Broome County native David Sweat pleaded guilty to charges brought against him after he escaped from the Clinton County prison in Dannemora earlier this year. Sweat pleaded guilty to 2 counts of escape and 1 count of promoting prison contraband, for the June jail break with Richard Matt, Sweat was on the run for 22 days until he was found near the Canadian border. He was shot & injured by a state trooper 2 days after Matt was shot & killed by police. Sweat is now serving his time at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, he was previously sent to jail for the murder of Broome County Sheriff's deputy Kevin Tarsia in 2002.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to expedite access to medicinal marijuana for New Yorkers suffering from serious health conditions. Cuomo also announced that he has ordered state health officials to review whether a new, broader medical marijuana program due to begin in January has enough production and dispensing sites to adequately serve the state. 20 sites are scheduled to open early next year. The governor said that the drug would be dispensed to eligible patients as soon as practicable, he also said that the state will abide by standards from the U.S. Justice Department to ensure that New York’s program does not trigger enforcement actions by the federal government.
The Delaware county recycling facility has been in operation fro a full year, accepting a lot more plastic & other items for recycling, according to Delaware County Solid waste Coordinator director Sue McIntyre:

State Police received a report from a resident in Roxbury, that an X-Acto knife type razor blade was found inside a sealed bag of Sour Skittles which had been obtained while Trick or Treating. The candy was not opened until opened on November 9th; it has been traced back to the purchase point of the CVS Pharmacy in Margaretville. The investigation has not been able to identify the source of the razor blade and parents all over the region are recommended to thoroughly check all candy prior to consumption.
State Police have recently received several reports of telephone callers claiming to be from the IRS that aggressively demand the resident pay money to clear up an outstanding tax debt, or face criminal charges. The public is being advised that the IRS does not make phone calls in this manner, and anyone receiving a telephone call of this nature should check with the local IRS office.
First Night and LEAF will be collaborating with the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, December 12th on their annual FREE Christmas Party with live music, games and activities, snacks and a visit from not only Santa. The Elks Club will be welcoming families to participate in a Hoop Shoot from 10 am until noon and the Christmas Party will run from noon until 2 pm. It will also be a chance to purchase discounted buttons for First Night Oneonta's Spectacular New Year's Eve Celebration.

New York outlawed daily fantasy sports websites and FanDuel CEO Nigel Eccles said that they're hoping to work around the decision by New York's Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, that declared daily fantasy sports sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings are illegal gambling operations. Eccles said that their attorney claims that there is a 5-day period allotted in the cease-and-desist letter in which they'll be working to figure out their options. About 10% of the 2 companies business has been from New York.
The New York State Office of General Services announced a surplus vehicle, highway equipment, and miscellaneous property auction will be held today in Binghamton, however the previously scheduled auction in Unadilla was cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Items and terms of sale are available at ogs.ny.gov. Today’s auction will begin at 9:30 AM at the DOT at 241 Colesville Road, Binghamton.

An Amber Alert issued early Tuesday afternoon in Binghamton ended late yesterday afternoon, with the child returned and the suspect in custody. 3 Month Old Lucios Mitchell was taken by 26-year-old Veronica Mitchell from the Chenango Street area at around 12:30 PM, at around 6:00 PM, Mitchell was in custody, and the child was safe.

Prostate cancer remains the second most common cancer among men in New York State, second only to skin cancer. An estimated 1 in 6 men will develop prostate cancer during his lifetime, occurring mostly in men aged 65 and older.

49-year-old William Danielson of Oxford changed his plea today in Chenango County Court, to guilty, as his murder trial was schedule to begin in Norwich. Danielson was charged with murder for the death of Lucinda Knoll of Norwich in 2013. The court has accepted the change in plea and sentencing will be scheduled shortly.
The Delaware County Sheriff's department arrested 31-year-old Sean Dingle of Queens on drug charges, following the execution of a search warrant in the Town of Sidney. The warrant was obtained following a 5-month heroin trafficking investigation conducted by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, the Sidney Police Department, Delaware County Probation Department and the Broome County Special Investigations Task Force. Dingle was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell & Unlawful Possession of Marihuana after seizing 100 bags of heroin & a small amount of marijuana, that Dingle intended to sell at the Unadilla public fishing access lot in Sidney. Dingle was arraigned in Town of Sidney Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail pending a future court appearance.
The Otsego County Department of Health announced today that a skunk in the town of Otego tested positive for rabies. Otsego County Health Department officials stated that 2 unvaccinated dogs were exposed & will be euthanized, the skunk was shot and the remains were sent to the state lab for testing. A free rabies clinic is scheduled for Otego at the fire department on October 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

The changes clarify existing requirements and make it easier for those who store bulk amounts of petroleum or chemicals in tank systems to comply with equipment and handling standards needed to prevent contamination of soil, groundwater, surface water and public water supplies.

Funding will come from the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, out of its $4.4 billion federal allotment.

