46 year old Arthur Cotten of Sidney, pleaded guilty to Reckless Endangerment & resisting Arrest in Delaware County Court, he was appearing for a conference on a pending indictment, he decided to pleaded guilty to the charges, relating to an incident on July 19, 2025, in the Village of Sidney, where he attempted to light himself on fire with gasoline in a garage near a propane tank, Sidney Police Officers Royce Terry and Jenna Nordberg, managed to get the fire extinguished without any person or property being seriously harmed. Attorney General Letitia James today joined a coalition of 7 other attorneys general in suing to stop the merger of Nexstar Media Group and Tegna, 2 of the biggest owners of local television stations in the nation. The proposed merger would create the largest broadcast station group in the country and consolidate ownership of popular local television stations in media markets across the nation, the coalition argues that this merger would be illegal, could raise costs for consumers, and would degrade the quality of local news. The lawsuit seeks a court order declaring the merger illegal and preventing it from being completed.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested 46 year old Adam Smith of Kirkwood after Deputies responded Wednesday to report of a man driving in circles on someone's lawn, firing a weapon & striking an electrical transformer & hitting another vehicle while leaving. On Thursday investigators learned that Smith was outside his residence armed with a weapon, he went back inside when officers responded, After a brief standoff, Smith was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was executed, they seized 2 unregistered handguns, 40-long guns and narcotics. Smith was charged with 2 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Mischief, Reckless Endangerment, 5 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Illegal Discharge of a Firearm, he was turned over the Broome County Correctional Facility for Arraignment. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by State Police in this investigation.

State Police are warning New Yorkers of a scam in which individuals are impersonating members of the State Police, claiming you need to speak with a prosecutor regarding bail money for a loved one. The State Police will NEVER ask for money or talk about payments, they advise that if you receive a call of this nature, hang up immediately and contact your local State Police station to verify any information.

47 year old Nicholas Cartelli of Otego pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance last week. On January 3rd, Cartelli & a co-defendant possessed 1 or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing a narcotic, Cartelli admitted that he possessed Heroin in the Village of Sidney, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail to await his sentencing, which is set for August 5th, he will be sentenced to 4 years in state prison and 2 years of post-release supervision.

Wildfires have been reported on Long island, as well as another in the Adirondacks, the State's annual Burn Ban will start on March 16th & will run through Mid May. The DEC reports that the Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires in New York State. When temperatures warm and the past fall's debris and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily, further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation.
State Police at Deposit responded Thursday to a fatal crash in the 4100 block of State Route 26 in the town of Nanticoke. Troopers, Maine Ambulance and Glen Aubrey Fire Department found that a Ford pick-up that had crashed, with the driver pinned underneath the tire. It was determined that the driver was already deceased by the time the first responders arrived. The driver is identified as 22 year old Sethe Menta of Lisle, Members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Collision Reconstruction Unit also responded to the scene.
Walton Fire Department responded Sunday afternoon to a structure fire in the Town of Walton. The call came in as a chimney fire with the homeowner concerned that it had extended into the wall behind the wood stove as there was black smoke and the sound of fire within the walls. At 4:45 pm the homeowner reported seeing flames upstairs and was unsure if it was coming from walls or chimney. Sidney Center and Trout Creek departments were moved from their station to the scene and Franklin Fire Dept was requested for a tanker. By 5:17 the fire was reported under control with units checking for extension and doing overhaul work. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

54 year old Dale Kowatch of Margaretville was sentenced to 9 months of incarceration for Driving While Intoxicated. On July 5th, 2024, State Police observed a vehicle weaving in and out of the double yellow lines on State Highway 28, a traffic stop was conducted & Kowatch admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages, he failed field sobriety tests, Kowatch had a prior conviction for DWI, making new charge a felony, punishable by jail time.

Gardepe has been charged with 1st degree Rape, Criminal Sexual Act, Kidnapping, Sexual Abuse, Aggravated Sexual Abuse, Unlawful Imprisonment, Menacing & Criminal Mischief, An investigation revealed that Gardepe menaced and threatened a victim, prevented the victim from leaving, calling 911 and forced unwanted sexual acts. Gardepe was processed and arraigned, he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail.

