Tioga County Sheriff’s Department and Tioga County Bureau of Fire began a process last night that intended to make residents of Richford aware of a potential water hazard involving the Valley View Pond dam. While distributing flyers regarding the dam situation, an inadvertent message was sent to Richford area telephones telling people to evacuate erroneously. There was no need to evacuate; area Fire Department will siphon water from the Valley View Pond today to further reduce the water hazard at the dam.
The Sidney Center Improvement Group will host another stream clean up day Saturday, starting at 10:00 AM. Group Spokesman Mike Sellitti explains:

Country artist's Jamie O'Neal, Andy Griggs and Ty Herndon will perform tonight at 7:00 PM at Damaschke field in Oneonta. The concert will go on rain or shine under the large tent. Continuing with shows throughout the weekend, the “All Star Jam," featuring some of the areas premier musicians, will take to the stage throughout the day Saturday, followed by Three Dog Night performing Sunday. The Latest Quinnipiac Poll shows Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo continues to maintain a 2-to-1 advantage over his Republican challenger Rob Astorino in New York's gubernatorial race. The poll has Cuomo ahead 56% to 28% over Astorino. The poll finds that many voters remain unfamiliar with Astorino, or Democratic Party challenger Zephyr Teachout.
Voters can expect new ballot lines this November, next to the familiar Democratic and Republican parties, as candidates seek to attract single-issue voters and get their names on the ballot two, three or even four times. Yesterday was the deadline for groups hoping to create ballot lines to submit petitions to state election officials. New lines expected on the November ballot include the Women's Equality Party and Stop Common Core. New York election law allows candidates to run on multiple lines, with the number of votes for each line added together for a candidate's total tally.
Deposit Fire Fighters responded to a fire this morning at around 1:45 at 172 Front Street. All occupants escaped without injury, Hancock and Windsor Fire Departments also responded to the fire, the cause of fire remains under investigation.
Governor Cuomo signed legislation to Expand and strengthen services for veterans, active service members and their families. The new law eases the transition to a new school for children of military families that relocate, lowers the cost of higher education for Veterans receiving benefits under the GI bills, & offers military family members greater flexibility with professional licenses received from other states or jurisdictions. The new law also strengthens the supplemental burial assistance provided by the state to military families when a service member dies in combat or as a result of injuries sustained on the battlefield.


The state labor department released the unemployment statistics for the month of July. State wide, the rate was at 6.8%, locally, Chenango county's rate dropped 9 10ths to 5.7%, Delaware county dropped 1.1% to 6.6% and Otsego County dropped 9/10ths to 5.7%.

The American Red Cross continues to have an urgent need for blood and platelet donations, even as thousands of people answered the urgent call to donate last month. Through the end of July, the Red Cross saw an increase of 7.5 percent in the number of donors giving blood. Despite the increase, blood products are being distributed to hospitals as quickly as donations come in, maintaining the urgent need. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office executed a “no knock” search warrant in South New Berlin, following a lengthy investigation into the sales of heroin and cocaine.  39-year-old Jennifer Perrotti was charged with  Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance,  Criminal Nuisance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.  The Narcotics Division recovered cocaine and heroin from within the residence as well as packaging material and scales,   Perrotti was arraigned in the Town of Columbus Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $15,000 cash bail. She is expected to return to the Town of New Berlin Court at a later date.

New York State’s unemployment rate fell by 0.2% to 6.7%, its lowest level since December 2008, according to preliminary figures released today by the State Labor Department. the state’s private sector job count grew by 2,500 in April, the 17th consecutive monthly gain. In the southern tier counties, unemployment decreased by 6/10’s since April of last year.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, State Police & Norwich Police arrested 53 year old Allan Sheppard on Friday for criminal nuisance, and criminal possession of a weapon, following a drug investigation into illegal drug activity in Afton. Police recovered more than 6 illegally possessed long guns and an undisclosed amount of cash, Sheppard has a prior felony conviction, which prevents him from legally possessing a firearm, and the criminal nuisance charge alleges that Sheppard was using his residence to sell controlled substances. He was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $30,000 cash bail. More arrests are pending.


45-year-old James Leavelle of Mentor, Ohio was airlifted to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown early Friday afternoon after his small plane crashed in a field at North Montgomery Hollow Road in the town of Roxbury. The crash was reported at about 12:30 PM, A LifeNet helicopter transported Leavelle to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. The investigation into the crash is continuing.


The state Senate approved legislation to designate yogurt as the official state snack. The bills calls yogurt "an important economic driver" for the state, as New York is now the number 1 producer of yogurt in the country. The Senate voted 52 to 8 in favor of the bill, which now heads to the State Assembly

10 hazard mitigation projects are scheduled for federal funds for projects to get people out of traditionally flood prone areas.  1 of the projects is the Sidney Green Plain Project, Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak explains:

Matviak said that 22 million dollars in federal funds would be used for the Plankenhorn farm project for River Street area residents, another 5 to 6 millions dollars will be used to purchase 73 damaged properties in that section of the village.


A trial-level judge in Albany has ruled that New York’s new gun law does not violate the Second Amendment. The decision from state Supreme Court Justice Thomas McNamara also rejected legal claims that the gun law was improperly pushed through the legislature by Governor Cuomo. Cuomo issued a “message of necessity” that allowed lawmakers to vote on the measure without the usual waiting period for the consideration of bills. The law bans high-capacity magazines and many semi-automatic firearms.