2 residents were trapped inside a home at 3691 Fuller Hill Road in the town of Colchester when a Tractor Trailer truck crashed into a garage and a house at around 10:30 AM. 2 occupants inside the house were not injured, the unidentified driver of the truck was airlifted to an undisclosed hospital, the investigation is continuing.
Former Assemblyman and Gubernatorial Candidate John Faso will announce his run as a Republican for the 19th Congressional seat. Faso seeks to replace Chris Gibson, who decided to serve only 3 terms in Congress & pursue other ventures.
State Police arrested 27-year-old Joshua Mizell of Johnson City, for menacing and criminal mischief, after a dispute in the Town of Newark Valley. Mizell allegedly waved a knife around, threatened another person & damaged a tire on a car by stabbing it with this knife. Mizell was arraigned and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail or $1,000 property bond.
Deputies investigated a 2-car personal injury car accident on State Route 10 in the Town of Kortright. 26-year-old Daniel Hitchcock of South Kortright failed to yield right of way to a vehicle traveling on Route 10 operated by 23-year-old Edward Wilson, Hitchcock’s vehicle struck Wilson’s vehicle and it overturned. Hitchcock was ticketed for failure to yield right of way and he will appear in Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
50-year-old Larry Servedio of Endicott was indicted in Broome County Court last week on rape & kidnapping charges. Servedio faces 24 counts, which included 1st degree kidnapping, rape, harassment, criminal mischief, & menacing, for alleged attacks on 2 women he met through the LinkedIn social media site, where he claimed to be with the FBI. Servedio is accused of raping a woman from Wisconsin, and forcing her to tell family that she was not returning home, against her will, her family filed a missing persons report. Servedio is being held without bail in the Broome County Jail.

A total of about 500 households took advantage of the free program.

State Police arrested 27-year-old Joshua Mizell of Johnson City, for menacing and criminal mischief, after a dispute in the Town of Newark Valley. Mizell allegedly waved a knife around, threatened another person & damaged a tire on a car by stabbing it with this knife. Mizell was arraigned and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $500 cash bail or $1,000 property bond.
Deputies investigated a 2-car personal injury car accident on State Route 10 in the Town of Kortright. 26-year-old Daniel Hitchcock of South Kortright failed to yield right of way to a vehicle traveling on Route 10 operated by 23-year-old Edward Wilson, Hitchcock’s vehicle struck Wilson’s vehicle and it overturned. Hitchcock was ticketed for failure to yield right of way and he will appear in Town of Kortright Court at a later date.
50-year-old Larry Servedio of Endicott was indicted in Broome County Court last week on rape & kidnapping charges. Servedio faces 24 counts, which included 1st degree kidnapping, rape, harassment, criminal mischief, & menacing, for alleged attacks on 2 women he met through the LinkedIn social media site, where he claimed to be with the FBI. Servedio is accused of raping a woman from Wisconsin, and forcing her to tell family that she was not returning home, against her will, her family filed a missing persons report. Servedio is being held without bail in the Broome County Jail.

Governor Cuomo today announced that emergency regulations have been adopted by the State Department of Health to prevent the spread of Legionella bacteria and protect New Yorkers from future outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease. The regulations take effect immediately. The Governor announced that the Department of Health has launched a general tip line; 1-888-769-7243, to respond to questions or inquiries regarding the regulations from members of the public, as well as engineers, technologists and technicians. These emergency regulations are in effect for 90 days, at which point they will be adopted into permanent regulations, the regulations can be amended before they become permanent.
Governor Cuomo today announced the creation of “NY Responds” to strengthen the State’s emergency preparedness. Every county will have access to universal emergency management software, at no cost to localities, to enable both local governments and state agencies to submit and share vital disaster-related information, from incident reports and resource requests to real-time tracking of assets and weather conditions. The state is supplementing its stockpile of emergency response resources with an additional $50 million worth of equipment in advance of the winter storm season.
Governor Cuomo signed legislation to protect children across New York State from exposure to second-hand smoke. The bill prohibits individuals from smoking near schools while after-school programs are in operation. This bill expands the ban on smoking within 100 feet of the entrances, exits or outdoor areas of public and private schools to prohibit smoking during after-school programs. The ban would be in effect only during those hours in which the after-school programs are in session. Residences or residential property within the 100 foot perimeter would be excluded from the new ban.
On Saturday, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 41 year old Christopher Ross of Franklin, for Driving While Intoxicated, operating an ATV on a public roadway, operating without a helmet, and speed not reasonable and imprudent. This arrest was a result of a motor vehicle accident on Clark Road in the Town of Masonville. Ross was later released on tickets returnable in the Masonville Town Court at a later date.

Sidney Village Superintendent of Public Works Mike Mercurio announced today that work would begin at 8:30 tomorrow morning on the traffic light at the intersection of Main & River Street in downtown Sidney. Mercurio told WCDO News that the 1962 state installed light stopped working on March 11th, and parts were no longer available.
The Norwich Fire Department reported that Route 12 just south of the City was completely shut down due to a hazard chemical spill earlier this afternoon. The highway had to be closed for several hours for the investigation & clean up; Businesses in area of Price Chopper Plaza have not been accessible since the spill. State Police in Deposit arrested 20-year-old Shawn Stamper of Johnson City, for Driving While Intoxicated, following a report of an accident with injuries on Chestnut Street in the Town of Windsor. Stamper was charged with DWI after he crashed into a guide rail and overturned, he was transported to Wilson Hospital with lacerations to his face, he was issued tickets for Town of Windsor Court on August 24th.