The Butternut Valley Alliance has announced a partnership with SFCU, to take the necessary measures to open a full-service branch in Morris. This development comes after the "Save Our Bank" task force was formed, as Community Bank NA had announced plan last year to close their Morris Branch. Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested a Kirkwood man for 3 gas station robberies. The 1st Robbery was on May 9th, at the Speedway gas station on Route 7 in Sanitaria Springs, where a male with a black shirt wrapped around his hand, implying he had a weapon, and grabbed a cash register & fled the scene in a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck. The 2nd Robbery was at the Mirabito gas station on Old Route 17 in Windsor, Sheriff Deputies identified the suspect vehicle and potential suspect as 46 year old Clint Loomis of Kirkwood. On Friday, a 3rd Robbery occurred at a gas station in Greene, Loomis was located on Route 12 in the Town of Chenango, A Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Loomis resisted, a Taser was deployed but Loomis drove off, Tire deflation devices were set up, Loomis damaged his tires but continued to flee, eventually leaving the vehicle on foot, he was apprehended. Loomis was wanted on a warrant, & was charged with Robbery, Obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing Police, Resisting arrest & 26 traffic violations, he was being held for arraignment.

Broome County Sheriff's Office arrested a Kirkwood man for 3 gas station robberies. The 1st Robbery was on May 9th, at the Speedway gas station on Route 7 in Sanitaria Springs, where a male with a black shirt wrapped around his hand, implying he had a weapon, and grabbed a cash register & fled the scene in a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck. The 2nd Robbery was at the Mirabito gas station on Old Route 17 in Windsor, Sheriff Deputies identified the suspect vehicle and potential suspect as 46 year old Clint Loomis of Kirkwood. On Friday, a 3rd Robbery occurred at a gas station in Greene, Loomis was located on Route 12 in the Town of Chenango, A Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Loomis resisted, a Taser was deployed but Loomis drove off, Tire deflation devices were set up, Loomis damaged his tires but continued to flee, eventually leaving the vehicle on foot, he was apprehended. Loomis was wanted on a warrant, & was charged with Robbery, Obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing Police, Resisting arrest & 26 traffic violations, he was being held for arraignment.
Oneonta Fire Fighters responded to a fire Sunday morning on Columbia Street, several occupants escaped, the fire began on the 1st floor, The cause of the fire is under investigation, the house is uninhabitable.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that 40 year old Rasheed Crawford of Binghamton was arrested following a robbery in Endicott. On Wednesday night, Crawford allegedly pulled a handgun to rob an Endicott gas station, he left the scene in a cab. Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrol in the Town of Union spotted the cab, conducted a traffic stop & Crawford was successfully taken into custody and turned over to the Endicott Police Department. Crawford was also wanted by the Binghamton Police Department regarding two robberies that occurred in the City of Binghamton on April 9, 2024.

Fire fighters in Morris were able to quickly extinguish a trailer home fire Sunday night. Morris Firefighters were called to 422 Pegg Road just before 6:00 PM Sunday night, crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly, with only minor damage reported, no injuries were reported.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced $25 million in capital grants will be made available to help volunteer fire departments upgrade their facilities and equipment. The grants will be administered by the state’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, fire companies have until April 30 2024 to respond to the request for applications at dhses.ny.gov.

A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after he fired a shotgun in the parking area of an Albany synagogue. No one was injured during the incident at the Temple Israel and the suspect was an unidentified 28-year-old man, who was quickly arrested, he made "threatening statements," during the incident. Police said that an early childhood center with at least two dozen preschoolers were on the premises. The parents were contacted, the facility went immediately into lockdown, Federal law enforcement is currently leading the investigation.

Upon arrival, the Troopers discovered several broken and intact beer bottles, some of which contained gasoline, a victim stated that Harris threw the bottles, starting the fire. The Bottles were tested, the results confirmed the presence of Harris’ DNA on the bottles. Harris will be sentenced to five years of felony probation supervision when sentenced at a later date.

Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced that 31 year old Derek Wignall of Hancock, pleaded guilty to Criminal Contempt. Wignall violated an Order of Protection by contacting the protected party while incarcerated on an unrelated matter, he was placed back into custody upon discovery of the violation of the Order of Protection. Judge Rosa ordered a pre-sentence investigation to be undertaken by the Delaware County Probation Department. If found to be appropriate, Wignall will be placed on probation supervision for a five-year term.

