Congressman Richard Hanna will be the Republican Party nominee after yesterdays’ Primary win over Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney. Hanna is looking to win his 3rd term in the November election, Tenney could still mount a challenge to Hanna as a third party candidate, no democrats have announced a run for the 22nd congressional district.
The State Labor Department released unemployment rates for May. The state’s private sector job count rose by 106,500 from May 2013 to May 2014. The state’s unemployment rate in May was unchanged at 6.7%, remaining at its lowest level since December 2008. In May, the number of private sector jobs in the state was 7,568,600, an all time high. Locally, Chenango County's rate is 5.7%, Broome County 6.4% Delaware County 6.3% and Otsego County 5.3% unemployment last month
Governor Cuomo will approve extending a tax credit for cleaning and redeveloping industrial sites. Lawmakers last week voted to extend the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program, which was due to expire at the end of next year. The program, which provides tax breaks to developers who clean and build on contaminated land, is now set to expire at the end of March 2017
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today announced that his office will sponsor a gun buyback in Binghamton on Saturday, June 28 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, as part of his statewide gun buyback program. The Attorney General’s Office will be accepting working and non-working, unloaded firearms in exchange for compensation on site. This Saturday’s gun buyback will take place at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 478, located at 65 Carroll Street in Binghamton, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
A heavily traveled section connecting Route 17 with I 81 northbound will shut down Monday for at least three months, as work continues on the state DOT Prospect Mountain project. Starting Monday at 9 a.m., the Route 17 eastbound ramp to I-81 northbound will close for reconstruction through October. A detour will be posted directing motorists from Route 17 east to Exit 72 at Front Street, then to I-81 North. Front Street’s configuration will be altered to create two travel lanes. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes wherever possible
The State University of New York said H. Carl McCall was reappointed as trustee and chairman of the SUNY Board of Trustees. The State Senate confirmed his appointment this week. McCall's term expire June 30th, 2021. Previously McCall was New York State Comptroller from 1993 to 2002
Parents are reminded after the school year ends, children remain eligible for free meals at hundreds of sites around New York State this summer. State agencies are working with nonprofit and private partners to increase awareness of the Summer Food Service Program. Governor Cuomo also issued a proclamation marking July as Summer Meals Month to highlight the issue. The Deposit Market will be August 21st & September 18th from 10:00am-2:00pm, the Sidney Farmers Market will be Every Tuesday from July 1st to September 30th from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the Walton Market will be on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays from July 2nd to October 15th from 10:00am-2:00pm.

The public is invited to join the Bassett Healthcare Network in saluting Dr. William Streck today. 3 receptions will be held today on the Bassett Medical Center terrace in Cooperstown from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.; noon to 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Dr. Streck will retire from Bassett July 1st.


The Sidney Police Department advises that the following parking restrictions and street closings will be in effect for the Hometown Day Parade Saturday.  No Parking rules in effect on Main Street and River Street from 7:00 AM to the conclusion of the parade.  Streets closed to traffic will be at 10:00 AM, Circle Drive from Fox Street to West Main Street, at 11:30 Main Street at State Route 7, West Main Street from Loomis Drive to Main Street, East Main Street from Beale to Main Street & River Street from Colegrove to Main Street.

State troopers arrested 57-year-old David  Menard  of Bainbridge, for Possession of a Sexual Performance by a Child, and Promote a Sexual Performance by a Child.   Menard was arrested after a search warrant was conducted at his residence at the Maple Manor Apartments in the Village of Bainbridge; he was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.


State Senator John Bonacic said that legislation would be forwarded shortly, Following the Latest Testimony at a public hearing on the rise heroin addiction.  Bonacic said that a panel of experts, and questions from the audience, were eye opening:

More public hearings are scheduled throughout the state; they expect to have legislation ready for lawmakers to vote on in early June.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 22-year-old Peter Minko of Franklin for possession of a hypodermic instrument, following an incident that led to Minko being arrested for violating the terms of his probation.  County Probation Officers searched Minko’s home; they found hypodermic needles & drug paraphernalia, Minko will return to Franklin Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.