Fire investigators have determined that it was a lightning strike that hit the Sidney Federal Credit Union Main branch in Sidney. Vice President of Marketing Keith May told WCDO News that he came to work there at about 6:00 This morning, & the Sidney Fire Department was summoned about an hour later:

May said that the Sidney branch had only minimal damage, teh clean up is underway & the State of the art insulation in the new building smoldered for several hours since the lightning strike at about 10:00 Sunday night, traditional insulation would have likely burst into flames quicker.
A State Department of Corrections employee has been charged with 2nd degree attempted murder in Norwich. Norwich Police arrested 33-year-old Wayne Spratley Sunday morning, following a call about a person displaying a weapon in the area of a North Broad Street business. A Norwich Police Officer responded and heard gunshots near Lackawanna Avenue, where the officer found the victim who appeared to be shot in the stomach, the victim was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse & was listed in critical condition. Spratley was arraigned in Chenango County Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail, additional charges against Spratley are pending & the investigation is ongoing. On Saturday night Delaware County Correctional Facility intake officers conducting a search of a new inmate found Brayan Thompson of Delhi was in possession of a concealed belt buckle knife while being booked into the jail, on an unrelated Burglary charge, he was subsequently charged with Promoting Prison Contraband. Thompson was arraigned on the new charge, & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2000 cash bail; he remains incarcerated pending future court appearances.

The arrests were made as a result of a pursuit and subsequent traffic stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton. Egan was arraigned in the Town of Walton Court and was released to reappear at a later date.
The American Red Cross is holding a Blood drive this afternoon at the Christ Church on State Route 51 in Gilbertsville. The blood drive will run from until 6:00 PM. Appointments can be scheduled at 783-2232; walk-ins are also welcome to donate.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office reported that 45-year old Christine Clark was pronounced dead on arrival at Wilson Hospital, after fire fighters pulled her from a house fire Wednesday evening in the Town of Dickinson. The fire at 127 Adams Drive was called in by a neighbor at about 7:00 PM. The cause of the fire is under investigation, firefighters from the Town of Chenango, Port Dickinson, Choconut Center and Binghamton responded.
The city of Oneonta will officially re-open the Briggs pool bathhouse in Wilber Park, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday at 12:45 PM. The city received funding from a state office of community renewal development block grant to renovate the bathhouse, which was built in 1938. The public is invited to attend.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Adam Whittington of Port Crane on a charge of 3rd degree rape and criminal sexual act, following allegations that he performed sexual acts with a 16-year-old female earlier this month. Whittington was arraigned in the Town of Fenton Court and taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.

The city of Oneonta will officially re-open the Briggs pool bathhouse in Wilber Park, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday at 12:45 PM. The city received funding from a state office of community renewal development block grant to renovate the bathhouse, which was built in 1938. The public is invited to attend.
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Adam Whittington of Port Crane on a charge of 3rd degree rape and criminal sexual act, following allegations that he performed sexual acts with a 16-year-old female earlier this month. Whittington was arraigned in the Town of Fenton Court and taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.
Broome County Sheriff’s department announced the swearing in of new Undersheriff Fred Akshar Wednesday. Akshar was appointed to the position following the retirement of Undersheriff Alex Minor. Akshar began working for the Broome County Sheriff's department as a deputy in 2002.

State Police at Sidney arrested 21 year old Nevin Cutting of Sidney Center, for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a B.A.C. result of .21%. While at an accident scene a Trooper witnessed Cutting drive up and park very closely to the rear of an ambulance and stop, at the intersection of State Routes 7 & 8, in the Town of Unadilla. Cutting was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Unadilla Court on June 22nd.

Broome County Fire officials reported that 4 people died early this morning in a house fire at 439 State Line Road in the town of Vestal. Fire officials said that a mother & 3 of her children were killed in that fire, one 15 year child escaped, and the father of the children was at work. the fire was called in at about 2:00 AM this morning, 5 area fire departments responded, more details will be released at the conclusion of the investigation as well as family notification..
Governor Cuomo announced that road and bridge construction projects on State highways will be suspended from 6:00 AM Friday, to 6:00 AM Tuesday, in order to accommodate travelers during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs. AAA predicts that of the more than 37 million people traveling more than 50 miles from home this weekend, an estimated 33 million of them will be traveling by car. DMV Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan announced that in 2014, 70% of motorcycle permits holders in New York State elected to take motorcycle safety courses, up from 51% in 2010. There are between 36,000 and 44,000 permit riders in a given year in New York State, which allows them to ride on the road under the guidance of a licensed motorcycle operator.
