25 year old Sean Gillespie of Bovina was sentenced to 3 years in prison to be followed by 1 year of post release supervision in Delaware County Court Monday. Gillespie appeared in Delaware County Court for sentencing on his conviction of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, with Intent to Sell, he admitted to possessing fentanyl, with the intention of selling it, in the Village of Delhi on March 13th, he also forfeited the money he received from the sale of the illegal substance, Gillespie was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing.


The Village of Bainbridge was recently awarded the Community Development Block Grant for $500,000, by the New York State Office of Community Renewal, to help area property owners get needed funding for repairs & renovations, Mayor Phil Wade Explains:

Preliminary Plans are being put together for a new park in Chenango County, Shane Butler of the Chenango County Planning Department told WCDO News what they are looking to accomplish:

Butler said that the plans followed the results of the recent survey that the Planning Department released a few months ago to see what county residents wanted by 2050, 1 of the top requests was for more health and wellness projects in the area, and a park fits in those parameters, they hope to be able to have construction for the park underway by next summer.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 34 year old Matthew Baumert of Franklin on criminal mischief charges. On Tuesday June 25th, Deputies responded to a trespass complaint in the Town of Franklin, Baumert is accused of entering the property & causing damage, Deputies submitted for an arrest warrant to be issued by the Town of Franklin Court, On August 20th, Deputies arrested Baumert on the arrest warrant, he was was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.


The Community Foundation for South Central New York has completed a regional community assessment focused on a number of topics, Tina Barber, Community Foundation Executive Director, will present Delaware County specific findings on Wednesday, at 10 AM at the Walton Theatre and at 2 PM at the MTC Community Room in Margaretville. Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 35 year old Joseph Clary of Oneonta for Sex Offender Failure to Notify Change of Address. Clary was charged following an investigation in to a registered sex offender failing to abide by the State Sex Offender Registry, he had relocated from his residence in the Town of Oneonta in March of 2024 and did not make the proper notifications to authorities, he was processed and was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.


51 year old John Wilson of Binghamton was sentenced as a 2nd time felony offender in Broome County Court to 8 years in State Prison, followed by 3 years of post-release supervision for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The sentencing followed a jury trial in April where a jury was empaneled, and opening statements were delivered, shortly before the first witness was called, Wilson opted to enter a guilty plea. Wilson was arrested in January of 2023, after the Broome County Special Investigations Unit executed a narcotics search warrant at the storefront located at 42 Clinton Street in the City of Binghamton, they seized cocaine and fentanyl, a digital scale and packaging material.


48 year old Edward Monk of Binghamton was sentenced last week in Broome County Court to 3.5 years to 7 years in State Prison for Attempted Arson & Aggravated Harassment of an Employee by Inmate. On December 9th, 2023 Monk set fire to 2 trucks at a Mirabito gas station on Upper Front Street. On March 15, 2024, while incarcerated at Broome County Jail, Monk threw a cup of urine at forensic workers and a corrections sergeant.


The annual Gus Macker 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is only days away in Downtown Norwich, Macker Organizer Tom Revoir said that they still need volunteers for a variety of tasks:

On July 3rd, Norwich Police Department received an emergency call about a Burglary in progress on Westcott Street in the City of Norwich. Officers responded and took 26 year old Adam Ferguson of Norwich into custody, he was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Mischief & Criminal Trespass. Police reported that the woman called & said that an unknown male was climbing a ladder from her backyard and was trying to enter her 3rd floor apartment & tried to force open a door & enter. Officers found Ferguson still on the ladder. Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach stated that Ferguson is on Parole for felony assault on a police officer in 2020, he was remanded to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $25,000 bail.


25 year old Sean Gillespie of Bovina pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in Delaware County Court last week. Gillespie appeared in County Court on July 1st for a conference on his pending indictment, After the conference, he pleaded guilty, he admitted that on March 13th in the Village of Delhi, he possessed a quantity of fentanyl with intent to sell, he will be sentenced to 3 years in state prison, followed by 1 year of post release supervision, he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 43 year old Chad Walters of Bainbridge for failing to abide by the State Sex Offender Registry, by failing to report an address change & Failing to Complete the Annual Verification. Walters had relocated from the Town of Otego in the beginning of 2024. State Troopers located Walters last week, he was processed on an arrest warrant as well as the new charges and was being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility for future court action.


Otsego County Sheriff's Office arrested 20 year old Howayne Gayle of Hartwick, for Menacing & Harassment following a domestic dispute in the Town of Hartwick. Gayle is accused of threatening the victim with a pair of scissors during the dispute, he was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Office, he was processed & was then turned over to the jail to await future court action.