On April 22, Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrol responded to motor vehicle accident at State Route 12 and 12A in the Town of Chenango, 50 year old Jennifer Chamberlain of Binghamton was talked out of the vehicle by a deputy as gas was spilling onto the pavement, fire fighters responded to the crash and leak. Chamberlain attempted to make a turn, but veered wide left, crossing lanes of traffic. Her vehicle jumped over a raised curb and continued over a mulch bed striking several signposts and bushes before coming to a stop in the gas station parking lot. The broken signposts had ruptured the vehicle’s gas tank. Chamberlain's BAC was .27%, over 3 times the legal limit, she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI with a BAC of 0.18 or more, Speed Not Reasonable & Prudent, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation among other charges, she was arraigned and released on an appearance ticket for Town of Chenango Court.
Attorney General Letitia James announced that 340 firearms were turned in at a community gun buyback event hosted by her office and the Johnson City Police Department. Attorney General James' office held 9 gun buyback events statewide with more than 3,000 guns turned in, including 185 assault rifles, 1,656 handguns, and 823 long guns. "AK" McEwan Lomnicki has been released from a Syracuse hospital & has returned home to Sidney. McEwan Lomnicki was struck by a vehicle while walking home from School on February 15th, 31 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney was charged with Aggravated DWI, & numerous other charges for the incident. The 14 year Sidney Basketball enthusiast has a long recovery ahead of her & she expressed gratitude for the community support following the incident, AK's Father, Rich Lomnicki told WCDO News that she still requires rest at home and it is unknown when she can return to Sidney Middle School.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that A routine traffic stop in Binghamton led to an arrest on an outstanding warrant for aggravated harassment charges on Sunday. Deputies observed a parked car at a gas Station and identified the driver as 26 year old Jesse Roberts who was wanted for aggravated harassment for allegedly sending threatening messages to a woman and was taken into custody. Roberts had been driving with an open container of alcohol and six open license suspensions for failing to appear in court for traffic tickets, he faces a number of additional charges and was taken to the Broome County Correction Facility for arraignment.

Delaware County Public Health announced that a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Delhi. This is the first animal in Delaware County to test positive for rabies in 2023, 1 dog was bitten by a the rabid raccoon, there were no human exposures. According to the owner of the exposed dog, the raccoon was not acting sick or appeared to be rabid. Vaccination records of the dog indicated the animal was not up to date on its rabies vaccinations & will have a 6-month quarantine following State Department of Health guidelines. Taber was charged him with 3rd degree Arson the fire was quickly extinguished by the Johnson City and Binghamton fire departments, Taber was taken to Broome County central arraignment. He was released & will answer to the charge ion court at a later date.

Sidney Firefighters responded to 214 Johnson Circle in the village last night, for the report of smoke showing at Springbrook. Residents were evacuated, the smoke was from a defective furnace, no injuries were reported & residents were moved to another residence for the night.
Binghamton Police announced that an officer has been switched to desk duty, following allegations by witnesses that the officer detained one person involved in a fight on January 1st, by kneeling on the suspect's neck. Video from bystanders was released to social media platforms, & protesters appeared at the Police Station following the incident. Binghamton Police are asking all those who recorded video of the incident to turn them into to investigators by calling (607) 772-7091.

Sidney Native Nancy Sue Burns passed away at the age of 85 on December 8th, Nancy Sue worked at the former Tri-Town News starting in 1975 & worked there for 43 years, rising to "Editor" of the weekly newspaper. A celebration of life for Nancy Sue will be held at a later date. In memory of Nancy Sue, donations can be made to the Chenango County Hospice in Norwich, more information is available at the CH Landers Funeral Chapel website.

State Police at Norwich arrested 62 year old Thomas Brick of Chenango Forks, on 2 counts of Grand Larceny, Troopers were contacted by a victim who had made an agreement with Brick to complete home renovations but no work had been completed. The contract was made in May and the victim paid Brick $18-thousand but called the State Police after several months of no work. Brick was arrested and processed at SP Norwich. He was arraigned and scheduled for his next court date in the Greene Village Court on January 5.

State Police arrested 27 year old Gerard Bourgeois of Otego for 2nd degree Burglary & 3rd degree Arson, Police responded on Monday just before 8:00 PM to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Pleasant Valley Road in the town of Hartwick, troopers heard smoke alarms & observed smoke coming from a residence on Bunn Hill Road. The troopers notified area Firefighters & entered the home, they found an active fire at a gas stove, they could not turn off the stove due to the damage to the controls, & instead turned the propane tanks outside. Troopers responded to another report of a suspicious person near the Hartwick Restaurant on State Highway 205, when they located Bourgeois. Bourgeois was arraigned at Otsego County Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond pending court action on October 12th.

Another Community Mass Food Distribution is being held Friday morning at the Sidney Fire Station at 11:00 AM on Union Street, Catholic Charities spokesperson Penny McKnight explains:
