The Sidney Village Clerk's Office at the Sidney Civic Center is closed for emergency repairs, Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News what the interim plans are:

Village employees came to work this morning to find ceiling damage to the office, WCDO News will have updates regarding changes in schedule for the Village clerk's office when they are announced.

The Otego Fire Department is hosting The Otsego County Fire Fighters Convention this Thursday through Saturday with a variety of events, G.X. Cramatte is one of the organizers, he told WCDO News about Thursday's schedule;

The events continue at the site on fair Street in Otego Friday & Saturday from 12:00 noon each day into the evening hours, with Fireworks on Saturday night.

Sidney Village Officials announced that a water main break occurred on Circle Drive. The water will be shut off to all the apartments on Circle drive until the repairs are completed, which is estimated to be at about 8:00 PM this evening.

Another Sidney Community Clean-Up will be held at Keith Clark Park on Saturday, June 13. Starting time is set for 9:00 at the park pavilion. Volunteers will help variety of jobs throughout the walking trail areas. Some tools will be available, or volunteers may bring their favorite shovels, pruners or other gardening gear. Work gloves should be worn.

State Police arrested 36 year old Salvatore Magro of Sherburne following an investigation into reports that underage victims were subjected to unwanted sexual contact while working with him. The investigation determined that over the last two years Magro engaged in a pattern of inappropriate sexual contact toward multiple teenage victims, while the victims were employed at Joe and Vinny’s Pizzeria on North Main Street in the village of Sherburne. Magro was taken into custody & was charged with Three counts of Forcible Touching, Four counts of Sexual Misconduct & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Magro was transported to the Chenango County Jail for Centralized Arraignment. The victims were issued Orders of Protection, Investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward, they can call State Police at (607)561-7400.

The Village of Sidney Spring Cleanup will begin Monday through Friday May 8th. Village crews will pick up Brush Piled neatly at curb, plus leaves, grass clippings, weed-stalks & hedge trimmings placed in open containers or clear bags. All items must be out to the curb by Monday morning at 7:00 AM for pick-up. The Village will also provide containers at the Village Garage at 28 Sherman Avenue on Friday & Saturday, May 8th & 9th, from 8 AM – 3 PM, for electronics like Computers, TV’s, Cell Phones, Microwaves, Gaming Devices, plus Metal and non-Freon appliances, Tires, as well as Freon containing appliances like refrigerators, freezers & air conditioners.

The annual "I Love My Park Day" is being held statewide tomorrow at a variety of locations. The Deposit Village Board has decided to discontinue their contract with the Broome County Sheriff's Office to have a dedicate law enforcement presence in Deposit. The move comes about 6 years after the dissolution of the Deposit Police Department. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released a statement saying the\at the decision will make emergency response times in the Village unpredictable, they will respond to emergencies along with the New York State Police going forward.

During Earth Week, The State DEC announced a total of 23 municipalities certified under New York State’s Climate Smart Communities Certification program. The certifications recognize that these communities have taken actions to reduce flood risk, address extreme heat, invest in clean energy, improve infrastructure, reduce air pollution, and increase resilience across the state. Bronze certified and re certified communities include: Village of Cooperstown, the Town of Middlefield & Otsego County.

Volunteers are needed to fill some hours at the new location, also, at the end of the year, money raised will be donated to a wide variety of non profit organizations in the Tri-Town Area.

The Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump will return to Goodyear Lake on February 21st, to raise money for area children suffering from a variety of health issues. The event has been held locally for 28 years, Last year they raised $186,000 through donations and auctions, 100% of the proceeds go directly to the children and their families. Delaware County Deputies arrested a Bainbtridge resident Thursday in the Village of Delhi, Deputies observed a vehicle being operated by a male passenger, from the passenger seat, without a driver in the driver seat. 35-year-old William Weil of Bainbridge, appeared to be intoxicated & had a child in the vehicle, he was charged with the Aggravated DWI- child in vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the 1st degree, Driving with a BAC of .08 of 1%, Reckless Driving, Felony DWI & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Weil was released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating 25 year old Alora Stott of Oneonta, she is wanted on active warrants for failing to appear for scheduled court dates at Sidney Village Court & Chenango County Court. Stott failed to appear in Sidney on charges of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, from a January 2025 arrest where Stott was in possession of a stolen checkbook and multiple forged and stolen checks. Stott is also wanted by Chenango County Court for failing to appear on charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, where she & 3 others were found in possession of a stolen Pickup Truck, Anyone with information regarding Stott’s whereabouts is asked to contact State Police at (607) 561-7400.

Delhi Police Department arrested 21 year old Logan Hitchcock of Delhi on charges of 3rd degree Assault, Unlawful Imprisonment and Endangering the Welfare of a Child following a domestic incident in the Village of Delhi. Officers were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute on Meredith Street, they determined that a verbal altercation had escalated into a physical incident, during which a female victim sustained injuries while holding an infant, she was taken to O’Connor Hospital, Hitchcock was located and taken into custody, He was processed and was arraigned, a Temporary Order of Protection was requested on behalf of the victim and child.

This week, the Susquehanna SPCA was able to take possession of a small farm to assist when they have to rescue a number of larger farm animals, Director Stacie Haynes told WCDO news about the need for this space for their operation:

Haynes said that since 2022, they have had to rescue about 300 farm animals for a variety of reasons, which pointed to the need for this farm space on Campbell Hill Road in Cooperstown.

A Chenango County Grand Jury Indicted Zackery England for criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell (fentanyl), possession of methamphetamine, and criminal possession of a forged instrument. Prosecutors said England also attempted to discard fentanyl by throwing it into bushes during a July 23 incident in Norwich. England will appear in Chenango County Court for arraignment shortly.

Delaware County Public Health will hold a free rabies clinic for dogs, cats & domesticated ferrets today, from 5:30PM-7:30PM at the DPW garage at 1 Village Street in Deposit. Pre-registration or more information is available at 607-832-5200.

40 year old Mark Archer of Sidney pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Sexual Abuse in Delaware County Court Thursday. Archer was indicted by a Grand Jury on 12 counts related to sexual abuse against 3 victims were less than 13 years old between 2013 and 2019 in the Village of Sidney, Archer will be sentenced to 13.5 years in state prison and 30 years of post-release supervision, he will be required to register as a sex offender after prison & he is prohibited from contacting his victims.

The 29th Annual Delaware County Clean Sweep will be held in October this year, where residents can properly dispose of a variety of household chemicals, Solid Waste Coordinator Tyson Robb told WCDO News that resident, farms & businesses can start registering now:

Robb said that for those without the internet, there will be a 2 week period in September to phone in for a registration period.

The 2026 property tax levy growth will be capped at 2% for local governments that operate on a calendar-based fiscal year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. This figure affects tax cap calculations for all counties, towns, and fire districts, as well as 44 cities and 13 villages. DiNapoli’s office calculated the 2026 inflation factor at 2.64%, The tax cap, limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2% with certain exceptions. The law also includes a provision that allows municipalities to override the cap.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced the unsealing of an indictment that charged 44 year old Chad Walters of Unadilla, with 1st degree Rape, for allegedly forcibly raping a physically incapacitated female at the victim’s home in Sidney in 2024. The case was presented to a Grand Jury, a warrant for Walters arrest was issued, Sidney Police attempted to locate him, he was found in Texas, he was taken into custody, and was returned to New York by Sidney Police Detective Sergeant Dionne and Officer Wheeler. Walters was returned to Delaware County Court and the indictment was unsealed, Walters was arraigned on the rape charge & he was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff on $50,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Joshua Jenson of Stamford on an Arrest Warrant for failing to appear on charges of False Impersonation. Deputies received information Wednesday Night, that Jenson was in the Village of Hobart and was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies, he was processed and turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office announced an Additional Charge has been filed against 42 year old Christopher DeMarco of Unadilla. Investigators located additional child sexual abuse material on a cell phone that had been found in DeMarco's possession, he was processed for Possession of a Sexual Performance by a Child & was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Middlefield Court at a later date. DeMarco was arrested in March on a variety of charges including Unlawful Surveillance, Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address & Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

State Police are investigating a domestic dispute that occurred Thursday afternoon in the town of Masonville. 22 year old Seth Ostrander of Unadilla is being held for arraigment on a variety of felony charges, the investigation is continuing and more details are expected to be released shortly.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office responded last May to a motor vehicle roll over accident in Harpersfield. 25-year-old Isaiah Caballero of Oneonta, lost control of the vehicle, it left the roadway and struck a tree, 25 year old Nyheim Golden-Williams was killed in the crash. Deputies located cocaine & a loaded pistol that did not have a serial number. Caballero was arrested at the Ulster Correctional Facility Tuesday, he was charged with Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, Criminal Possession of a weapon and Vehicular Manslaughter, he was arraigned and was remanded back to the Ulster Correctional facility on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies also arrested 21-year-old Alexis Lotterman of Walton for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, she was a passenger in the vehicle and was also in possession of the narcotics and firearm, she was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 secured bond.

29 year old Grace Archer of Afton pleaded guilty to Driving While Impaired by Drugs and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court. Archer admitted to possessing methamphetamine and driving while impaired in the village of Sidney on December 31st. Sentencing is set for July 11th, Archer is expected to be sentenced to 3 years in prison to be followed by 2 years of post-release supervision on the drug charge, and 1 year of incarceration for her DWAI conviction.