School district across the state are putting up their budget proposals today for public approval, many district also have School Board Seats, capital projects & School Bus Propositions up for public vote. State Police arrested 4 people in connection with a case of over 100 neglected animals at a farm on Clark Lane and Pig Farm Lane in New Berlin. Arrested were 44 year old Dominick Brown, for 9 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals & 95 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance. 74 year old Jane Richards for 9 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals & 87 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance. 56 year old Helen Goude & 60 year old Katheriena Goude, lesser counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals & Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; & Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance. On April 26th, over 2 dozen animals were located deceased and an additional 107 neglected animals were removed, including horses, pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, a llama, dogs and cats. All 4 were issued appearance tickets for New Berlin Town Court tomorrow


State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for April 2024. Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State's area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month. To recap last week's statewide press release, New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.3% in March to 4.2% in April 2024. Locally, Chenango County had 3.4% Unemployment, Delaware County 4.1% & Otsego 3.8% in April.

The Sidney High School Flood Monitoring Team will be giving a special presentation for the public in the Smart Community Room at the Sidney Memorial Public Library on Tuesday, May 28th at 6PM. Rich Townsend was a Science Teacher at Sidney at the start of the program in 2007, & is still guiding the program, he told WCDO about donations that they have received recently & what the money will be used for:

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 25 year old Sean Gillespie of Delhi on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court to answer to a drug related charge, issued out of the Town of Delhi. On May 9th, Deputies were contacted by the City Oneonta Police Department, who advised that they who had taken Gillespie into custody, he was turned over to central arraignment processing at the Delaware County Jail to await arraignment.


FRIENDS OF THE UPPER DELAWARE RIVER & the New York City Department of Environmental Protection will hold a meeting today regarding the Delaware Aqueduct Shutdown scheduled for October 1st. The meeting will be today at 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at 158 East Front Street, Hancock.

Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested 4 individuals on drug charges. Deputies were assisted by the Delhi Police, Deputies located a quantity of Fentanyl and drug paraphernalia within the vehicle and on the persons inside the vehicle. Arrested were 25-year-old Sean Gillespie of Delhi, 27-year-old Marissa Peck of Andes, 32-year-old Shaun Carman of Delhi & 27-year-old Erin Hubbell of Margaretville, All 4 were transported to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office to await Centralized Processing Arraignment.


State Police were called to State Highway 12B in the town of Sherburne Sunday for a report of a motorcycle accident. When Troopers arrived, a dirt bike was observed in a ditch at the point of Foote Hill Road and State Highway 12B, their investigation determined that 26 year old Derek Leinbach of Sherburne, was traveling on State Highway 12B when he slid off the road into a ditch, he was pronounced dead at the scene, The investigation is ongoing.

Contraceptives will be available without a prescription in New York under an order signed by state health officials on Tuesday. The measure comes as the first over-the-counter birth control pill was made available in U.S. stores this month. The Food and Drug Administration said that the once-a-day Opill could be sold on store shelves and without a prescription. More than 25 states already allow pharmacists to provide contraceptive care.


74 year old George Sydlar of Davenport was sentenced to 30 days in jail when he appeared in Delaware County Court Tuesday. A jury convicted Sydlar of Falsely Reporting an Incident to 911, for calling 911 repeatedly to falsely report that his neighbor committed a crime, Police instructed Sydlar that his complaint with the neighbor was a civil complaint & and not a criminal one. A pre-sentence investigation was conducted by the Delaware County Probation Department, Sydlar refused to cooperate, & he was sentenced to 30 days in Jail, and he was transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to serve his sentence.


Delaware County District Attorney's Office reported that Katie Ryerson was convicted of Petty Larceny, while she was employed at the Delhi Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, she stole oxycodone pills from a nursing home resident for her own personal use in June 2023. Ryerson was placed on interim probation supervision for at least one year. Part of this requires Ryerson to enroll in and complete the Delaware County Adult Treatment Court Program. If she fails to complete the program, she will be sentenced to one year in jail, she is also expected to temporarily lose her nursing license.

43 year old Misty Cintron of Sidney was convicted in Delaware County Court to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to sell. Cintron admitted to selling fentanyl in the Village of Sidney on December 30, 2022. and for possessing at home with intent to sell. she was arrested along with Brandon Hendricks last November, he was also convicted of similar charges in February. Cintron will be sentenced to 3 and 1/2 years in state prison, on the 1st charge, and 3 and 1/2 years in state prison, to be followed by 1 year of post-release supervision for her 2nd conviction, The sentences will run concurrently, and she will also be permitted to enroll in the Lakeview Rehabilitation program once she is transferred into state prison, Cintron was remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility.