Governor Cuomo announced a commission to explore how to invest a proposed $2 billion bond to upgrade technology in classrooms and fund construction for pre-kindergarten classrooms.  The commission will come up with recommendations on how the money should be spent. The bond will need voter approval in November. Cuomo announced a $2 billion bond for his smart schools initiative to bring wi-fi, tablets and upgraded computers to schools and fund construction for new pre-kindergarten classroom space. It was approved in the new state budget.

2 Republicans have filed to run in a June 24th Republican primary against incumbent Congressman Richard Hanna. Democrats failed to meet a state deadline for fielding a candidate to run in November against Hanna in the 22nd Congressional District. The Conservative Party and Working Families Party also failed to field candidates, while Hanna filed petitions to secure the Independence Party line in November. State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney and tea party activist Michael Kicinski are running in the primary as conservatives.


The New York Comptroller’s Office reports stopping more than $24 million in questionable personal income tax refunds so far this year, finding 7,482 improper filings, 18% more than last year. The office has audited and approved 4.8 million state refund requests, totaling $4.3 billion, with another 346,000 refund requests for $352.5 million expected to be paid soon. In 4,805 instances, involving income totaling just over  $16 million dollars, taxpayers claimed ineligible refundable credits, such as for fake or an inflated number of dependents, or understated income.

Governor Cuomo is reminding New Yorkers that nearly 88,000 jobs are currently available and listed at jobs.ny.gov. The site sorts jobs by region and occupation, & allows users to search jobs based on zip code & distance. There are 96 career centers around the state, which can be found at labor.ny.gov/career-center-locator.  Employers can list jobs at labor.ny.gov/hire.  Currently, there are 3,946 jobs listed in the Southern Tier region.

Governor Cuomo unveiled his $137.2 Billion Dollars state budget proposal for the 2014 and 2015 fiscal year, to a joint session of the legislature this afternoon:

Cuomo said that the state spending is up only 1.7%, the state legislature now has until April 1st to get the budget plan passed.


The new Senior Center opened today on the 2nd floor of the Sidney Civic Center, which will be tied into the recreational facilities at the Sidney Boys & Girls Club.  Club Director Trish Tyrell said that many area organizations and businesses have supported this project:

The Oneonta Police Department announced the arrests of 3 juveniles, in connection with the vandalism at Doc Knapp Field, Riverside Elementary School, the Swart –Wilcox House and a vehicle last weekend.  Police officials said the tips provided by the public led to these arrests.  All 3 suspects are under the age of 16, their identities will not be released, and the investigation is still continuing.


The new season of “American Idol” began last week on Fox, with taped auditions from various venues.  Last week’s season debut featured 15 year old Kaitlyn Jackson of Norwich, performing her original song “Another Angel”.  Jackson told WCDO News about the experience, and the surprise of seeing herself on national television:

Federal Authorities closed down Lyn’s Leisure Tyme Gun Shop in Davenport last Thursday, when the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms raided the establishment on state route 23.  The Bureau has not released details of the raid Thursday, the Delaware county sheriffs department were not involved in the raid.


Plans are continuing to go forward, for the ambitious plan to try to get village of Sidney residents out of the flood prone areas downtown, into a new settlement to be built in the Plankenhorn Road area.  Sidney village Economic development Director John Redente explains:

Governor Cuomo will deliver the 2014-15 executive Budget Address this afternoon in Albany.  The presentation will begin at 2:00 PM at the Hart Theatre at the Egg Center for Performing Arts in Albany, before a joint session of the legislature.


The Parole Hearing for convicted murderer David Dart of Milford Is scheduled for today.  Dart was convicted of the 1989 murder of Gillian Gibbons in her car in the lowest level of the Oneonta municipal parking garage. Dart has been held in a prison downstate since his conviction in Otsego county court.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Amber Valentine and 24 year old Randy Nonnenberg of Port Crane Thursday for Petty Larceny, Conspiracy and Endangering the Welfare of a Child following an incident at a Town of Norwich business.   The 2 are accused of entering an area business, stealing an item, and then bringing it back for a refund as a return, with a 2-year-old child present at the time.  Both were issued appearance tickets for the Town of Norwich Court and will appear at a later date.


U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Richard Hanna announced the success and expansion of the U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program to serve New York-based Chobani yogurt in school lunches.  New York State was chosen as 1 of 4 states to participate in the pilot program, the USDA has decided to continue and expand it to 4 additional states during the next school year. During the pilot program, 200,000 pounds of yogurt were provided to schools in those states. New York State leads the country in Greek yogurt production, which has twice the protein, less sodium and fewer carbohydrates.


Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has weighed in on governor Cuomo’s agenda that was laid out Wednesday afternoon during the annual "State of the State" speech in Albany:  Silver was happy to hear the governor support full day Pre-K programs and a bond act to build necessary facilities for that:

The Governor will deliver his executive budget proposal to the legislature on January 21st; they have until April 1st to get it passed.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 37-year-old Christopher Merwin of Delhi for 1 count of Criminal Contempt of Court in the 2nd degree Thursday.  Merwin is accused of violating a Court Order prohibiting him from having contact with a protected person. He was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and released on his own recognizance to appear in the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

State police in Oneonta arrested 22-year-old Cassandra Richardson of Hartwick for criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marihuana.  Richardson was found to unlawfully possessing prescription drugs and marihuana after being pulled over for using a cell phone while driving, she was issued tickets for Town of Oneonta Court on January 28th.