Agri-Mark Incorporated of Vermont has recalled 189 cases of Cabot Creamery 8-ounce premium butter, Consumers should not eat or use the recalled butter, which has an expiration date of September 9th. Agri-Mark officials said that they have recovered 99.5% of the potentially contaminated lot before it was sold to consumers, it was found to contain Coliform bacteria, Cabot products are sold in several states, including in New York.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office & Binghamton Police conducted targeted enforcement last Friday as part of the State Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative, they performed a total of 19 vehicle stops, among those arrested, 18 year old Isaac Decker of Chenango for speeding, DWI, Reckless Endangerment & several other charges after Decker caused a a 2-car motor vehicle accident at the Court Street roundabout. The Detail also arrested 42 year old Jesten Hyde of Conklin for a variety of drug charges, Hyde was found to possess 23 grams of methamphetamine. The initiative also resulted in drug charges against 38 year old Christopher Pierre of Endicott, for possessing cocaine, methamphetamine and a schedule 2 controlled substance.

Starting January 1st, the minimum wage will go up 50 cents, followed by another 50-cent increase starting January 1, 2026. The minimum wage will be set at $17 in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County and the rest of the state will be set at $16. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 33 year old Nicole Conklin of Otego for 3rd degree Assault following an investigation into a reported physical domestic dispute in the Village of Schenevus. Conklin caused physical injury to another party, she was later located and taken into custody and was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment, an order of protection was issued to protect the victim.

Chenango County Sheriff's Office arrested 26 year old Kayla Van Pelt of Otsego County, for Grand Larceny and Conspiracy. A larceny complaint was filed by a business in the Village of Sherburne, where Van Pelt and two other suspects acted together and stole over one thousand dollars in merchandise. Van Pelt was taken into custody at a residence in Otsego County, transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office to be processed, she was released on an appearance ticket for Village of Sherburne Court at a later date. More arrests are expected to be made.

The Gilbertsville Christmas Bazaar will be on Saturday, from 9 am. to 2 pm. at Gilbertsville Baptist Church, New Life Fellowship Hall, Commercial Street. A variety of Crafts, raffles and other items will be available, Lunch and dessert will be from 11:30 am. to 1 pm.

The Afton Village Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, with the line up at 5:15 & the parade starts at 6:00 PM. Award Plaques will be awarded for the top 3 best interpretations of a Dickens Christmas Carol.

49 year old Keith Audette of Hamden pleaded guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court Tuesday, Audette admitted that he had been previously convicted of Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated in Chenango County in 2015, he also admitted that he drove a motor vehicle in the Village of Walton on April 9th while under the influence of methamphetamine. Audette is expected to be sentenced to 5 years of felony probation supervision, and his license will be revoked, he will also be required to pay any fines and surcharges imposed by the Court.

The Great American Smoke-Out is today nationwide, to help people quit smoking tobacco for one day, in the hope that they keep it going beyond today. The Chenango County Health Department encourages individuals who use nicotine/tobacco products to participate in the Great American Smoke-Out. Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 3 people after a 3-month investigation into fraud, forgery and identity theft. In August, Deputies received a complaint in regard to stolen funds from multiple accounts, multiple unknown charges and new accounts being opened without consent. Deputies, Sidney Police & State Police and the Delaware County District Attorney's Office arrested 44 year old Lori Brooks of Sidney, 27 year old Joshua Hunt of Unadilla & 37 year old Matthew Walsh of Sidney on a variety of charges including Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & criminal possession of stolen property, Brooks was issued an appearance ticket and turned over to State Police for an outstanding warrant & was then turned over to the Otsego County Correctional Facility for arraignment. Hunt was being held at the Otsego County Jail on an unrelated charge, he was processed & was brought back to the Otsego County Jail, Walsh was turned over to the Delaware County Correctional Facility for Arraignment, he will appear at the Village of Sidney Court at a later date, the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.

The Sidney Elks Lodge will be hosting a Veterans Resource Fair Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at the lodge on River Street. There will be a free lunch, free haircuts & a variety of services available to area Veterans such as Blood Pressure screenings, and representatives from Medicare, The VA of Albany, The Tri-County Veterans Services as well as financial experts. A Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8-count indictment against Robert Trago, Jr., and Ava Krajewski on a variety of charges including Attempted Murder, Criminal Use & Criminal Possession of a Firearm &criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Trago allegedly shot another person, while intending to cause his death, in the Town of Hancock on September 4th, Both face lengthy Jail Sentences if convicted on all of the charges.

33 year old Shaun Carman of Walton pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court last week. Carman admitted that on March 13th, in the Village of Delhi, he possessed a quantity of fentanyl with the intent to sell it, he will be sentenced to 2 years in state prison, followed by 1 year of post release supervision, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing on December 16th.

