Sidney Police, Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies & State Police arrested 2 people on Division Street in Sidney earlier this afternoon. Sidney Police were processing the individuals & the arrests were related to the theft of 2 Frontier Communications Vans Sunday night from their Oak Avenue location in Sidney. WCDO will have more details as they become available.

State Police continue to investigate a fatal hit and run involving a vehicle that struck 2 bicyclists on Route 26 in Cincinnatus. Police said that 1 bicyclist died, who is being identified at this time as a 67-year-old male of De Ruyter, a 2nd bicyclist was transported to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, that person is identified as a 67-year-old male of McGraw. 2 other bicyclists were not injured and are identified as a 34-year-old female of Greene, and a 64-year-old male of Cincinnatus. The operator of the vehicle did not stop, the vehicle was located by a Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputy in the Town of Willet. The investigation is on-going, more will be released when it is available.
Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 39 year old Sabrina Johnson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle among several other charges. Johnson is accused of possessing illegal narcotics during a traffic stop; she was released on an appearance ticket for Town of Pittsfield Court at a later date.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 27 year old Albert Quick of Oneonta following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident where the operator fled the scene in the Town of Milford on June 7th. Quick was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident among other charges, after he allegedly fled the scene of the accident, he was later located in the Town of Hartwick. Quick was taken into custody and was later released on an appearance ticket for Town of Milford and Hartwick Courts on a later date.
The Village of Sidney announced that the water will be shut off tomorrow from about 7:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on West Main Street between Sunset Avenue & Circle Drive. Crews will be installing a new Water valve in that area at that time.
Birthright of Sidney is now open, at their location in Suite 10 inside the Sidney Civic center. Birthright's services are free, some of the services include pregnancy testing, counseling, agency referrals, plus baby food, clothing & diapers, more information is available at 563-4321.
The Town of Unadilla reported that a few of their roads will be "briefly closed" tomorrow for chip sealing. The affected roads are Butternut Road, Sand Hill Road, Lovers Lane, Rod and Gun Club Road & Leizear Hill Road.
The Sidney Alumni Association announced that they will hold their alumni weekend on July 16th through the 18th, after missing a year due to the COVID pandemic. Spokesman Bryan Innes explains:

Attorney General Letitia James alerts New Yorkers to remain vigilant against a surge in telephone scams. Scammers impersonate a utilities customer service representative and urge customers to buy gift cards and call back with the serial numbers to pay what they claim is a delinquent bill, and they threaten to cut off service. New Yorkers who have been targeted by this or any other scam are urged to file a complaint by submitting a Consumer Frauds and Protection Bureau online complaint form or by calling (800) 771-7755.

State tax receipts through the first 2 months of State Fiscal Year were $4 billion higher than forecast in the Enacted Budget Financial Plan, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. As of May 31, the General Fund held a balance of $14.4 billion, $4.7 billion higher than the state Division of Budget projections, and $7 billion higher than last year at the same time, largely due to the original COVID 19 shutdown.

Governor Cuomo has directed state agencies, including the Department of Transportation, to suspend all non-emergency construction that would result in lane closures or traffic delays over the Labor Day holiday weekend. The actions are part of the State’s ‘Drivers First’ initiative, launched in 2012 (https://www.governor.ny.gov/press/09272012Drivers-First), which prioritizes the convenience of motorists to ensure that traffic disruptions are as minimal as possible to drivers at highway and bridge projects across the state. The Governor’s directive is in effect until Tuesday, September 2 at 6:00am. Motorists can call 511 or check www.511ny.org (http://www.511ny.org/) for the latest traffic information.
The state Department of Transportation gave an update on the Prospect Mountain construction project. Crews are working around the Chenango Street Bridge. By the end of the bridge construction, there will be more than 50 arches helping create the bridge. Chenango Street near the Chenango Street Bridge will be open at noon on Saturday. The bridge is expected to be completed by early 2015. A big detour in the project right now is the detour around the I-81 north ramp, which is currently closed and is scheduled to re-open by November 1st.

The release of evaluation data enables New Yorkers to see, for the first time, the results of their schools' teacher and principal evaluations. September is National Preparedness Month. The Red Cross will participate in a Community Preparedness Fair on Friday, Sept. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. at SERVPRO, 134 Conklin Ave. in Binghamton. The fair will consist of preparedness tools, car seat checks with the Broome County Sheriff's Office, a State Police seat belt convincer, and a healthy neighborhood program to help improve quality of life. State Police arrested 40-year-old Edward Bryden of Sidney Center for 2nd degree Menacing. The arrest resulted from a dispute complaint at a residence on Center Street; troopers accuse Bryden of repeatedly engaging in conduct that caused fear to the victim. Bryden was arraigned in the Sidney Town Court and released on his own recognizance. The court issued an order of protection against Bryden.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office executed a “no knock” search warrant in South New Berlin, following a lengthy investigation into the sales of heroin and cocaine. 39-year-old Jennifer Perrotti was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Nuisance, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The Narcotics Division recovered cocaine and heroin from within the residence as well as packaging material and scales, Perrotti was arraigned in the Town of Columbus Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $15,000 cash bail. She is expected to return to the Town of New Berlin Court at a later date.

New York State’s unemployment rate fell by 0.2% to 6.7%, its lowest level since December 2008, according to preliminary figures released today by the State Labor Department. the state’s private sector job count grew by 2,500 in April, the 17th consecutive monthly gain. In the southern tier counties, unemployment decreased by 6/10’s since April of last year.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, State Police & Norwich Police arrested 53 year old Allan Sheppard on Friday for criminal nuisance, and criminal possession of a weapon, following a drug investigation into illegal drug activity in Afton. Police recovered more than 6 illegally possessed long guns and an undisclosed amount of cash, Sheppard has a prior felony conviction, which prevents him from legally possessing a firearm, and the criminal nuisance charge alleges that Sheppard was using his residence to sell controlled substances. He was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $30,000 cash bail. More arrests are pending.
45-year-old James Leavelle of Mentor, Ohio was airlifted to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown early Friday afternoon after his small plane crashed in a field at North Montgomery Hollow Road in the town of Roxbury. The crash was reported at about 12:30 PM, A LifeNet helicopter transported Leavelle to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. The investigation into the crash is continuing.
The state Senate approved legislation to designate yogurt as the official state snack. The bills calls yogurt "an important economic driver" for the state, as New York is now the number 1 producer of yogurt in the country. The Senate voted 52 to 8 in favor of the bill, which now heads to the State Assembly