6 area Fire departments responded to a barn fire on State Highway 28 near Fly Creek Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m. Firefighters were able to save a tool shed and all its contents, a Barn, chicken coop and a tractor were lost in the blaze.


Service arrangements for Trooper John Grassia have been set for Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in Schenectady, following the mass Trooper Grassia will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Trooper Grassia was killed in a helicopter crash recently while serving with the National Guard in Texas.

Governor Cuomo held a COVID 19 briefing today in Albany; he said that as Hospitalizations rise & a vaccine arrival is imminent, there are 3 main objectives now:

New York State conducted over 212,000 COVID 19 tests Thursday; there were 10,591 positive test results, or roughly 5%.  Hospitalizations continue to climb, to 5,321, 1007 are now in ICU beds & 546 are on ventilators, there were 87 COVID related deaths on Thursday.


The Broome County Health Department had another 73 positive COVID 19 tests to report today, bringing their total to 6137 since the spring.  They reported 1 more death bringing their total to 151.  They have 5251 recoveries and the Health Department is monitoring almost 5000 people.


Chenango County Public Health reported 14 more positive tests for COVID today, they report  125 Active Cases, 502 Active Quarantines, 7 people are Hospitalized & 14 have died.  Chenango County has had 781 Confirmed Cases since March, with 653 recoveries & over 48,800 tests have been performed.


Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies were contacted by a Deposit resident who reported that her social security number was used by another person to commit fraud.  22 year old Kinda Osborne of Deposit is accused of misrepresenting herself as a State employee, in order to gain access to the victim’s social security number, which she is accused of using to apply for a debit card.  Osborne was charged with Identity Theft & Criminal Impersonation, she was released on appearance tickets for the Town of Deposit Court at a later date.


Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Sean Gillespie of Bovina on a warrant issued by the Town of Delhi Court.  Gillespie was wanted for Criminal Mischief, Grand Larceny & 2 counts of Petty Larceny, for allegedly removing catalytic converters from vehicles that were parked in the Town of Delhi.  Gillespie was located by the City of Oneonta Police Department; he was arraigned in the Town of Andes Court & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Governor Cuomo reported that over 197,000 COVID tests were conducted statewide on Wednesday, with 10,178 positives, or 5.15%.  Patient Hospitalizations went up by 171 to  5,164, patients in ICU beds continues to climb, they are up to 994 & 539 patients are on Ventilators, there were 92 Deaths Wednesday.


Otsego County Department of Health reported 20 new cases Thursday, Since December 1st there have been 203 confirmed cases reported, 745 are quarantined for being in close contact with a positive case.  Otsego County has had 1516 total confirmed cases, with 151 active cases, 17 are hospitalized, there have been 8 deaths, and more than half of the cases came from SUNY Oneonta & Hartwick College.


Delaware County Public Health reported 6 new cases of COVID Thursday they have 95 active cases with 5 hospitalized & 338 in quarantine.  Most of the new cases are attributed to "living Room Spread" from small home gatherings.  Delaware County has had 481 cases, 377 recoveries and 9 deaths.


Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a 2 car accident December 4th in the Town of Delhi that has resulted in the arrest of a Delhi man on driving while ability impaired by drugs charges.  Deputies were dispatched to Spring Valley Road in the Town of Delhi, where 44-year-old Joseph Garone of Delhi had allegedly backed into another vehicle, causing substantial damage, he appeared to be under the influence of drugs & was taken into custody.  Garone was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, unsafe backing and failure to notify DMV of an address change he was released on an appearance tickets for Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo announced today that the residential tenant eviction protection has been extended to January 1st.  The state's Safe Harbor Act protects tenants from COVID-related residential evictions and foreclosures. Last week, the governor also announced an emergency moratorium on evictions and foreclosures for commercial tenants is being extended through October 20th.


Chenango County Public Health announced their latest COVID 19 numbers Monday.  They have had 249 cases since March; currently there are 2 Active Cases, 1 hospitalization, 73 Active Quarantines 227 Recoveries, 7 deaths and over 28,600 Tests Performed.


The Broome County Health Department’s contact tracing team has interviewed a confirmed positive COVID19 case who reported having participated in the New York Off-Road Association Boondocks event in Pitcher. The confirmed positive individual was there September 19th & 20th.  The Broome County Health Department also reported that a positive COVID case was from a person who was at the Old Union Hotel at 246 Clinton Street in Binghamton on Monday, September 21 between 4:00 and 8:30 PM.  The Health Department asks anyone who was at either location during those periods to quarantine until October 6th, anyone exhibiting symptoms should immediately begin self-quarantine and contact a medical provider.