Dean Said that their trailer will be behind Bob's Diner in Bainbridge starting Saturday through Friday October 11th, and then they will head south with the donations.

Congressman Marc Molinaro's constituent service team will hold mobile office hours from 11:00am to 1:00pm today, at the Village of Afton Community Center from 12:00pm to 2:00pm & at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Meeting Room. Constituents will be able to connect with representatives from Rep. Molinaro's office to share comments and resolve issues they are having with federal agencies.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for the passage of legislation that would provide free breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack to all schoolchildren regardless of income:

Gillibrand said that Studies show that Free school meals are associated with a variety of positive outcomes, including improved attendance rates and school performance, fewer behavioral incidents, lower suspension rates, better health outcomes, and reduced financial stress for students and families.

23 year old Elijah Gibson of Endicott, was sentenced today in Broome County Court to 5 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Weapon. On December 30, 2023, in the Village of Endicott, Gibson possessed a loaded and operable 9mm firearm, leading to his arrested & conviction.

Delaware County District Attorney Shawn Smith announced that the Delaware County Grand Jury returned an 8-count indictment against 32 year old Drew Garnier of Masonville for the murder of his wife Samantha, and the attempted murder of their 2 children. Garnier was indicted for 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Murder, Criminal use of a firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for possessing assault weapons, he pleaded not guilty to each charge & was remanded to the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office without bail.

Chenango County Habitat for Humanity will be hosting their annual yard sale fundraiser today from 9 am. to 5 PM, tomorrow & Saturday from 9 am. to 3 PM, on State Route 12 in Oxford next to the Mirabito Gas Station. There will be a variety of items available for sale, including adult and children’s clothing, shoes and boots and much more.

The Sidney Village Board met last night, & there were questions regarding an additional charge added to the water bill starting September 1st. Sidney Village Mayor Ray Baker told WCDO News that the village had to find a new water source after years of manganese in the old supply, and was ordered by the DEC to correct the problem, there was state money & loans available to help pay for it, which led to the rate increase:

Baker said that they hope to have the new well for the village on line by the end of the year, he said that anyone who would like more information can contact the Sidney village office & set up a meeting with him & others involved in the project.

The United State Postal Inspection Service is warning Americans of a new attempt for hackers to use your own device to steal your identity. There are a variety of messages these scammers will send to get you to click on a link & that will lead to the hackers retrieving information, such as account usernames and passwords, Social Security number, date of birth, credit and debit card numbers, PIN Number or other sensitive information, to report a suspected suspicious text, send all of the pertinent information by email to spam@uspis.gov.

Former Congressman George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, he could face 7 years in prison under the terms of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7th.

25 year old Sean Gillespie of Bovina pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court last week. Gillespie appeared in County Court on July 1st for a conference on his pending indictment, After the conference, he pleaded guilty, he admitted that on March 13th in the Village of Delhi, he possessed a quantity of fentanyl with intent to sell, he will be sentenced to 3 years in state prison, followed by 1 year of post release supervision, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing.

Broome County Sheriff’s 4th Most Wanted fugitive, 29 year old Joseph Chinchilla, was found in Chenango Forks and was arrested for Reckless Endangerment & Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle after fleeing police in January. Late Wednesday, members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Warrants Division and the US Marshals executed a search warrant in Chenango Forks, Chinchilla was found hiding in the basement behind a couch. He was wanted for the January incident as well as on a Violation of Probation charge in the Village of Endicott. Chinchilla was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and remains in custody at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility.

Binghamton Police arrested 3 people in connection with a report of shots fired Monday, During an execution of a search warrant of an apartment at 100 Susquehanna Street, detectives seized a 9mm handgun & cocaine. Binghamton Police arrested 44 year old Sacreama Thompson, 19 year old Tyseem Smith-Nimmons & 18 year old Naziah Roas, all of Binghamton on a variety of drug & weapons charges & tampering with evidence.

Sidney Police Department received report of an armed robbery Friday Afternoon at about 1:35 PM at Smiley's at 17 West Main Street. The suspect displayed a Handgun, demanded cash, he was wearing a black and purple wig, blue Oneonta YellowJackets hooded sweatshirt and pink slippers. The suspect left went hrough yards, left behind the disguises and left in a Silver Subaru parked on Adams Street, & left the village. The suspect is a bald or balding, heavy set white male over 6 feet tall. The Oxford Village Tree Board will be holding its 31st "Tree City USA" and Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, starting at 9 am., at Lafayette Park. The Tree City USA flag and plaque presentation will be held along with a giveaway of seedling trees and shrubs.

Area businessman Fran Phelps, owner of Village Variety in Unadilla passed away Saturday at the age of 83, after a battle with cancer. Phelps started Village Variety in 1979, The business will be taken over by longtime employee and store manager Chris Tuttle.
