Energy Saver provides personalized energy-saving recommendations and rewards NYSEG customers with points based on how much energy they save. The points can be redeemed for discounts from online retailers. Customers can join at www.nyseg.com and by clicking on the Energy Saver get started button.