Hartwick College today reported no new cases of COVID-19 have been detected among students or staff.  The current number of active cases is down to 2, their total number of cases detected on campus since August 1, 2020 is 18.

Delaware County Sheriff's Department & State Police investigated a 2-car fatal accident Friday morning in Delhi.  Killed were 74 year old Sandra Elmore and her passenger, 80 year old Eugene Mills, both of Downsville.  Elmore was driving north on state Route 10 when her car crossed over into the southbound lane and collided with a car driven by 32 year old Michael Beilby of East Meredith.  The cause of the crash remains under investigation by members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.


Governor Cuomo reported 866 COVID 19 cases on Saturday out of more than 84,000 tests conducted, bringing the Statewide Total to 455,626.  Patient Hospitalizations were back up to 541, there were 155 patients in ICU beds, & 59 on ventilators, there were 6 Deaths Saturday, the state death toll is 25,456


Village of Delhi Police Department arrested 58-year-old Gary Stevens of Delhi for Predatory Sexual Assault of a Child and 1st degree Rape; he is accused of engaging in sexual acts with a child less than 11 years of age. Stevens was remanded without bail to the Delaware County Jail after his arraignment.   This investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed in this case.


Delaware County Sheriff Office arrested 21 year old Sean Gillespie of Bovina following an investigation into the forgery of personal checks that were stolen from a Town of Bovina home.  Deputies charged Gillespie with 3rd degree grand larceny and 18 counts each of criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a forged instrument & offering a false instrument for filing, for allegedly stealing nearly $4000 by using 18 stolen and forged checks, he was arraigned virtually & was released on his own recognizance pending his appearance in the Town of Delhi court on a later date.

Yolanda Vega of New York Lottery will present a ceremonial prize check to a Sidney man who won the $1 million top prize on the holiday-themed “Merry Millionaire” scratch-off ticket. The unidentified man purchased his ticket at the Mirabito Quickway on State Route 8 in Masonville on his way home from work; Yolanda Vega will present a $1,000,000 over-sized prize check to the newest Lottery Millionaire at the Masonville store tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM.
Governor Cuomo's 2018 State of the State Address is scheduled for tomorrow in Albany. The address will be delivered to a joint session of the legislature at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. The governor has outlined much of his 2018 agenda in recent weeks, and will have to put together a budget with a 4 billion dollar deficit, the budget is due April 1st.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 19-year-old Sean Gillespie of Bovina on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs, 2 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, and speeding 82 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith Friday. Gillespie allegedly possessed Ecstasy, marijuana, and Hydrocodone; he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $500 bail. 19-year-old Jeffrey Bowie of Hamden was an occupant in Gillespie’s vehicle, he was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance & unlawful possession of marijuana for allegedly possessing Ecstasy & marijuana, he was arraigned and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $500 bail.
The Oneonta Common Council will hold their first meeting of 2018 this evening at City Hall. The meeting will get underway at 7:00 PM in the council chambers on the 2nd floor.


Troy Police announced the arrest of 2 men Saturday in connection with the slayings of 4 people in a basement apartment recently. 38 year old James White and 24 year old Justin Mann of Scheneactady were each charged with 1st-degree murder and 4 each counts of 2nd-degree murder, for the killings of Shanta Myers, her 11 year old son Jeremiah, her 5 year old daughter Shanise Myers & & 22-year-old Brandi Mells. Troy Police said that Myers 15 year ols son was out of town on a retreat at the time of the murders, White & Mann are being held without bail in the Rensselaer County Jail.
Several new laws are officially on the books with the change of the calendar year. Paid family leave allows for New York employees who work for private employers to take up to 8 weeks of paid family leave for a variety of personal family reasons. New York's minimum wage increased to $10.40 for the upstate counties, The wage hikes are part of a multi-year increase approved by Cuomo and lawmakers in 2016. Also, Middle-class taxpayers will see a small cut in their state income taxes this year, most area joint filers & most single filers will have a drop in their rate to 6.33% The cut is part of new income rates approved by Cuomo and lawmakers in the last two budgets.
Governor Cuomo today announced that New York would join the FirstNet First Responder Network - a nationwide, high speed, wireless broadband network that was created exclusively for first responders and the public safety community. The network, which was created through a public-private partnership between AT&T and the federal government, will put advanced technology, and devices into the hands of first responders to give them the tools they need to better communicate and share information in emergency situations.