Governor Cuomo announced 80 awards across the state to repair, rehabilitate and preserve housing for low- and moderate-income residents. The competitive awards are being made to municipalities, localities, and not-for-profit organizations to support critical priorities and highlighting the greatest needs within the state's economic development regions. Locally, HCR's awards included the Southern Tier with 14 projects totaling $5,159,500.


State police arrested 58-year-old Stephen Bowers  of Norwich for 3rd degree Menacing. Bowers was charged for allegedly going to a neighbor’s home & threatening to kill the neighbor with a baseball bat for driving too fast on  Pat Farley Road in Norwich.   Bowers was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Norwich Court on June 5th.


The state AARP outlined a proposal to improve assistance for people who take care of their loved ones at home. The AARP’s proposed “CARE Act” is designed to improve how hospitals help  caregivers learn after-care tasks for loved ones and strengthen community resources that help. New York State has added $5 million in funding for caregiver programs in this year’s budget, but more needs to be done, according to the AARP.  New York ranks 48th in supporting family caregivers.


Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino accepted the Republican nod for governor yesterday, setting up a showdown with Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in November. Astorino's nomination brought the two-day Republican Party convention to a close at the Hilton Westchester. Earlier in the day, GOP delegates backed Astorino's running mate, Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss, for lieutenant governor. The Class of 2014 will be honored at SUNY Oneonta’s 125th commencement this Saturday.  The college will host 3 ceremonies in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House throughout the day, 1,513 students will be awarded degrees.

State Police remind drivers to not drink and drive again today, as they will continue their efforts to crack down on drunk driving on Saint Patrick’s Day.  Drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints; additional DWI patrols and Police will also be ticketing distracted drivers using handheld electronic devices.  State Police remind residents that if they are drinking at a party, to have a designated driver, and if you are driving & witness an obviously impaired driver, top call police immediately.


Firefighters in Deposit responded to 39 Elm Street Sunday morning. One occupant suffered burns and was taken to an area hospital.  Firefighters from 4 area departments responded, deposit firefighters had to respond Sunday afternoon after hot spots rekindled, no injuries were reported.

Governor Cuomo addressed a rally of thousands of students, parents, teachers, and advocates who traveled to Albany Tuesday to support charter schools in New York State.

Education continues to be one of the biggest portions of the state budget each year; the budget is due on April 1st.


Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino announced he would run for the Republican nomination to challenge Governor Andrew Cuomo. Astorino released a video message informing the public of his decision. Astorino was elected to his second term in November in Westchester County; he has been traveling the state courting support from GOP chairmen and potential donors. Last month, Astorino opened an “Astorino for Governor” campaign account, which allowed him to raise campaign funds at the higher limits set for statewide candidates. The state Republican Party convention is scheduled for May in Rye Brook.


Lawmakers and those who look after the state’s infrastructure are urging state leadership to fund local road & bridge projects in the next state budget.  Area Assemblyman Pete Lopez comments:

Lopez said that many secondary roads were heavily damaged by the harsh winter weather this year, and are in need of repair beyond the usual levels.


A Siena College poll shows New Yorkers favor Hillary Clinton for president, over New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie.  Clinton tops Christie, Congressman Paul Ryan, and Senator Rand Paul by over 35 points among New Yorkers polled recently, regarding the 2016 presidential race.


Governor Cuomo announced the release of $130,000 for the “FreshConnect” FarmersMarket program, which assists New York farmers by promoting the sale of locally grown food products. The Binghamton Mets will hold their annual "Welcome Back B-Mets" Dinner on Wednesday, April 2nd at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton in downtown Binghamton.  Tickets are $25.00 per person. The settlement over land and taxes, between New York State and the Oneida Indian Nation, was ratified by a federal judge yesterday. The Oneidas will pay $50 million a year to the state, from gambling revenues at Turning Stone casino, in return for a casino monopoly in a 10-county area. Both sides say the settlement ends decades of legal battles between the Oneidas and the state and Madison and Oneida counties.
